We fell asleep like that. I don’t know how long I was asleep for but it had to be a long time cause when I woke up it was dark out and I was alone. Not all alone in the room but alone in the bed. Gerard must’ve woken up a while ago cause there was a tray from room service across the room. The food on it was long gone. He had dragged the phone cord all the way in the bathroom I guess to not disturb me sleeping. He was talking to someone on it. Mightve been Ray. I could sorta hear him but not really. I was trying to be quiet as I got up and got dressed but I was never good at being quiet. He heard me and peeked his head out and motioned one minute.
I walked over to the window and lit my cigarette up as I waited for him. Scanning my eyes around the cars in the lot.
“Morning baby.” He came over and wrapped his arms around me, kissing my neck slightly.
“Gerard did you get a ticket?” I nodded towards his car. There was something under his windshield wiper. Couldn’t really see what it was from where we were. We were so high up. Fourth floor I think.
“Better not have.” He grumbled pulling away from me. He mumbled something about running down to check. I was gonna tell him don’t worry about it. That I would pay for it but I didn’t. And there was really no reason why he should have gotten a ticket. He wasn’t parked crooked or anything. He was in a legitimate spot!
I went into the bathroom to wash up when he was gone. I was just coming out as he was coming back in the room. He was smiling but he didn’t look happy. It was more of a sarcastic smirk on his face then a smile.
“What?” I asked him looking curiously at the paper in his hand. He began to read outloud from it.
“Dude- I don’t know who the fuck you are but my name is Elle Waller and Ive been sending you-”
“Gerard that’s the letter I wrote to Nicky!” I cried out trying to snatch it from him but he pulled it up swiftly out of my reach.
“Yeah I know.” He said snidely. “Its real nice Elle.” He snickered and I frowned. “I guess he got it.” He added and I scrunched my face in confusion still trying to figure out how it made its way to Gerards windshield.
Gerard finally lowered his arm and showed it to me. Across the bottom in sharpie was written, rather sloppily actually. ‘Mich- Nortons bar 34th and Belmont 9pm-Slim’I glanced over at the clock. It was 8:30.
“No.” Gerard said with out me even asking anything. We then proceeded to argue for
The next 10 minutes. I wanted to talk to Slim. He didn’t want me to and I couldn’t understand why.
“Elle he is going to want his money? Do you have his money. What are you gonna write him a check?!” Gerard finally blurts out and I shook my head no. By no stretch of the imagination could I come up with a 25 million dollar check and he knew that.
“But see Gerard, that’s why we have to settle this.” I point out to him. “Cause even after the cops close the case, hes still gonna want his money.”
“Fuck, you think I don’t know that.” Gerards voice was full of worry now and I frowned at him.
“Well then I don’t know why youre arguing with me. I would think youd want to go and give him the key so we can end this.” I say rather plainly and he smiled at me like I was amusing.
“Oh so you have the key now?” He says in what I assume was an attempt at sarcasm but it really wasn’t. It was at that point that I never told him what happened with Will. I mean in detail that was…
“Yes, actually I do.” I pulled the key out Will gave me and held it up. The light from the lamp on the table reflected off of it and it was gleaming now. Just like the look in my eye I suppose. “Will gave it to me last night.…”
Gerard didn’t say anything. Just took it from me and stared at it for a while.
“You know what this is?” He finally spoke but his voice had a strange undertone to it.
“A key.” I replied and he nodded.
“A key to 25 million dollars Elle.” His voice became higher and I felt myself panic. I knew what he was thinking I could see it in his eye before he even spoke. “You know what kind of life we could have…”
“A cursed one Gerard.” I snapped at him as I snatched it back from him. He somewhat frowned at me as I carried on. “No. FUCK NO. Dirty money.” I grumbled shoving it back into my pocket. “Seriously Gerard you have to be kidding.” I tell him and he shrugged like he wasn’t. “I cant believe youd want to live like that!” I cried out. “Fucking cursed with all that bad karma, not to mention always looking over your shoulder for Slim.” I added and I guess that part he didn’t consider.
“Ok baby.” He tried to calm me but I was so wound up now. I kept giving him dirty looks the whole way to the bar. Even after he apologized a hundred times. Told me he was kidding. Told me it was a stupid idea. I don’t think he feels the same way about karma as I do. I mean I know he doesn’t. I think its just cause he doesn’t understand it like I do. The more I thought about it, the more I realized I had to get rid of this key. This is why my life is so fucked up. 25 million reasons why. My mother gave them to me.
I tried to explain this to Gerard but he didn’t seem to get it, and we were pulling up to the bar now so I didn’t really have time to make him understand. It didn’t matter though. It was all going to be over soon enough. Soon I would be free- that is unless Slim kills us….
