The car ride was silent, neither of us could think of anything to say as I drove back. How was I meant to break the news to them? I’m pretty sure Mom’s going to take it badly, but I still don’t know about Gerard. He was three when he left, how much of Dad does he remember? I know that Gerard went to see Dad a few times but I never went. I went once, when I was six, but after that it was just Gerard. Until he was thirteen anyway and said he wanted nothing more to do with the man, why though, I’m not really sure, Mom never liked to talk about it.

“Guys? Mom?” I asked as we walked through the door.

“In the kitchen!” My Mom called as I took Frank’s hand and walked down the hall.

“Sit down.” I said and everyone went quiet, sliding into the seats as me and Frank sat down in front of them and I ran my fingers through my hair nervously.

“Alicia was found in the lake this morning. Dad was found in the lake today though he died a few weeks ago. Both were suicide.” I whispered as Frank rubbed my back.

“Are you okay? The news about Alicia must have hit you hard.” Gerard said softly and I looked up to him, frowning.

“Gerard. Our Dad’s dead. Dead, gone, no longer with a beating heart. Do you not care?” I asked and Gerard’s face hardened.

“That man was not our father.” Gerard spat.

“Gerard, no.” Mom whispered to him and he shook his head, his jaw set.

“You don’t know anything about your Dad, do you Mikey?” Ray asked as Gerard stayed in his seat, his fists clenched as he stared at the table.

“No. I never got to see him, it was just Gerard.” I said and Ray nodded.

“Do you know why it was only Gerard and not you too?” Ray asked softly and the atmosphere tensed as I shook my head.

“Ray, no. He doesn’t need to know about that. It’s that past, none of it matters.” Gerard pleaded, but I had grown curious by now and I wanted to know.

“He used to beat Gerard up, he was his punching bag. Whenever his Dad was drunk he’d sometimes even rape Gee.” Ray said and Gerard looked at the table, his arms wrapped around himself as he shook.

“Is that why Gerard always used to stay at yours for a night or two after and say he got hurt falling out of a tree or playing football?” I asked and Ray nodded as guilt and hate wrenched my gut and tore my insides.

“H-he beat and r-raped Gee?” I said, still waiting for the information to sink in though as my own mother nodded I choked on my own sobs and let hot, salty tears splash down my cheeks.

“I-I’m sorry Mikey, I didn’t want you to find out.” Gee apologised as he cried himself, his own tears falling from his eyes and dragging the liner with them.

“Why didn’t you tell me? Why did it take so many years till you said no?” I questioned and his pained eyes looked up to meet my own.

“He said that he’d keep his hands of you if he could do what he wanted with me. I only stopped because he got a girlfriend and she didn’t like having me over at all.” He whispered as Bob pulled him into his lap, my mother wringing her hands as she looked at us awkwardly.

“Why didn’t you tell me, Mom?” I asked and she winced at the unintentional venom in my voice.
“Gerard didn’t want you to know, he knew that it would completely break your heart. I’m glad the bastards dead.” My mother said defiantly and stood, walking out of the room as my tears subsided.

I heard Gerard sniffle as he rested his head on top of Bobs, sitting on his lap with their arms wrapped round each other.

“Are you okay Gee?” I asked and he nodded solemnly.

“Just bad memories.” He said and I nodded, understanding how hard it must have been for this skeleton to be pulled out of the closet.

“I think we should all go out for a nice pizza, watch horror movies and fall asleep on each other in Gerard’s bedroom, just like the high school days.” Frank suggested and I nodded gratefully, looking round the room as everyone nodded.

“Pizza’s on me.” I said and suddenly everyone became a hell of a lot more enthusiastic. Typical rock band guys.
