Goody Two Shoes.
Katrina couldn’t sleep. It probably had something to do with the newlyweds next door to her room. Her father and step-mother weren’t leaving for their honeymoon until the next afternoon, and so they’d been celebrating their union since they all returned from the reception.
Ick.
Wrinkling her nose, Kat climbed out of bed and shuffled down the hall and the staircase into the kitchen. She pulled a bottle of water out of the fridge and then headed into the living room to watch some TV and maybe fall asleep in peace only to see that she’d been beaten to the punch.
“What are you doing down here?” Kat asked as she sank down onto the couch, folding her legs beneath her.
“Couldn’t sleep.” Brendon shrugged.
“Me either,” Kat replied flatly.
Brendon flipped through the channels idly and cocked his head to the side. “Got an earful of the ‘rents ‘celebration’ too did ya?”
“It was horrible!” The gray-eyed girl exclaimed in clear disgust. The both of them laughed together.
“Disturbing.” Brendon chuckled.
“Very.” Kat added. It got quiet again.
“Hey, you know I was just playin’ earlier don’t you? At the reception? You went missing before I could tell you I was just dicking around. I didn’t mean to piss you off.”
Kat shook her head. “Don’t worry about it. Guess I was just being overly sensitive.”
The new step-siblings fell silent again, all four eyes on the television.
“By the way, my friend Spence? He thinks you’re really pretty.”
Kat smiled. “Does he?”
“Yup.” Brendon replied without taking his eyes off of the TV.
“Oh,” Kat said, her smile turning into a small grin. “Nice.”

“Okay kids, you knew there would be certain rules,” Mark said as a still groggy Brendon and a cereal munching Kat sat at the kitchen table the next morning.”So pay attention and let me lay ‘em out for you. First off, no parties. Period. And when you do have guests, no more than one or two at a time, mind you, they need to be gone before midnight.” Mark paused and looked at both his daughter and his step-son intently before continuing, trying to re-enforce the fact that he meant business.
“Now. About the car… Your mother and I got you a prepaid debit card for gas and other little expenses. This money should last all week if you budget. When it runs out, even though it should not...you catch the bus or hitch a ride with your friends. Any questions?”
Brendon yawned, tousled his already messy hair and shook his head, straightening up in his chair when Kat nudged him slightly.
“No daddy,” she answered her father. “We understand.”
“We’ll call you when we land,” Grace added softly. “Now come give mom kisses, Bren.”
“Ma…” Brendon groaned.
Kat giggled, hugged and kissed her father, and did the same when Grace approached her.
“Alright kiddos, we’ve got to go or we’ll be late. Take care of your sister, little Urie.”
“Will do Mark. You kids have fun now.” Brendon joked, and the adults laughed.
When goodbyes were said and the parents were gone, Brendon grinned deviously and flew back inside the house. Kat furrowed her brow and followed.
“What are you up to?” She asked, as if she were afraid of his answer.
“Planning a little get together.” The impish grin never left his lips as he went through the refrigerator and then began dialing numbers on the phone.
“Wow, did you hear a word they said?”
“Oh get off it, goody two shoes. Do you always do exactly what you’re supposed to? If so, it must be one hell of a boring life you lead-- Hey Spence… yeah I know what time it is but listen…” Brendon’s voice trailed off as he left the kitchen and headed up to his bedroom, leaving Kat standing there scowling.
She wasn’t a goody two shoes! And her life wasn’t boring just because she liked to follow the rules. At least she didn’t think so. Rules were set for their own good! It wasn’t like she was a snitch. Or a suck-up. She was just…sensible. Yeah, that’s it!
But in her mind all Kat could hear was, ‘Adults are supposed to be sensible. And besides, Spence thinks you’re pretty.’ She smiled again to herself and took the stairs two by two to call Kendra. She’d show Brendon just how insensible she could be!

The next few hours were spent tidying the house. Kat made sure to take extra care in the kitchen and family rooms because she had no clue how many people Brendon invited. When she was satisfied, she went back upstairs and was putting clean sheets on her bed when Brendon tapped lightly and pushed her door open without waiting for an answer. Kat narrowed her eyes.
“Don’t you know when you knock you’re supposed to wait for someone to answer before you barge through the door?
Brendon smirked. “Don’t you?”
Kat blushed, remembering how she’d walked in on him in the bathroom on his first night in the house. Brendon’s smile widened knowingly. “Is there something you need?” She snapped, quite annoyed that she was still so embarrassed.
“Oh,” Brendon began, leaning in the doorway. He crossed his arms, and Kat could clearly see that the last few buttons on his plaid shirt were unbuttoned, slightly revealing the elastic of his red underwear above his jeans and the tiniest bit of pale stomach. She averted her eyes immediately when he cleared his throat. “I was just about to go swoop up my friends, maybe stop for a few things to make our little get together a little more…interesting. ‘Festive’, if you will. Anything you want or need while I’m away?”
Kat’s left eyebrow raised. “No, thank you. Festive?”
“You’ll see.” He nodded, still grinning devilishly.
“Ooh-kay.” Kat chuckled.
Brendon shot her another bright, mischievous, lingering smile before disappearing just as quickly as he’d shown up. Kat shook her head and went back to making her bed. Her step-brother certainly had a charming way about him, she could hand him that.
