“Sit still Kat.”
“I’m trying!”
“No really. Sit still before I poke you in the damn eye!”
Kat sighed. She was sitting at her desk in her bedroom as Kendra was applying liner to her top lids. She hadn’t wanted to get all glam, but Kendra insisted that just the right amount of eye make-up, lipstick and perfume, along with a top that hugged her in all the important places would have any boy in attendance eating out of the palm of her hand. But there was only one boy whose attention she wanted that night.
“There. Perfect.” Kendra capped the lipstick tube she’d been using with a florish and leaned back to admire her handiwork. “Gorgeous.”
Kat took a look at herself in the mirror. She had to admit, Ken did a good job. Her gray eyes seemed to pop out from behind the smoky eyeshadow, and her glossy lips looked nice and plump. “Thanks, Ken.”
“No problem. Just remember that tonight is about letting your hair down. Break some rules. Have some fun.”
“I am going to have fun.” Kat repeated.
“Yes, that’s right. And don’t worry about big brother,” Kendra smirked. “I think I can manage to keep occupied and out of your hair for the rest of the night.”
Kat giggled. “We’ll be sisters for real then!”
Kendra shook her head violently. “You’re getting way ahead of yourself, Kit Kat. Besides, you and Bren aren’t really related. So that wouldn’t make us anything. Hell, you and him could even…”
“Oh just stop, Kendra Abigail. That’s gross.”
“I’m just saying. And it’s notgross. Brendon is not related to you. Weird yes. But not gross.”
“Whatever Ken. Let’s get this over with.” Kat opened the door and headed downstairs where she could hear the stereo in the living room playing loudly.
“Where are all the boys?” Kendra giggled.
Kat nodded towards the sliding glass door that led into the backyard. Kendra walked over, passing a couple Kat didn’t recognize snuggling on the love seat.
“Yup. They’re out here. Smoking pot I bet. Come on.”
Kat frowned, but followed reluctantly. She didn’t like weed much. She never understood the appeal and didn’t particularly like the smell, either. Kendra walked right up to the deck table the boys sat around, smiling confidently.
“Hello boys.”
Kat looked around the table as the boys greeted them. She recognized Brendon, of course, and then there was Spencer, who smiled shyly at her (Brendon rolled his eyes and nudged him to pass along the rolled cigarette when he caught him), and three other boys she didn’t know.
“Ladies.” One of the boys said, he was about Brendon’s height, with dark hair covered by a beanie cap and a camera hanging from his neck.
“Ken, Kat, these are my buddies Shane,” He pointed to the beanie kid. “You know Spencer from the wedding, and then there’s Jon and Ryan on the end there.” Jon also had dark eyes and hair, with the faint sign of a five o’clock shadow.
“Nice to meet you gu-” Kendra’s sugary sweet voice began, but Kat interrupted.
“I know you! Hey Ken, we know him!” Kat exclaimed, pointing at Ryan. “He goes to school with us. Don’t you? He’s one of those artsy kids. Hangs in the courtyard. You know, the one with the notebook!”
Everyone turned to look at Ryan, who had turned a light shade of red.
“Yeah… I think I remember… You look different tonight.” Kendra giggled. Ryan didn’t answer, but his cheeks were still pink.
“Okay whatever. Guys, this is Kat, and her best friend Kendra.” Brendon continued. The boys exchanged pleasantries with the girls and went back to passing the joint and their conversation on video games.
“So… I guess we’re gonna go back inside.” Kat said, trying to send Kendra a message with her eyes.
“I’m gonna stay a while, Kit Kat. Do you mind?”
“Guess not. See you all back in the house, then.” Kat sighed, and turned to walk back up to the house alone.
“Wait, wait,” Brendon said suddenly, grabbing her arm. “I’ve got something for you, Kat. You guys take care of Ken there, I’ll be right back.”
He led Kat into the house, leaving the sliding door open. When they reached the kitchen, he released her and got to his knees to rummage in one of the counters. “Hold on a sec- heh, got it.” He called triumphantly.
Kat peered down at Brendon strangely, until he got back up with a bottle of Grey Goose vodka, grinning at her proudly. “Festive enough?”
“Holy shit! Where did you get that?!”
“You think I’m giving you that information, little sister?” Brendon replied. Kat opened her mouth to object, but he shook his head. “I know, I know, you’re not my little sister. Just enjoy it, okay? Got it especially for your drunken ass.” Kat couldn’t help but smile as he went back out to his friends. She held the bottle up, looked at it in awe and immediately got one of her father’s shot glasses from the upper cabinet.
“Pour me a glass?”
Kat looked up to find Spencer standing there smiling.
“Sure.” She replied, grabbing a second glass and setting it on the counter. Kat opened the liquor bottle and topped each glass to the brim.
“Thanks,” Spencer grinned, taking his glass and holding it towards her. “Bottoms up?”
Kat smiled at him and clinked her glass against his. “Bottoms up.” She said, turning up the shot and wincing as the liquid made it’s way down her throat. It burned slightly, but she was determined not to let Spencer see her gag. “Hot.” She hissed.
“Good stuff though.” Spencer said, setting his own glass back down.
They looked at one another again, and his blue eyes twinkled. Kat suddenly remembered what Brendon told her about Spencer thinking she was pretty and hurried to pour herself a second shot.
Spencer asked for another also, and chuckled as he watched her pour it. He asked her if she was nervous.
“What?” Kat rasped after downing the second shot. “Nervous? No.” She was trying to be as collected and convincing as possible. Not that it was working.
Spencer looked amused. “I won’t bite, I promise. I’d like for us to be friends.” He said with an unmistakable undertone.
Kat’s eyes widened and she took another gulp of liquor. “I’d uh… I would like that. To be friends.”
“Good.” Spencer smirked.
The two of them took drinks at the same time then, and Kat chewed her lip nervously as Spencer asked her questions and then told her about himself. She learned that Spencer still lived with both parents and had two younger sisters that happened to be twins. Kat had always wanted a sister, and Kendra was always the closest thing she’d ever had. Or would ever have. Even if her father and Grace had a daughter together, Kat would be thirty-four by the time she was seventeen. She got along with Brendon’s sisters, but they were both way older than them also.
Kat and Spencer migrated into the living room, where the party-goers from outside had returned. She made sure to keep her bottle close, some of Brendon’s friends looked a little sketch.
“Looking kinda cozy, Spence.” The writer boy, Ryan, smirked.
Kat noticed he’d become a whole lot more relaxed since the group came back inside. Spencer shook his head, but his eyes twinkled before he grabbed Kat’s hand and asked her to dance with him. She accepted, and he pulled her close, swaying to the beat of the song. The couple from earlier, who had been making out on the couch got up and joined them, and Kat overheard Kendra exclaim that she wanted to dance too.
“Come on, B. Dance with me!” She tried to plead with Brendon, but he was unrelenting.
“Sweetheart,” He said. “I do not dance.”
“Aww!” Kat couldn’t see Kendra’s face, since her own was buried in Spencer’s neck, but she would just imagine her best friend’s lips forming a perfect pout.
“Sorry honey. Hey, why don’t you ask Ryan? It would probably give him the thrill of his week.” Brendon said.
“Or month!” Spencer added.
The boys all chuckled and Kat sighed as she and Spencer’s bodies moved together slowly. “Are you cool?” He asked her in her ear.
“Yes.” Kat nodded. In fact she was better than cool. She was warm and tingly from her vodka buzz, and the way Spencer was holding her snugly while he brushed his face against her neck made her want to do things she would have never even thought about had she not been drinking.
She was certain it was the liquor talking, but she really wanted to kiss Spencer. So she did. She kissed his neck first, and he did the same. Kat smiled and looked up at him. Spence smiled back. Kat tilted her head and pressed her lips to his attentively. Kat sighed as she kissed her back, but if she would have been paying attention (Or had her eyes open at all…) she would’ve noticed Kendra grinning her approval from beside them, dancing with Ryan, and the dark eyes of her step-brother settled on them instead of his video game.
“I’m trying!”
“No really. Sit still before I poke you in the damn eye!”
Kat sighed. She was sitting at her desk in her bedroom as Kendra was applying liner to her top lids.
