Nostalgia

"What is that?"

Yuki walked in to find Shuichi sitting on the floor, rifling through a large cardboard box with a silly grin plastered on his face. His enthusiasm was unbridled as he lifted out treasures and set them of the floor beside him. Before Yuki realized it, he found himself smiling over the childish glee on his boyfriend's face.

"My mother wants to turn my old bedroom into a sewing room, so she dropped over some of the things I still had there."

"And you need that junk why, exactly?" Yuki peered at the jumble of junk in the box, obviously the treasures of a young boy.

"This is my childhood, Yuki! My memories!"

"Looks like you had a pretty lame childhood, brat."

Shuichi rolled his eyes in response, ignoring the last statement. His smile grew wider as he reached in and pulled out a clunky plastic box. "Yuki! Look at this! It's my first recorder! This is how it all began..."

"You're attributing your success to an ancient radio?"

"My grandmother gave it to me!" Shuichi's lower lip jutted out slightly as he continued. "My sister and I used to put on shows and sing! I bet there are some tapes in here somewhere..."

Yuki shook his head and walked towards the kitchen, grabbing a beer out of the refrigerator and returning to settle himself on the couch. He was genuinely amused by Shuichi's excitement, part of him feeling the loss of his own childhood. Although he did have some happy memories of his sister and brother, his childhood was nothing to draw a sappy sense of nostalgia. If Shuichi had been so lucky, he would grant him this. He watched Shuichi uncover a tape and almost giddily put it into the antiquated machine. Yuki was amazed to find himself holding his breath - concerned that it wouldn't work, and inconspicuously exhale. After a few seconds of white noise, giggles exploded out of the single speaker, a young girl squealing in delight and then a young boy trying to speak despite his laughter. Moment's later the tape stopped.

"Do we have any batteries?"

Yuki shook his head, watching the pout immediately appear on his lover's face. "Were those the batteries that were already in there?"

Shuichi nodded, flipping the recorder over and extracting the dead cells. Yuki shook his head again in disbelief. "You're lucky they didn't corrode, let alone work longer." Shuichi looked forlornly at the box of junk, having lost his joyous enthusiasm. Yuki felt for him, seeing how excited he had been moments before.

"Come here." Yuki motioned for Shuichi, pulling him down on the couch and kissing him gently. "Stop pouting, you can get some batteries later and you can listen to that stuff to your hearts content."

"Will you listen to it with me?" Yuki almost smiled at the hope he heard in Shuichi's voice, but managed to stifle it.

"Not on your life." Yuki pushed Shuichi down on his back, swiftly pinning him. "I'd rather get the live version."

Shuichi's screams of laughter could be heard on the street, causing passersby to look curiously at the large house and smile as they continued on their way.
