Gerard looked absent-mindedly out the window on the way back to Mikey and Alicia's house. He couldn't believe all that had happened in such a short amount of time. He went from an engaged man to the man moving in with his little brother and sister-in-law. He let out a sigh and rested his head against the window. He blinked back fresh tears and closed his eyes. Gee, you're going to get your happy ending, you just wait and see. Mikey's words kept replaying themselves in his head. He shook his head. It's fine. It's all going to be okay. Mikey's words rang through his head. Gerard shook his head again. I've lived with you for 18 years before, I can do it again. More words rang through Gerard's head. He shook his head. Am I really going to be alone for the next 18 years? Gerard blinked back more tears and continued to shake his head.
"No...No, God please no." Gerard whimpered to himself.
"Gerard?" Mikey asked worriedly as he continued to drive.
"No, this isn't happening. God...No." Gerard continued to whimper.
"Gee? What's wrong?" Mikey asked again, slightly slowing the car down. The road was empty except for them, and Mikey was suddenly thankful.
"No, this isn't happening. Make it stop, make it stop!" Gerard whimpered, starting to cry.
Mikey stopped the car. "Make what stop, Gee? What's going on?"
"No!" Gerard let out an agonizing scream. He got out of the car and started to run. He didn't know where he was going, but he just needed to get away. He ran off of the side of the road down a forested path that he and Mikey had gone down on a couple of their days off.
Mikey got out of his car, locked the doors, and pushed it onto one of the sideroads where he knew that it would be safe. He looked up in time to see where Gerard was going, and began to run after him.
"Gerard!" Mikey called as he turned onto one of the shortcuts to get into the forested path. Mikey ran, searching for any signs of his brother. He stopped and listened. He could hear the rustle of leaves, which meant that Gerard was running parallel to him. Mikey ran as well, and just as both he and Gerard came to the clearing, Mikey tackled Gerard and pinned him to the ground.
"Get off of me!" Gerard screamed, fighting to get away from Mikey.
"No! You need to tell me what the fuck is going on!" Mikey yelled back at Gerard.
"Let me go!" Gerard screamed again. He wriggled around under Mikey in an attempt to escape.
"No!" Mikey yelled in response.
"Please, just let me go..." Gerard whimpered, finally giving up the fight.
"Gee-"
"-I'm sorry, just let me go." Gerard begged, beginning to cry. He let his arms fall to his sides as he began to sob. "I promise I'll listen to you, just don't hurt me. Please, don't hurt me." Gerard sobbed, curling himself up into the fetal position.
Mikey helped Gerard and up and supported him as they walked to the car.
The whole way to Mikey's house, Gerard didn't stop crying. Mikey held onto Gerard's hand the whole way home, and when they got back, Gerard looked exhausted. He had dark bags under his eyes, and his eyes were bloodshot, his cheeks red.
Mikey helped to carry Gerard's bags into the house, and then walked Gerard into the bedroom.
"I'm sorry, Mikey."
"For what, Gee?"
"Running off like that."
"It's alright. You're safe here with me, and no one is going to hurt you; I promise." Mikey said, brushing some hair out of Gerard's face.
Gerard nodded, only a couple seconds away from falling asleep. As Gerard shut his eyes, Mikey laid beside him, keeping a protective eye over him.
Mikey couldn't help but wonder about his and Gerard's past. There was something that Gerard had said that struck his heart, and he suddenly felt as through he was being left in the dark. When Gerard had cried "I promise I'll listen to you, just don't hurt me. Please don't hurt me", Mikey couldn't help but wonder. What happened in our past that makes Gerard think that I would ever hurt him?
Little did Mikey know that Gerard was keeping a secret from him that could change their lives, and it would be the beginning of a whole new series of questions and confrontations.
