For the life of him, Brendon couldn't make himself look to Ryan, or Holly, but Andy's arm, that was wrapped securely around his waist, eased his tension and soothed his nerves. Ever since Gabe had shown up at the door of the warehouse, the two lovers hadn't had a moment alone. The fact that their bodies were so close together was quite a reprieve from all of the new drama.
Ryan, pressed against the opposite window with Holly, who was almost in his lap, refused to let his friend, possibly former friend, see that the silence between them was affecting him any. Yes, they had been through a lot together, and against each other, but Ryan didn't feel like he should have to regret his decision to be with the person he loved. The last words between him and Brendon had been harsh to both, but the damage was done and Ryan knew this wouldn't be an easy fix.
After the attack on Gabe's mansion, Ryan and Holly had taken shelter at her old home, knowing that no one had ever known her address. Both had been relieved when Gabe's voice rang through their minds the day after the attack, which the two were still clueless about the cause of it. They had never been worried about the home, only their friends and the other members of the home still inside the vast mansion when it had been burnt down. After all, homes could be replaced.
Pressed between the two pairs of lovers was Hilary, who had opted for the spot to avoid any potential fights. What she wasn't okay with was the fact that Nate was in the other car, Rayne's car. In the front seat of the car she was currently in were Joe, Patrick, and Claire. The rest of the group, Gabe, Adam, Rayne, Pete, Nate, Micah, and Deacon, were all somehow sandwiched into Rayne's car, while Aubrey's guards were following a safe distance behind in their own ways.
``So, until we get there, we're blind of the setup of this place, right?'' Hilary questioned, pointing out a small fact that had just occurred to her.
Patrick, who was driving, gave a solemn nod as he realized it as well. ``Unfortunately you're right,'' he answered, ``but this is Rayne taking us to a safe place. She's been with us since right after your brother was turned.''
``There's no reason to doubt Rayne,'' Andy said as he softly stroked Brendon's side. ``She's had years to hurt us.''
``You guys haven't had much luck with bugs being planted though,'' Claire pointed out, turning her head to look at Patrick. ``Are you absolutely positive she's safe?''
``I worked for Beckett,'' Brendon spoke up, hating to say the words himself, ``he had no idea that Rayne ever helped anyone. He had no idea she had ties to Pete and he's sat in her office getting information on other vampires. I sat right next to him when he was asking about Pete, telling her he would pay her good for anything she could get on him. Rayne can find out anything about any vampire she wanted, and she never gave him any extra information that could lead to him getting Pete. She protected those she cared about, even I got that after the first few times, but William isn't smart enough to catch on to things like that.''
``He's not the smartest vampire,'' Ryan pitched in after reading the human minds in the car to know that just one vampire saying it wasn't enough. ``He can never tell when he's in a trap because he can't believe that someone would want to harm him. A danger, unless blatantly obvious, has to be pointed out to him by someone he trusts, hence having as many guards as he did. He wasn't stupid enough to think there was no danger for him.''
``They were mainly there for hunters looking to make a quick buck, or say that they killed a strong vampire,'' Brendon explained.
``Which he's not,'' Ryan finished off the sentence, grinning slightly as him and Brendon both shared a small smile together.
``So he honestly had all those vampires believing that he's got a vast amount of power, that doesn't even exist?'' Claire asked softly.
``Not just the Dandies, or his other guards,'' Andy answered, making Brendon and Ryan both look at him since Brendon hadn't expected Andy to speak up, while Ryan was clueless that Andy knew more information. ``He also had some cops and a few other officials eating out of the palm of his hand. Unfortunately we never found out names or positions, other than the ones that were cops, obviously, but we do know he had some pretty good webs weaved. Of course now that we've proved he can be fought against, and drastically wounded, his ties might not be as strong as they used to be.''
``Fear can be a very strong influence though,'' Ryan mumbled as he wrapped his arm more securely around Holly, who was tensing up next to him from her memories of her short time with William Beckett. ``If he can instill fear in them, he can own them.''
When the car in front of them finally came to a stop, Patrick brought his car to a stop and shut off the engine. Once the chance presented itself, the parties in both cars exited as soon as possible and stretched their cramped limbs before they all went to work unloading the trunks of the cars to carry their weapons inside. They had grabbed as many of the weapons from the warehouse, hoping it would be enough, despite the doubts they all refused to voice. Luckily Gabe had managed to get in touch with some of his fighters and guards, so they were on their way with some weapons that were kept in a safe place, away from the mansion.
As for Travis McCoy and his gang, they were on their way as well, with more vampires, and more weapons to aid the friends. As the numbers grew confidence slowly filtered into everyone in the basement of the old building, killing the tensions that had begun to run high. The last thing anyone wanted right now was for an unnecessary fight to break out among everyone.
When he knew no one would be paying attention to him, Gabe made his way over to Rayne and lightly tapped her shoulder. ``I need to talk to you.''
[Author's Note: As promised, loves, since FicWad didn't shut down I have returned! =) I told you I would if they didn't shut down in July. I just wanted to be safe, you know? Well, I'm still posting on fanworks, but I'm also going to post over here. I have this chapter, and then 3 more of The Setting Sun to post for your reading pleasure. And don't forget, reviews are loved and I missed you all!]
