“Go! I can't leave until you guys take Frank out to go get coffee!” I hissed shooing Mikey and Ray out the door.
“Fine were going, but make sure to get that dog!” Mikey whispered before I pushed him and my fro headed friend out the door.
“Gee you coming?” Frank asked and I shook my head.
“I gatta get you a cake man!” I called and he nodded giving me a thumbs up. I watched Bob ruffled Frank's hair and the four of them walked away, off to get coffee.
I darted out of the bus and headed off down the road looking for a pound to find Frank's new dog.
Since his birthday was right around the corner (and by right around the corner I mean a month from now but hey don't judge) we all agreed to get our animal loving friend a pet. We only had a few more places to hit before the tour was over and we all loved the idea of having a dog on the bus. Ray already had the largest stomach in the world so potty breaks (or food breaks for Ray) were not an issue.
But unfortunately, I didn't think this plan through very well. Because within ten minuets or wandering up and down roads I was completely lost. How could such a large town not have a shelter of some kind?
I was tired of walking so I decided to ask someone were the hell to go. But unfortunately the only man I saw looked to be...intoxicated.
“Uh, Sir?” The man stopped and looked at me. “Do you know where I can get a pet for my friend?”
“Ohh, You're lookin' for a bitch are ye?” Ye?
“I guess?”
“Yea I know where ya can get one..I real nice one too, cheap or expensive. Depends on whatcha friend likes?” He slurred nudging me with his elbow and laughing. Odd.
“Where?”
“Right there.” He pointed to a build that looked closed. “Ya gatta go to the back door. Knock real out and say 'I wanna bitch!' that'll get ya one.” He patted my back and staggered off and I would be lying if I said he wasn't drunk beyond words.
I also would be lying if I believe the place he told me was a pet store. The door was locked and the inside was bare and unoccupied. It didn't look safe for children to be in here let alone dogs. But for some reason I followed the mans ordered and went around back and stared at the heavy looking door.
Should I really do this? Am I really going to find a dog in this place?
No...but I guess it wouldn't hurt if-
The door opened cutting off my train of thought and I froze and the man who left the building froze as well.
“You a cop?” His voice was low and rough sounding.
I struggled to find words and I gave up and tried to remember what the man had told me to say.
“I wanna bitch!” I told him and he relaxed a bit nodding to the door.
“Oh, come on in I'll take you to the viewing. It's almost over so you may not get a good pickin'.” Pickin'? Was this a kennel or a prison?
He lead me down a flight of stairs and through a door pointing to a chair. The black was dark and stuffy. I could hardly make out anything only shadows and figures of things and I slowly began to panic.
“Get yourself a chair and relax. By the way, how much money do you have on ya?”
“About three hundred.”
“Three hundred? Ha! You're gonna get a sloppy one.” Sloppy one?
“I think you misunderstood me I was looking for-” I stopped myself when the man gave me a death look and I swallowed hard. “My friend.” I squeaked out.
“Look around, I'm sure you'll find him.” He walked away and I stood there feeling out of place and scared. What was this place? Why were so many people here? Why was it so poorly lite?
I walked back to the door I came in from and I felt a cold hand grasp my shoulder.
“Were are ya goin' pal?” A man breath down my neck making me cringe.
“Just got lost.” I let out a poor excuse for a laugh and walked away from the male. Oh god I was trapped here. Here in this...
“Sold! To the little lady in the red hat!” I hadn't noticed before but there was a stage. And on it stood a man in his mid forties pushing a kid who looked fifteen to a woman who handed him a wad of cash and he smiled and walked off the stage.
Slave auction.
Holy shit. Holy shit. Oh god! What the hell?! This was illegal! Wasn't it? Yea it was! Oh god!
“You folks are gonna like this one.” A man who looked fifty said. He held the long brown hair of a girl who looked no more then ten. “She keeps real quiet and will do anything you ask.”
“M-master please.” She whispered and the owner slapped her.
“Quiet my ass!” A male shouted angry.
“She's just a fucking kid! Send her back to the trainer!” A woman shouted and I cringed in disgust. Was this really happening?
“Come on folks, all I'm asking for is one hundred for the bitch. You know I gatta kill her if she ain't bought, don't make me kill this whore?” He just addressed a child as a whore. Was the world this cruel?
“Seventy five!” A man close to me called and whispered over to his friend. “I can just beat her instead of the others. She's useless...”
“One hundred!” I shouted not knowing what the fuck I was doing. I couldn't let her die, and I sure as hell can't let her get beaten.
“She's not worth it.” The male muttered and I walked up to the stage were the male smirked down at me.
“Come on back, I'll gave ya whatcha need there.” I nodded following the man out back and he dropped the trembling girl to the ground and handed me a file.
“What's this?” I asked looking through it.
“Fake medical record, ID, social security, passport. Everything you need to keep her alive, legally.” He looked through it and I was still in a daze. Did I really just buy a person? “She get's sick easily and get jealous extremely fast.”
“What's her name?”
“I call her Twelve.” The man rubbed the back of his neck looking down at the girl. “Easier to remember for me, you can call her anything you want.”
“What's her real name?”
“I don't remember, E something...Look are you gonna give me the money or do I have to kill this bitch?”
“Master please, I'll get better. I'll do anything you want. You can beat me, rape me, however many times you want and I won't cry or moan. Please I love you!”
“Shut up!” He yelled kicking her until she fell to the ground.
“Hey stop! Here's your money!” I threw him the dollar bill and he took it and shoved it in his pocket.
“She's yours now.” He got into his car and drove off and I knelt down next to the girl and tried to help her but she flinched and screamed when I did.
“Hey relax it's okay! I'm not going to hurt you I promise. Just relax, huh, shit.” She began to cry and I began to panic.
“I-I want my master....” She sniffed and I held onto her despite her cries.
What should I do? Go to the police? Hell no the mafia guys in there will have my head! What can I do?
Ring Ring!
I looked down at the girl who continued to sob then answered my phone covering it up first.
“Hold on, uh, just hold on.” I told the girl before answering the phone. “Hello?”
“Dude, shitty news. Flat tire. We are crashin' in a hotel down the road from were the bus was.”
Shit. I completely about the band.
“Uh Mikey, I have the uh...dog. I need you to leave the key in my hotel door I am almost there. What room am I?”
“Dog...” The girl sniffed and I felt horrible for saying it.
“Room 217 floor three, hurry up with the puppy man!”
“Oh don't be in the room! I don't want to scare her.”
“Good idea. Okay, see you in a bit!” I hung up and shoved my phone back into my pocket before returning to the nameless girl.
“Hey don't cry. Please don't cry. Shh, relax everything will be okay. We'll get you back home.”
“Home is with master, I want my master.” She had stopped crying but she continued to shake. “You are not my master. You are my keeper, my master will come back for me. He needs to.” I sighed feeling nothing but despair for this small child.
“I'm sorry honey but he isn't coming back.”
“He needs me! He loves me! I love him!” She began to cry once more.
What the fuck was I suppose to do? I didn't have a kid, nor did I know how to take care of one. I could barely manage my love life!
“Come here, we need to get you to my place, I promise I won't hurt you okay?” She did nothing so I sighed and knelt down in front of her my back to her. “Get on.” She did nothing at first, just sniff. Then slowly she wrapped her dirty palms arms around my neck and her bare legs around my waist. She was light, like inhumanly light. “Were are your shoes?” I asked her looking down at her black feet.
“Shoes are for people.”
“You are a person though. You belong with people.” She didn't respond to me and I knew this wasn't going to be very good.
I walked in quiet down the nearly empty sidewalks getting occasional glances from people. But what could I do? I had a girl who wore nothing but a oversized T-shirt on my back and if I snuck around I would look like a pedophile.
Somehow I finally managed to find the hotel and I tiptoed in and got in an elevator setting the girl down. I pressed the button for the third floor and once it moved the child screamed and clung to me. Was she scared of the elevator? Oh jeez...
“Relax it isn't going to hurt you.” I patted the girls back and she didn't relax at all until the doors opened and she ran out of the thing. I simply stepped out and grabbed her tiny hand and lead her to my room, sure enough the key was in the door.
I opened it up and motioned for the child to enter. She followed squeezing my hand and watched me close the door and lock it. She let out a small whimper and I looked down at her.
“It's okay, no one is going to hurt you. Trust me nothing is going to happen to you.” I soothed knowing it did nothing for her. I let go of her hand and sat down on the bed resting my head in my hands.
Relax, breath, you can....oh who the fuck was I kiddin?!
“Holy fuck shit I just bought a person...”
