I did one more day of farm work then I was grounded for the week coming and unfortunately the weekend after. He did say though that I would only have to do one more day of farm work. I knew I deserved it for disappearing the other day, but I just wish he would have gone a little easier on me. I mean I had just lost my mother.

I got out of my father’s truck and started walking toward school. I was nervous every since my mother died all they do is stare at me with pity, the people who don’t know me. Then there are the rumors that my mother was a mob hit, and other stupidity. I was happy cause I still had my friends who knew the truth.

Today was a little weird cause I made it all the way to our lockers before I saw anyone. Usually Gerard would meet me outside and then we would meet up with everyone else here. Only he wasn’t even at our lockers. Amanda and Erelin caught me up on the things I missed over the weekend. As they spoke I felt someone’s arms go around my waist and pull me against their body.

“Good morning,” Frank said brushing his lips against my neck, as usual it sent shivers down my spine. I turned around and kissed him.

“Good morning,” I said. Then the bell rang, “I’ll see you at lunch,” I kissed him one more time then headed off to class.” I wondered how long this was going to last; me and Frank not fighting. I mean we haven’t been a full day without one saying something mean to the other.

First period went by without incident, the looks and whispers during class sucked, but Mrs. Doubtfire gave me a card. She said she was sorry to hear about my mom and that if I needed any help catching up on any of the work I missed from the other day she would be happy to help. It was all very nice.

“Have you guys seen Gerard?” I asked as we were about to split up for our next classes.

“No, I haven’t seen him all weekend now that I think about it.” Amanda answered.

“Mikey said he wasn’t feeling well,” Erelin said.

“I hope he feels better,” I said walking down the opposite hallway than them. I walked into social studies class and sat in my usual seat. I was relieved when Bob walked in and took his normal seat to my left. That only left the one to my right empty. That was usually where Gerard would sit.

Why all of a sudden was I so worried about where Gerard was? I mean its not the first time he…well actually this is the first time he’s ever missed school. Well at least since I’ve been here.

I couldn’t concentrate on class, so Furman kept calling on me. I kept giving him wrong gibberish as answers and the class would erupt into fits of laughter. What can I say Gerard wasn’t there to keep me on my best behavior and I ended up with detention again.

“Did you miss me?” Frank said coming up behind me. That seem to be his favorite way to greet me, by wrapping his arms around me from behind and either kissing my neck or whispering in my ear.

“Hmm maybe just a little,” I said leaning back into him. “I’m not hungry do you wanna go hang out in your car ‘till lunch is over?” I asked suggestively.

“Wish I could. but I have some research I have to do for my English paper.”

“But I thought we would at least get to spend lunch together,” I said. “I’m grounded until next week, so I won’t be able to hang out or anything ‘till then. Accept when we are in school.” I explained hoping it would make him blow off the paper.

“Its due tomorrow, sorry.” he really looked like he regretted it too. “I’ll give you a ride home, and drive really slow,” he said with a smile.

“Okay, fine.” I said with a smile. Then he left and I went to go get my usual sandwich.

I went over to our normal lunch table and sat down. Watching Erelin and Amanda cuddle with their boyfriends made me a little uncomfortable, cause I didn’t have Frank there. Finally I’d eaten all my food and the bell rang signaling time for PE. Class flew by, for the first time I enjoyed myself playing softball. Our team won.

“Is there trouble between the two of you already?” Erelin said.

“No, he said he had some research to do in the library,”

“Good cause you guys make a cute couple,” Amanda said. I blushed a little and we all left for out next class. Frank was waiting outside the door for me. He pulled me to him and into a deep kiss.

“Sorry again about lunch,” he said.

“It’s okay,” I said. We entered the classroom and sat in our usual seats right beside each other in the back of the classroom. Ten minutes into class a piece of paper landed on my desk. It read:

Do you think Jacob will be home after school?

I responded quickly:

No he’s working late, but before you ask. No you can’t come over cause I don’t wanna get into trouble. Plus I promised him I would stick with my punishment.

Then I returned the paper to his desk. He wrote back:

Come on he won’t even know I was over.

I responded:

No, but I will. We can take extra long to get home.

This time after he looked up from reading it I winked at him and he smiled. I had a good feeling about him and me. Not long after that the bell rang and it was time for us to go home. I packed up my stuff and Frank and I walked hand in hand out to his car. He started to open the door when I heard someone suck their teeth behind us. I turned to see Jamia.

“Oh so you downgraded?” she said talking to Frank.

“Actually I upgraded, can’t you tell by the fresh new smell,” I screwed up my face at what he said. She and he were talking about me like I wasn’t there. “Jamia I don’t feel like this today, so just go away,”

“I don’t care what you feel like…”

“You better shut up before I beat you down again. Trust I don’t mind being expelled I could use the vacation,” I said. Frank grabbed my arm and turned to look at me.

“Get in the car,” he hissed.

“Don’t tell me what to do,” I hissed back.

“Look now isn’t the time for this. I’m trying to keep you out of trouble at least for today,”

“Oh is she going to take up her mothers occupation? Or is she just going to skip strait to standing on the corner.” My eyes went wide, and I lunged at Jamia. Frank held me tighter.

“Jamia get the hell away from us,” he yelled at her, then he forced me into the car and locked me in. I kept trying to figure out how to unlock the electric locks but by the time I figured it out he was in the car and driving away.

“Why didn’t you let me handle that?” I asked after we had driven for a little while.

“Cause you kicking her butt wouldn’t have done anything but get you grounded longer,”

“She was talking about my mother,” I said as if that justified my actions.

“So?” I looked at him like he was crazy.

“You should know better than to just say “So”. My mother was all I had for a long time. No one disrespected her when she was alive and they aren’t going to get away with it now that she’s dead.” We arrived at my house and I jumped out as soon as the car stopped. I heard him follow.

At the top step he grabbed my arm and spun me to look at him. Neither of us said anything, but suddenly we were kissing and I was crushed against my front door. He lifted me off the ground and I wrapped my legs around him locking my ankles in place. He started kissing down my neck causing the usual response of shiver and goosebumps. Then he returned to my lips. Until finally we stopped and I returned my feet to the ground.
