I’ll be There- Matt White
“Hello and welcome. This is E! News with Ryan Seacrest, and today’s top stories. Rumors that a Jonas split was approaching have now been violently pushed to side amid the recent controversy surrounding the band. Last night, approximately at 1 am, senior band member and oldest Jonas Brother, married Dublin native Alison Mitchell. The news shocked unknowing fans who were not even aware that the couple were dating, or even knew each other, for that matter. Rumors of an unplanned pregnancy spread rapidly after the news was released, and the Jonas’ rep has neither confirmed or denied. A press conference will be held later today, and you can stick with us here at E! for any breaking news. People can only speculate how this will affect the future of the band, but I would like to be the first to congratulate the happy couple from everyone here at E!. Stay tuned for more about this issue in the next hour.”
I wrung my hands nervously on the hem of my newly ironed dress. I had arrived at the American Embassy, where the press conference was being held, a little over an hour ago, and my nerves hadn’t hit me until now. Upon arrival I was immediately swept into a flurry of hair and make-up. I met person after person who looked at me curiously before getting onto their job at hand.
“Don’t worry honey, there usually isn’t this much to do.” Roger assured me comfortably as the excited hairdresser went at my head with a number of irons and brushes. Apparently it was a treat to be able to do a girl’s hair for a change. “It’s just that we need everything to go in our favor today. You have to fit with the band’s image just as much as they do. It’s all about appearances, darling.”
Since then I have been plucked, prodded, made up, made down, hair pinned, and been forced to stuff my feet in a pair of absolutely horrid high heels. Now I sat with Kevin and his brother awaiting the bloody thing to start. Roger had gone out before us to address the crowd of reporters, and tell them the general information. Nick and Joe were arguing quietly about something or other (at one point I think it was about what flavor of soda is best, I swear they argue over everything.)
“It’s going to be ok, you know that right?” Kevin said softly, leaning towards me. I felt the familiar butterflies rise in my stomach at his close proximity, but pushed them down quickly. I had a whole other set of butterflies to deal with at the moment. “You go out answer a few questions, then we can come back and get straight on our plane to L.A.” He made it sound so effortless, but I knew that it was more than that. Instead of dealing with the problem ahead, I decided to change the subject for both of our comforts.
“What’s it like in L.A.?” I asked, hoping that this would be enough to distract Kevin from keeping our current conversation going. It obviously did the trick, because his eyes lit up.
“It’s ok. Sometimes I miss living back in New Jersey. It was a lot quieter there and I was around my family, which was nice.” I nodded in understanding, trying to recall the few memories of living around my family in Seattle. “But it’s also thrilling to live in such a big city. There is always something going on, and there is always something to see. Sometime at night I’ll just stand out on the balcony of our apartment and look at all the lights down below, and can’t help but be amazed.” His eyes glazed over in thoughts, and when he finally snapped out of his daze he looked embarrassed. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to ramble.” He said sheepishly.
“No” I assured him quickly. “It was nice… I mean it sounds nice.” This time it was my turn to blush in embarrassment. We both sat awkwardly for a moment reveling in our own lameness, when we were suddenly interrupted by Roger who had come through a door to my right.
“Ok guys, its show time.” He said eagerly clapping his hands together. “Remember what I said. Stick to the story that we’ve laid out, and try to keep things as light as possible. Now, let’s go!” He turned and headed back out of the door.
I stood up quickly, smoothing out my dress and my hair self consciously. Kevin took my hand firmly in his, and gave me a small smile and wink before leading us out the door. The room was absolutely buzzing, and for a moment I wondered if they had made a mistake and led us into a bee hive instead of the conference room. I would have been more excited if they were in fact bees. But sadly they were just regular reporters with regular camera men, who were snapping away.
We took our seats at the long table, each of us with our own mics. I sat between Joe and Kevin, who still held my hand in his. Everyone’s eyes seemed to be glued on either Kevin or me. I wanted to sink down in my seat and hide, but instead I had to plaster a smile on my face. Roger nodded his head and the reporters all started yelling their questions in unison.
“Hank” Roger yelled suddenly pointing at a chubby sweet faces reporter in the front of the queue. He was wearing a shirt with a large E! on it telling me exactly which network he was from.
“Alison, where did you and Kevin meet?” he shouted so that we could here. I froze for a minute, thinking. I suddenly felt very sick. We hadn’t discussed things like this. Kevin’s hand tightened around mine in an apologetic manner.
“Well, my best friend, Meredith, was an old school mate of Kevin. He had stopped into visit her at her place of work, and I just happened to be visiting her as well. We were introduced, naturally, and we just clicked.” I said sending a loving smile towards Kevin, who had relaxed a bit. There was nothing false about what I had said. We had met through Meredith, and we did click in some way. I just happened to leave out the fact that we had met yesterday, and we were both drunk.
“Julie” Roger yelled again, this time pointing at a slender looking Asian woman in a very expensive looking business suit.
“Alison, are you pregnant?” she asked her pen posed ready to write down my answer. I had to fight the nerve to roll my eyes. This was a question that I had been expecting.
“No, not to my knowledge” I said smiling back at the woman.
“Would you like to have children?” Julie the reporter yelled again. Roger looked angry.
“One question per…” he started glaring daggers at the lady. I cut him off however, feeling some pity for the woman. I knew what it was like to be a woman in the work place, and she was only doing her job.
“No, it’s fine.” I said smiling at Roger and then down at Julie. She smiled back, while Roger just looked a little agitated. “Yes, I would like children… someday. I am only nineteen, and Kevin’s career is so demanding. It just isn’t the right time.” I glanced at Kevin again, and his face had paled a little, but he still smiled back timidly. I chuckled a little. I had no idea that having kids scared him that much.
“Phil” Roger yelled again, pointing to a reporter who I couldn’t quite make out due to the vast number of people surrounding him.
“Joe, what do you think about the rumors circulating that the Jonas Brothers were breaking up?” He asked in a gruff Irish accent. I felt Kevin’s hand tighten considerably.
I was just as curious as the reporters. The whole reason Kevin had been out yesterday was because his brothers told him the band was over. When they had stormed into our room this morning Joe was yelling that he was sorry. I hadn’t heard anything about the issue since, so I was naturally interested to see how the matter had worked itself out.
“They are absolutely ridiculous. The Jonas Brothers will never break up. I mean people this devilishly handsome have to stick together.”He joked, flashing a million dollar smile to the cameras. I had to restrain myself from rolling my eyes a second time. Joe sure could be a charmer.
“Ok, next question.” Roger said, rolling his eyes. He obviously thought Joe was a bit too much of a charmer. “Evelyn”
“Kevin, what are your plans for the upcoming tour?” she asked. I leaned back in my chair glad that the limelight was turning from me to the band. Kevin’s answer was polite and informative, and I couldn’t help but smile as I watched him speak.
Questions continued, and I was kind of reminded of our small game of 20 questions. As soon as the press conference ended we were swept out of the embassy and towards the air port. I sat on the plane watching my home disappear below my feet, only to be replaced with an endless amount of ocean. The very thought of how my life would be like once this plane had landed was enough to scare me out of my wits. But still, I couldn’t help but think, this was going to be one big adventure.
