“Frank…you have cheese everywhere.” Mikey pointed out and I looked at Frank beside me, who was busy trying to eat his cheese pizza but the cheese had gone all stringy and it was draped all down his chin.
“Not…everywhere.” Frank mumbled, trying to break the string of cheese so he could eat the damn stuff.
“Here.” I said, leaning forward and biting through the string of cheese for him- fed up of seeing him chase the dairy product around his own face.
“Thanks Gee.” Frank said sweetly, taking another bite out of his pizza.
“Your welcome.” I said and Mikey sneezed rather loudly.
“Bless you.” Frank said, straight after he sneezed.
“Thank you.” Mikey said before sneezing again.
“Bless you.” Frankie said and Mikey smiled.
“Thank you.” He said before sneezing ANOTHER time.
“Bless y-“ I cut Frank off.
“Whoa, hold up. This isn’t Loony Tunes you know. You don’t have to say it every time he sneezes.” I said and Frank frowned.
“You do.” He countered and I rolled my eyes.
“No you don’t.” I said and he scoffed.
“Do you even know what it means?” He asked and I shook my head, shrugging.
“When someone sneezes their heart stops, just for a split second, but it still stops. You’re meant to say ‘Bless you’ in hope that their heart will start beating again. It’s meant to show that you love them and need them around.” Frank said and Ray giggled.
“Amen.” Ray said and Frank threw a bit of pizza at him.
“Shut up ‘fro face!” Frank retaliated and Ray made a mock shiver.
“I’m quaking in my boots, the midget might bite my knee caps!” He said in a scared voice which sounded like something of Scooby bloody Doo.
“SHUT UP!” Frank yelled and Ray’s face paled.
“Don’t you DARE pull shit like that again. I’m a Catholic, so damn what!?” He yelled and stormed out.
“I didn’t think it would annoy him that much.” Ray said quietly and I shook my head.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with him.” I said and looked out of the window to where he was running down the road. “ I’ll go check up on him.” I said and walked out, breaking into a run as the warm outside air greeted me.
“FRANK! WAIT UP!” I yelled as the shorter figure in front of me slowed down and turned to face me as I ran full pelt towards him. He was smirking like the bleeding Cheshire cat.
“Hey sweetie.” Frank said as I ran straight into his arms, knocking him back a few steps.
“What was with all that back there, seriously? Ray didn’t mean to offend you, he was just joking around.” I said and Frank’s cheeky smirk grew wider, spreading across the whole of his olive skinned face.
“He didn’t offend me, not at all.” He said, his arms hanging round my neck as he grinned up at me.
“Then why?” I asked and his eyes sparkled with excitement.
“We’re throwing Ray a surprise birthday party next weekend. We want him to think all of us apart from Mikey have gone really annoyed with him. Plus I still feel a bit guilty about the fact we've had sex out of wedlock.” Franks admitted though his smile now matched my own as both our eyes sparkled.
“He won’t suspect a thing. When exactly where you planning on telling me?” I asked and his smile turned to that of a sheepish one.
“Last night….I kind of got side-tracked by you though.” He said quietly and I hugged him tight to me, rocking us slowly.
“I just wanted to let you know how much you mean to me. After all, actions speak louder than words.” I said quietly into his hair as he looped his arms round my waist. We must look pretty strange, just randomly hugging in the middle of the street.
“Not all the time you know. I love you.” He whispered to me and I allowed my smile to reappear on my face.
“I love you too Frankie.” I said and pulled back, taking his hand and walking him back to the pizza place, sliding back into the red leather booth with the rest of the guys.
“Hey guys.” I said as we both sat down and carried on eating the pizza.
“Frank, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to-.” Frank cut Ray off by holding a finger in the air.
“Save it, man.” Frank said and drained the last of his coke.
“What do you want to do for your birthday?” I asked Ray and he shrugged.
“Nothing, really, it’s not exactly important.” Ray mumbled, fidgeting with the rip in his jeans.
“Of course it is, your another year older!” Mikey said, punching him playfully on the arm.
“Can we please just forget about it?” Ray begged, looking uncomfortable beneath our stares. I’d known Ray for long enough to realise that there was something wrong.
“Ray…What’s up, man?” Frank asked, leaning forward slightly to try and read his expression.
“What do you care?” Ray snapped and we all sat back, shocked. Ray never, ever snapped at us or did anything that could be conceived as slightly aggressive towards us.
“Ray, come on. You’re our best friend, tell us.” Mikey encouraged, placing a gentle hand on Ray’s leg.
“Chris is pregnant.” He spat.
“Is that so much of a…bad thing?” Bob asked carefully.
“It’s not mine.” He whispered and I couldn’t hold back a gasp.
“What!?” I asked, confused and horrified that Chris could do such a thing.
“You know we were on a break a few weeks ago?” Ray asked and I vaguely remembered, Chris just wanted some space from Ray which he gave her.
“She slept with someone else didn’t she?” Bob said and Ray nodded, bowing his head as Bob pulled him into a huge hug.
“I can’t believe she’d do that.” Frank said and I shook my head.
“Why would she though? I mean, I of all people know that everyone does something they shouldn’t have done and it hurts the ones they love. I didn’t think that this would be Chris’s mistake though.” I asked, staring and feeling helpless as I watched Ray cuddle into Bob on his lap.
“Don’t worry Ray, Sarah dumped me too. For a woman.” Bob said glumly, he knew she was bisexual, he should really have seen it coming.
“Jeez, this is like heartbreak hotel.” Mikey muttered, putting his head in his hands.
“I’m vibrating!” Ray shrieked and Bob snickered.
“I know. You are sitting on my lap.” Bob giggled as Ray pulled his battered phone out of his pocket and checked the caller ID.
“It’s her. Do you think I should answer it?” He asked nervously.
“It might be important.” Mikey said and Ray bit his lip.
“Hello?” Ray said nervously into the phone and all of us became deathly silent so we could hear what she had to say.
“Put it on speaker phone.” Mikey whispered and Ray nodded, clicking the appropriate button and setting the phone down on the table.
“Hi Ray…I just phoned to let you know that me, Sarah and the baby are leaving for England tonight.” Sarah’s voice came.
“Sarah?” Ray asked and I could practically hear Chris rolling her eyes down the phone.
“I should think you know by now that Sarah left Bob. She left him for me.” Chris said, her voice hurtful and teasing…menacing, to say the least.
“Who’s the father?” Ray asked, anger flickering on his features and present in his voice.
“I have no idea. That two weeks we were apart I went with a lot of guys and a fair few girls. By the way, honey,” She sneered cruelly, “Those two weeks were the best of my life.”
“Did you ever actually love me?” Ray asked, his voice so quiet I wasn’t sure if the microphone would pick him up.
“Ray, you were my first love. That’s all. It was just puppy love.” She said venomously before hanging up.
“Puppy love.” Ray repeated quietly, tears beginning to form in his eyes as he swallowed heavily.
“Hey, don’t cry Ray.” Bob said, pulling the distraught man back into his arms.
“I can’t believe they’d do that to us.” Ray said, his arms wrapped around Bob’s middle as he laid his afro-tastic head on Bob’s shoulder.
“Neither can I.” Bob said, his own voice shaking slightly as the two cried, completely heartbroken. I could tell. They were crying the tears that are silent, the only reason anybody ever cries without a sound is because there is no sound in the Universe that can describe the pain that you feel.
“Come on guys, let’s go home.” I said, taking Frank’s hand in my left and Ray’s in my right, his hand was in Bob’s and Bob’s hand was in Mikey’s as we walked out of the diner and toward the car.
“I’ll drive.” I said, sliding into the driver’s seat with Frank riding shotgun and the other three in the back.
“Do you want to stay at our tonight?” Mikey asked and the two distraught men beside him sniffled.
“Yeah please.” Ray said.
“Me too, thanks for offering.” Bob said, Ray resting his head on Bob’s shoulder as I looked at them through the rear-view mirror.
“It’s no trouble, really.” I reassured before Mikey could.
“We need to go to the store, Gee. Mom asked if we could pick some stuff up for her this morning.” Mikey informed me and I nodded, putting my foot down hard on the accelerator toward the high way which led to the store by us.
