In The Name Of The Father
Chapter One
It was the summer of 1923 and life was profitable. Myself and my companion, Alexander Bowman, had made our way over to a quiet, if sometimes dreary, little village just outside Dorset. The people of this area, we noticed very quickly were deeply religious. For some reason unfathomable to me this did not sit to well with Alexander.
He does not hold much stock in the concept of religion as a man of science I think the idea actually insulted him in some way. Yet still the knowledge that the people here followed their religion to the letter seamed to aggravate him more than it should. I think it is to do with people not acting the way he expects people to act. There is a lot of things about Alexanders past that are still to this day a mystery even to me, and to be true, I do not wish to find out about it.
We had hoped to have a little break when we decided to come here. Nothing every interesting happens near Dorset and that is exactly what we were looking for. (Our last little excursion we both nearly ended up six feet under.) Alas peace and tranquillity has a nasty habit of eluding us when we are on our travels.
This tale takes place I the lounge across rooms in the small hotel (the crossmans arrow I believe it was called) we had planned to have our afternoon tea service brought to us however we were informed none to kindly I might add by the owners daughter that all if the staff had departed to and afternoon mass procession. Alexander was not pleased at this at all.
`How could a whole house of staff just up and leave their post in the middle of the day no less. It is disgraceful and disrespectful to the gests. People in this area do not have a clue about propriety. It is outrageous.`
The girl was tall and very slight normal for a girl of her generation. She looked about seventeen or maybe even eighteen. Her long black hair was a contrast to her ivory white skin and here eyes were a piercing blue. She was beautiful in a way but somehow I got a strange feeling of madness of this child. Like a warning signal that she could very well be dangerous to us in some way. I think it is because she very rarely blinked.
`You have been left with me so no sir not all of the staff have left. And since you are the only customers here my mother thought I would easily be able to handle your needs. I am merely informing you of the whereabouts of the other staff. It is well known of this area for people to go to mass in the middle of the day. I can assure you sirs that if I did not have to sit and baby sit the two of you I would be there as well.`
Her voice was light as the air yet still there was that edge that warning vibe coming off of her that frightened me a little. For even though her tone was cheerful there was definitely coldness to her attitude. Do these people really take their worship this seriously here? Or am I just being paranoid maybe this was just what a bored teenager acted like now.
`I shall bring your tea shortly gentlemen. However there is a matter I must deal with post haste if you would just bare with me for a few moments more. I shall be back shortly.` She held a smile on her lips that told me no, no I was not just imagining it this child was defiantly one to be watched and not to be underestimated.
She left swiftly still with that smile. I repressed a shudder that went strait for my spine like a hungry dog with a bone the second she left. Alexander noticed this and rolled his eyes dramatically at me he had no patients for little things such as fear he told me frequently.
`Lets go for a stroll around the village today. The weather is warm and we can truly enjoy it while the town`s people are at their place of worship. ` I could hear the slight tremor in my voice I hoped he missed it thought probably not judging by crease in between his thick eyebrows. My attempts to distract him from me and back onto his irrational dislike for the people of this area clearly not working.
`Yes lets. I could use some fresh air after being stuck in this musty old place for hours. That girl truly needs to learn some manners. That kind of rudeness was unwarranted in my opinion. `
He had grabbed his light jacket and begun to put it on facing out towards the window neither of us herd her come in.
`Well sir maybe if people did not feel the need to through insults I would not need to become so defensive in regard to the place I was brought up. You are a fine one to talk about someone`s manners sir. Here is your tea but clearly you are so it was a waste of my time to make it for you. Oh and also the mass is now finished and the rest of the staff has now returned. Call on one of them if you wish for anything else. `
I honestly believe that is the first time anyone has managed to sneak up on Alexander this is definitely not good.
