He’d taken the gun away after he’d said the words. Lauren felt the metal barrel leave her side, and sank a little into her seat, trying to take her concentration away from Gerard and place it more firmly on the road. Gerard turned the radio on, catching up on all of the music that he had missed whilst locked behind bars. He hummed and tapped his fingers against his legs, ‘’I have to stop somewhere else first. To get some things,’’ He announced.
‘’Where are we going?’’,
‘’Just turn off before we reach the city, down into the back-suburb,’’ Gerard explained, and Lauren nodded,
‘’Who are we going to see this time?’’,
‘’Some friends of mine,’’ Gerard smiled, ‘’good friends who won’t tell the police if I come and say hello.’’. Lauren frowned a little, wondering if Gerard’s friends would be just like him – which they probably would have to be in order to be ‘friends’ with Gerard.
She did as he told, turning away from the city and down into the back roads that connected to the suburbs. The further she drove into the square-plan roads; she realized that they were suburbs filled with the lower-class, as opposed to the other expensive houses, such as the one that Mikey lived in. Children’s toys littered the pavements, scattered across lawns along with items of clothing, shopping carts and beaten-up cars.
‘’Wait…the house just before the end of the street. Stop in front of it,’’ Gerard instructed, staring over to the house with a small smile. Lauren slowed the car to a stop, cutting the engine and turning to look at Gerard,
‘’Am I coming with you?’’,
‘’Of course you are – do you think I’d leave you out here to run off and go tell the police? Think, Sugar; just because I’m not pointing a gun at ya, doesn’t mean I’ll let you run off on me.’’ Gerard’s lips curled into a sadistic smirk, ‘’we’re partners now. Partners stick together.’’.
‘’Sure, that’s right. But partners also trust each other.’’,
‘’Maybe - It’s only been a day and a half, Honey. Thinks could all change when the sun comes up. Remember that.’’ Gerard’s voice seemed to resonate within Lauren – she inwardly shuddered.
‘’Okay, okay…’’ she opened her car door, and Gerard did the same, getting out and holding out a hand for her to take, she scowled at him, ‘’why?’’ she asked.
‘’You really love questions, don’t ya? Just take my fucking hand; I don’t want them to see you as my hostage. They like to take advantage of damsels in distress, if ya get my meaning.’’ Gerard explained, and Lauren took his hand, it was soft and warm – and not cold and rough like his interior.
The pair walked up to the front door of the house, and Gerard pressed the doorbell with his free hand, and they both waited for the door to open. A few moments later, it did – and a shirtless man with many tattoos across his arms, hands and torso was at the door, his auburn eyes lit up at the sight of Gerard, and he pulled him into a hug, ‘’Fucking about time, Gerard!’’ he laughed, breaking the hug and looking curiously at Lauren, ‘’Who’s the girl?’’ he grinned, his eyes glinting.
‘’My partner, c’mon, Frankie, let us in.’’ Gerard pushed, and Frankie nodded, pushing the door completely open, and leading them into the cluttered living room, shutting the door behind them.
‘’Ray! Get your ass in here!’’ Frankie yelled, ‘’fucking hell, would’ve cleaned up if I knew you were coming, Gee.’’ Frankie laughed, knocking a few adult magazines from the sofa cushions. Lauren caught sight of a pile of white powder and a few bottles of whiskey and vodka, balanced on the coffee table. She had never seen the white substance before, she was sure – she’d never really experimented with drugs in her youth.
Gerard pulled her around to sit on the sofa next to him, just as a man with a curly, fuzzy shock of light brown hair, and a bathrobe wrapped around his tall body, walked into the lounge. ‘’Gerard! How was prison?’’ he laughed, and Gerard scowled,
‘’Fuckin’ terrible - How’ve ya been doing, Ray?’’ Gerard asked.
‘’He’s been doing great.’’ Frankie walked up next to Ray and nudged him, ‘’oh – help yourself to that shit on the coffee table.’’,
‘’I might.’’ Gerard shrugged.
‘’So who’s the broad, Gerard?’’ Ray stared at Lauren curiously; she had to try her hardest not to glare back at him.
‘’She’s his ‘Partner in Crime’ Ray, she helped him break out of prison – didn’t you, darlin’?’’ Frankie giggled. Lauren glanced at Gerard, and he gave a little nod,
‘’Yeah, I broke him out alright.’’ Lauren plastered on a fake smile.
‘’How’d you do that – you suck the warden’s dick or something?’’ Ray grabbed one of the bottles on the coffee table and took a swig,
‘’She did what I told her to. That doesn’t mean she had to fuck her way to get it.’’ Gerard spoke indifferently.
‘’Except fucking you, of course - Haven’t seen a gal like you in a while, darlin’’’ Frankie walked over, running his fingers through Lauren’s soft hair. ‘’Nose is a bit bent, though.’’ He giggled. Lauren was close to punching Frank right in the nose, but Gerard squeezed her hand when she tried to move it.
‘’Stop embarrassing her, Frank.’’ Gerard warned,
‘’Awwww, I’m just playing with her. Ray, gimme that bottle.’’ Frank gestured for Ray to hand him the whiskey bottle. ‘’Now, let’s all have a drink to your freedom, huh? You deserve it, however the fuck you managed to get out.’’ Frank grinned, taking a long gulp of whiskey, and then wiping his mouth after he’d removed the bottle from his lips, and held it out to Lauren.
‘’’I don’t drink.’’ She said quickly,
‘’Come on, darlin’. Loosen up a little.’’ Frank winked,
‘’Lauren, go on.’’ Gerard pressed.
Lauren took the bottle, taking a short sip, then wincing as her throat inflamed as the whiskey made its way down to her empty stomach. She realized just how hungry she was, handing the bottle back to Gerard; ‘’is there anything to eat?’’ she asked, her voice cracked – she cleared her throat, and Ray spoke up;
‘’We have some cereal – that’s about it.’’ He answered.
‘’Can I have some cereal, please?’’,
‘’Sure, c’mon,’’ Ray gestured over to the kitchen, and Lauren followed him into the small, dingy room. Some of the yellowed tiles were cracked, the refrigerator was also yellowed, and making a strange rattling noise. Ray took a bottle of milk from the depths of the fridge, and set it down on the island counter. He grabbed a bowl from the draining board, setting it next to the milk, and pouring some Fruit Loops into the bowl, and pouring the milk. He put the things back, handing Lauren a spoon and wandering back into the lounge, leaving her to quietly eat the cereal.
Gerard tried to comprehend what Frank was trying to say, but the coke he had snorted after Lauren had walked into the kitchen seemed to cloud all reasoning, and just fill him with a burning euphoria. ‘’Gerard, we could help you waste the girl, if that’s what you want to do – then we can all go on the run. Maybe over to California, right? I got shovels in the garage; we could be out here and sailing the golden coast but the next week.’’ He whispered.
‘’No…not yet....’’ Gerard snapped,
‘’Why not – you love her or something? She gonna provide for you and keep you from getting picked up by the cops? I don’t think so, Gerard.’’ Ray continued on from Frank.
‘’We’re the best bet you got to get outta this without getting pinched.’’ Frank smiled, and Gerard wanted to punch that smile right off of his face.
‘’I should be going…’’ Gerard stood shakily, his head spinning. It had been a bad idea, going there. His stuff wasn’t worth this – he doubted that it still remained – Ray or Frank had probably sold it while he was in jail.
‘’No, stay here; we’ll take care of the girl.’’ Frank grinned,
‘’No! Don’t touch her!’’ Gerard suddenly shouted.
Lauren walked back into the lounge, curiously going to see why Gerard was yelling. Frank and Ray were stood in front of him with sly grins on their faces. ‘’What’s going on?’’ Lauren spoke up,
‘’Nothing, darlin’ – we’re just discussing something. Come here and join the conversation, if you want.’’ Frank answered.
‘’We’re going.’’ Gerard walked towards Lauren, finding his balance.
‘’Gerard – you leave and you’re not welcome back here.’’ Ray announced,
‘’Fine with me,’’ Gerard pulled Lauren along, out of the front door and down to the Honda. ‘’Let’s get out of this shit-hole – quickly.’’ He commanded.
‘’Where are we going?’’,
‘’Just turn off before we reach the city, down into the back-suburb,’’ Gerard explained, and Lauren nodded,
