· 5 years later *
I awoke to B jumping up and down on my chest begging me to wake up and cook her breakfast. I groaned while rolling over causing her to slide off of me onto the bed next to me. I slowly opened my eyes to look at the clock, 5 A.M. I groaned again and turned to the little five year old staring at me while sporting the famous Way smile.
“B, sweetie. It’s to early for us to be up. How about we go back to sleep for a few more hours?”
In response she furiously shook her head while bouncing up and down on the bed beside me. I stretched out my arm and enclosed it around he small body pulling her down to lie next me.
“Yes B.” I told her “Go back to sleep for a bit longer because Daddy is to tired yet to make breakfast.”
“Okie Daddy.” She said giving in, “But can we have chocolate chip pancakes when we wake up daddy? Please please?”
“Yes B.” I said while pulling her closer, “Now sleep.”
She sighed and cuddled into me and with that we both drifted off to sleep.
Later
I woke up to the smell of food filling my nostrils. I opened my eyes and looked beside me to find the spot that B had been occupying empty. I slipped out of bed and made my way out of the room and down the stairs. As I was walking down I heard giggles coming from the living room. I walked in to see B sitting on the couch watching TV witch my nieces Cherry and Lilly.
“Oh morning Daddy.” B said with a big smile.
“Morning Uncle Gee!” They both yelled together before jumping up and running over to practically tackle me making me stumble back. I hugged them both and looked up to see Sadie standing in the kitchen doorway smiling at me. The girls pulled away and ran back to the couch giggling.
“Well you can tell they’re Frank’s children.” I said walking over to Sadie and giving her a hug and a peck on the cheek.
“Well good morning big brother.” She said with a smile
“Morning Sis.” I said “Smells good whatcha got cookin?”
“Well my little niece said you promised her chocolate chip pancakes so that’s what I’m makin.” She said with a smile.
“You ma’am, are a life saver.” I told her smiling.
She flashed a classic Way smile and shrugged, “Naw, I think Frank is the life saver big brother.”
“Whys that?” I asked
“You do realize that you sir, are out of coffee.” She said
“Oh fuck.” I said along with a facepalm.
“No worries though, Frank is on his way with Starbucks.” She said.
Just then the door burst open revealing Frank. “Da na na na! Frank to the rescue!” He yelled running up to me handling me a cup.
“Black.” He said with a big grin, then he turned to Sadie “And one caramel mocha latte for malady.”
Sadie smiled and gave him a peck on the cheek before turning and making her way back into the kitchen. Something deep inside me ripped at me. Sometimes when I’d see those kinds of things between them, or any of the guys with their significant others made me jealous. I was jealous of them all cause they had their love in their lives. Someone they could show their every compassion they felt for one another. It’s been five years since I lost her and it seemed as everyday that past the whole within my heart would tear just a tiny bit more. The only thing keeping it from completely tearing up was B. Honestly she’s the only reason I’m probably still alive. She gives me a reason to keep on living.
I pulled away from my thoughts and decided to join my sister in the kitchen. I sat down at the table and smiled. Sadie was an amazing cook. Its something she was always passionate about. Hell, she was even better than ma. So needless to say I’ve had the pleasure of eating her cooking for years. Sometimes I pick on her and Frank telling her the other reason Frank fell for her was because of her cooking. Telling her she made her way to his heart through his stomach. Suddenly she spun around like she knew I was watching her.
“What’s on your mind Gee?” She asked
“Lots.” I told her with a frown. I always hated talking about what I was feeling, but she always insisted.
She frowned at my response “Well how’s about talking about it?’ She asked, “It might make you feel better.”
I sighed and looked at her groaning, “How’d I know you’d say that?”
“Because Gee, we’re siblings. We’ve known each other majority of our lives and we known one another quite well.”
“To well to be quite honest.” I said picking on her
“Hey!” She said throwing her spatula that was in her hand at me. I dodged it ad it hit the wall behind me, but ricochet and hit me in the back of the head.
“oof.” I said as she giggled at me “That kinda hurt.” I said defending myself.
“Oh stop you big baby, it was only plastic.” She said smiling.
“Still hurt.” I muttered after picking it up
She rolled her eyes before turning around and picking up the pan to slip the last pancake out of it onto the platter with the others. She brought it over to the table and then walked to the doorway telling the kid and Frank that breakfast was done. Like a heard of animals all three kids and an overly excited Frank ran into the room taking places around the table.
“Frank sweetheart.” Sadie started, “How about you serve the kids so that Gee and I can go have a cigarette together and talk?”
“Sure, I can do that Angel.” He said
“Thanks babe.” She said before bending down and giving him a peck on the cheek.
Together we made our way out of the kitchen and then out the door. Once on the front deck we sat down on the porch swing and each of us pulled out a cigarette lighting them together.
Sadie took a long drag and exhaled before speaking, “Now Gee, please talk to me. I know very damn well there is something bothering you. You can’t keep bottling your emotions up, it’s not good for you.”
I exhaled with a sigh and turned to look at her. She sat there looking at me, eyes filled with concern. For some reason out of both my siblings I was a lot closer with Sadie. I think it was because Sadie pulled at me to talk about things, whereas Mikey kept quiet unless I spoke the first words.
I took a long drag and exhaled myself before starting. “It’s just hard Sadie. Even after five years, it still hurts as much as it did the day it happened.”
“Well of course it is Gee.” She said, “She was the love of your life, your soul mate. I don’t mean to make you feel any worse or anything, but you’ll always feel that way. When she left she left a empty space within you.”
I sat there staring at Sadie in disbelief. What she just said to me was exactly how I felt. Lyn-z did leave an empty space within me. Without her I felt incomplete.
“I understand the hardship your going through Gee, but I know in my heart that she wouldn’t want you to be slowly destroying yourself like this.” Sadie said before finishing her cigarette.
I looked up at the sky letting the words she had just spoke sink into my brain. She was right. Lyn-z wouldn’t want me to be acting like this. It was about time I stepped up and started to be the strong man I was.
“You absolutely right Sadie.” I told her. “Its about time I be strong.”
She smiled “I love you my dearest brother.”
“I love you too Sadie.” I told her before getting up and walking over and hugging her.
“So does this mean we’ll have our old Gee back?” She asked after we pulled apart.
“I can’t say I will be exactly the same.” I told her with a slight frown.
“Well I understand that.” She said, “I didn’t mean the exact same.”
I smiled at her, “Well in that case yes.”
With that we walked back into the house and joined the rest for a nice family breakfast. When we entered the kitchen the table looked like a complete disaster. All the kids, including Frank, were covered in syrup. There were syrup-drenched pancakes all over the place.
“Frank Anthony Iero!” Sadie yelled causing Frank to jump and fall off his chair, which in turn caused the children to freeze in their place.
“Oh.. Hi Hunni.” Frank said looking up at us.
“What on earth happened?” Sadie said with her hands on her hips. Oh boy, she meant business.
“Umm. Well.. We had a little accident.” He said looking up at the kids.
“No way!” B said “Uncle Frankie started a food fight Auntie Sadie.”
“Oh he did, did he?” I asked looking down at Frank.
“Yea Daddy, but I think I won!” She said causing herself and the other two girls to giggle.
Sadie face palmed and shook her head.
“Girls how about you run along upstairs and clean yourselves up.” I said
“Okie Daddy.” B said
“Yes Uncle Gee.” The twins said.
With that the girls jumped down from their chairs and ran out of the kitchen and up the stairs.
“Well I’m glad I saved some pancakes on the counter.” Sadie said, “Now Frank you’re going to clean up the kitchen while Gee and I have our breakfast in the living room.”
“Awe, but Hunni.” He said acting like a little kid.
“No buts Frank. You’ve acted like a little kid and for that you’ll be punished like one.” She said grabbing our plates. “Come on Gee.”
I fallowed her into the living room and we sat down starting to eat. Between bites I spoke up.
”You know Sadie, you must admit it was kinda funny to see them all covered in syrup like that.” I said trying to lighten the mood.
She stopped chewing and looked at me.
“What?” I asked
“Gerard… Do you realize how long it’s going to take for me to get the syrup out of all three of their hairs?” She asked
“Sadie chill.” I said, “It was just harmless fun.”
“I guess your right.” She said
“Alright.” I said, “I guess it’s my turn to ask you what’s wrong with you.”
“Just tired is all.” She said “It’s hard dealing with 2 hyperactive children and a hyperactive husband to whom acts like a child sometimes.”
“Sounds like you need a vacation.” I told her
“That would be nice, but I don’t think I can trust Frank to take care of the twins without causing a huge disaster.” She said laughing.
“How about Frank and I take care of the kids today and you go ahead and make plans with your girlfriends.” I told her smiling.
“That doesn’t sound like a bad idea.” She said after finishing and plate and standing up. I to was finished so I followed her into the kitchen finding that Frank was just finishing up cleaning.
”Hey Frank,
You and I are watching the kids today while Sadie goes out.” I told him
“Alright.” He said walking over to Sadie and hugging her. “I’m sorry Hunni.”
”Its okie.” She said kissing him. “Alright boys, you sure you’ll be okie?”
“We’ll be fine Sis.” I told her “You’ve got nothing to worry about.”
“Alrighty then.” She said “I don’t know when I’ll be back I’ll call ya when I’m on my way.”
“That’s fine Angel.” Frank said “You run along and have fun.”
“Alright. Call me if there’s any problems, okie?” She asked
“Sadie we’ll be fine.” I reassured her.
“If you say so.” She said
With that she kissed Frank and gave me a hug goodbye before leaving. After she left I turned and looked at Frank and smiled. I had a slight feeling today was going to be one hell of a fun day.
