Chapter 36- Cross my heart and hope to die

~Pete~
I stared in disbelief at the TV screen even though the commercials were on. Patrick was standing up, muttering cuss words to himself.

I tugged on his hand and pulled him down next to me. I tried to calm him down, but it didn't work since I was fuming myself.

“Who do you think did it?”

Patrick looked up at me. He was wide-eyed and looked almost scary.

“I bet I know who. The only other person in this house that has the fucking combination to the safe.”

I thought about it for a second then remembered who it was.

“I can't believe her!” I fumed.

I ran upstairs with Patrick trailing behind me. I slammed Natasha's door open and Natasha fell out of her bed, landing on the floor. She was only in her bra and underwear but I really didn't care.

She rubbed her eyes. “What the fuck, Pete! Why are you slamming my door like that?”

I stared at her. “You know why.”

“No, I honestly don't.” She said. She honestly looked confused, but I was about to remind her.

“I can't believe we trusted you to not do anything with the tape. I can't believe we even trusted you to live in this house!”

She stared at me wide-eyed and afraid. “I didn't do anything with the tape, I swear. Are you sure that you didn't leave the safe open?”

I shook my head. “Nope, neither one of us has opened it.”

She rubbed her bare arms. “I don't know what happened to it. I never told anyone the combination.”

Patrick pushed by me and squatted down in front of her. “Then who opened the safe?”

“I told you, I don't know!” She yelled, tears streaming down her face.

She pulled her knees to her chest and wrapped her arms around her legs. Her chest was racked with sobs and she was shaking.

Patrick, being the softy that he is, pulled her into a hug and kissed the top of her head.

“I believe you. I don't think you'd go through this whole crying episode just to cover up a lie.”

She shook her head. “I would just be very firm and act very angry.”

He stroked her hair. “Okay, are you sure that you didn't tell anyone the combination?”

“Positive.”

He kissed her tear stained cheek. “I guess we'll just have to find out who it is.”

She put her arms around Patrick. “I'm so sorry that this is happening to you guys. Even though I didn't do anything, I feel like it's my fault anyway.”

“Well, it's not so you can stop feeling that way. But I just want you to know,” He lifted her chin with his finger. “Even if it's you who did it, I you will always be welcome here. Whether we like it or not, you are the mother of my child. So I want to be with you every step of the way.”

I could tell by her smile that he made her happy. If she wasn't so young, I'd be jealous.

“Okay. But I swear, it wasn't me. Now we just have to find out who did.”

We asked just about everyone. I asked Spencer, Jon, and Brendon. And of course, I asked Ryan. He was sitting on the couch looking at his nails when I asked him that next morning. I put a hand on each side of his head and put my face close to his. I felt a sudden urge to kiss his warm lips, but I refrained.

“Listen to me carefully. I want you to answer this question as truthfully as you can. Do you understand?”

Ryan smiled. “Of course. Why would I ever lie?”

I rolled my eyes. “You do not want me to answer this question. Anyway, as you have probably noticed, the sex tape of me and Patrick got released the other day. Now, was it you that broke into the safe and put it on the Internet?”

“Oh, no! I would never do that!” He said, his face in shock.

I looked him in the eye and squinted. “Are you sure?”

“I promise, I didn't do it.”

I looked at him one last time before slowly pushing away from him. After one last look over my shoulder, I went into the kitchen where Patrick was.

“So, was it him?”

I shook my head. “He said no, and I could tell that it wasn't him.”

Patrick put his head on my shoulder. “Then who could it possibly be? We asked everyone that was in this house!”

Suddenly, I remembered something. “Natasha's friend, Azure. We didn't ask her. That's it!”
I ran outside where Natasha was sitting on the porch swing reading.

“Natasha, I know who did it.”

She lowered her book. “Who?”

“Azure.”

She threw her book down. “It couldn't have been her! I never told her the combination!”

“Tash, she is the only other person that's been in this house that we haven't asked yet.”

She sat there, looking like she was thinking. I stood there, waiting for her to answer.

“Oh, no.”

I sat down next to her. “Oh, no, what?”

“I did tell her. I remember her waking me up. I was half asleep and she asked me. Since I was so tired, I ended up telling her. I can't believe that I didn't remember that until now.”

She put her head in her hands. “I am such an idiot.”

“Look, it isn't your fault. You didn't realize what you were doing.” I said, putting my arm around her.

“It is too my fault. I feel terrible.”

“Natasha, calm down. We'll get to the bottom of this. I'm sure that Azure wouldn't have done that to us without a reason.”

I wiped the tears that were streaming down her cheeks.

“Pete, what if it wasn't her?”

I sighed. “It was her, but that doesn't mean that she was the brain of the operation.”

“Are you saying someone else might have convinced her to do it?”

I nodded. “That's exactly what I was thinking.”

I got up, offering Natasha a hand after I faced her.

She laughed. “Pete, I'm not that pregnant yet. I think I can make it up on my own.”

Blushing, I dropped my hand. I was thankful for my darker complexion.

We walked into the house together and I looked for Ryan. I found him up in his room, ironing clothes.

He smiled. “Why, hello there! Come right in.”

My eyes stayed in a squinted position. “Ryan, I know what you did.”

He raised an eyebrow. “What did I do?”

“Cut the crap, I know you tricked Azure into stealing the tape.”

His smile widened. “Bravo, I never thought you'd figure it out.”

Confused, I asked, “You're just going to give up that easily?”

He shrugged. I had to try hard not to stare at his bare chest. The memories of us together flooded back into my brain.

Shaking away the thoughts, I continued. “You told me that you didn't steal the tape. You lied.”

Ryan shook his head, laughing. “Exactly. You asked me if I stole the tape. I didn't. Azure did all the dirty work for me. I just told her what to do. So technically, I have been honest with you.”

Natasha shook her head. “How did you get her to do it? I can't believe she gave in like that.”

He chuckled. “It was easy. I just kissed her a little, then she immediately caved. As long as I promised her for more, of course.” His smile widened.

I groaned. “Don't tell me you slept with her.”

He kept his grin on his face. “Well, I didn't plan on it, but I suppose it did end up that way.”

“She's fucking fifteen, Ryan!”

“Yeah, and Patrick didn't do the same damn thing?”

“He was drunk, he didn't know what he was doing.” I snarled.

He laughed, putting his arm around me. “Yeah, and that makes it so much better.”

I shrugged his arm off of me. “Get out. I want you out of our home. We gave you a chance and you blew it.”

He stood there, arms crossed, smirking. “No, I don't think so.”

“Get out!” I yelled.

“Okay, I'll leave. I'm sure that the press would love to hear about Patrick's new baby.”

“You wouldn't.” I said, my teeth still clenched shut.

He laughed some more. “You don't know me very well, do you?”

He walked around his room, looking at the platinum record on the wall. He turned and smiled at me.

“Relax, I won't say anything. As long as you let me stay.”

Natasha ran after him, but I grabbed her shirt just before she got to him. Her eyes were filled with hatred and tears.

“You sick bastard! You have no idea how hard this is for me, so don't you dare say anything!”

She wrenched for him again, but I kept a firm grip on her.

“Aw, sweetie, already having the pregnancy mood swings? Don't worry your pretty little head. I won't say anything as long as Pete agrees to let me stay.”

She bared her teeth, and tried to bite his hand reached for her.

He jumped back a little. “Oh, and make sure to keep her away from me, Pete.”

Natasha tugged on my shirt and said, “Pete, meeting now!”

We exited his room and Natasha looked at me with her pleading eyes.

“Pete, please let him stay. As much as I truly hate him, I really don't want him to say anything about me and Patrick.”

I looked away, unsure of what to do.

“Pete! He could go to jail for this! I'm only fifteen, after all.”

I hit my forehead. “Shit, I forgot about that! Well, I really don't want Patrick to go to jail, so I guess I really should let him stay, huh?”

She nodded.

I sighed. “Okay, let's go tell him.”

When I reached for the door knob, she stopped me. I looked over at her to see why, and she put her arms around me. She put her chin on my shoulder and wrapped her arms tighter.

I put my arms around her too, breathing in the scent of her hair.

“I love you, Pete. I guess you are kinda like a brother to me. A brother I think is hot, but still a brother.”

I smiled, then kissed the top of her head. “I'm glad you feel that way.”

“And I'm also extremely jealous of you that you get to have Patrick. You aren't even having his kid!”

I chuckled. I felt very fortunate for that. “Yeah, lucky me.”

“Ugh, it's just- I love him so much, and it hurts to know that I can't have him. He's just everything I'd ever want in a man.”

She sighed. “I doubt I'll ever find someone.”

“Aw, come on, Tash. You'll find someone and you know it. There are way too many things to like about you to not like you. You just have to be patient.”

She combed my fingers with her hair as she talked. “I've never even had a boyfriend. I'm tired of having to be patient because I feel so pathetic.”

I laughed. “Natasha, you've slept with a rock star and you live with a bunch of them. I don't think you have anything to feel pathetic about.”

“You're right. But it's so hard to find a good emo these days, I just-”

Ryan walked out of his room and put his hands on his hips.

“So, uh, am I staying?”

I pulled away from Natasha and faced him.

“I guess. But only if you promise that you don't say anything about Natasha or Patrick.”

He grinned. “I promise. Cross my heart and hope to die.”
