"Hey Mikey," an older, more developed Rose-Mary said to a 13-year-old Mikey as she disappeared
into the math room with her air-headed boyfriend, Benjamin. Benjamin was what every girl
wanted. He was handsome, romantic, brave, strong, and, of course, a football player. Oh how
Mikey despised football players and their preppy girl friends. Rose-Mary was different though,
so different. She wasn’t fake and stupid like all the other girls. Rose-Mary hardly wore girly
little outfits, rarely dyed her hair at all, and only wore make-up for special occasions. Yes,
Rose-Mary was an angelic sort of creature, pixie-like hair and a curvy figure. Not too skinny
like the aforementioned fakers. Benjamin wasn’t good enough for her. Mikey wasn’t even sure if
he, himself, was good enough for Rose-Mary. Mikey realized that he had been standing in the
doorway of the math room.
"Mr. Way?" the math teacher, Mr. Welch.
"Sorry sir. I'm leaving, sir…. Can I have a late pass? Please?" Mikey managed to say.
The ordeal at the math room left Mikey embarrassed, his pale cheeks rosy with
humiliation. It pleased him, though, that Rose-Mary was the only one in the class that didn’t
laugh at him. Mikey hurried along to his first class, History. All the teacher ever talked
about was how everyone should be a Christian. Last night, Gerard had talked to Mikey about
something even MORE embarrassing. Mikey pushed the thought of his mind. He didn’t want to think
about that EVER again. NO WAY. Mikey handed the slip of paper permitting him to be late to the
instructor and sat in his usual lonesome desk in the back.
"Hi Mikey, what’s up? Do anything fun last night? I did!!!" squealed the happy little
chipmunk that always sat next to him. Her name was Cheyenne; she was short, blonde, and very
enthusiastic. Mikey rolled his eyes in a mix of amusement and slight annoyance. He didn’t mind
her. She meant well and without her, Mikey thought, it would be lonely back here. He smiled at
her kindly and she giggled that sweet little giggle. Her innocent smile and bright eyes always
made him laugh. History went fast today, Cheyenne had told Mikey all about her new kitten and
how it always ran it to walls. They giggled at her story until caught by the teacher. They were
scolded and left the room as soon as the bell rang.
Mikey was one of the few students that had an early lunch. It was only second period,
so Mikey wasn’t even hungry. Cheyenne wasn't in this lunch, so Mikey was lonely for thirty
minutes each day. Flipping the pages of his collection of Edgar Allan Poe's best stories and
poems, Mikey was fairly pleased with his day so far. That is, until Benjamin and his friends
decided to ruin the entire thing. The strong group of boys strode over so stealthily that Mikey
didn't even notice them.
