As angry as Cassie was with that Gerard guy and as much as she tried to hate him for being so self centered, she couldn't help but think about him. That night at work, he
would pop into her head at any moment she wasn't concentrating on a patient or talking to her partner.
Why did he have to be so arrogant? Why couldn't he have been sweet and polite? A gentleman.
No, he had to be an ass. All night long, that's all she did. Question why. Because before he turned into whatever it was he turned into right before she got into her car, she
actually kinda liked him. He was kinda cute in a dirty sort of way and Lord knew, it had been forever since she'd been on a date. Being new to Jersey and working long hours at
the ambulance service, she didn't really have time to look for dates. Hell, she hadn't really had any time to even meet new friends. The only friends she'd had in the area were
her coworkers and they weren't really friends, she'd never hung out with any of them outside of work.
After her shift ended at midnight, Cassie went home, showered, then settled in her bed, watching some tv. As she drifted off to sleep, the last thoughts in her mind were of
Gerard.
The next day, she began to wonder if maybe she overreacted at Gerard about what he'd said and started to wonder if she'd ever see him again to apologize for being so harsh
before she left. Figuring that her best chance was at the coffee shop, she headed there a half hour earlier than she normally did and kept a close eye on not only the passers by
but, also all the customers as they came and went, ordering the various brands of energy boosting caffeinated beverages. As she waited, she had 4 such beverages of her own
and no luck at seeing the guy that had knocked her down the day before.
She didn't give up hope, though. She continued to go in early every day for the next 3 days, hoping, praying, that he'd come in at some point. But, by Thursday, she'd decided
that it was hopeless. She'd blown it the first day, and Friday, she just went in at the time she'd always gone in, just about 3pm, so she had time to have at least 2 of her drinks
before having to be at work at 4.
Sitting with her back towards the interior of the coffee shop, she just stared out the window, her mind wandering as she watched the people and cars cruise back and forth, she
was startled by a soft touch on her shoulder. Whipping around, her breath caught in her throat as she came face to face with the one she'd been unable to locate all week.
Before she could say anything, he pulled his hand back and said, "I know you hate me and I understand why but, I just wanted to apologize for what I said to you the other
day. That's not something I'd normally say and it was out of line. I'm sorry."
He began to turn away and Cassie quickly said, "I'm sorry too. I didn't mean to say that stuff I said before I left. It was completely rude."
He turned back towards her as she spoke and when she finished, he said, "no, I earned everything you said and more."
She smiled softly and said, "would you like to sit down for a minute?"
Grinning in return, he replied, "you don't mind?"
Shaking her head, she said, "not at all."
He sat down then took a sip of his mocha before saying, "do you think we can start over? I mean, see if we can have a conversation without me knocking you on your ass or
sticking my foot in my mouth."
She smiled. "I think maybe we can do that."
"I just want you to know that the stuff I said the other day, that's not anything I ever say. I can't even honestly tell you where it came from because I'm usually pretty shy and
quiet."
Her brows furrowed. "Then why the hell did you say it?"
His cheeks flushing slightly, he smiled nervously and said, "I thought I was impressing you. I mean, I saw that look on your face and I thought I'd just go for it. Of course, it
went way wrong."
Cassie grinned. "That it did. But why were you trying to impress me? To make up for knocking me down or was it just being a hard ass because you think you're all that cause
you're a comic book writer?"
His eyes widened. "Ouch. That stung."
She smiled. "Well, that's how you came across."
He nodded shamefully. "And I apologize. Like I said, that's not me at all. And I'd really like to make it up to you."
Cassie eyed him curiously. "And how do you want to make it up to me?"
His caramel eyes sparkled as a crooked smile spread across his face. "I was thinking dinner. Maybe a movie."
Cassie grinned in return. "Maybe I'd be up to letting you make it up to me that way." Then she glanced down at her watch. "But, I'm gonna have to get going right now because
I've got to get to work." Then she stood, grabbing her drink and her purse.
Gerard quickly stood with her. "Wait. How am I supposed to know if you decide to have dinner with me?" He asked, following her towards the exit of the coffee shop. When she
didn't answer right away, he went on. "Can I call you?"
She looked at him and nodded. "Sure. You can call me. That works." Then she continued heading to her car.
He still followed her. "Well, can I have your number, then?"
She'd reached her car by the time he'd asked the question and as she unlocked her door, she smiled coyly. After opening the door and climbing in, she reached into the pocket
of her work shirt, pulling out her pen and small notepad that she used to write patient vitals and stats on. She wrote down her number then handed it to Gerard. "Here you go."
Then she gave him a gentle push from the car, pulling her door shut then starting the car as Gerard stumbled then quickly caught his footing and tapped at her window, shaken
at her actions.
"Hey!" He yelped as she lowered the window.
She was still smiling as she replied, "I said I've gotta get to work, Mr. Comic Book Star, I can't make my own hours and I can't be late."
"But when can I call you?" He asked quickly as he watched her put the car in gear, fearing she was going to pull out and possibly run him over.
"I'm off the next 2 days. You can call me anytime then."
He nodded and smiled, thankful to have gotten that much out of her. "Awesome. I'll call you tomorrow then. Bye, Cassie."
She waved as she checked for traffic, readying to pull out. "I'll talk to you tomorrow. Bye, Gerard." Then she zoomed away, leaving him standing alongside the road, watching
as she vanished from site, shaking his head.
It had been a very long night at work for Cassie, she had no free time whatsoever all shift long and she didn't get to leave until well after midnight. When she finally got home,
she did her nightly ritual of removing her boots, checking her messages on her machine, then plugging her cell phone in to charge, when she noticed she had a text message.
The number was unfamiliar but when she saw the words, she knew exactly who it was. The message was received at 4:30pm, that alone had her chuckling. The message itself
read 'Hey, it's Gerard, I know I said I'd call you tomorrow, but I thought that if I texted you tonight and asked you to dinner for tomorrow, you'd say yes. Let me know when
you get a chance.'
She shook her head smiling. He was absolutely adorable. Hitting the reply button on her phone, she wrote, 'I know it's late and you're probably in bed but, I just got your
message. If you let me know what time you wanted to have dinner tomorrow, I'll let you know if I can pencil you in.'
After sending the message, she put the phone down on the counter and headed into her room to get her pajamas so she could shower off the grime of her day. She'd just
pulled her dresser drawer open when her phone went off again. Laughing, knowing it was Gerard, she took her time, getting all the clothes, then went back to her phone to
read the message he'd sent her.
Opening her phone, she pulled up the text. It read, 'I was thinking 6pm. Nice dinner, maybe a chick flick for you. Sound good?'
She laughed aloud. "Chick flick? Really?" Hitting reply, she wrote, 'You were doing okay with the time and the dinner. As long as it's not like super fancy nice. The chick flick
just killed it though. I think I might have to turn you down now. Sorry.' Then she hit send and unplugged the phone and sat on the couch, awaiting the next text, knowing it
would be mere seconds away.
And she was right. Just over a minute later, her phone sang again. She immediately opened the text with a grin, reading it. 'Okay, no chick flick. What kind of movie would you
like to see?'
She replied with, 'I'm a lover of blood, gore, and action. Anything involving that would be great.'
Soon, instead of a text, her phone rang. She smiled, shaking her head. "Hello?" she answered.
"Hi, it's Gerard."
"I assumed," she replied.
"I decided to call, the texting shit gets old," he said with a soft chuckle.
She smiled. "I know the feeling. But, you're not going to be able to keep me on the phone long, I had a very long night at work and I need a shower and my bed badly."
"Oh, okay," he said, almost sadly. "Well, I just wanted to make sure that we were on for tomorrow night then I'll let you go."
"As long as you don't take me to some huge fancy place and you don't drag me to some mushy ass romance movie. It's just not my thing."
He chuckled. "I think I can handle that. And that's either going to make you a lot easier to please or impossible to please."
She smiled. "Guess you'll have to wait to find out, huh?"
"Guess I will."
"Okay, I'd like to go take my shower now, okay?"
"Oh, yeah, sure," he replied nervously. "So, I'll call you tomorrow to find out where I can pick you up at?"
"Or maybe where I can pick you up at." She retorted.
"What?" he asked in shock.
"I like to be the driver. Is that a problem?" She asked, smiling from ear to ear, knowing it was a lie, but wanting to see if it would get to him.
Uh..uh...I guess not," he stammered. "I mean, it would be a first for me, but I'm an open minded guy so, sure, why not?"
She laughed. "Good to know. Okay, call me tomorrow. Just not early. I like to sleep in on Saturdays. If you call me before one, I'll hunt you down and kill you."
He chuckled. "I'll call you at one oh one."
She rolled her eyes. "Smartass. Goodnight, Gerard."
"Goodnight, Cassie."
