He knows that it wasn't their fault, that they were just two young idiots who got caught in the whirlpool of time and circumstances and had foolishly given in without a fight. The last time they said goodbye to each other, both had gone away thinking of blood and bullets and revenge on the battlefield.
Here they stood now, on that battlefield in their minds from so long ago, looking at each other in the eye and wondering through the red mist of exhaustion and rage of the injustice at how things had gone terribly, terribly wrong somewhere and the quiet desperation of knowing that it was too late to fix anything now.
Both pulled the trigger at the same time, and when they fell it was with the same thought.
"Let's end this right now."
With company, maybe hell wouldn't be so bad after all.
