Pen walked into the room she shared with Bob, dreading what she was about to do. Exactly how much should she tell him? How much did he need to know?

All of it, said a nasty voice in her head. Despite herself, she quite agreed with it. As much as she dreaded the thought of what Bob would do when he found out everything she’d done behind his back, she dreaded even more the thought of living a life of lies with him.

“Hello, Penelope,” Bob said curtly without turning around. Pen’s heart sunk only slightly. Bob was still sour about earlier. This would make it somewhat easier to tell him her secrets than if he were being his usual loving self. Then again, he was already angry, and it would only escalade from there. Pen realized that there were very few times in her life when she had seen Bob more than just a little annoyed. She took a deep breath.

“Bob…” Pen trailed off, not knowing how to approach the subject. Her brain seemed to be working slower than usual. It was well after midnight, and Pen was exhausted; she just wanted to fall into bed and float away. “Bob, I’m sorry for what happened earlier--”

“Penelope,” he interrupted. “I can’t keep forgiving you when you refuse to tell me what’s going on. I’d like to--”

“I’m going to tell you,” she whispered, staring intently at the floor.

Bob stopped talking and looked at his fiancée. When she didn’t offer anything further, he placed his hand on her shoulder and said, “Yes? I’m listening.”

In one long, tumbling breath, Pen let spill all the secrets she’d been keeping. She told Bob about Demetri and about Mikey, and about starting to drink again. With each word that came out of her mouth, a small weight seemed to lighten up, ever so slightly, so that by the time she was done with all of that, there was only one more little bit of weight hanging on her mind.

“I see,” said Bob slowly, his face unchanged, just as Pen was opening her mouth to tell him the worst part of it all. He took a step back, slowly, and then another. He then backed up to the bed and sat down, staring blankly at a spot on the carpet. Pen’s eyes welled with tears to see him looking so lost and helpless. She blinked, and they went cascading down her cheeks to drip off her chin onto the carpet.

“Robert, I am so sorry,” Pen whispered, walking forward to embrace him, then thinking better of it and staying put. “I don’t--I don’t think I can ever forgive myself,” she continued. “And I don’t expect you to be able to, either.” With that, Pen took Bob’s hand in hers, slid the engagement ring off her left ring-finger, and placed it gently into Bob’s palm, closing his fingers around it carefully. Part of her, she knew, was simply buying him time to put the ring back on her finger and tell her that it still belonged to her, that he still loved her, that they were still getting married…

Bob continued to stare at the floor, still in shock of everything Penelope had just told him. Cheated? She’d cheated on him? With his own cousin? And his best friend? Bob shook his head slightly, not quite certain that this was really happening. He loved Penelope, but…but how could he still trust her after this? How many chances were you supposed to give after someone betrayed you? Seven? Seventy times seven, said a voice in his head. But it seemed like he had given that to her, and tenfold, already. Still, he knew he would never love someone as he loved Penelope. There was no denying it. But would he just be continuing a vicious cycle by forgiving her her shortcomings, yet again? He felt the diamond ring in his hand, the one he had labored over finding for two weeks with Mikey (Bob’s stomach churned angrily to think of Mikey), and he closed his eyes, thinking.

“Penelope,” he said slowly, after a long period of time. He opened his eyes and pinched the engagement ring between his thumb and forefinger, examining it closely. He grabbed her left hand by the wrist, sliding the ring back onto her finger, where it fit perfectly, as it should. “I love you. I will tell you this until you understand, and even after you believe it, I’m going to remind you as often as possible. I will never leave you, Penelope.”

Pen took a rambling breath and held up her hand to silence him. “That’s not all, Bob,” she said. “There’s--there’s one more thing I have to tell you.”

Bob looked at her, ready for anything.

“I can’t have kids, Robert.”

“…What?”

“I can’t get pregnant. I can’t give birth. I can’t give you a family.”

“If that’s true, then I guess you’re all the family I need.”
