Gerard’s thoughts raced, his mind trying to come to terms with what he had just done. It was not like any other murder that he’d ever committed – and he was sure that he would never feel anything like what he was feeling then for the rest of his life – however long or short that would prove to be. ‘’I’m sorry.’’ He broke the silence that had enveloped the car for the past twenty minutes. They were now in another nameless city, nameless to them – at least. Lauren was confused at his words, trying to think of why he was saying those words to her.
‘’Why are you sorry?’’ she enquired,
‘’I don’t feel like I really need to explain why – the past two days I held you hostage.’’,
‘’You don’t have to be sorry,’’,
‘’Yes I do, I may have killed people, but they were different. They were sub-human at best – you’re not like them at all.’’ His words weren’t murmured – they were loud and clear, and sure.
‘’Thank you…’’ Lauren was the one who murmured, not really knowing how to react.
‘’You can stop once we reach the next alleyway.’’ Gerard guided. Lauren gave him a glance, just to be sure that there was no blood lust dancing in his eyes. But no, they were just filled with a curious observation of the city around them.
Lauren slowed the car, but didn’t kill the engine once they had pulled into the alleyway. Gerard still had his gun, clasped in his spidery pale fingers, which ran up and down the smooth silver-colored barrel that shone in the little sunlight that there was.
‘’Are you going to kill me?’’ she said the words slowly, not wanting to choke on them – to seem weak if those were her last moments.
‘’..No..’’ Gerard didn’t look up from his gun, and then turned it on himself, his breathing visibly became soft and shallow as he lifted the gun, pressing it against his head. Lauren reached forward, grabbing a hold of the gun, but Gerard wouldn’t let go.
‘’Don’t do it.’’ Lauren growled, Gerard watched her sullenly as she tried to yank the gun from his hands. She was vibrant and alive, and Gerard had noticed how colourless he perceived himself. He had no warmth or love, not like the emotions he was sure that she could feel. He wanted to extinguish his life, this dull non-feeling that plagued his mind and body. He was also almost sure that he would be found and taken back to the prison – to be raped and beaten in solitary confinement, maximum security where the screams join a chorus of others who are receiving the same torture.
He couldn’t handle that disgusting slither of hate that he felt towards himself.
‘’Why not? ’’ Gerard managed to wrestle the gun away from her, but didn’t hold it back up to his forehead. He stared at her – wanting to hear why, knowing that what she said could make him change his mind. Hoping that they would.
‘’Because it’s stupid. You’re free now – why blow your brains out in the front passenger seat of my crappy Honda? Why just throw your life away when you only just got it back?’’ she glared at him. Glared – and it almost made him smile at how pissed off she looked.
‘’What else have I got to do? The only reason I got out of jail was to kill that fucker, and he’s dead. He isn’t gonna hurt anyone else – I’m finished.’’ Gerard insisted, ‘’and why would you care if I did this? Why does it mean so much to you?’’ he questioned further.
‘’Because I know what it’s like before you hold the gun to your head – I know what it’s like to wish so hard that you were dead, you stop feeling everything. It’s not worth it. Go, and live, and then you’ve beaten them. You’ve beaten those people in the prison, and you’ve beaten everyone who has ever hurt you.’’ She gripped the steering wheel, waiting for him to get out. ‘’Well? Unless you’re going to kill me – the two days are up. I have someone to see.’’ She smiled a little. If he wanted to, he could still blow a hole in her head – this thought made her turn, not wanting him to see the scared look in her eyes.
‘’Mikey – you’re going to see him?’’ Gerard asked, a little desperately.
‘’Yeah, I’m going to go and check up on him.’’ Lauren nodded,
‘’Tell him I’m sorry and that it wasn’t his fault. Tell him I…care.. I care whether he’s alright or not – it might not have looked like it, but I do. I regret shooting him.’’ his eyes told her that he meant every wod that he said.
‘’I know you are and you do care… I’ll tell him, don’t worry.’’,
‘’I should be going…’’ Gerard opened the car door, and stepped out onto the pavement.
‘’Goodbye, Gerard.’’ Lauren peered up at him, leaning over to his side so she could see him properly.
Goodbye, Lauren.’’ Gerard looked down at the gun in his hands, and then up at Lauren. ‘’I’ll see you around.’’ He smirked, and then strode up the alley.
Lauren waited until he had completely disappeared around the corner before she backed the car out of the alley.

Mikey Way watched with bored hazel eyes as the nurses buzzed around him, adjusting his drips, asking him questions that normally he would’ve asked his patients. He wished that he was at his own practice, but a transfer had proved difficult – so he was bound to his hospital room, thinking of why his brother had decided to shoot him.
He remembered being so scared of telling his mother about what the monster had been like, so he’d kept quiet – hoping that she would figure it out eventually and promise to never take them to his home again. But it was the fact that his mother and the monster had ended their relationship that had spurred on them moving away from the monster.
He was brought up from his thoughts by a visitor – Lauren.
‘’Hey there...’’ she shifted a little uncomfortably, holding a bunch of flowers, ‘’I got these…I always feel like I should bring people flowers when they’re in hospital…’’ she laughed, looking down at the red roses. They were so beautiful; in truth she hadn’t wanted anyone else to buy them – so she decided to get them for Mikey.
‘’They’re nice… and it’s nice to see you, too.’’ He smiled weakly, sitting up in the bed, using his moving arm to push himself up.
‘’Mikey…I have to tell you what happened after we left…’’ Lauren perched on Mikey’s bed, Mikey’s lips pressed into a tight line.
‘’Okay…’’ he spoke after a few moments.
‘’We left your place, and we went to find the man who’d hurt you both when you were younger. We got there, and Gerard killed him – saving another little boy in the process…’’ Lauren trailed off, ‘’and then he let me go after that – but he told me to tell you something..’’ she stopped again as a nurse entered the hospital room.
Mikey frowned at the nurse, and they both waited until she’d checked the machine he was hooked up to, and then bustled back out of the room. And then Lauren started again; ‘’He told me to say that he was sorry, and he cares – even if it doesn’t seem like it now – he does. I could tell how much he meant it, just by looking.’’ She reached forward, placing a hand on Mikey’s good arm, the one that wasn’t bandaged up at the shoulder.
‘’I know.’’ Mikey nodded. ‘’I knew as soon as he did it that he didn’t want to – he has an innumerable amount of demons, and pain – it was the pain that made him do the things that he did. Now that the monster is dead, maybe he won’t have as much pain in him. Maybe,’’ Mikey looked like he had lost himself in the recesses of thought. And then he focused back on Lauren with a smile; ‘’But it’s alright now. It’s going to be okay.’’ He finished. Lauren hoped deep within herself that what he was saying was true.
