Gerard strained to find his gun on the floor – fingers reaching to find the metal body of the weapon, his chest felt like it had cracked in two, but he ignored it – breathing slowly and trying to ignore the pain, pulling the gun underneath his body before Lauren’s parents had a chance to see. He laid his eyes on Lauren’s still body, anger and fear pulsing through his veins at the sight of it. Somewhere in the house, he could also hear Mikey’s voice, yelling out to them. He ignored his brother, wanting to pump as many bullets as he could into the two monster’s skulls. ‘’Motherfuckers…’’ he groaned, clasping his gun underneath him.
‘’Shut up,’’ the monster with the baseball bat hit him in the side. He groaned, but not loud enough for it to be heard above Mikey’s now-louder yelling. His hand still gripping the gun as he tried to plan what to do. He’d have to get the monster with the gun, first.
‘’Just beat him around, I want him to feel some pain,’’ the monster with the gun spoke. Gerard gritted his teeth, watching as the monster held the gun to his side, pointing down to the floor. He raised his arm, aiming and pulling the trigger – and the monster’s head exploded – caving in on itself, its body falling down into a lifeless heap on the floor.
The remaining monster screeched, bat smacking against Gerard’s wrist – making the gun land on the carpet. He yelled out as she dived, grabbing fistfuls of his hair and trying to smack his head against the floor, weighing him down with her heavy body as he flailed against her, trying to throw her off of him. Her hands clasped around his throat, and Gerard choked loudly, still fighting her, trying to move her for a moment so he could reach for the gun – although he couldn’t see it anymore.
He was losing oxygen, his lungs aching to be filled with air – but the monster’s grip prohibited it. All he could do was slowly begin to die as the oxygen left him, his eyes rolling back as he still struggled. Trying to hit the monster’s arms as they squeezed.
His vision started growing blurred, and then the choking stopped. The pressure on his throat was gone – it was like he had been holding his breath under water – and he had just broken up above the water. The monster slumped to the side, its head a burst of gore and bright-red blood on skin, fragments of skull dangling from the top. He pushed the monster away, and got up shakily.
Lauren stumbled a little, clutching Gerard’s gun in her hands, hissing a little with pain as her side continued to bleed. Gerard tried to speak – but he couldn’t, just a wheezing gasp emerged, and his throat flared with pain. Lauren walked shakily to him, her arms wrapping around him, ‘’We need to untie Mikey…’’ she murmured, her head hanging.
‘’..Am…bulance..’’ Gerard forced his speech out.
‘’No…no ambulance. Not until you’re gone..You should leave once we’ve freed Mikey…’’ she gasped, her breath wheezing, also.
‘’Not…Leaving…You…Here…’’ Gerard forced out.
‘’Mikey can look after me. I hate hospitals…’’ they both entered the bedroom as Lauren said the words, and Mikey looked up at them, his eyes wide with shock.
‘’Lauren? You’ve been shot!’’ he struggled again to get out of his binding restraints; Gerard gently lowered Lauren to sit at the end of the bed, un-doing the arm restraints, freeing Mikey. He bolted upwards, his eyes narrowing at Gerard for a few moments, before he moved to wrap his arms around Lauren. He peered down at the wound pulling Lauren’s t-shirt away, grimacing as he did. ‘’It’s not…you’ll be okay…we have to get you to a hospital, now.’’ He pulled her up from the bed, pulling her arm around his shoulder to support her. Mikey looked up at Gerard for a moment,
‘’Just get out of here.’’ He spat, leading Lauren through the house. Gerard watched him with anger rising inside of him, but what could he do? Lauren needed help, and Mikey would get it for her. He’d be there for her more than Gerard could – he was a killer, and Mikey was a normal person.
He waited until they had gone, and climbed inside of his car – staring down at Lauren’s suitcase – which was still on the front passenger’s side floor.
Mikey drove as fast as he could without crashing into another vehicle as he raced towards the hospital – they immediately admitted Lauren into the I.C.U, plugging her into machines and jamming needles into her veins – Mikey cringed as her skin grew paler under the bright white hospital lights.
The guilt he felt for not being able to help her when her parents were attacking her and Gerard was insurmountable. He left Lauren as other doctors worked on her – sitting outside of the room, his head cradled in his hands. After around twenty minutes of thought, he got up, taking his cell phone out and dialing Bob’s number.
A few hours later, the police squad shook hands with Mikey, smiling as they made their silent agreement. They would take care of the mess that was made at Lauren's parent's house; his world was steadily falling back into place. He had even managed to call Donna and arrange for her to take care of Dahlia for an extra week.
He walked into Lauren’s hospital room, stroking her soft hair as she slept. The bullet had been excavated from her rib, and she was stable, sleeping soundlessly as the machines worked strenuously around her, displaying her vital signs to the empty room, and her husband.
