Week one with the new members of the family was over and the day of the wedding had finally arrived. There had been no problems, and much to their parent’s surprise, Brendon and Kat were getting along swimmingly. Mostly by staying out of one another's way. The Hendrickson home was filled with jittery family members and friends. All except Grace, her grown daughters, Kyla and Kara, and her mother, Gail. They were all getting ready at the family worship center. Kat stayed home and dressed with Kendra in her own room and once she’d finished she excused herself and knocked lightly at her father’s door, wanting to steal a moment alone with him.

“Come in!” Exclaimed her Uncle Robbie from the other side. Kat pushed one of the double doors to the master suite open and slinked inside.

“Wow Squirt,” Her uncle said, using the old childhood nickname he’d given her. “You look absolutely breathtaking.”

Kat blushed and stared down at her shoeless toes. “Thanks.”

“Uncle Rob is right, sweetheart, you look like an angel.” Mark added, smiling proudly at his only daughter in her bridesmaid dress. It was an A-line, strapless but still modest gown and was a shimmery, silver/pale blue (The lady at the bridal shop called it Diamond during the fitting.) which brought out her gray eyes perfectly. Her face was properly made up, and her raven colored hair was piled atop her head, secured by dozens of pins. Standing there like that, Mark thought she resembled her mother more than she ever had before.

“Thank you, daddy.” Kat whispered. “Think we can have a little chat?”

“Of course. What’s on your mind honey?”

Kat took a deep breath. “I just wanted to let you know how happy I am for you. I mean, I may not have been as supportive as I could have, and I apologize for that. I just thought that you and Grace were just rushing into this, but the truth is my own selfishness clouded my judgment, dad. Grace is a wonderful woman and you are far too special and full of love for me to try and keep to myself anymore.” Kat spoke sincerely and from the heart, and when she was through, tears were shining in both father and daughter’s eyes. “I also promise to do my best to get along with Brendon to make sure his transition into the family goes as smoothly as possible.”

“Oh, darling, darling sweet pea!” Mark beamed, pulling Kat close to his chest for a hug swiftly and firmly.

“Love you, daddy. Congratulations.” She sniffed.

“I love you too Kitty Kat. I love you so, so much. You’ll always be my best girl. You’re my angel, sweetheart.”

“Ohhhhhh,” Uncle Robbie cried, joining the embrace by flinging his arms around the both of them.

“Alright, alright. Let’s let Kitty Kat go Rob, before she ruins her make-up.” Mark said with a chuckle as he rubbed his eyes.

They parted, and Kat kissed and hugged her dad and uncle once more before returning to her room.

The ceremony was beautiful and so was Grace. Kat watched with tears in her eyes as she walked down the aisle, and felt truly happy to have her marrying her dad. Brendon, on the other hand looked positively bored during the whole exchange, though he did clap extra loud when their parents sealed their union with a kiss. They didn’t need to travel to the reception, as the building it was being held in was on church grounds.

The recreation room was decorated beautifully. Pale blue, baby yellow and white flowers adorned tables, crawled up walls, and hung from the ceiling along with streamers and small plastic cherubs and doves.

“Wow, it’s beautiful.” Kendra breathes as she and Kat entered together.

“Isn’t it?”

But Kendra didn’t hear her reply. She was too busy looking around the room, scanning the faces of the many Urie cousins and handful of Brendon’s friends from school.

“Ken,” Kat sighed.

Kendra giggled. “Sorry Kit Kat. There’s a lot of potential, here. And speaking of potential, where is that brother of yours?”

Kat looked at Kendra like she was sprouting tentacles. “You consider Brendon potential?”

“And why not? He’s a looker. There’s big bro now...” Kendra nodded towards the front of the room where Brendon appeared out of nowhere, adjusting a microphone bent over the nearby piano. Kat rolled her eyes and sighed irritably. Sure, they were getting along okay, and she promised her daddy and Kendra that she would put forth an effort to get along with him, but hearing so much about her step-brother (Especially from her best friend.) was driving her up the wall. And she wished people would stop calling him her big brother, he was only older than her by a two months!

Next thing she knew Kendra was tugging her closer to the front as Brendon began speaking into the mic, grinning and joking playfully as he introduced each member of the wedding party.

“-Myself, and my beautiful new step-sister, Katrina.” He waved at her, and Kat thought it was quite overdone, as was everything he did. She laughed though as the crowd clapped for them. “The maids of honor, my older sisters, Kara and Kyla- give it up for the walking, talking gargoyles ladies and gentlemen.” His sisters glared at him threateningly as he baited them both, much to the delight of the crowd.

Kat had to hand it to him, he was naturally entertaining and charismatic, but she wasn’t expecting what would come next at all. Brendon introduced the best man, Kat’s Uncle Robbie, and then played a few short notes on the piano.

“And now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for, the reason we’re all here… Ladies and Gents I introduce to you for the first time anywhere, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Hendrickson!”

The back doors were pulled open to reveal her father and his bride, hands laced together, gliding into the room to the roar of the crowd’s applause and cheering. Kat grinned as they neared, her father winking and blowing a kiss in her direction. Brendon waited on the clapping to die down before explaining that the couple needed to have their first dance as husband and wife. So Mark drew Grace close to his chest and kissed her hand when Brendon introduced them once more, his fingers beginning to stroke the ivory keys of the piano. He sat straight up on the bench and adjusted the mic again before he started to sing:

“I will never find another lover sweeter than you, sweeter than you.
And I will never find another lover more precious than you, precious than you.
Girl you are, close to me just like my mother, close to me just like my father, close to me just like my sister, close to me just like my brother…
And you are the only one you’re my everything, and for you this song I sing.

And all my life, I prayed for someone like you, and I thank God that I finally found you.
All my life, I prayed for someone like you, and I hope that you feel the same way too, yes I pray that you do love me too…”

“Oh my god, why didn’t you tell me he could do that?!” Kendra gushed.

“You think I knew he could do that?” Kat groaned. She watched their parents dancing, but her eyes kept wandering toward Brendon, quite in awe of him and his secret talents.

Kat felt sort of inadequate and out of place as everyone fawned over Mark and Grace, and of course, the golden child, Brendon. She’d wandered off alone to sneak a drink of two of the unguarded champagne, but was thwarted when the beloved step-brother suddenly appeared next to her.

“What kind of shenanigans are you planning getting yourself into, little sister?”

Kat huffed. “Get outta my way, Urie. And don’t call me ‘little sister’. We’re the same goddamn age.”

“Ooh, stealing alcohol and taking the lord’s name in vain inside church walls? Why so edgy, Hendrickson?” Brendon teased, his chocolate colored eyes twinkling with mischief as he hopped up and sat on edge of the table.

“Technically, these aren’t even church walls, Urie. And besides, you’re one to talk,” Kat glared at him, snatching up one of the open bottles. “Did you have to get high to put on your little performance a while ago?”

“Close enough, and no I'm not high. Yet.” He said, sticking out his tongue at her. Kat rolled her eyes. “What are you hanging at the booze table for anyway? What’s got your panties in a-”

Brendon stopped talking abruptly, and Kat turned to see what had gotten his attention. Kendra had wriggled their way in between them, with another boy on her arm. He was a few inches taller than Brendon, with softer features. His hair, which he wore semi-long, bangs combed neatly to one side, was dark and soft looking, and Kat thought she saw the remnants of a little facial hair trying to grow back where he had shaved around his chin and mouth. Brendon grinned when he saw him.

“Kit Kat. This is Spencer Smith. Brendon’s best friend. He goes to Palo Verde with him. Spencer, this is your bff’s little sister, Katrina. She likes to be called Kat. Hates it when anyone other than me and her dad call her Kit Kat though. So don‘t do that.”

Kat gave Kendra a warning look, but still held her hand out to shake Spencer’s. “Nice to meet you, Spencer.”

“Likewise, Kat. And you can call me Spence. All my friends do.”

Kat smiled slowly.

“Hear that? Spence wants to be friends, Kit Kat.” Kendra giggled.

Kat glared at her best friend while Brendon cracked up. “I think Kit Kat wants to be friends too, don’t you little sis?”

Kat felt her cheeks immediately flush, becoming warmer and warmer. She pursed her lips while her nose flared angrily before spinning on her heel and stalking away. Deciding she'd had absolutely enough of him for one day.

“Awww, come on Kat, we’re only having fun!” She heard Brendon call after her, but she didn’t stop or look back once.
