Katrina Hendrickson stood in her bedroom, staring out of the window at the U-haul van in the driveway. All morning long the hired movers had been carting boxes into the house and garage. She wasn’t surprised at all when her father casually mentioned he was dating someone, neither when he took her out for ice cream and admitted that he and his lady were getting pretty serious after a mere five weeks.
Even after that, If someone would have told her then that in seven months time her dad would be married again she probably would have laughed in their face. But here they were, and here she was, looking down at her soon-to-be step-mother and her stoner son moving into her house one weekend before the big event.
“Kitty Kat! Grace and Brendon are here, come down and join us for lunch!”
Katrina groaned, letting her head fall back so that she was staring at the ceiling. “Be right down, Daddy!” She called back, heading downstairs and slamming her bedroom door shut as she did.
“Hi there, doll face.” Grace said when she noticed Katrina leaning against the kitchen archway. She was holding the garage door open and smiling brightly.
“Hey, Grace.” Katrina replied softly, pressing her lips together in a tiny semblance of a smile.
“You remember Brendon, don’t you?”
Katrina stood up straight, arms folded, peering at the boy in faded gray skinny jeans and beat up Chucks who had come through the door Grace was holding for him with a box in his arms. “Of course,” She said, lips twitching.
“What’s up Kat?” Brendon smirked, dropping the box at his feet and shaking his shaggy brown hair out of his eyes.
He was good looking, she could admit that, with his dark, chocolate colored eyes, distinct spade shaped nose, nice full lips and strong jaw. Good thing Grace Urie was such an attractive woman, because despite the small amount of scruff (What her father called peach fuzz.) on his chin he resembled his mother a lot, even down to his lean body frame and ample backside. Katrina thought he could have been a girl with those curves.
“Hello Brendon.” Katrina glowered at him as she brushed past, joining her father behind the island counter.
“Bren!” Grace scolded, sighing and shaking her head. “You can’t leave that box in the middle of the floor.”
“Sorry Ma.” He grinned.
Grace shook her head again and entered the kitchen where Katrina was looking over her father, Mark’s shoulder while he prepared lunch.
“It smells amazing honey.” Grace said from Mark’s other side.
He beamed down at his fiancé and leaned down to give the petite woman a kiss. “Chicken Mozzarella Paninis,” Mark slipped an arm around Grace while holding a spatula in his free hand. “Hope you kids are hungry!”
Katrina wrinkled her nose and stepped away from the couple and their PDA, opening the fridge. She didn’t want to be a sourpuss. She liked Grace overall- She did make her father happier than he had been in years, it was just that she felt they were putting a rush on things. Why did they need to have the wedding so soon? What was the rush?
And then there was Grace’s son.
Kat looked at him out of the corner of her eye as she thought of him. When they’d met, Kat sworn she had never met anyone as annoying as he seemed to be. He had a non-existent attention span and smiled way too much (Seriously, who the hell was happy ALL the time?!). And when he wasn’t smiling, he was high. Or bragging about getting high. Kat wasn’t looking forward to having him in the house on a regular basis, doing nothing other than smoking pot… She could just imagine him hanging around and smiling stupidly while gawking at all her friends when she invited them over.
Kat took a bottle of Vitamin Water out of the fridge and leaned against the counter, glancing over at Brendon, who was sitting at the kitchen table, amusing himself by ripping a paper towel into shreds. She scoffed and his head raised to catch her eye. Brendon smirked and balled up the paper towel pieces to toss them in the nearby trash can. Kat quickly averted her gaze, looking down at the water bottle she was now sipping from daintily.
“So Bren, have you decided what you’re going to do then?”
Kat looked up at her father curiously, who was addressing Brendon with his back turned to them all while he flipped the sandwiches.
“I think I’m gonna stay at Palo Verde,” Brendon replied. “If you guys don’t mind, that is. I mean, it’s for a good reason, not just because I don’t want to go to a private school.” He shuddered.
“May I ask what the reason is?”
“Bren’s in the school band.” Grace said proudly.
“Well, there’s that, and then my friends… Besides, we’re so close to the end of the year… I just really want to graduate along with my classmates.”
“There’s nothing wrong with that,” Mark said, flipping the last sandwich and turning back around to face his family, a large smile on his lips. “We’ll just have to get you some sort of transportation…”
“So he gets a car?!” Kat exclaimed, envy and jealousy immediately darkening her features. She'd been begging her father for her own car for ages and hadn't been obliged.
Brendon grinned.
“Pale Verde is a good drive from here, Kitty Kat. And it’s not going to be a brand new car… I was thinking,” Mark turned from Kat to Grace. “That you give the kids your car, Gracie. And we’ll get you something new.”
Kat’s jaw dropped as Grace threw her arms around her father’s neck and kissed him passionately.
“Okay, ew.” Brendon said, shielding his eyes and vocalizing exactly what Kat had been feeling.
“So we’re sharing the car?” Kat interrupted shamelessly.
“Well, yes. Brendon can take you to school in the mornings instead of me now, and then you can take turns driving it on the weekends.” Kat looked over at Brendon who was still grinning.
“Sounds awesome, no complaints from me!” He exclaimed. “Thanks, Mark.”
“Yeah… thanks dad.”
“Anything for my family.” Mark said as Grace continued to hug him.

Later on that night, Kat trudged up the stairs, carrying a laundry basket full of clothes she’d just gotten out of the dryer. On the way to her bedroom, she had to pass Brendon’s new room, where he was inside getting settled with the door open playing ‘Santeria’ by Sublime at a very high volume.
“How’s the unpacking going?” She asked him, standing in his doorway.
“Great!” He was smiling again, cheerfully hanging clothes up in his closet.
“Hm,” Kat began. “I just wanted to, you know,”
“Spy on me?”
“What? No! Just wanted to see how you liked the place.”
Brendon shrugged. “It’s nice. I can make myself pretty comfortable anyplace though.”
Kat nodded. “Okay, I have laundry of my own to put away, so…”
“Hey Kat? When I’m done here I was going to go out back and fire this up,” He said holding up what looked to be a cigarette, but after noticing there was no filter on the end of that cigarette Kat knew it was a joint. “Care to join?”
Kat shrugged. “I dunno, maybe. You better go out front though, Daddy’s…” She paused. “The parental unit’s bedroom window is right above the patio out back.” Brendon nodded and tossed the joint onto his unmade bed and she left him to go back to hanging his tight ass pants alone.
Inside her bedroom, Kat dropped the laundry basket and cracked her door just a sliver. Ordinarily, it would be completely shut, but this way it was easier to keep an eye on her… step-brother.
At the moment he was bouncing all over, dancing and singing along to the music when he was supposed to be working. Kat was so busy watching him that she nearly jumped three feet in the air when the phone on the nightstand beside her bed rang loudly.
“H-hello?”
“I told you I would call you tonight slut. What are you up to? Mommy and brother all moved in?”
It was Kat’s best friend, Kendra. They had been friends forever, since third grade. In fact, Kendra would be one of the bridesmaids at the Wedding the following Saturday.
“Very funny, Ken. But yes, most of their things are over here now and big brother is across the hall right unpacking.”
“Mmm,” Kendra began, “Is he cute? Send me a picture.”
“He’s the annoying pothead, remember? Does it matter if he’s cute?”
“Yes. Do I have to teach you everything Kitty? There are certain things that one overlooks about a boy if he is completely gorgeous.”
Kat rolled her eyes. “He asked me if I wanted to go outside and smoke pot with him.”
“So go! If I was there I would. I should come over right now to meet him.”
“I don’t smoke weed, Ken. And you can meet him tomorrow.”
“Fine, fine.” Kendra muttered.
“Oh and guess what? Brendon won’t be transferring to our school.”
“Really? Well that’s disappointing. Why not?”
“He’ll miss his friends, he says, and wants to graduate with his class. But whatever, I’m glad he’s not coming. The car is the part I’m pissed off about.”
“The car?”
“He’s getting his mom’s car to drive to and from school, and my dad’s going to get her a new one. We‘re supposed to share on weekends, though.”
“Are you serious? This is amazing!”
“No, Ken. Not amazing. Did you hear what I said? It’s basically his car. I’m not going to be begging him to use it.” Kat said defiantly, with a firm shake of her head.
Kendra sighed. “Kat, you need to get over it. Whether you like it or not, your father is marrying Grace next weekend and she and Brendon are going to be a permanent part of your lives. The quicker you realize this and make an effort to get along-”
“I AM making an effort here. You just don’t get it.”
“You’re wrong. I’ve been through this remember? Sure, I didn’t inherit a step-brother my age but it wasn’t easy for me at first either. But I mean, now I have two half-siblings that I adore and Christie and I get along wonderfully. Just try to understand, Kat. They are going through the same thing you are, and Brendon’s got it worse. His whole life has been uprooted. I don’t blame him for not wanting to leave his school to start over!”
Kat sighed. She loved Kendra dearly, but she hated when she went on her ranting and lecturing fits. Mostly because she was always right.
“You’re right Ken, as always.” She admitted.
“You’re damn right I am. Now get the hell off the phone and go keep your new brother company while he puffs his brains out. Call me tomorrow!”
Click.
Kendra hung up before Kat had time to reply. She huffed and set the phone back on the receiver, staring through the crack in the door again. She didn’t notice any movement coming from Brendon’s room, but she still heard his music playing, so she got up and opened her door, peering into the hall before she entered it.
Craning her neck around, she realized that Brendon must still be in his room somewhere, so she played it off my edging into the bathroom, reaching around on the wall to flip the switch.
“Occupied!”
“What the hell!” Kat squealed. “What are you doing in here?!?”
“Taking a piss?” Brendon chuckled.
He was standing in front of the toilet, pissing, and kind of turned his back to keep her from catching a glimpse of his dick in the mirror.
“I… uh…”
“You should probably leave now?”
“Right, yeah, sorry!” Kat said quickly. She backed out of the doorway red-faced, and hurried back down the hall to her room.
Somehow, Kat knew this was merely the first of many embarrassing moments to come.
