Lauren’s mother grinned after Mikey put down the phone; ‘’She’s coming home – Lauren is finally coming home…’’ she laughed, her blue-grey eyes glinting with malice. ‘’But she’s bringing that man…Gerard..’’ she spat out the name like it had left a bad taste in her mouth, ‘’little whore, leaving her husband to go out and rut with a killer – we just didn’t raise her like that…’’ she tapped on the arm of the chair that he husband was sitting on, and he looked up, green-brown eyes hardened with no remorse.
‘’We’ll take care of him, and welcome our daughter home. Can you imagine if we got to see our granddaughter? We could teach her so much…’’ he grinned, ‘’teach her not to be a whore and a stupid girl like her mother.’’ He finished, his eyes plastering once more onto the TV screen, ‘’our little lamb is coming home..’’ he murmured before closing his eyes.

Lauren wound a lock of her hair around her fingers, watching the world breeze past the car windows, focusing on what was going on inside her head, rather than outside in the real world. She missed Dahlia; first and foremost, it was a nagging kind of feeling – she couldn’t protect her daughter if she was back in Maryland, and it unnerved her greatly.
Gerard turned to look at her every now and then, but every time he did, he felt her skin cross his fingertips, those little electrical impulses. He didn’t know what to think about her, all he knew was that he wanted her again – maybe after they killed her parents, they could get a hotel, and fuck until the sun came up. Still with the blood of Lauren’s parents on their skin,
‘’What’s wrong?’’ she peered over, snapping out of her mind, looking over at Gerard and the intense look on his face, like he too had drifted away, but was still conscious of the road.
‘’Nothing,’’ he growled through gritted teeth, Lauren’s eyes stared back at him for a moment, and then she turned back to sink in her realm of her mind.
‘’We’ll get there by tonight, I think – it’ll be late, but that doesn’t matter – we’ll be more covered up by the darkness, huh?’’,
‘’Yeah, that’s true,’’ Gerard nodded, they both sat for a little while in silence.
‘’I miss Dali,’’ Lauren spoke up, naming her one problem that encircled her thoughts.
‘’She’s your daughter, I would be surprised if you didn’t.’’ Gerard lit a cigarette as he was driving. Lauren rummaged into her suitcase, taking out her cell phone, scanning through the contacts until she found Donna Way’s number. She selected it, holding it up speak when the ringing stopped;
‘’Hello?’’ Donna spoke,
‘’Hey Donna, it’s Lauren, I was just wondering whether Dahlia was over at your place or not…’’ Lauren explained, getting straight to the point.
‘’Yes, she’s here, would you like to speak to her?’’ Donna asked fondly. Lauren wasn’t the best of friends with her mother-in-law, but she tried.
‘’Yes please,’’ Lauren smiled a little, waiting,
‘’Mommy?’’ Dahlia’s voice filled the phone, and Lauren could tell that she was upset.
‘’Yeah, Honey, I’m here… how are you?’’ she bit her own lip,
‘’I’m okay; grandma just let me watch the Batman show. She says I could be a superhero one day if I want.’’ Dahlia gabbled, her sadness momentarily eclipsed by something that had pleased her.
‘’You can be whatever you want, Dali, I’ve already told you…’’ Lauren closed her eyes for a second, shame coursing through her as she realized that what she had done with Gerard could force Mikey to keep her from seeing her daughter.
‘’When are you coming home?’’,
‘’I’m coming home soon, Dali, I’m coming home and everything is going to go back to normal…But I have to go now…’’ Lauren stopped, trying to stave off the tears in her voice as they spilled down her cheeks.
‘’You have to go? Bye, mommy…’’,
‘’I love you, Dali, goodbye.’’ Lauren put down the phone, and leant forward, cradling her head in her hands as she cried. Gerard reached over from the steering wheel, laying a hand on her back. It felt like a compulsion, like his body had to do it, and after a few moments, Lauren sat up, wiping her eyes impatiently.
‘’She’s gonna be fine,’’ Gerard spoke, taking his hand from her back and placing it back onto the steering wheel.
‘’No she’s not… she can’t understand why her mother and father have started chasing each other, and fighting, and it kills me to think that I might end up like my parents, and never be there for her – to hurt her in some way. If I ever did…I couldn’t handle it..’’,
‘’You’ll never be like them, Lauren. You don’t have the capacity to do the things that they did – you could never be that monstrous…’’ he ran his fingers through his hair with a sigh.
‘’No…I’ll kill myself before that could ever happen....’’ she finished.

Mikey was shrugging off the tired tirade of his body, he’d experienced it before, being a doctor, so he’d become used to having to concentrate for long periods of time when his body’s energy was low. The radio buzzed and wheezed from where it was buried in the dashboard, propelling him forwards. The sky was once again darkening, but before the blue grew into a darker colour, he had reached the back road that pertained to the suburb of Newton, where Lauren’s parents resided.
He slowed his car as it rolled up to the only house with a white picket fence, and a fully-tailored lawn, bordered with flowers. He’d seen a picture of the house using the internet, so he could be sure that Lauren’s parents were inside the home. It looked pleasant enough, he noted, as he walked up to the front door, knocking on its perfect white surface.
An answer came a few moments later, and a woman who he guessed was Lauren’s mother opened the door. Her smile stretched her facial wrinkles; ‘’Michael! How nice to see you!’’ she threw her meaty arms around him, then proceeded to pull him into the house. ‘’Come and meet your father-in-law… You know, I was so upset when we couldn’t come to the wedding – and little Dahlia’s birth! Oh…but I suppose our daughter always did shy away from seeing us....’’ she sighed, tutting a little.
Mikey walked to the man who was sat in the chair, grimacing a bit at the sight of his bloated belly, and glazed eyes. ‘’Hi, I’m Michael Way,’’ he held out his hand, and it was shaken by the man’s heavy paw.
‘’Nice to meet you, take a seat.’’ He grunted, switching the channel on the TV, his eyes returning to their glazed stare.
Mikey didn't feel right being there, the two people were making his skin crawl, and he wanted out. But he had to stay and make sure that Lauren and Gerard did show up, so he tried to settle into the chair, sighing heavily.
