Chapter Two

Screwing with the nurses was just as much fun as I thought it would be. By the end of the night I had managed to pants 5 nurses, trip 3 doctors and successfully lock 2 nurses out of the nurse's station. All in all a very good night. It was 8:30 am when Idecided to return to Hazel's room. It was only his second day here and Ithought that I might give him a hand and maybe show him who my friends were. Iwas walking through the halls when I saw a boy with black hair and a slight eye twitch being escorted to the mess hall for breakfast. I shook my head as Iwalked past. 'This must be hard for him,' I thought. He didn't take well to tragedy.

I wasn't paying any attention when I walked into his room but I was at full attention (That IS what he said) when I realized that Hazel was only in a towel. His red hair was sticking to his face and dripping water droplets onto his god like form. Ilooked from his body to his face and saw the deep blush that adored his cheeks and couldn't help but blush myself. This boy was just so amazing."Um...I'll...Um...I'll be in the hall." I mumbled before walking back through the door.

It didn't take long for Hazel to get dressed and by the time he walked out of his room to meet me I had calmed myself down. I wasn't blushing as bad as I was before but I still had some color to my otherwise colorless cheeks. I looked over at Hazel to see if he was ready to head to breakfast and saw that he was in the usual uniform. He was wearing the white scrubs that were required and his hair was messing and looked like he had just rolled out of bed. It gave him a sexy but cute look and I could feel my blush come back with a vengeance.

I didn't say anything as Imade my way toward the mess hall. I wasn't looking anywhere but the floor, but when I finally took a peak at Hazel I saw that he was looking at the passing people.

"Do you know any of them?"He asked as he saw that I was looking at him. I looked around me at all of the faces. I didn't know many people because I spent most of my time in isolation but I did recognize a few faces. I nodded in response to his question.

I pointed to a boy who was on the bigger size. He was about 6 feet and very muscular. "That's Gabriel." I pointed to the smaller boy next to him, "and that's Spencer." Gabriel had short blonde hair and a semi-tan body. He had been at the asylum for about 3 years. When he first arrived he picked a fight with me and it didn't end well. Gabriel might have had his strength on his side but I had my speed, my mind, and aknife on my side. We became friends after that. Not long after I introduced him to Spencer.

Spencer was a small boy around 5'6" and he was shy. He was quiet and everyone would do what he asked. He was a manipulative little bitch. He acted all innocent and quiet but his intentions are always impure. He arrived 2 years before Gabriel and clung to me after we met. He tried to use his antics on but once, and only once. It was the only time he had ever heard my voice and it was to threaten him. I could see what he was trying to make me do. I had twisted his arm and shoved him against the wall telling him that if he valued his life he would stop.

After Gabriel and Spencer met they just stuck together. Spencer would use his twisted mind to terrorize the other patients and if anyone tried to mess with him Gabriel would set them straight. They never dared to bother me after their fist encounters with me and they would even sit with me at lunch. They weren't what you would call true friends but they were good acquaintances. They filled the role I wanted them to play.

"After you get your breakfast, go over to them and tell them that you have my old room." Hazel nodded and walked through the door. I stayed in the hall longer watching as Gabriel and Spencer made their way into the mess hall. I fallowed after them and took in the scene of the mess hall scanning the faces for the boy who I had seen before.

His name was Eric, and he was my best friend. He had arrived 3 years ago, about a week after Gabriel. He never heard my voice but he always told me that if I were ever to talk I would have a sexy voice. I felt slightly guilty for depriving my best friend of such a thing. We had so many things in common. We would take up pages upon pages upon pages with our messy handwriting. Eric and I shared almost everything with each other. We were incredible close and I hadn't noticed how much I missed him until I saw him that morning.

I saw him sitting at his usual spot at are usual table. We had sat there for years in the same seats, and if someone wasn't there we would leave a chair for them. Just like we use to there was an empty chair next to my long time friend for my absence. I sat in my spot next to Eric and turned to him with a smile. "Hey Eric," I spoke softly.

"Hey Evan," He replied without looking up from his meal. I couldn't help but stare at him with shock.

"Can you see me too?"

"Um...I don't know who can see you but I can't. I can just hear you. Ya know....kinda like the radio stations."He gave a grin in my direction.

I lat out a laugh, "Yeah Eric I know."

"So who's the lucky guy that can see our wonderful Evan?"

I thought about it for alittle a bit and how I was going to phrase it, "The new Kid. His name is Hazel and he can see dead people but no one believes him. He like you in ways, Eric."He gave a nod and turned toward the meal line.

"So which one is he?" he questioned.

"He's the one with the gorgeous red hair."

"Gorgeous? Hold on! You're talking! I told you, you would have a sexy voice."

I let out another laugh."Yeah you did," I laughed again, "and yes gorgeous, with amazing icy blues to match." I let out a sigh and looked down at the table.

"Aw. Little Evan has acrush! He's sure to fall for you with a voice like yours and-"Eric stopped abruptly and looked at the person standing over the table.

"Can I sit here?" Hazel asked gesturing to the chair that was next to me. No one ever wanted to sit next to me. It wasn't a problem really. The only person I ever wanted to sit next to while I was alive was Eric.

We gave a nod and he pulled out the chair. A couple of seconds later Spencer and Gabriel came and sat down at the table.

"Hey, Eric! Who's the new kid?" Gabriel asked taking in Hazel's presence at the table.

"Hmmm?" Eric looked up from his tray and straight at Gabriel, and then turned his gaze to Hazel. "Why hello there!" Eric said sticking his hand out to Hazel as if he didn't know he was sitting there. Hazel shook his hand and gave out a slight giggle. I knew then that they were going to get along fine.

"So kid," Spencer spoke after Hazel had introduced himself to everyone, "What ya here for?"

"Um....Well... I can see dead people."

"That's so cool!" Eric exclaimed from his place next to him. "I can hear radio stations! And dead people as of recently...." He gave a grin looking at me.

"Who the hell are you looking at Eric?" Gabriel asked, noticing that Eric was grinning off to nowhere.

"Oh...no one..."

Another boy came running up to the table and took a seat next to Gabriel. He was about 5'8" and had messy brown hair that fell in front of his eyes. His eyes were muddy brown color and gave the impression that he was still half asleep. He had freckles across the bridge of his nose. The whole look made him look a lot younger than he actually was. He took one look at Hazel and said in his crazy voice of his, "Whoooo ARE youuuuu??" Eric broke out into laughter and hit his head against the table. While Spence and Gabriel just gave the boy a look and rolled their eyes.

"I'm Hazel."

"Aw!!!! What an awesome name! I'm Skyler! Your sooo pretty and your hair is so unique and pretty and-"

"Shut up" Spencer growled at him while hunched over his meal.

"So why are you guys all hear?" Hazel asked. I could tell he didn't want to seem rude but he was truly curious.

"OHH!!!! Me first!" Eric jumped out of his seat with his hand raised.

"You don't have to raise you hand, idiot. Classes haven't started yet." Gabriel said rolling his eyes at Eric's child like actions.

Eric stuck his tongue out at Gabriel and started his story. "I was 13 and I was sitting out side on my laptop. I didn't have many friends and the only thing that I did to bring happiness into my life was writing stories." His voice was quiet and he had a big grin on his face. His eyes took on a glassy look to them as he became trapped in his memories. "So I was sitting outside writing one of my stories and out of no where the heavens open up and down comes the rain. It destroyed my computer and with it my life. It was so angry. I was so alone. I was so....possessed. I ran into my garage and grabbed a metal rod. I stood outside for a couple a minutes waiting to get hit. Just as I was about to give up it came. The lightening bolt I was waiting for." He paused. His smile was gone, but he still had that far away look in his eyes.

"I woke up in the hospital. I was alone. My parents weren't there and I couldn't see anyone in the halls. Despite the fact that I was alone I could hear voices. It wasn't like thoughts it was like singing. Then I heard them announce the radio station name. That's when I figured I could hear those kinds of things. I mentioned something to my mother and she said I was just causing trouble. I kept insisting that I heard them and then I got sent here." His smile came back and his eyes lost their glassy look. "That's when I met Evan and the guys."

I gave a slight laugh. Eric was always happy that he pulled that stupid stunt. He said that having friends made up for the fact that his head was like a radio. I heard a large intake of breath and I knew Skyler was about to tell his story.

"I wasn't the happiest camper." Skyler began. Every time he told his story he had the biggest grin plastered to his face, and all through it his smile never dims or falters. "I liked to get away from things. Just take my music and sit someplace quiet to think things through. My family had just recently moved and I had found a lake in the woods by the park across the street from my house. I had only a few friends once school started and I only took one to the lake. Her name was Heather but that's not really important," He stopped to give a giggle and continued story telling.

"I had separated myself from my friends that summer and became distant from the world. I was sitting by the lake one day when I ripped out my earphones, took my phone from my pocket and dove in. I was under for a long time. I was on the swim team before I moved and it helped my hold my breath longer. When I started to feel the ache for air Iignored it and started to dive further into the lake. I remember blacking out to a nice soft floating feeling.

Like Eric I woke up in ahospital. It was about a month after my little under water field trip. I always felt giddy and happy. I found that a lot of my old friend kept telling me to'shut up' or 'go the fuck away'. I was to annoying for them. My parents took me to the hospital once they realized the only person I hung out with was my little sister.

The doctors said that it was just some brain damage from lack of oxygen. I started to feel alone and more like myself as time went on. I started to cut. It made me feel something. Iwasn't ever sure what it was, I'm still not sure, but it was something. One of my last memories of my family was my mom and dad walking in on me while I was in the bathroom. I had sliced my arms open and I had my hands clasped together behind my back. I stood there with a huge smile on my face. I saw as my parents looked to the floor where there was a huge puddle of blood forming. I started to feel weak and I dropped the knife that I was hold and fell on the floor. Iheard my mom scream and even as everything was blacking out I still was smiling. Next time I woke up I was here."

I looked over at him and like all the other times he still had that smile on his face. It some how got bigger when a fly landed on his nose. His eyes went cross eyed as he looked at it. "Now, Whoooo ARE youuuuu?" His voice got higher when he replied, "I'm Mr. Fly! And whooo might youuuuu be?" He couldn't stop the giggles and it caused his body to shake sending the fly off. Skyler stood up in a panic and ran after the fly shouting, "Come back, Mr. Fly!" He ended up running into the door before standing up again and running out it.

"He's a cute boy," Hazel said with a smile on his lips. It wasn't a mocking smile it was a small gentle caring smile and it reflected the emotions in his eyes. I gave a slight nod even though he would be the only one that could see it. Eric was playing with his food and trying to make a volcano out of the oatmeal. Spencer and Gabriel had removed themselves from the table to "talk" to some other patients. Ifigured that Hazel would figure out why they were in the nut house sooner or later.

They were both escorted back to our table after being warned by some nurses. They both seemed to be in ahappier mood than before so I could only guess they got some information about Hazel. They were never good with asking the person themselves and it was just easier to beat it out of someone else.

"So Hazel," Spencer began. Spencer was always doing the talking He had the brains and Gabriel had the brawn. "We hear that you have Evan's old room."

"mmHmmm." Was Hazel's answer for he was trying to eat the paste that the kitchen calls oatmeal.

"So what's it like?" He continued.

"Like every other room. 4walls and a door." He gave a shrug

"Are they padded? Like is it a padded room. I mean Evan seemed to have about 5 more screws looses than the rest of us. Then he dies and they just so happen to put a kid who claims to see dead people in the same room, which doesn't help support that it isn't padded."

"No. It's not padded. It's like every other room I've stayed in. I didn't claim that I could see dead people. I said that I could. End of story. He's here by the way. Evan's sitting next to Eric." I could hear him trying to keep the edge out of his voice. He was just called crazy. If I was called crazy I would flip- Oh wait, Spencer did just call me crazy. He said I was the craziest in this crazy house. I couldn't help but glare at him. "And by the looks of him he's not happy with what you said."

I saw Gabriel's and Spencer's eyes widen only slightly before Eric nodded his head. "Yup, he's here." I knew they talked about me behind my back but now that I was gone I could catch them in the act. I felt the need for revenge so I slid under the table. I was greeted by everyone's shoes. I was happy as fuck to see that Spencer and Gabriel had on shoes with laces.

I had been practicing my ghostly skills the night before and I had come across a new trick that I could do. The way I came across it was when I was walking towards the nurses station I was thinking about Casper the Friendly Ghost, and how he could touch things but walk through other things. Not everything he touched belonged to him so Ipracticed all night long and found that I could touch things that didn't belong to me for a short amount of time. Sure I had to practice on the nurses, but they had it coming to them after all of those years of treating me like they were better.

In matter of a few seconds Ihad managed to tie their shoe laces together, so when they stood up they would trip, falling face first onto the floor. I sat back in my seat giving Hazel an award winning smile. I turned giving the same to Eric but he didn't seem to notice. I suddenly remembered that I wasn't alive anymore and that Eric couldn't see me. I gave a sigh of annoyance and leaned in whispering my evil deed into his ear. After I finished explaining everything that I thought needed to be explained I sat back in my chair and folded my arms across my chest.

Gabriel and Spencer were in a very heated discussion about only they knew what, when Kevin, a nurse, came to the table. Hazel was taking in his look as he approached and I could tell that Hazel wasn't going to like him. It might have had something to do with Kevin's creeper smile or the fact that his scrubs were a light pink color, but what ever it was it made Hazel's mouth turn into a deep frown that didn't fit his features at all.

"That's Kevin." I explained."He is like the biggest creeper the world has ever known. He likes to molest the patients. He's had his eyes on Eric for a while but when ever he tried anything I would beat him...Don't be in a room alone with him." I turned to look at him to show that I was deadly serious about what I was saying. He gave a nod of understanding and we both turned back to Kevin as he continued his incredibly slow walk toward the table.

Upon reaching it he headed straight for Eric just like I thought. Eric wasn't paying any attention because after giving up on his oatmeal volcano he started working on a beach scene using his milk as the water. Eric was snapped out of his play time, however, when Kevin placed is hand on his shoulder. Eric visibly shuddered at the contact.

"Hey pretty boy," Kevin said in a low creepy voice. "Now that Evan is out of the picture we can have some fun." Eric gave another shudder before I finally stood up. I walked through the chair and stood behind Kevin. In no more than a second Kevin's pants were at his ankles and he fell flat on his ass. "Help me up!" he barked at Gabriel and Spencer. Just as they were about to take a step they fell on their faces, on the ground next to Kevin.

I couldn't help the laughter that came from me at that moment. Everything had played out so perfectly well. I listened to my laugh as Kevin, Gabriel, and Spencer tried to get off the floor. It didn't sound anything like what it used to sound like. It was raspy and weak. It almost sounded breathless.

Just as my laughing fit died down, the bell rang signaling that there were 10 minutes to get to your first class of the day. I looked at Hazel asking the silent question of what class he had as we made our way to the garbage for him to throw out his breakfast. "I have study halls the first whole half of the day." I gave a nod. I wasn't sure where the study halls took place but when I saw Hazel turn around and head back to the table I understood that study halls were in the mess hall.

When the bell rang for class to start 10 minutes later, a nurse started rattling off names. The patients in question would respond with 'here' or raise their hand and mumble something under their breath. When Hazel's name was called I looked over at him and saw that he had his cheek resting on his hand which was propped up on the table. He had a lazy look in his eyes as he slowly raised his hand and putting it down after the teacher recognized his presences. I felt my face heat up as I looked into his lazy icy blues. This boy had no idea what he made me feel. Ever since I met him I had this weird attraction towards him. It was like an invisible force pulling me towards him.

I looked away as he got up from his seat and head towards the nurse in charge. He came back with a small pile of white paper and a pen. After he sat down and got comfortable he wrote down a question and showed me the paper.

'Why were Kevin's scrubs light pink?' I read. I gave a laugh but answered none the less.

"He claims that he accidentally put something red in the dryer while he was washing his clothes. Ithink that's a complete load of bull. The guy probably bought all his scrubs pink and just uses that as an excuse." I rolled my eyes. That man was such ajoke. That was one of the many reasons why I liked to punch him. He took the paper and wrote another question.

'So what's the reason your in here.'

"I told you my story...so Iguess you mean like what's wrong up in my head right?" He gave a slight nod. "I have anger problems. When I get angry enough I have out of body experiences and my body just reacts on its own while I'm sitting somewhere watching it all happen. I don't have control over my body in that state and it's...scary." I gave a sigh and tried to find a different way of explaining it. "It's like watching things...from above...like everything that is going on is just a show or a movie on a screen. After it's over I don't have memories of doing the actions, just memories of watching the event." I looked over at Hazel and saw that he had busied himself with drawing to give the appearance that he was doing something. I watched as he wrote out another question.

'Are you gay?'

I let out a sigh as I felt the blood rush to my face. I knew this question was coming. I wasn't sure how to answer it. If I said yes, then he might be a homophobe and not like me, or he could be gay or at least bi and I might have a shot with him. If I said no, then nothing would change or he could be gay/bi and would think that I was straight and that he doesn't have a chance with me, when he really does.

I took in a deep breath and nodded my head. I wasn't sure if he saw me so I whispered, "Yes."

"That's cool," He replied."So am I." I looked him straight in the eye. He had a kind smile on his face and a very slight blush on his cheeks. I gave him a lopsided grin. He wrote out another question.

'Have you ever had aboyfriend?'

I wasn't sure how to answer this either. Sure I had but I messed it up and it was difficult to explain, so I just decided to tell him the story.

"I did. I've only had on before, but it really didn't count. I never felt like I was in a relationship with him. I had one of my anger moments about a week into going out. I ended up killing one of the doctors. I was put in isolation lock down for a few months. By the time I was let out it didn't feel like we were going out so I had to break up with him. After the break up my self mutilation got worse and Istopped eating. He did similar things but he was bulimic." I let out a sigh. That wasn't the happiest time of my life. "But were both better now...well he is...I'm well...dead...But that doesn't have anything to do with the break up!" I grunted and repeatedly hit myself in the head with my hand muttering, 'Social retard'

To my surprise he let out aslight laugh or was it a giggle. I don't know which one it was but it was adorable. I looked up from my self beating as he slid the paper to where I could read the next question.

'Who was it?'

"It was Eric." I looked down at the table. He had truly loved me and I went and ripped out his heart.

"I'm sorry things didn't work out."

Still looking down I said,"Yeah, me too." Out of the corner of my eye I saw Hazel writing something else down on our conversation paper. After a few seconds of slow uncertain writing he slid the paper towards me. I looked at him before reading the question. The small blush on his cheeks was now darker and he had turned his head away from. This boy was too cute for his own good. I looked down at the paper reading his neat curly writing.

'Would you like one? A boyfriend, that is'

"What are you implying?"

His face grew darker as he mumbled out, "Do you wanna be my boyfriend? I understand if you don't considering we just met yesterday and I you're a ghost and all and-"

I cut him off, "I would love to." He whipped his head around to look at me.

"Really? Like...Really?"

I let out a laugh, "Yeah Hazel, Really." I went to move my hand on top of his but it fell right through. Itried again and the same thing happened. I was starting to get frustrated and fast.

"Hey," I looked up, "don't worry about it." He was giving me the most sincere smile. I let out another sigh and gave a nod.

For the rest of the morning we didn't talk much. Hazel busied himself with drawing little pictures. The only time we spoke was when I would compliment his art work and he would blush and say thanks.

I sat back in my chair and thought about my new boyfriend. There were a bunch of things I didn't know about him and yet I still had this overwhelming feeling that the only reason we had met was for us to be together. It was silly, but for only knowing him for about a day, even less, I felt that I had known him my whole life.

I had this strong attraction towards him, and I couldn't explain it. I wanted to hold his hand in mine. Iwanted our fingers to touch when we passed things to each other. I wanted to feel the simple small brushes of our skin that you feel while walking in the halls. I wanted to feel the touches that you take for granted in your everyday life.

I was pulled from my thoughts by the lunch bell ringing. Not long after kids started to piling into the dinning hall for their second meal of the day. Hazel told me that he was going to get his lunch before the line got to long.

I just sat there as people passed the table. I was watching the door when Eric and Skyler burst through, Eric in laughter and Skyler with a fake pout on his lips. Skyler along with the pout had two black eyes and a bandage over his nose. As they were sitting down I asked Eric, "What's up?"

Through his laughter he replied, "You know how Skyler went after that fly this morning?" He didn't wait for me to answer, "Turns out he fractured his nose when he ran into the door and he chased the poor thing down 3 hallways where It flew out a window. Mr. Brainiac here ran into said window and causing his nose even more damage thus breaking it." I couldn't help but start laughing as well. Skyler was always the comic relief in this place.

"Its not that funny!" Skyler whined shoving Eric a little.

"Yeah it is." Eric and Isaid at the same time, which sent us into another fit of giggles. It was times like this where Eric and I would be falling over each other. I saw roll his eyes and stalk off to retrieve his lunch.

Eric and I sat there for acouple of minutes just laughing and no doubt thinking of similar times. Our laughter was dieing down when Hazel came over and gave us a look of confusion. I just shook my head telling him that he didn't want to know. He simply shrugged his shoulders and dropped into his seat. Only he could make something like sitting down look graceful.

It was 10 minutes into lunch and Spencer and Gabriel had yet to arrive. I turned to ask Eric where they were and saw that he was telling Skyler's nose story to Hazel. I rolled my eyes, waiting till he was finished to ask my question.

"Hey, Eric?"

"mmHmmm?" He looked over in my general direction while still chewing his sloppy Joe sandwich.

"Where's Spencer and Gabriel?"

"They're both in isolation lock don for tricking and beating a nurse for more computer hours." He shook his head. "they have to learn that if they're going to get punished for something they might as well do something that is worth a punishment."

I nodded and turned to Hazel and I saw him quickly look away. I let out a small raspy laugh, causing him to look at me. I reached my hand out to ruffle his hair but my hand passed right through.

I let out a grunt and abruptly stood from my chair, and stomped my way through the table and out of the mess hall. I was so dead tried of being...well...dead.
