Melody's POV
I stood in the center of the kitchen frozen to my spot. I was too shocked to fully comprehend what had just happened. The smell of burning food assaulting my nostrils quickly brought me back to reality. I removed the now charred chicken nuggets and french fries from the stove and dumped them in the trashcan. I shut the oven off and sighed heavily.
This was my fault. The only thing I seem to be good for anymore is causing trouble. Somehow, in just six months, I had managed to ruin Frank's life, break Mikey's heart, confuse Gerard, lose my parents, and ruin my own life. A sharp kick to my abdomen shook me from my depressing thoughts and I lay a hand over my stomach.
"Mommy is sorry, baby. I'm so sorry your mommy has screwed everything up. I just hope you will one day realize just how much your daddy and I love you."
I heard Mikey's voice gradually rising and I couldn't help but be curious. I tiptoed down the hall and stood just outside of Mikey's bedroom door. I could hear Mikey clearly but only broken sentences from Gerard but it was enough to make my stomach churn.
"Fucking hell, Gerard! What the fuck is wrong with you?!"
"Mikey,....sorry. I don't....."
"I can't fucking believe you! I don't know what the hell you are doing but Frank is going to be so fucking pissed when he finds out!"
"I'm....it's just...."
"Just what, Gerard?!
"I...nothing."
"Goddammit, Gerard! Just go! I can't even fucking look at you right now!"
I couldn't hear what Gerard said next but I heard him move toward the door and I bolted to my room. I felt horrible for what had happened. I don't know why Gerard would just kiss me like that but it made me sick at my stomach to know I was the cause of, yet another, fight between the Way brothers. It seems no matter what I fucking do I fuck up. I suppose I was born a screwup.
I lay on the bed and curled onto my left side, clutching my pillow as the salty tears welled up in my eyes. They spilled over, trailing down my cheeks, dripping off my chin and soaking my pillow. My body shook as the sobs came bubbling out of me.
I was startled when I felt a warm hand on my back. I glanced over my shoulder to see Mikey sitting behind me on the edge of the be. He rubbed my back soothingly as I buried my face into my pillow to hide my shame.
"M-Mikey, I'm sorry. I didn't...I-I don't...."
"Hey, shh, it's okay. This isn't your fault."
"I-I...sorry. I always m-mess everything u-up."
"Mel, don't do this. This isn't your fault. Gerard is an adult and he fucking knows better. Don't blame yourself."
"B-But I-I...."
I felt the bed shift and warm arms wrap around me from behind. Mikey rested his chin on the top of my head and sighed as he gently stroked his fingertips across my abdomen. It wasn't the same as when Frank did it but it was comforting nonetheless.
"I am so sorry for everything you have and are currently going through, Mel. I'm sorry for making things hard for you like I did but I want you to know you are amazing. You are sweet, caring, beautiful, brave, and strong and I am happy to call you my friend."
"Thanks, Mikey. You are an amazing friend. Thank you for everything."
"There is no need to thank me. You just take care of yourself and my future niece."
"Of course. I love this baby more than I have ever loved anyone or anything in my entire life."
"Good."
"Is, um...did Gerard leave?"
"Yeah. I am going to help you with your Science and Literature lessons for today. Gerard will be back tomorrow but he has been warned. If he does or says anything inappropriate to you I want to know, okay?"
"Y-Yeah, okay."
"I mean it, Mel."
"Okay."
"Come on, let's get your lessons over with."
I wiped my tear-stained cheeks on my sleeve and slid out of the bed. I followed Mikey into the living room and took the empty seat next to him on the couch. For the next hour and a half we studied the anatomy of the human body. It was simple and boring but we made it through it.
"Okay, on to Literature. What are you reading this week?"
"Catch-22. I have already started it. I'm suppose to read at least fifty pages today and my essay is due on Friday."
"I guess I will just leave you to read then. If you need anything you know where I am."
"Thanks Mikey."
"Yep."
Mikey wandered into the kitchen and I returned to mine and Frank's room where I settled onto the bed and began reading. I was so immersed in the book I didn't realize how long I had actually been reading until I had finished reading the last page of the book. I glanced at the clock and saw it was five minutes after five which meant I had not moved for the past two and a half hours. I rubbed my tired eyes and yawned.
"Hey Mel."
"Oh hey, Leesh. When did you get here?"
"About forty-five minutes ago but you were reading and I didn't want to disturb you."
"Sorry. It was a good book and I just couldn't put it down."
"Nah, it's okay. Mikey sent me to tell you that dinner is ready."
"Oh thank fuck. I am starving." I groaned and my stomach growled in agreement. Alicia laughed.
"I can tell. Come on, we made chicken alfredo."
"Sounds good."
I followed Alicia to the kitchen where Mikey was setting plates of food on the table.
"You hungry, Mel?" Mikey questioned.
"Starving." Mikey only chuckled in response.
We made small talk as we ate and I was grateful that neither Alicia nor Mikey brought up the situation with Gerard. I could tell from the look on Alicia's face when she looked at me that Mikey had already told her but I didn't mind. I just didn't want to talk about it.
After dinner I helped Alicia wash the dishes and then we migrated to the living room to watch a movie. I must have drifted off to sleep sometime during the movie because the next thing I knew someone was shaking me awake. I cracked my eyes open to see Mikey standing above me, holding my cellphone.
"It's Frank."
I sat up and took the phone from Mikey. Mikey and Alicia went to Mikey's room to give me some privacy while I spoke with Frank.
"Hey Frankie. How was your flight?"
"Hey Mel. It was long and boring but otherwise it was fine. How's everything going over there?"
I sucked my bottom lip between my teeth and gnawed at it nervously. I was debating whether or not I should tell Frank about what had happened with Gerard. In the end I decided against telling him. I didn't want to cause anymore problems between the guys.
"Mel? Are you there?"
"Oh, yeah, sorry."
"Is everything okay?"
"Yeah. Everything is just fine."
"You sure?"
"Yeah. I'm just a little tired."
"Maybe you should get some sleep then."
"Okay, I'll try."
"If you need anything or you can't sleep call me. I don't care what time it is, okay?"
"Okay."
"Goodnight Mel. Give your tummy an extra rub for me."
I smiled to myself before replying.
"I will, Frankie. Don't forget to call me tomorrow so I know you are okay."
"I promise. Goodnight."
"Goodnight, Frankie."
I heard his side disconnect and I hung up as well. I had lied about everything being okay but the last thing I needed right now was more problems and I knew Frank would be more than pissed at Gerard. However, I hadn't lied about being tired.
I returned to our room and changed into a pair of shorts and one of Frank's shirts before settling into the bed. It took much longer than normal for me to fall asleep even though I was exhausted but eventually I fell into a deep slumber.
