Lauren had almost torn her lip to shreds by the time they neared Newton, her body shaking a little as she tried to banish the fear she felt, but was failing. She felt exhausted, but knew that this had to be done – but Gerard seemed to be calm, smoking quietly, and it encouraged her to take a little control and stop herself from shaking. ‘’There – the little house with the picket fence.’’ She pointed out, her eyes studying the building with fear heavy in them. Gerard kept driving, until they stopped in front of the house, but as they did, Lauren spotted Mikey’s car. ‘’Shit – Mikey’s here…’’ she felt like she was going to throw up, anything to dispel the sudden feeling of betrayal.
He didn’t know what he was doing, but she had told him more times than she cared to remember that they weren’t the type of people to see. She should’ve told him what had happened, but she was still scared, she still remembered everything – and doubted that Mikey could make it go away. He was already there and maybe believed what they said – this thought made her feel worse.
She hadn’t noticed Gerard’s thumb stroking a path across her hand. He knew what she was feeling; he had killed his monster six years before, and now he was helping her do the same. Her lips were against his before she knew what she was doing, craving his closeness in the confines of the car, closing her eyes for a moment as she relaxed against him – he did the same, his fingers tangling into her hair gently, his lips pressing eagerly back against hers. She pulled away after a moment, staring up at him; ‘’Let’s go,’’ she nodded, opening the car door on her side, and got out, searching the darkness for a clue to Mikey’s presence, apart from the car. Gerard went to the trunk of the car, and got his gun out, tucking it into the back of his jeans, stepping up next to Lauren and taking her hand.
‘’I won’t let them hurt you again,’’ he uttered the words, leading her forwards.

Mikey’s eyes opened, the dizziness that overcame him suffocated his senses, had he fallen asleep? He didn’t even remember being tired – the last thing he remembered was drinking a cup of coffee, given to him by Lauren’s mother. He growled with anger, knowing that she’d slipped something in his drink to make him fall asleep. His arms were secured above his head, tied to the bedposts – when he moved his wrists he felt a stinging pain – the ropes were too tight, cutting into the skin.
‘’Let me out of here!’’ he yelled, struggling against the ropes. Lauren’s mother soon appeared,
‘’Ah, you’re awake! And just in time! Your wife and brother are also here..’’ she spoke, then disappeared once again. Mikey groaned loudly, trying to free himself, ignoring the pain.
Lauren’s mother grinned triumphantly as she peered through the net curtain at Lauren and Gerard as they walked to the house, keeping their heads down, hands still clasped together. She lifted the baseball bat from behind the sofa, ‘’Get the gun,’’ she hissed to her husband, waiting for the door to cave in, or for a knock to sound. She doubted that Lauren would be compelled to knock on the door, but was anticipating any sort of outcome.

Gerard wasn’t afraid, as far as he was concerned, her parents probably couldn’t defend themselves, at least not as well as he could defend himself – and Lauren. Gerard held his gun steady, taking the safety off, gently guiding Lauren behind himself, and aiming a kick at the door – it jammed out of the doorway, shaking as it opened, revealing Lauren’s mother – just as she flew out – using the top of the baseball bat like a battering ram – administering a crushing blow to Gerard’s chest – forcing him down to the ground.
Lauren almost screamed, grabbing ahold of the bat as her mother reared it to administer another hit – trying to tackle the heavy woman to the ground – but she was much lighter, and wasn’t as strong. She wouldn’t let go of the bat, though, even when her mother kicked and punched out – Lauren gritted her teeth, punching and kicking back furiously.
The gun shot came before the pain. She hadn’t expected it, her eyes widening as her body registered the shot, her legs giving way as she sank to the carpet, clutching her side and beginning to scream as she felt the blood pouring out of the wound. She could see Gerard through her tears, trying to move – reaching for her weakly as he moved a little. Her breath slowed a little as her two parents clustered around her – her mother aiming blows with the baseball bat, laughing gleefully as she did. ‘’This is what whores get. This is what you deserve!’’ she yelled above Lauren’s screams.
‘’No…’’ she gasped, stopping screaming, ‘’Gerard…’’ she groaned, staring over at him as her body went limp as she lost consciousness, and her parents walked to him, laughing cruelly.
