The days passed quickly and our time at home was drawing to a close. It was the day before we were to go on tour and I was feeling depressed at the thought of leaving our home. I had just finished checking my blood sugar, something my husband made sure I did everyday, and came out of the bedroom to find him on the phone. From the look on his face he didn’t like what he was hearing.
“This is our last day home.” Gerard said pacing across the room. “Laura and I had plans to spend the day together.”
I took a seat on the sofa and wondered who he was talking to.
He listened for a minute then sighed, “Fine. I’ll be there.” He hung up without a goodbye.
“Who was that?” I asked.
Gerard walked over and sat beside me. “Brian. I’ve got to go to a meeting. Some scheduling shit got messed up and we need to take care of it.”
I wasn’t sure why he was so upset. “Okay, is that bad?”
“I wanted us to spend the day together.” He explained. “Tomorrow we’re back on the road and we won’t have a lot of private time.”
Couldn’t help it I laughed, “Gee, we’ve spent a lot of time together on the road.” I snuggled up to him. “We find ways to be alone.”
He stroked my hair thoughtfully, “I’m not talking about that.”
I looked into his eyes, “That?”
He didn’t answer.
I figured this was as good time as any to bring up something he and I needed to talk about. We hadn’t made love since I’d discovered I’d bled after sex. I hadn’t wanted to make a big deal out of it but I was starting to wonder. “Honey, about private time and how we use it.”
He sat up straighter. “I’ve got to get going.”
I put my hand out to grab his arm. “Gerard Arthur don’t do this.”
The look I got was one of surprise. “Do what?”
“When I found out I was bleeding you took control of the situation. You called the doctor and you found out that it was okay. At the time you told me you understood that.”
He nodded, “I do understand.”
My eyes narrowed, “You understand that it’s not unusual and it doesn’t mean we can’t make love, right?”
I could tell he didn’t want to discuss this. “Laura, we weren’t making love we were having sex.”
Okay my hormones took over and I snapped. “You idiot.” I said hotly. “Take that back right now. You and I are in love. We make love. We don’t have sex.”
“We were playing a stupid game I thought up.” He answered.
I was about to yell at him when I saw the look on his face. He was scared. “Gee, don’t think that way, please. You know I was just as into the game as you were. I love it when we play games like that. But don’t you sit there and think for one minute that we aren’t going to make love until the baby is born cause that’s not gonna happen.”
“Laura, maybe it would be the right thing to do. This pregnancy isn’t normal. You’re having a baby that you thought you would never be able to have. I don’t want anything to jeopardize this.”
“I called the doctor myself.” I admitted. “I talked to him and he assured me that what happened isn’t unusual. It just happens sometimes. He also told me that we can continue to have relations” Yeah, I giggled at the word ‘relations’ “And not to worry.”
“When did you call?”
“Yesterday when you went to Mikey’s.” I answered.
He was puzzled, “How come you didn’t tell me?”
“Because I wanted to be absolutely sure it was okay. You haven’t touched me in a sexual way since it happened and well to be honest I’m really missing that.”
Gerard still didn’t understand, “I told you what he’d said.”
I nodded, “Yeah, but I was pretty sure you still didn’t believe it. I wanted to make sure for myself cause I’m planning on seducing you. I want our last night here at home to be memorable.”
My husband laughed, “Woman, I love you.”
“Yeah I know.” I giggled. “So since we both know it’s okay to make love, that’s what we’re gonna do.”
I could tell he was still concerned. He sat quietly a few moments then said, “So you’ve got something planned?”
It was nice to see he was interested in the plan. To be honest I was starting to feel a bit unattractive. “Yeah, glad you like the idea.”
His eyes narrowed, “You sound surprised.”
I decided to be honest about my feelings, “Gee, I wasn’t sure if it was just because you were worried about the baby. I thought maybe you didn’t find me all that attractive anymore.”
He looked at me as if I’d gone insane. “Oh fuck, Sugar. How on earth could you even begin to think that?”
“Well I have gained a few pounds.” I said looking down.
The damn man laughed, “Come on. You have to know how I feel about you.”
Shit, I was gonna cry. Stupid hormones.
Gerard placed his fingers under my chin and made me look into his eyes, “Laura, I love you. I always want you. You are so fucking beautiful to me.”
“Really?” I hated that I sounded so damn needy.
“Really.” He answered. “And if I didn’t have to go to this fucking meeting I’d show you right now how much I want you.”
The tone of his voice and his words sent a shiver down my spine. A very good shiver. “Really?”
He pulled me to him and kissed me passionately. His tongue brushed my bottom lip and my mouth opened to him. Soon we were both breathing heavily.
“Fuck, I have to go.” He said pulling back.
I giggled, “Guess we have to wait for tonight.”
He nodded, “Yeah.” I watched as he stood. “Don’t worry about dinner. I’ll bring something home with me.”
“Okay, sounds good to me.” I stood to walk him to the door. “How long will you be?”
He sighed, “I’m not sure. Brian made it sound like it’s gonna take a while. We have to meet with someone from Reprise, okay all the dates and then do some fucking photo shoot.”
“How come you didn’t know about the photo shoot before now?” I asked.
“Brian has a way of not telling us until the last minute. Less time for us to bitch I think.”
He stopped with his hand on the doorknob. “What are you gonna do?”
“Finish packing.” I shrugged.
My answer seemed to please him. “Okay, make sure you lock the door after I leave.”
I laughed “Okay, Mom.”
He gave me a stern look, “I’m serious, Laura.”
I didn’t want him to worry so I teased, “Okay, Serious.”
He shook his head. “I’ll see you tonight.” I had reached were he stood and he pulled me into his arms. “I love you.” He whispered before dropping a quick kiss on my lips.
“Love you too.” I answered. He walked out and I locked the door.

Twenty minutes after Gee left Alicia called. “Hey, what’s up?”
I sat down on the bed and looked at the half full suitcase. “Not much. Just packing.”
Alicia laughed, “Don’t you hate it? That’s what I’ve been doing all day. Wanna take a break and get out a while?”
I knew Gerard had expected me to stay home but I it wasn’t like I’d be going out alone. “Sure. What should we do?”
“Shop.” Alicia said with a laugh.
We agreed to meet in the lobby of my building in 15 minutes. I had just hung up the phone when Jenny called and invited me to lunch. I lied, told her I had another call, and put her on hold. Quickly I called Alicia back and asked if she minded if I invited Jenny to go with us. She assured me it was fine. Once back on the line with Jenny I asked if she’s like to go with Alicia and I shopping. She sounded genuinely pleased we’d included her in our outing. She said she’d head straight over. I told her Alicia and I would wait for her in the lobby.
I quickly changed clothes and applied my makeup. By the time I got to the lobby Alicia was already there.
“So is Jenny coming?” She asked as I stepped off the elevator.
I nodded, “Yeah, she said she’d be here a quickly as possible.”
We didn’t have long to wait. Jenny appeared a few minutes later. We all agreed to get a quick bite to eat first then do some shopping. As we walked along the busy sidewalk I asked Jenny how she was feeling.
“I’m doing okay.” She answered. “Still a bit stiff and sore but happy to be alive.”
I felt a chill run down my spine. I couldn’t help but still feel that somehow it was my fault she’d been attacked. If only I’d insisted on driving her back to the restaurant.
As we passed a music store Alicia said she wanted to duck in and grab the new CD by a group she’d just discovered. Since we were a block away from the restaurant, and knew there would be a wait to be seated, Jenny and I decided to go on. We would get our name of the waiting list.
At the next corner Jenny and I stood waiting for the light to change. Sometimes I wondered if I’d ever get used to living in a big city. The sidewalks were filled with people racing to unknown destinations. By the time the signal flashed allowing us to cross about forty people were waiting.
Jenny laughed, “It’s crazy isn’t it?” She had noticed how I was looking around at all the hustle and bustle.
I nodded, “Yeah, it really is.”
We stepped off the curb and began to cross the street. Suddenly I felt myself being propelled forward. Almost instantaneously I heard a scream and saw the truck. It had run the light and was heading straight for me.
