The shadow of your memory is an example of a lesson learned
This broken heart I truly earned.

The shadow of your memory is an example of a lesson learned.
You captured my heart by the hundredth mile.
This broken heart I truly earned.

Now I’m left, ignored and spurned
How could I fall for that charming smile?
The shadow of your memory is an example of a lesson learned.

This chaos of emotion has me concerned.
Quick to love is not my usual style.
This broken heart I truly earned.

Your parting words, “I don’t care!” have left me burned.
I wish your love was more than guile.
The shadow of your memory is an example of a lesson learned.

Your acceptance and love was what I yearned.
You loved only yourself all the while.
This broken heart I truly earned.

Done with me, my heart you returned.
I struggled to choke back bile.
The shadow of your memory is an example of a lesson learned.

Your final announcement? Our love is adjourned!
I’m left feeling molested and defiled.
The shadow of your memory is an example of a lesson learned.
This broken heart I truly earned.
