Upon waking the second time from a drug induced sleep. Sanzou found it harder to get his mind to wrap around any thoughts he might have had. He didn’t know what time it was, he didn’t know where he might be or where Hakkai and Gojyo had done to him after their little tussle.
Time trundled on. He chases thoughts this way and that trying to finish them, but they flittered away and he was left grasping for anything to make sense. The sensation of a cool hand on his cheek made him jerk and his mind speed up. He turned his head a bit, not into the affection of whoever was with him, but, to see who else was in the mystery room.
“Sanzou?” Goku’s bright golden eyes were watery and his cheeks were red, as if he had been crying.
“What…where…?”
“We’re at the cottage Hakkai rented for us. He sent a message to the Floating Heads. He said that we’re going to stay here for a while,” Goku explained.
“Oh,” was all he could think up to say at the moment. Feeling stupid, Sanzou tried to sit up, his arms had gone numb and he needed to get feeling into the limbs. A clanking sound was the backdrop to his struggles.
“What the hell…” he craned his neck to try and see behind him.
“Hakkai said you tried to hurt yourself,” Goku said, slightly nervously. Though there was no reason to be since both of Sanzou’s wrists were manacled behind the priest. His feet also were fettered. He lay on a mattress on the stone floor of the room. Through the window, the sun was just beginning to just over the tree line.
“I didn’t try to hurt myself, those bastards….” Sanzou seethed, now feeling more awake, “They’ve been working to Kougaiji,” Sanzou fussed. Goku reached out and helped Sanzou into a sitting position on the bed.
“I know,” he gazed at the floor. Not daring to meet Sanzou’s pissed off gaze.
“You…knew….?”
“It was my idea,” Goku confessed, “I don’t think it’s fair that we Youkai are always judged wrong and…Kougaiji will be a good King, all we have to do is get rid of his Step-mom,” Goku explained.
“What about the sutra? Where is it?” Sanzou asked, clearly agitated.
“It’s safe, Hakkai has it. Kougaiji doesn’t want to bring his Dad back, only his Mom. You can do that, right?” Goku asked.
“I don’t….know,” it was Sanzou’s turn to look away, “I wasn’t trained to be a Sanzou and the night my Master told me he wanted me as his apprentice, he died…”
“What does that mean, exactly?” Goku asked.
“I may fail, if I do it at all,” Sanzou muttered.
“Oh,”
“Yeah…oh…” and he felt as dejected as he looked. Sanzou visibly wilted in front of Sanzou, almost falling onto the floor. Goku steadied him so that he wouldn’t hurt himself from an undue fall.
“What are you going to do?”
“What is there to do, if I had known…I’d never would have continued on with the three of you….”
“But…we didn’t give him the Sutra,” Goku argued.
“Not now, but what about later?” Sanzou turned to glare at Goku.
Bright gold eyes were trained on him, glinting with a light Sanzou didn’t like; “We’ll never hurt you like that,” Goku promised. He latched onto Sanzou, practically holding the Human in his lap. Sanzou squirmed around to get free, but his efforts were useless.
“I have to go now, I’m not supposed to be here. I think Hakkai and Gojyo are punishing you,” Goku whispered into Sanzou’s ear, his breath playing against cool skin. Sanzou shivered from the slight heat.
“As if I care,” he growled angrily.
“We care,” Goku shook his head. Then he levered Sanzou down into a laying position.
“Don’t move around too much, you’ll fall easily,” and with that he was gone.

Sanzou didn’t know how many hours passed before Hakkai made an appearance. He had a tray with him. He smiled as he set it on the floor by the bed.
“How do you feel?” he asked, carting his fingers gently through Sanzou’s hair.
“Tired and sicker than the last time we did this,” Sanzou replied. He didn’t move as Hakkai lent over him. His shoulders were gripped and he was maneuvered into a sitting position.
“Gojyo may join us in a few moments,” Hakkai said as he bent to grab the bowl from the tray. White rice with a bit of soy sauce sprinkled over the top.
“Are you going to fight me about this?” Hakkai’s smile took on an edge Sanzou didn’t like.
“No,” he replied; he tried to keep his tone even.
“Good, open now,” Hakkai seemed more pleased as Sanzou took the small bites Hakkai gave him. He didn’t speak or make any adverse moves during their short time of silence. Gojyo arrived with a glare on his face.
“Goku saw you this morning,” he said to Sanzou.
“It was his decision, I woke up and with the drugs I didn’t know where I was,” Sanzou explained. Hakkai shoved a bit of food into Sanzou’s mouth after this short explanation.
“I see,” Gojyo sighed, “He’s not to see you,”
“Why?” Sanzou asked.
“We haven’t told him what we’re going to do to you,”
“For what?” Sanzou demanded. Hakkai brought up a hand to grab Sanzou’s chin. He shoved another bit of food in easily. Sanzou dropped his gaze. Challenging them while he was fettered was a bad idea.
“It’s for you, mostly, the Monkey doesn’t know about our deal yet,” Gojyo said, more or less to Hakkai.
“I’ll explain it to him after Sanzou is done eating,” Hakkai replied.
“Okay, oh, and Kougaiji and his team are going to come for a visit,” and with that Gojyo left them to their own devices.
Sanzou opened his mouth for another bit of rice. The bowl was done after a few more moments and Hakkai had him drink the glass of water he had also brought along.
“How are your arms? Have they fallen asleep?” Hakkai asked.
“Is there anyway to change the position, they’ve been numb for a while,” Sanzou didn’t look up at Hakkai as he replied, showing a bit of submission to the Youkai.
“I think we can do something about that,” Hakkai said pleasantly. He brought out a ring of gold keys and unlocked on manacle – then he brought Sanzou’s hands to his front and relocked it.
“Give me any trouble and I’ll tie you back in the original position,” Hakkai promised. He gave Sanzou a kiss on the cheek as he gathered up the tray and stood.
“I know when I’m out numbered,” Sanzou muttered. Hakkai chuckled.
“I don’t doubt it,” and then he was gone. Sanzou heard the door to the room lock and he let out a relieved sigh. It was only going to get worse from here. But, maybe with a bit of time to himself he could gather his thoughts.

Sanzou lay on the bed comfortably since his hands were chained in front of him. He had never been one for picking locks and these manacles weren’t anything he had seen before. He couldn’t hear any sounds from the house to his right, however, the open window let plenty of bird calls and other nature sounds into the room.
He needed a cigarette. Badly. However, he wasn’t about to make any sounds or band on the door. At the moment, he needed to make himself as small a target as he could. He needed to find out where Hakkai kept his Sutra and then he needed to escape. It had to be a clean and clear escape with no risks.
He wasn’t about to try and run without a back up plan of any sort. Which meant that he also needed his gun. Damn. The coming days weren’t going to be easy to contend with.
Shadows moved across the bed and wall; Sanzou sat up to try and get a better view outside the barred window. All he could see were the flapping wings of harnessed dragons. Which means only one thing – they had guests.
