The next week passed a lot differently to the previous one. At school on Monday, Jez and I battled internally about whether to tell Bre and Seth about our new secret lives, as, well, superheroes. We decided against it. I spent the day trying to practise my telekinesis on the sly. I was only caught staring at my pen- instead of doing my work- twice.
Monday night we went back to karate. It felt good to slide back into the familiar rhythm of the workout.
Tuesday I went back to the graveyard, this time finding larger sticks and branches. Alice met me afterwards.
Wednesday was karate again. I felt more comfortable, and was happy, eager, even, to push myself over my limit.
By Thursday, I’d managed to make it through the day without glares from teachers for not concentrating or strange looks from my peers when my pen floated a few millimetres from the top of my desk. Again I went to the cemetery, and again Alice met me.
And Friday? Well, Friday was the best day of the week.
Thursday night, after I’d returned home, I’d decided to take Alice to the movies. I was just about to call her when I received a text.

I’d love to go.

It was Alice, of course.
Suddenly it occurred to me; Alice would already know what the movie was about. She’d know how it would finish. So maybe she wanted to spend time with me? Was that why she’d been coming to meet me most evenings this week? My heart danced with this revelation.
I knew it! My sister exclaimed victoriously. Storm Brandon, you have a crush on Alice Hale!
Shut up! You don’t see me teasing you about Joshua.
I’m not teasing, brother. I’m happy for you. Happy someone’s caught your eye.
I bet you’re only happy because now I’m able to stay out of your head long enough for your little fantasies.
Well... yes, but I’m honestly happy for you.
I know, I’m just teasing. Why don’t you invite Joshua to the movies tomorrow night?
Are you sure you’re okay with that? You won’t get overly protective, will you?
I’ll try my best.
Thank you, Storm. Truly.
I fell asleep to the background noise of my sister texting Joshua.
The morning dawned bright and beautiful, though the air held just a hint of the crispness that was to come in a month’s time. Winter was approaching.
The day did not lag as is usual when you are anxious for it to pass.
I was picking Alice up at six, so we could have dinner, before seeing the movie at seven.
Joshua and Jezabel were doing the same, though they were going to a different restaurant.
the evening was cool, though not cold. Alice looked absolutely stunning in a dark red cocktail dress and strappy black heels.
At dinner, I discovered that my first impressions of Alice’s age were wrong. She was actually only one month younger than myself.
“My height makes me seem younger than I actually am,” she had explained to me.
I don’t recall what happened in the movie- I spent the time staring into Alice’s eyes.
Later, Alice and I were sitting in my car in front of her house, talking.
“Do you want to know what the movie was about?” she joked.
“Was it good? It was okay.”
“Then not particularly, no.” We were silent for a few minutes, until I asked, “would you like a lift to the warehouse tomorrow?”
“Of course. Jezabel will ride with Joshua anyway,” she informed me. “I should go now- it’s getting late.”
“Wow, it’s almost eleven. Thank you, Alice, I’ve had a wonderful night.’” With that, I leaned in and kissed her, full on the lips.
After a few minutes, she broke off, whispering, “I must go. I’ll see you tomorrow. Thank you, Storm.”
I drove home sower than usual. I was in a daze.
Jez whistled. Saucy, she said, as I pulled into our street.
How long have you been paying attention?
To your sparkling conversation? Not long. Joshua left a few minutes before you kissed Alice. I have to say brother, it was smouldering. I was overheating over here.
Oh, shut up. Did Joshua kiss you, then?
Yes, he did.
I’m exceptionally glad I missed that, then.
How was your dinner? We had Chinese.
Italian. And do you expect me to give you every single minute detail of my date?
No, I don’t, but, knowing you, you will think about most of it, and dream about the rest. All I have to do is stay up to see it. Unless I want to dream about Alice, too.
That’s very comforting, you know that? I let myself in the house, locking the door behind me, as our parents were already in bed.
Whatever. Go to bed. I expect the group will want to see what you can do tomorrow. Alice is probably waiting impatiently for another searing kiss, too.
Jezabel, remember me telling you to shut up? You could really take that to heart about now.
Only for you, brother.
I laughed. Sure. You just don’t want me to pay attention when you’re with Josh.
You caught me, she laughed back.
I need a sleep in. don’t wake me early tomorrow.
Don’t worry. I need to sleep too. All this kissing must have worn us out.
Jezabel...
Shutting. Go to sleep.
I thought about retaliating, but I really was tired.
