Frank was on edge the entire weekend, every time his parents spoke to him he would flinch and bullshit his way out of conversations. He still hadn’t managed to think of a reasonable way to present his new information to Gerard, so he was going to tell him straight out that he knew; fuck the consequences.

In his head, Frank thought it would all go well; he’d tell Gerard, Gerard would confess and ditch his abusive boyfriend to get better.

Life never goes according to plan, apparently.

In fact, Frank ignored everyone at school to the point where Gerard approached him and asked him if anything was wrong.

“Actually,” Frank mumbled, closing his locker door, “we’re skipping the rest of the day; I need to talk to you. In private,”

Gerard panicked at Frank’s prospect and went to decline, but Frank cut him off, telling him it was important and gave him the puppy eyes that he knows no-one can resist.

Both males were silent on the walk to the local park, each thinking over the possible outcome of this talk in their heads.

Frank jumped the rusting gate and trudged over the soggy wood chips to the swings before digging his packet of skittles out of his backpack and wordlessly offering it to Gerard who was getting comfortable in the swing beside him.

Gerard politely declined and the full force of what he’s about to say hits him square in the face.

“I know…” he whispered, his eyes trained on the ground as he made patterns in the wood with his shoes.

“You know what?” Gerard asked, confused as to why the fuck his best friend would ask him to skip school just to tell him he knows something

“I was at your house Friday night…” he tried again, peering discretely at Gerard from under his bangs.

Gerard gulped; he couldn’t have seen could he? He played it cool and said nonchalantly “I didn’t realise Mikey had anyone over,”

Frank frowned. How can Gerard not get this? “Well, you see… I wasn’t exactly in your house… more like… outside your window?”

“You were spying on me!” Gerard said immediately, pissed at Frank’s behaviour. Sure, he’s always known Frank was no saint; The two of them have had their fair share run ins with the law and he knows for a fact Linda Iero has had way too many police on her doorstep than any mother should have. But spying? Gerard never would have pegged Frank as the type.

“Why didn’t you tell us Gerard, we could have helped you!” Frank cried, looking up at his friend with pleading eyes.

“Because there’s nothing wrong, Frank! He’s doing it because he loves me! He just wants me to be beautiful!” Gerard stood, flailing his arms above his head as if it would help his point.

“This, Gerard,” Frank said, gesturing to Gerard’s too noticeable cheekbones, sunken eyes and bony limbs, “is not beautiful. You look like death and even the horror movie fan boy in you wouldn’t think so.”

“Frank...” Gerard murmured, meeting Frank’s eyes for the first time “if he asks me to do something I don’t want to do, then I won’t do it, okay? I'm completely fine. Just stop worrying about me all the time…. And don’t tell anyone about this, please,”

Frank kept quiet; he really didn’t want to fall out with his best friend when he so obviously needed him to be there for him. Even though he didn’t want to let the subject do, he reluctantly agreed and pulled Gerard into his arms, burying his face into his collarbone.

Gerard knew Frank wouldn’t let him live this down, but he could at least hope the subject wouldn’t be bought up again anytime soon.

Frank watched sadly as Gerard pushed around the food on his plate and tried – and failed, from Frank’s eyes at least- to hide the new bruise on his jaw with his hair at lunch the next day.

Gerard didn’t want any more of his friends finding out about the reason for his change, so he pretended everything was fine and even joined in the conversation when he saw fit.

Of course, he wasn’t fooling his best friend, who just shook his head and stared sadly at his food.

Every now and then he would sneak glanced over towards the jock table and shoot daggers into Bert’s back, silently vowing to confront the man and maybe even kill him if the abuse didn’t stop soon.

Frank’s chance to talk to Bert came round sooner rather than later, when both of them were caught in the empty bathroom at the end of the school day.

As soon as the younger boy entered, Bert stubbed out his half spent cigarette on the wash basin and smiled, showing off his crooked nicotine stained teeth.

“Frankie boy! Fancy seein’ you here!” he chirped, opening the window to air the place out.

“Bert,” Frank muttered coldly, glaring up at him.

“Wha’s wrong with your face? y’know it’ll stay like that if the win’ changes”

“Shut the fuck up Bert, I know what you’re doing to Gerard,” he sneered, stepping closer.

“An’ what’s that? Takin’ him home and fuckin’ him through his mattress. Your just jealous, Iero,” Bert cackled, now chest to chest with the smaller man whose face was slowly working it’s was through several shades of red and purple in his anger.

“I’m not jealous,” he started slowly, gritting his teeth at the bitter taste of his lies, “I know you’re hurting him. Starving him. Making him think lowly of himself and pressuring him into sex. I've always known you were a jerk, even before all this started, but now I realise your sick. A sick, sick man, McCracken,”

Bert’s nostrils flared in anguish and his beefy hand lashed out, catching Frank so hard across his cheek his head snapped to the side. Frank raised a cautious hand to his cheek to touch the red mark, his face hardening as his hands ball into fists. Bert caught his fist when he went to punch and twisted it behind his back.

“Don’t even think about it,” he whispered lowly in the shorter boy’s ear, “and if you tell anyone about what’s happening with Gerard, I’ll kill you both,”
