Everyone emptied their pockets. I counted out the money. "We have sixty two dollars and eighty cents." I announce as Bob pulls into the gas station. He takes twenty dollars from me for gas.
"We can still go buy the test," Lia says as Bob gets back in the car.
"I guess." I shrug looking at the time. It was 5:30 now.
"Bob make a left up there we'll go in there." Lia says pointing at the supermarkets parking lot. He nods and soon we pull up in front.
We go inside and the door the pharmacy is locked. There's a janitor pushing a broom down the aisle.
"Excuse me." Lia calls out. He looks up. " I needed something in there can you open it up?" She tells him.
He shakes his head no. "Pharmacy don't open until 7." He replies.
"But I need something on a shelf in there!" Lia yells as he comes walking towards us.
"Go up to the, uh. Customer service desk." He tells her. "They keep all that stuff up by the counter there too." He points across the empty store.
"Thanks" I say and Gerard takes my hand in his squeezing it a little. He was nervous I could tell. I know he said he'd be there for me but I couldn't help feeling uneasy...What if he changes his mind... what if he decides that... oooh chocolate... I stop walking a few feet from the counter in front of the candy display.
"Can I have one?" I ask Gerard. He smiles.
"You can have anything you want baby." He says and Lia frowns.
"We don't have enough money!" she says.
"We have forty-two dollars and eighty cents Lia." Gerard says as I look over the rack.. hmm... nuts or no nuts..
"Well how much is the test?" Lia asks. Gerard shrugs. "Do they even have one?" She says loudly.
"I don't know." Gerard shrugs.
"Look this one has caramel!" I exclaim.
"Is that what you want?" Gerard asks me and I nod excitedly.
"Then you can have it." He tells me and I rip the wrapper open.
"How much is it!" Lia yells snatching it from me. "Don't fucking tell her she can have it. We may not have enough money!" she yells. Her voice echoing in the empty store.
"Just cut it out!" Bob yells at both of them "I'll go fucking ask okay." Bob walked away shaking his head a little.
"Can I eat it now." I say nodding towards the opened candy bar in Lia's hand. She frowns and hands it to me. I take a bite and make a face.
"Don't even fucking say it." Lia yells at me.
"Its kinda..." I spit it back into the wrapper. Gerard smiles.
"Caramel-ly?" He laughs.
"Can I get skittles instead?" I ask softly. Lia looks like she's about to kill me.
"What ever you want Elle." He says looking over at Bob.
"Then I'm getting something too!" Lia says folding her arms. We circle around the back of the candy rack to see what else they have.
"They have it!" I hear Bob yell out. "Its uh 18.95!" He yells and Gerard nods. "She says I gotta pay for it here though, honey." Bob says waving his hand a little for me to bring the money over. I had all the money in my pocket still.
"I didn't pick a candy yet!" I say pouting a little.
"Just give it to me." Gerard says and I hand him the wad of bills from my pocket.
Gerard walked over to the counter and handed Bob the money. I grabbed a bag of M&Ms and went up behind him.
The old lady at the counter was looking at them funny as she totaled out the sale and was counting their change.
"You two do know that gay guys can't get pregnant?" She says to them handing Bob the bag.
"What?" He laughs. She looked at him and then at Gerard. "You think we're gay?" He says to her.
She looked a little shocked. "You called him honey- and in public no less." She says making a face. "You must be such a disgrace to your parents.- both of you!" She says shaking her head at them.
"What?!" Bob yelled a little. I smiled. Gerard wrapped his arm around Bob's waist.
"You got a problem with gay people?" Gerard laughs at her.
"Carrying around like that. Its unnatural." She says frowning at them.
"Then you ain't gonna like this!" Gerard says leaning over and kissing Bob. Right on the lips. Hard too! I tried not to laugh.
"I'm calling security!" The woman screeched.
"And tell them what two guys just kissed in the store!" Lia yells out from behind me.
"All of you! OUT!" She screams.
"But I didn't pay for my candy!" I protest.
"OUT!" She screams again. I sigh and toss it on the counter as we walk out.
"Fuck I really wanted that too." I sighed as we got back in the car.
"Well at least we got this." Gerard says holding the bag up. "Do you believe that close-minded bitch!" He says laughing a little.
They all carried on for a while talking about the woman and all this crap. I wasn't listening. I was staring at the bag in Gerard hand. My whole future was at stake...I had to know... Like right now.
"Stop the car Bob!" I yell leaning forward a little.
"What's the matter honey?" He says and Lia frowns again.
"Pull in up here." I say pointing to the White Castles parking lot. Bob shrugs and pulls into the lot.
"Are you hungry now?" Lia snickers. "Got a craving maybe?" She laughs.
"I wanta take this." I say taking the bag form Gerard. "Like right now." I say opening the car door.
"Here?" Gerard's smirks opening his door too.
"I'm sure they have a bathroom inside!" I laugh as we walk in.
And they did... For paying customers only. So Lia bought a soda. The cashier guy made a face but gave her the key to the bathroom anyway. She handed it to me. I unlocked the door and looked inside. There was two stalls and small sink. Lia followed me in, Gerard was behind her. I ripped open the box as Bob walked in. I looked at all of them and shook my head.
"What are you doing in here?" I asked in total disbelief.
"Yeah this is the girls bathroom get out." Lia said pushing Bob and Gerard towards the door.
"You too Lia!" I tell her. She turns to me and makes a face.
"I ain't fucking leaving!" She says loudly.
"I think this is something Elle and I should do alone." Gerard says folding his arms and looking at Lia like she should leave.
"I'm still not leaving." Lia insists putting her hands on her hips.
"Well neither am I." Gerard says. I look over at Bob.
"What so- everyone else can stay but I gotta go?" He says pretending to be hurt. "I'm your husband Elle.. For better or worse remember?"
"Oh fuck you all!" I say going into the stall and locking the door behind me.
And then... and then nothing... I couldn't pee knowing they were all a few feet away waiting.
I open the stall door and stick my head out.
"Well!" Lia yells.
"I can't do this!" I say freaking out a little. "You guys have to get out! I swear to God! I can't pee with you all standing here. Please!" I say pushing them all out of the bathroom... I was shaking a little too...
Well... here goes nothing...
Fuck that's a stupid expression...
