'Chapter' One: Foreshadow

It was a rather late afternoon at the Shinsengumi Headquarters, it would be easy to say everything was quiet, but everything WAS NOT quiet, and it seemed that logically speaking, it never WOULD be quiet there. Always, was there something going on, whether the young Ichimura brother, Tetsunosuke was screaming and chasing after the Comedic Trio for pulling some immature prank on him once again, or Hijikata screaming at said teenager to bring him his gods-forsaken tea. Ah yes, it never was truly quiet, or peaceful there, only at night. Though, even then, within the dusky darkness, Yamazaki placed on his post, atop slippery tiled rooftops, there was the obnoxiously loud snoring coming from the sleeping quarters, grumbles and grunts, and scrambling around in their sleep, the men of the Shinsengumi were constantly in chaos. Whether this be a day at patrol, or a day in the battlefield, peace was something not many of the men were used to. And for Tetsunosuke Ichimura, peace was something that he could no longer remember, since coming to work under the 'Demon Vice Commander' Hijikata. Being a page meant having your work cut out for you, that was certainly for sure.

But this afternoon was different, or at least, it would turn out to be much more interesting than one would have thought. Tetsu was busy, bustling around, rushing from the kitchen to deliver Hijikata his extremely hot tea. Muttering to himself about 'getting sick of making the damned tea', the fiery-red-haired young man nearly slipped upon the deck, but managed to catch his clumsy self, and regain his balance. Kneeling down before the shoji screen that lead into Hijikata's office and sleeping quarters, Tetsu coughed loudly, "Vice Commander, I have your tea, here." He said, trying his best not to be snide or retort at anything that may be thrown at him. (Whether this be metaphorical, or literal.)

Silence ensued the spiky-haired youth, and he quirked a bright-colored brow in slight curiosity. "SIR?" He questioned once more, tempted to knock on the wood part of the screen.

"Go away, Ichimura, can't you see I'm /busy/." Hijikata grunted form inside, sounding like he was deeply concentrating on something or another.

"Not exactly, Sir, /I can't exactly /see you." Tetsu grumbled under his breath, only to be heard a little more loudly than he would have liked.

"EXCUSE ME?! WHAT WAS THAT?" Hijikata's voice roared over any sparring practice of hysterical laughter that may have been heard on the grounds.

Tetsu flinched. "Uh, nothing, nothing! Just talking.. To.. UH... Myself! Yeah, MYSELF!" Tetsu piped in a panicking manner. "I'll just... leave the tea here, okay? Okay!" Tetsu sighed a sigh of relief as he heard no other response, and was about to sneak off before he heard. "You might as well bring the damn tea in now, brat."

Tetsu had to fight the urge to scream back "I'm NOT a brat", but bit his tongue hard enough to send him spiraling back into reality. The pain brought him back into the perspective that he'd either have to copy the code over one hundred times. (He swore, it was fifty more lines every time he broke a rule!) Either that or, if Hijikata was in a bad enough mood. (Which was usually the case) he'd have to clean the training hall or re-wash the laundry again, for the umpteenth time that day. It was an obvious sign that Tetsu's temper got the best of him often. Though Tatsunosuke, the elder of the Ichimura brothers, and the Shinsengumi's own worry-wart of a accountant, always had his warnings that echoed through Tetsu's mind before he did something that required a bit of thought before doing. ( Apparently there weren't that many times Tetsunosuke acted after he thought about the consequences. ) "Seppuku" was a constant threat from his older brother, and Hijikata, and it'd lost it's luster over the months.

Tetsu sighed heavily at this point, trying not to point in anger. Sliding open the door, he scooted in the room, placing the tea by Hijikata.

The tall, demanding Vice Commander glared over at Tetsu, giving one of his more mild demonic gazes, sighed heavily. The ebony haired man with piercing, dark coal-brown eyes and a fierce demeanor, spoke at once. "Go get Souji." He grunted the order, Tetsu blinking, noticing a letter in the hand of his fiend-like 'Master'.

"Uh, Yes sir!" He replied quickly, not bothered by the fact he had to go find Mister Okita. Okita was always cheerful and fun, despite the fact that he could easily kill you. The deadly Souji Okita was nothing more on his off-days, than the neighbor children's older playmate. The man who had an addiction problem with candy and sweets, and of course, dumplings, with long dark plum colored hair, and deep violet-blue eyes that seemed to smile at you in their own unique way. The man that Tetsunosuke looked up to, a deadly killer, but a loyal friend.

Hurrying off to find Souji like he'd been instructed to, Tetsu couldn't help but wonder what was so important that he'd have to go get Souji for? And what was with the letter? Questions puzzled him as he wandered around, asking a young member or two if they'd seen him, and eventually finding the genius swordsman sitting by the pig-pen, his beloved pet placed upon his lap as he fed the other pigs.

Saizou, the evil little piglet. The pink-fleshed 'mongrel's eyes blinked open. "With a loud "Que?" sound, the piglet sat up in Souji's lap, ready to hop down and charge-tackle Tetsu to the ground.

Souji looked up from feeding the other animals, and smiled. "Why hello Tetsunosuke! " he waved nonchalantly, and grinned. "What brings you here? Usually you're serving Mr. Hijikata tea at this time." He giggled lightly, brushing back long hair from his shoulders.

Tetsu sighed. "That's the thing, Mr. Okita, He wanted me to find you! I dunno' why, but-"

Souji looked at him, quite puzzled by the manner as well, of course, he was instinctively curious. "Really now? He wanted you to find me? The last I'd heard he was mad at me for stealing that Haiku book of his." Souji gave a grin, chuckling to himself at his last and most recent prank.

Tetsu sweat dropped at this. "You stole it again?" Though he couldn't help but let a goofy grin cross his young facial features. "Mr. Okita... But we should hurry, he looked really..." Tetsu tapped a finger against his chin in thought. He blinked at the answer he came up with. "He looked kind of... worried, angry, but worried, kinda'."

Souji also blinked, surprised by Tetsu's words. He knew well that Hijikata, despite his devil-like personality, would grow concerned over certain things and incidents, but he truly hadn't heard about any trouble that had blown into town. And even IF Sakamoto had returned to try his hand at getting arrested, ONCE AGAIN, Souji would already be aware of it, and on his trail. But this must be something deeper, much deeper, especially if HIJIKATA looked 'worried'.

It made Okita wonder, truly wonder, something must be up and about, especially if Tetsunosuke, the Shinsengumi's 'Puppy-boy', was noticing something unusual going on with Hijikata.

And so without much more pondering on that subject, Souji got up, carrying Saizou along with him, as Tetsu lead him back to Hijikata's office.

Once there, Tetsu let Souji pass him up, Okita knocking on the shoji screen, knuckles wrapping against the wooden frame. After a grumble, and some sort of inaudible curse-word, Hijikata could be heard heading for the doorway, his footfalls heavy against the tatami floor-mats. Sliding open the door with a loud slam. He looked to Souji with narrowed dark brown eyes, and spoke a few chilling words.

"We have to go to a funeral."
