two weeks later

“Try not to get into a lot of trouble!” My dad called as Dustin and I raced out the front door to his car. Dustin opened the passenger side door for me and waited for me to climb in before shutting the door and running around to the other side. Within seconds he was climbing into the driver’s side.

He turned to me and smiled, “So, you ready to meet my family?” He started the car.

I shrugged, “I guess I have to be.”

He nodded and leaned across the car to kiss me. He put one of his hands on my cheek and held me there for a few seconds after breaking the kiss. I gazed into his eyes, and I promised myself that I would never let anything tear us apart. I loved him, and he loved me.

He smiled and turned his attention back to the car. He put it in drive and backed out of the driveway, before heading down the street toward his house.

It seemed like seconds before we were pulling into his driveway. As he pulled to a stop, I saw a familiar face come out the front door and onto the porch. I had known Dustin’s father was Pete Wentz, but seeing him in person was still exciting.

I climbed out of the car, and headed toward the front porch. Dustin caught up with me just as I was walking up the steps and grabbed my hand. When we reached the top of the stairs, Pete smiled, “You must be Nikki. It’s nice to finally meet you.”

I nodded, “It’s nice to meet you too.”

“So, you’re Gerard’s daughter? You look just like him.” Pete walked to the front door and held it open as we all walked inside.

“Everyone tells me that. I don’t think we look anything alike.” Dustin lead me through the hallway and into the small living room. We sat down on the couch and Pete sat down in the chair across from us.

He laughed, “Well, I think you look exactly like him.”

“Where’s everyone else?” Dustin spoke up.

Pete stood up,” Outside. I was just starting the grill when I heard you guys pull up.”

“Oh.” Dustin stood up, pulling me with him, “We should probably head out there. I know you’re excited to meet everyone else.”

I laughed, “You know me so well.”

I followed Dustin as he lead me out the hallway and into the kitchen, to the back door. He opened the door and I followed him outside. As soon as I was out the door I was bombarded with people. I knew he had a big family, but he never told me how big. There must have been ten people out there.

After the introductions, I learned that there was four children, including Dustin. The oldest was the only girl. Then Dustin, and his two younger brothers. After I had met everyone and most of the talking was finished, Dustin led me to the far end of the back yard where an old swing set was hiding.

We sat down on the swings, and just enjoyed each others presence for a while. We sat like that for a few minutes before Dustin broke the silence, “So, how do you like everyone?”

I laughed, “They’re great. Not as great as you though.”

He smiled and grabbed my hand, intertwining our fingers, “Today was a great day. I’m glad you had fun.”

I nodded, “I always have fun when I’m with you.”

Dustin leaned over and pressed his lips to mine. With my free hand, I entangled my fingers in his hair. “I love you, Dustin.”

Dustin pressed his forehead to mine and smiled, “I love you too.”

I glanced down at the clock as we pulled into my driveway. It was only a little after nine. Everyone else should still be up. I climbed out of the car and was heading toward the front door when Dustin called to me. I turned around to see him backing out of the driveway, “I’ll see you tomorrow. I love you.”

I smiled, “I love you too.” I watched him as he finished backing out of the driveway and then started down the street. When he was out of sight, I walked up the front porch steps and headed into the house. I was expecting someone to be watching TV in the living room, but no one was there.

I shook my head. Maybe they went to bed early. I headed into the kitchen to get a drink, when Frank jumped out from around one of the corners. “What the fuck, Frank! You almost gave me a heart attack!”

Frank just laughed and grabbed my hand. He pulled me through the kitchen and out the back door. When I saw what was waiting in the back yard, my jaw hit the ground. It was the rest of the guys from the band.

My dad walked up to me and smiled, “We’re doing a show in a couple days, and I told the guys they should come down and see you and Danni.”

Mikey walked up to me and wrapped his arms around me, “It’s good to see you again. I’m glad you’re happy and doing good.”

I wrapped my arms around him tightly, “I didn’t tell you this last time, but I love you Uncle Mikey.”

He laughed, “I love you too, Nikki.”

At that moment Ray and Bob walked up to us and wrapped their arms around us. “I couldn’t not be in this hug.” Bob laughed.

After a few awkward moments of hugging, everyone let go and started laughing.

Bob shook his head, “Well, that’s always a nice way to meet someone. It’s nice to have you in the family. You and Danni.” At that moment, Danni walked out the back door.

Frank shook his head, “What took so long? We thought you fell in.”

Danni shook her head, “Cori called. I answered.”

I laughed, “Phone sex again?”

Danni’s jaw hit the ground. As she walked past me, she hit me in the arm. Hard. “That’s not even funny, and you know it! Maybe I was just on the phone having a conversation. But you wouldn’t know what that’s like, you’ve never done that, have you?”

What the hell was her problem? I was just joking. “Fuck you, Danni. I was just trying to be funny. Maybe you should learn to fucking relax.” I shoved past Dad and Frank and opened the front door, “And just for your information, I do have conversations on the phone. My life doesn’t revolve around sex.”

“Sure seems like it. Who’s the one that lost her virginity at fifteen, to a guy that tried to kill her? Not me!”

I wanted to punch her in the face so hard, but instead I stormed inside slamming the door shut behind me. I headed straight to my room and shut the door behind me, locking it.
