Sabine hummed to himself, listening to the music in his head as he walked through the aisles of the grocery store. He didn’t even need anything, but every now and then it felt nice to get out of his Master’s home, remind himself that there are other people out there. Some part of him missed the humans that he used to live with, but only a small part. He was content, happy with where he was in his life. The vampire who turned him was not only his Master but also his lover, he was on a very long leash compared to the other servants, and he was allowed to come and go as he pleased since he always returned; why wouldn’t he?

He had been turned when he was a teenager, if his memory served right he was sixteen when it happened, and at first he had been treated like all the other slaves belonging to his Master, Aubrey. Not really allowed to talk, unless he was spoken to, he had to let his Master know where he was going inside the house at all times, he was never allowed outside the gates unless accompanied by his Master. And even though he was treated like this, a small part of him begged for every moment he could get from Aubrey, so he would look for things.

He needed to let his Master know he was going to be helping the gardeners with the flower garden Aubrey allowed for the women slaves. He was going to help in the laundry room, or he wanted permission to go with Aubrey hunting. It was actually one of the hunting trips that changed how he and Aubrey were to each other.

Sabine wore a small smile on his lips as he stared at the back of his Master’s head for what might have been the hundredth time that night. He wished that he could be by Aubrey’s side, but both sides were occupied by Aubrey’s protectors. That was one thing Sabine loved about Aubrey, even though he had someone to protect him at all times, he fought his own battles; they merely backed him up at his word. He knew when to admit he was having a problem in a fight, he admitted his imperfections.

There had been a lot of vampire clans attacking each other lately, so this was a bad time to have new bloods, freshly turned vampires, to have to train in hunting for when they could go out on their own. It was hard to keep an eye on them, and under the stressed conditions, Aubrey had been forced to only bring out a couple of new bloods, but even they were getting a bit fidgety. It was almost as if they were sensing their Master’s tension, which would be possible if they were further along in their development, but something wasn’t right tonight.

Even Sabine couldn’t deny that something was off, there was something in the air that made his blood run colder than normal. He turned his attention from the back of his Master’s head as the small group walked along the streets of the city, the streets resembling a ghost town since hardly anyone came out at this time of night in the city. His eyes moved around and he tried to focus on finding any strange scent he could, but he couldn’t find any human scents, almost as if there were no humans for miles. A noise to the right of him made Sabine turn his head in time to watch as one of the new bloods bared his fangs, his eyes going black as he tensed and lunged at Aubrey, catching both their Master and the protectors off guard.

It was at that moment that he caught the scent that had been bothering him as it came closer, and fast. His mind whirled in confusion as William Beckett and his “Dandies” practically materialized out of thin air, taking control of the minds of the new bloods, which would explain the sudden betrayal. As he snapped back to reality of what was happening, he ripped the new blood from his beloved Master, instantly regretting it when a decent chunk of Aubrey’s shoulder came away, clenched in the new blood’s mouth.

The smell of blood caused the remaining new bloods to go into a frenzy, fighting and attacking anything, anyone, in sight, desperate for that taste of blood flowing into their mouths. In the end of the fight, the new bloods had been taken by Beckett and his “Dandies”, of course without William getting any blood on his hands in the whole ordeal, and one of the two protectors was murdered, the other wounded badly, but nothing life-threatening. Aubrey had received more wounds when trying to fight off the frenzied new bloods, and some Dandies that wanted to have a little fun, so it was up to Sabine and the protector, Seth, to get their Master back home to heal.

Sabine never left Aubrey’s side, seeing to his care, and when there was something he couldn’t do, he called someone else to show him so he could learn. He was the one there when Aubrey finally came to again and Aubrey had been interested in how much his pet cared for him, and it wasn’t much longer after that Aubrey had asked him to be his lover.

“How much longer will you be at the store, my love?” Echoed a soft, stern voice in Sabine’s mind that made him smile from ear to ear.

“I almost done, Master,” he replied as he turned down a different aisle, “I will be leaving here shortly. Did you want me to bring you back anything, Master?”

“No, you don’t need to bring anything home, pet, but do be careful on your way home,”
Aubrey spoke, and Sabine could almost imagine him staring out the large french doors at the dark yard that was behind the large mansion. “My messengers informed me that the Dandies have been swarming the streets pretty heavy tonight, and I really don’t want you to get hurt... You know how much you mean to me...”

Sabine smiled, fighting off a swoon, something that normally wasn’t in his nature; this was just one of the many things Aubrey did to him. “Yes, love, I know how much you care for me,” he replied, smiling when he saw a little girl looking at the different candy bags hanging not that far away from him. Seeing things like this always made him think of someone he one knew, someone he grew up with who was just as indecisive as her. He made his way over to her, pausing a few feet behind her as he read her mind of the different candies she liked, amused at how similar she was to his younger brother. “I will get back to you soon, Master.” He moved a little closer and opened his mouth. “Can’t pick one out, little girl?” He questioned softly so he wouldn’t startle her.

She looked over her shoulder at him, flashing a toothy smile before shyly shaking her head. “Mommy said I could pick out any one I wanted, but I like them all,” she answered.

Sabine gave a very femmy chuckle, that was dangerously close to a giggle, as he moved over and knelt down by her. “Would you like me to help you pick one out? I don’t have anywhere else to be.”

She quickly shook her head and looked down. “I’m not supposed to be talking to strangers...”

“Aw, well I’m not a stranger,” he said in a reassuring, yet matter-of-fact tone.

The little girl lifted her brown eyes to look at Sabine, who smiled kindly at her. “You aren’t?”

Sabine shook his head and gave her a small wave. “I’m Sabine, which means I’m not a stranger. So, how about I help you pick out a candy so your Mommy doesn’t wait to long on you and end up scared?”

“Would you please?”

Sabine smiled and stood up, looking at the candy, eyeing the different ones that she did like, grabbing the bag of the type she liked the most and handed it to her. “Here you go, little one,” he said with a smile as she blushed and took the bag.

“Thank you, Mister Sabine,” she said with a cute little giggle before she took off the other way.

Sabine smiled as he watched her leave, his smile disappearing as he frowned in concentration when a faint scent hit his nose, making him look around for the source. He focused on the scent and followed it several aisles, his hopes rising as the scent did indeed grow stronger with each covered foot of distance. He turned down the aisle it was strongest, and passed a couple of guys pushing a shopping cart, talking quietly to themselves. When he realized that as he moved away from the two guys the scent started to weaken, he frowned and stopped, looking back at them.

He knew from sight that neither of them were the owner of the scent, so why did they smell like him? He furrowed his brows and went to walk past them once more, silently taking a deeper breath as they walked by, frowning deeper as he realized the scent was the strongest by them. He moved as far away from them as he could so he could keep an eye on the two.

“So, what’s with the blush every time I mention Deacon?” Andy asked as he looked at some fruits, since he didn’t have to look at Joe to know that said blush was burning his cheeks. “And quit lying, it’s annoying. Look, I promise I won’t tell Pete.”

Joe looked down at his fingers, suddenly interested in the dirt under the stubs he called nails. “I don’t know... I think I like him, but he’s a vampire, and if Pete can have his way he’ll be dead soon. Besides, he wouldn’t like me...”

“I think you know you like him,” Andy stated in a matter-of-fact tone as he looked over is glasses at the Jew, who blushed deeper. “Just don’t get too wrapped up in him until you know what’s going on, okay, Joe? I don’t want to see my friend hurt.”

[Author's Note: As much as it may have seemed like a filler chap, I promise you it wasn't =). I hadn't planned on posting this chap for a day or so because I'm almost caught up to what I have written so far, but you can all thank Emmi for asking if she had to beg for me to post the update lol. For those of you wondering, the vagueness of Sabine and his thoughts will be explained in a chapter that is currently being written =) Have a good day/night/morning all.]
