“Roger, calm down. It’s okay.” Julie says to him.
It really doesn’t seem to help the situation.
“I-It’s…not…okay!” he sobs between taking deep breaths. “Y-You all think I’m…crazy, but…they’re real! The…voices!”
No idea what’s going on? Okay, I’ll fill you in.
Basically, it’s another group session. I know, right? Joy. Anyway, Julie’s asked everyone how they are and no one’s really talking. Then Roger just started crying and holding his head so tightly, I’m scared he’s going to cut his skin. The thing with Roger is, he thinks there’s voices in his head and they told him to cut his arms and shave all his hair off. Everyone else in the group is looking at him intensely, except for Patience. She’s just staring at the wall, seeming completely unmoved by the whole situation.
Julie keeps trying to calm him down. “Roger…Roger, look at me.”
He turns his head sharply and stares at her, still crying.
She continues. “There aren’t any voices, okay? They don’t control you. You’re in control of yourself.”
“No! You don’t understand!” he cries. “They want everyone to turn against me! They want me dead!”
“Roger, don’t say that!” Julie exclaims, putting a hand on his shoulder. “They don’t, okay?”
“Yes, they do!” he yells, flinching away from her hand. “They won’t shut up! They’re so fucking loud! Fuck!”
Julie sighs sadly, looking defeated as she quickly stands up and walks over to the door where she leans out for a moment and returns with a man behind her. Roger sees the man and starts crying even more as he walks over and pulls Roger up by his shoulders and escorts him out of the room. Once the two of them are gone, the rest of us are left in an awkward silence.
Julie takes a deep breath. “Okay, everyone. Sorry about that.”
“Why don’t you believe anything any of us say?” Frank asks, suddenly. All of us stare at Julie.
“We do, Frank, but sometimes, we know that some of the things people tell us aren’t true, but it isn’t their fault. We find it’s in their best interest to tell them the truth other than encouraging something that doesn’t exsist.”
“But what if it does?” Frank continues, swinging his legs and staring at Julie.
“Frank, we all know that the voices Roger thinks he’s hearing aren’t really there. That’s why he’s here. We’re helping him to-”
“That’s not what I was talking about.” Frank interrupts.
Julie gives him a stern look. “Frank, we’ve been through this.”
“Oh, I know.” he smirks. “But you refuse to believe me no matter how much I try and since you guys don’t believe me, then I’m stuck here as long as I’m living and breathing, and I don’t intend on making it pleasant.”
“Shut up, Frank. You‘re being so stupid!” Georgia whispers.
“No.” he says. “I’m sick and tired of this place and everyone having no faith in me and not taking anything I say seriously.”
“We have a great amount of faith in you, Frank.” Julie says.
“Bull. Shit.” Frank replies.
The tension between the two of them is immense. Frank really does commit to getting on their nerves.
“Watch your mouth, Frank.” Julie frowns.
“Watch your back…” he mumbles, but everyone hears it.
“For the last time, Frank, you are not a vampire.” Julie snaps.
Did she just say vampire? Oh, no fucking way. He thinks he’s a vampire? That’s a little creepy. Any possible thoughts I possessed of Frank being a sane person have completely flown out the window. A vampire? That’s ridiculous, stupid, crazy. It’s almost funny even, but I don’t laugh. He’s in a mental clinic, same as all of us. I know I’d be pissed off and embarrassed if someone started laughing at my problems.
“How do you know I’m not?” Frank asks. her
“How do you know you are?”
Frank opens his mouth to say something, but quickly closes it with a guilty look on his face. “There’s no fucking point in even explaining.” he whispers, staring at the floor.
“It’s because you have no way of explaining, Frank. Because it’s not true. Vampires don’t exsist.”
“I DO have a way of explaining!” he hisses, viciously.
“Then explain it.”
“I can’t.”
“Yes, because-”
“I can’t because if I told you, you’d probably put me in a straight jacket!” he hisses again.
Julie sighs and rubs her temples with her fingers. “Frank, don’t talk like that. Please, can we stop this for today?”
Frank sits back in his chair and folds his arms. “Fine. It’s no fucking use anyway.”
Not too long later, group therapy is over. Thank god, too. There was some intense shit going down back there. I found it really fucking weird that Frank actually thought he was a vampire. Like, what happens to you to make you think like that? Really fucking weird. Someone’s been reading too much Twilight, it seems.
I take my usual seat at the back of the game room, observing and thinking. I hardly notice Frank sit down beside me. When I do, I jump a little in my seat. He giggles at me. I give him a nervous smile. I would’ve considered his giggle to be cute if it weren’t for the fact that he thinks he’s a vampire. I was right in the first place. He truly is a real nutcase. Not the type I’m gonna try and make friends with.
“Why are you here?” he asks me.
I’m kinda confused at how he starts a conversation. “Because I like sitting here?”
He giggles again. “No. I mean, why did you get brought here? To the clinic.”
I look away from him. I don’t want to get into this, and I’m sure as hell not talking to him about it. He might want to lick the blood off me the next time I slice my stomach…Awe, crap. Now, I really want to, but not because I want him licking me. Oh, Jesus, god, no.
“I already know why…” he whispers far too close to my ear and I quickly move my seat over a little. He giggles at me. “We’ve never had anyone like you here before.”
What?
He does not know why I’m here. I haven’t told anyone and the only people who should know are the nurses. Frank looks at me with an amused expression on his face. I’m feeling way too weirded out, right now. I stutter the beginning of some sort of sentence. I don’t know what I’m talking about, so in a nervous rush, I blush and look at the floor as I walk out the room toward Mr. Misfit’s office for my own therapy session. I feel Frank’s eyes on me when I walk out the door.
Gah.
*
I feel someone shaking my shoulders gently. I groan and reluctantly open my eyes. It’s Katherine. What the hell?
“Morning, Mikey.” she smiles at me.
“Mmph.” I mumble in response, not in the mood for a delightful conversation this early. “What time is it?”
“It’s nine o clock. Time to get up.”
I release a loud groan in protest, “Noooooooooo.”
“Come on, honey, you need to wake up…you’re brother’s come to see you. So have your parents.”
I suddenly wake up and sit up, scaring Katherine a little with my speed. “Gerard? Here? Seriously?!”
Katherine nods. “Yeah, Mikey. They’re waiting in the visitors room. So, get dressed and come on.”
I do as I’m told immediately and get dressed as quickly as I possibly can. Gerard’s here. Maybe he’ll listen to me and take me home. Oh, that’d be perfect! Katherine leads me down the hall past the cafeteria and the game room until we stop outside the visitors room. She gives me a smile before opening the door. I walk in and see Gerard sitting down with my parents next to him. He looks at me for a moment and I look at him before we both leap up and run to each other at the same time wrapping our arms around each other.
“Gee, I can’t believe you’re here! Oh, my god, it’s been, like, three days and I missed you like fuck!” I exclaim into his shoulder.
“I missed you too. So fucking much.” he replies. “I promised you I’d come visit, didn’t I?”
I just nod and smile into his shoulder. I’m too happy for words. It isn’t until I came here that I realized how much I need my big brother. I fucking missed him.
“Did you get the letter?” he whispered.
I nod again, remembering what it said and I come close to tears. “I’m so fucking sorry.”
I feel him shake his head, as we’re still hugging. “Don’t be, Mikes.”
We finally let go of each other and walk over to the table where my parents are sitting. I hug my mother and my father avoids my eyes. A little hurt, I decide to leave it. I sit down across from my parents and Gerard sits next to me.
“How are yo-” my mother begins, but I stop her.
“Please get me out of here.” I plead.
“Mikes…” Gerard whispers to me, as if to say ‘Don’t start’.
I ignore him. “I don’t belong here!” I whisper, harshly. “This place is full of crazy people! And nurses who never stop smiling. Ever!…Seriously, they’re, like, really fucking creepy!”
“Michael, watch your language.” my father warns me.
“Dad, is it really that big of a deal?” I snap, glaring at him.
“Mikes, calm down.” Gerard says, putting an arm around me.
“No! Gerard, there is a guy in here who thinks there’s voices in his head! Then another dude, Frank, thinks he’s a vampire. A fucking vampire, Gerard! And he keeps smirking at me like he wants to fucking rape me or suck my freaking blood!” I cry.
I see Gerard and my parents share weird facial expressions. I’m hoping this will be enough for them to take me away from this shithole and back home.
“Well?” I ask. “Can I get the fuck out of here or what?”
“Michael, language!” my father hisses.
“Okay, I’m going nuts in here and all you can do is get mad at me for swearing a little? Thanks a heap, Dad.” I sarcastically reply.
Gerard’s grip on me tightens a little. He knows me too well. See, I often display immense amounts of sarcasm when I’m trying to stop myself from crying, which is exactly what I feel like doing. My dad doesn’t even fucking care. I let my head drop a little as I stare at my hands on the table. Gerard moves a little closer to me, holding my skinny frame against his in a one armed hug.
“Mikey, honey, please remember, this is for your own good. We did this for you.” my mother says to me.
“It isn’t for my own good, mom.” I sigh, tears very close to falling. “Ever since you put me in here…I just want to go home. Please?”
“I’m sorry, honey.”
I’m not sad anymore; I’m pissed. “Fine.” I hiss at her. “Just leave me here by myself surrounded by mental people.”
“C’mon, Mikes.” Gerard whispers to me. “Calm down. I want you back home too.”
“So, take me home.” I whimper, looking up at him. “Please, Gee. This place has already scared the shit out of me. I can’t stand it anymore. I’m stopping, I promise! Ask Katherine. I’m eating and everything!”
“What about afterward?” Gerard probes.
I shrug. “I just go back to my room for the night. Can you honestly tell me you’d wanna stick around and make friends with an insane vampire?”
Gerard laughs softly and messes my hair a little before looking serious. “You’re telling me the truth, right Mikey? I trust you.”
I nod my head and lie. “I’m not gonna lie to you, Gerard. You know I can’t get away with that shit.”
…What? The sooner they believe me, the sooner I get out of here.
“That’s what I thought, but then…” Gerard’s voice trails off.
I look away for a moment. I knew the both of us are thinking back to the day when the truth about me came out. Oh, god. I look back at him. “I know, but that’s the last time it’ll happen. I’m better now. I swear.”
He smiles at me. “Promise?”
I smile back. “Promise.”
“Thank you.” he sighs and pulls me into a proper hug. As I hug him back, I feel the guilt tugging at my chest. I just lied to him. Again and again. I’m such a fucking idiot. I almost cry, but I stop myself so no one notices. I’ll save it for later when they’re gone. Oh, shit. They’re gonna have to go soon! No!
Like he can read my thoughts, my father announces. “Sorry, Michael, but we should go.”
I pull away and look Gerard dead in the eye. “ No, don’t! Please don’t leave without taking me with you.” I beg him.
Gerard slowly glances at our parents with a pained look then back at me. “I’m sorry, Mikes…”
I let a sob escape my chest and a tear or two fall down my face. “B-But, I don’t want you to go. Please, Gee, I’ll miss you too much.” He stands up and pulls me up for another hug. I cry into his chest. “I hate it here so much, Gerard. Please take me with you. D-Don’t go!”
“Gerard, come on.” my father orders. Prick.
“I have to go, Mikes. I’m so fucking sorry.” he releases me and wipes the tears that are falling down my face. “Everything’ll be okay. I’ll be back to visit as quickly as I can. I miss you just as much as you miss me, okay?”
I nod my head. “Love you, Gee.”
“Love you too, Mikes.”
He turns and walks with my parents out the door. I feel my face turning red from the tears I’m keeping in despite the fact that I’m already crying. I feel someone tugging at my arm to take me out of the room and I let them take me. My chest feels numb. I just want to go home.
I return to my room where I lay on my bed, cover my face with my pillow and scream and cry until I feel a strange drop in the temperature and an odd breeze, but I hardly notice as I quickly fall asleep.
