Chapter eight – Jealousy

“Reona,” Ashton panted, running up to him. “Sorry, I didn’t even have time to shower. I’m all sweaty,” he apologized, wiping his forehead with a sleeve.

“Uh, it’s okay, I don’t—,” Reona started, but next thing he knew he was backed up against the wall and the jock was kissing him, a rushed, hungry kiss that turned him into a puddle of goo in a matter of seconds. Whether it was because he’d never been kissed before or because Ashton was such a damn good kisser, he just couldn’t help but be overwhelmed every time.

It’d been roughly two weeks since they’d started seeing each other like this, rushing off on every break to meet up below the stairway by the bio lab, where Reona had spent a week’s worth of lunches in hiding. It was the perfect place to meet without being seen, and as far as Reona knew, no one but him and Elliot knew about that place. The secrecy was a sort of unspoken agreement between him and the jock – if word of their hanging out were to get out, there was no telling what would happen, except that their lives would take a one-eighty degrees turn that surely wouldn’t be for the best. Besides, it wasn’t like Reona actually knew what was going on between them.

Ashton’s hands were flat against the wall on either side of his head at first, but eventually dropped to his shoulders and then to his chest while they kissed, and somewhere in the back of his mind Reona wondered if the jock was mistaking him for a girl, because that was as far as they’d always go. His breath was running short and every time they pulled away he’d make these embarrassing little noises he didn’t even know he could make, and by the looks of it, the jock was pretty worked up too.

The first bell rang but he didn’t show any signs of wanting to stop, so Reona pushed against his chest, urging him to.

“Just a bit more,” Ashton whispered, kissing him again.

“I’ve got to get to class,”

“Just skip it,”

“I’ll flunk Algebra if I skip again,”

That seemed to knock some sense into him, because the jock pulled away to stand a good arm’s-length from him, looking pretty awkward now that it was over. Reona kept his eyes down while he fixed his clothes, afraid to see the look on his face.

“Uh, see you later, then. I guess,” Reona started walking away, but Ashton suddenly pulled him close again to kiss him one more time before letting him leave.

Reona dashed all the way to his locker to fetch his textbooks, partly because he didn’t want to get another detention, but mostly because he felt that he’d blow up if he didn’t wear off some of the excitement he had raging inside. He ran up the stairs to his classroom and was panting by the time he got to the table he shared with Elliot. “Hey,”

Elliot lifted his eyes from the book for a moment but didn’t even look at him, and went back to reading without a word. His face was pretty much healed now, but you could still see a faint yellowish spot on his cheekbone.

Reona saw something flash through his mind, something about… last weekend? Shit, I forgot we were supposed to meet! No wonder he’s pissed at me. He bit down on his lip, trying to come up with a way to approach him. “Elliot,” he started, slumping down on the seat beside him, “I’m sorry about last weekend. I forgot,” he admitted, but his friend didn’t even stir. “I really am sorry,”

“It’s okay. You don’t need to show up next weekend either,” Elliot sighed, flipping the book closed.

“Oh, are you busy?”

“No, but you can just ask your boyfriend to teach you,” he spat, flashing him a cold smile. “You thought I wouldn’t find out? You run off on every break, your clothes are a mess when you come back and your lips are so kiss-swollen they’re beginning to bruise. Not to mention that we can’t even have a proper conversation, because you turn off midway,” He got up and started putting his things away. “So I followed you. I saw you,”

“Elliot, it’s not what it looks like,”

“Oh, really? Go ahead and tell me your version, I’m all ears,”

Reona looked around and found that their argument was already turning heads, and they’d soon become gossip fodder. “Can’t we talk about this later?”

Elliot grabbed his arm and dragged him out the classroom, stopping Mae as she was about to get in. “Mae, can you let Miss Howes know I took Reo to the infirmary? Tell her he’s got anemia or something,”

“Uh, sure,” she assented, taking a concerned look at Reona. “Is he okay though?”

“I’m fine, Mae, we’ll be right back,”

They walked down the corridor and snuck inside a random empty classroom. Elliot propped himself on a table and pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose, waiting.

“Well, Ashton said he wanted to hang out, and I just—,”

Elliot laughed out loud at that. “That’s damned hilarious,” he mocked, “Why don’t you just say he wants to screw you?"

”Why are you being like this? You know I’m love with him. Did you expect me to turn him down?”

“Knowing he’d be two-timing you and Candy? Yeah, I did. But if you’re fine with being his mistress, who am I to interfere,”

Reona cringed. Elliot knew him all too well. Getting with Ashton while he was still Candy’s official boyfriend troubled him, not only because it was wrong, but mostly because it didn’t make his standing clear. Just what did he mean to the jock? He knew Ashton couldn’t come out and tell everyone there was something going on between them, but did he even think that way? In the jock’s mind, was there such a thing as them? Truth to be said, he’d never mentioned breaking up with Candy, much less that their hanging out had some deeper meaning. He was throwing himself head-on into something he didn’t quite understand, and by the looks of it, he’d be leaving with nothing more than a broken heart.

“Think about it – how is he any different from Keith? He’s just another horny jock trying to get some,”

“He’s different,” Reona countered.

“Oh, yeah? You can’t even read his mind, how would you know?”

“I’ve been getting more flashes lately. I think I’m getting through—,”

“You’re just fooling yourself!” Elliot shouted, smacking his fist on the table. “Listen to me. You’re sadly mistaken if you think Ashton’s gonna admit he’s gay for you or something of the sort. He’s just toying with you and he’ll toss you aside when he gets bored, just like every girl he dates. The difference is he’ll pretend he doesn’t know you, and it won’t exactly be a lie.” He started to leave, but stopped by the door. “I won’t tell anyone about your little romps with the jock, but don’t expect me to stick out for you two,”

Reona slumped on a table, staring blankly at the blackboard until he couldn’t stand it anymore, and cried.

---

Elliot leaned onto the wall and waited, shadowed by the stairway. It wasn’t long before he heard quick, closing footsteps, and then Ashton himself turned up around the corner, slowing down when he realized that Reona wasn’t the one waiting for him.

The jock zipped up his jacket and walked up to him with that typical aloofness of his, giving him a look from head to toe as if he were sizing him, like before a fight. “So you know about us,”

“Before you ask, Reo didn’t let it out, I just found out by myself. It’s not that hard when you know what you’re looking for,”

Ashton casually braced himself against the wall, beside him. “It’s healed up pretty nicely. Your face, I mean,”

“Just so you know, you might as well kiss your sports scholarship goodbye if the principal hears you’re bashing up students inside the school grounds. Knock me and you’re going down,”

“I’m not gonna bash you,” he promised, “That was a one time thing. I had my reasons,”

“Yeah, jealousy bites, doesn’t it?”

The jock pushed against the wall and faced him, looking dead serious with his arms folded on his chest. “What do you want from me?”

“I want you to stay away from Reo,”

“That’s not up for you to decide. Besides, I didn’t force him into anything,”

“You’re taking advantage of his feelings to have your way with him. That’s like, the lowest of the low,”

“I know that’s what it looks like, but I’m not—,”

“Anyway,” he interrupted, “I had no idea you swung both ways, captain. I bet the hockey team would love to know just how deep your male bonding runs,”

“That sounds like a threat to me. So you’re saying that if I don’t stay away from Reona, you’re going to expose us? And here I thought you were best friends,”

“I just want what’s best for him, and you’re obviously not it,”

“And you are?”

Now wasn’t the time or the place for this – by now Reo should have realized that there was no meeting whatsoever with the counselor, and it wouldn’t be long until he came rushing to the jock. He didn’t want Reo walking in on them, not after all he’d been through for the sake of their friendship, keeping his feelings buried so deep inside that not even his mind-reading powers would be able to dig them up.

“Don’t say I didn’t warn you,”

“Just so you know… I’m serious… about him,”
