Chapter Twelve

“I don’t wanna have sex.” Meredith complained, rolling over and hiding underneath the covers.

Gerard shook his head. “Mare, you’re being unreasonable.” He said, sitting up in bed and flipping the page of his sketchpad.

“I’m fat and ugly.” She whined.

He sighed. “No, you’re pregnant and glowing and radiant and beautiful.” He said, leaning over to kiss her. “And I wasn’t asking for sex either. I was asking to make love.”

She let out a snort from underneath. “Well, Little Gee was thinking otherwise.” She giggled.

Gerard rolled his eyes. “You’re not fat or ugly, Meredith. I don’t ever want to hear that again.” He said, his voice solemn and serious.

Rolling over, Meredith laid on her side. “I feel ugly. I can’t even see my feet, and hardly my legs half the time. I can’t even find maternity clothes that fit me well.” She said.

Gerard held her face in between his hands. “Meredith, you’re the mother of my children. So what, you gained a few extra weight. But have you really looked at yourself lately? You’re glowing. You’re absolutely beautiful. Inside of you are our children. You love them and nurture them and they’re going to be just as beautiful as you.” He said, caressing her cheeks.

“Love you, Gee.”

“I love you too, Mare. Now get some sleep, sweetheart.”

The next morning Meredith woke up to find a tray of food at the very end of their bed. She smiled, seeing the pickle and the small cup of syrup along with her waffles and bacon. Lately she had been craving pickles and syrup all the time. She stretched and sat up in their bed. She noticed Gerard standing in the doorway of their bedroom.

“Good morning, sunshine. Like your breakfast?” He smiled, walking over to her.

She smiled at him. “I do, what’s the occasion?” She grinned.

Gerard had slapped a lopsided grin on his face. “The occasion? You’re just going to be a wonderful mother, a beautiful one.” He smiled.

“You’ll be a pretty damn good father too.” She smiled, gesturing to the food. “And you did an amazing job on their room, Gee.” Tears sprang to her eyes. She didn’t deserve him at all, he was too good for her.

And she had fucked up.

Christa was in the kitchen of her and Ray’s home, rinsing their breakfast dishes and putting them in the dishwasher. Ray was on the other side of the room by the window, drinking his coffee and finishing his doughnut while trying to finish writing a song.

“Hey, Ray,”

“Hm?” He said, his nose practically touching the paper on the tabletop.

“What do you think about kids?” She asked casually.

She could hear him shift in his seat and she knew he was staring at her with his big brown eyes. “What?” He asked, almost sounding stupid.

Looking down, Christa flushed. Ever since the band had been aware of Gerard and Meredith’s pregnancy, she had been thinking of a family of their own. Ray was already a great uncle. Her brother had three children, and they loved their Uncle Ray. But who wouldn’t? Ray was so sweet. And they were neck and neck with thirty, wasn’t it time to start a family of their own? Her brother was two years younger than she, he had started his own family years ago.

“Well … when do you think we should start our own family?” She asked quietly.

Ray sat there, his eyes wide and unblinking.

She was beginning to think he was never going to answer her after waiting for six minutes.

“Christa … we just got married and everything …”

“Gerard and Meredith aren’t even married yet.” She retorted.

He sighed. “We’re just releasing an album.” He pointed out.

She sighed. “They’re having twins and the album’s just being released.”

“Their pregnancy wasn’t planned either.” He countered.

When she didn’t answer, Ray went back to writing his song, somewhat hunched over the paper awkwardly.

“I thought you wanted kids.”

Ray glanced over at her, not meeting her eyes. “Christa, it’s a busy time. I understand you want kids, to start our family, but … look at how busy our life is. I’ll be going on tour soon. I can’t leave you here alone being pregnant.” He explained.

“Ray, do you want kids? When you proposed you always said …” She was at a loss for words.

“Christa, don’t start.” Ray sighed, pushing away the papers.

Fuming, Christa slammed down a coffee cup, the sound deafening and echoing. “Raymond Toro Ortiz, do not tell me to not start.” She snarled.

Ray held up his hands. “Come on Christa, it’s too early to fight and ruin this whole day.” He said, his voice softer.

“Whatever.” She mumbled, finishing the rest of the dishes.

“Leesh, is there anymore coffee?” Mikey called, his eyes scanning the laptop screen in front of him as he finished the rest of his giant mug.

Alicia appeared in their guest room, her arms filled with fresh sheets for the bed. “Mikey, our house is a mecca for coffee, of course there’s more coffee. A whole pot full left.” She chastised, stretching the fitted sheet over the full sized bed and dressing it up.

Smiling, Mikey blew his wife a kiss.

“You’ve been on that laptop for two hours already, what are you looking at?” Alicia laughed, spreading the duvet over the flat sheet.

He shrugged. “I have some extra money, I was thinking about buying Gee and Meredith something for the babies.” He explained, cracking his thin back and stretching.

Alicia finished making the bed and went over to the small metal desk underneath the window. “You’re gonna buy them a stroller?” She said, wrinkling her nose.

“Yeah, this one’s on sale and they’ll be here in a few months. Aren’t you throwing the baby shower?” He asked.

“Hm. Speaking of which, I have no idea what I’m going to be doing for that. I don’t even know everyone of Mare’s family and her friends.” She shrugged, resting her head on his shoulder. “I guess I’ll just grab a list and go, like usual.” She smiled.

Mikey continued looking at the computer, at all the baby furniture and travel necessities. “I want a kid.” He said simply.

Alicia laughed. “Really?”

“Yeah,” He said, nodding his head the more he thought about it. “Yeah, why not? We’re not getting any younger. Our niece and nephew are gonna need cousins.” He grinned.

She shook her head. “Oh no, no twins for me. One’s good enough for the first time. My dad taped my birth, my mom screamed like a fucking banshee. One’s good, Mikes.” She laughed, shaking her head again.

“It’s just a thought.” He said, shutting off the computer.

“A good thought. We could try, you know.” She hinted, a small smile playing on her face.

Mikey tackled her onto the bed.
