Gerard’s POV
“Frank. Please. Get up. Please let us know you’re alright,” I said, a tear dropping to the hand of the pale figure lying motionless on the hospital bed.
What could he have done? Why would he have done it? He told me he was ready. The temptation to tell Jamia now was killing me but I couldn’t begin to imagine the trouble and upset I’d cause if I did. It was only Frank’s who could fix this one.
I’d been sitting on this seat for the past twenty minutes, just waiting for some sign of arousal instead of his almost comatose state.
As soon as I got the call from Jamia I was worried. We each held one of Frank’s hands in the back of the ambulance hoping for some reaction that never occurred.
I dreaded to look at Cherry and Lily, hearing their piercing screams as the paramedics entered the house and Lindsey took them, trying to soothe them from the horrific sight of a knocked-out father. That was something I never wanted to see again.
“Please, baby, don’t do this to me. I don’t know what you’ve done, but if you can hear me...” Jamia trailed off, welling up.
I put an arm around her, trying to calm her, but obviously I was ever bit as apprehensive as she was.
The space around us fell silent, just the steady beat of the heart monitor pulsing. That was the only hope we had: a steady heartbeat.
Until a few minutes later, when I felt Frank’s hand tighten around my cold one, shaking with fear.
“Frank? Oh Frankie. Please, can you hear me?” I asked, some hope in my voice.
“What is it, Gerard?!”
“Jamia?” I heard a deep sexy voice murmur.
Oh my goodness, my baby. He’s back.
Frank opened his eyes, revealing the golden-hazel irises that I longed to see, and sat up abruptly and flung his arms round me and Jamia.
“What happened? Am I in...hospital?”
“You blacked out, baby. I was worried sick! I thought I was gonna lose you!” Jamia said, trying to believe what she was seeing.
“What did you do?” I asked, dying to know what he’d done.
He sat silently on the bed for a few moments, trying to recall the events from previous hours.
“I just remember...falling into this blackness. It was...calm and still. It felt good, like I hadn’t to give a crap about anything. And I heard...a woman...calling my name...”
“Frank, that was me! You heard me and didn’t respond!” Jamia cried, almost annoyed to hear this.
“I...couldn’t. I thought it was just a dream or something, I don’t know!”
I saw Frank peering past my shoulder at a tall, thin and attractive blonde woman in her twenties: the doctor.
“How long have you been awake?” she asked, shocked at the sudden arousal.
“Just a couple of minutes,” I replied to the question which wasn’t directed at me.
“Well, I’m Dr Jennifer Dunn, and if you don’t mind, I’m going to take some blood samples while you’re awake,” she said, still looking at Frank despite me answering the question.
Crap, here come the needles. I could feel the colour draining from my face.
“I’m gonna...go outside,” I said, trying not to think about the needles pricking under Frank’s skin, even though it didn’t bother him. Jamia smirked.
“As long as you don’t leave me alone, “she said.
“I won’t. I said I’d stay here from the start to the end,” and I left the private, enclosed room.
Frank’s POV
“Right, Mr Iero, are you okay with me doing this?” Dr Dunn asked, pulling on her rubber gloves.
“Sure,” I said, trying to show my inked and metalled body and how I was 100% used to needles.
A small prick and it was done. I really don’t get Gerard sometimes - he makes such a scene about needles. But I love him and he means the world to me.
“I’m also going to require a urine sample from you,” the doctor announced.
“Alright,” I replied as she handed me a tube and I headed to the bathroom, bringing Jamia with me in case I keeled over again.
“You’ll be alright, I know it,” Jamia reassured me as I shut the toilet door.
A few minutes later, I returned to the room where Gerard had also returned to. I climbed back under the scratchy hospital bed sheets and handed the tube of fluid over to the waiting doctor.
“Thanks. I’ll be back soon,” replied the blonde woman.
Jamia and Gerard were still sat beside the bed, wondering what caused my episode.
“She better be back soon,” Gee grumbled. He was so sexy when he was grouchy. At least I knew he was concerned about me. And so was Jamia, naturally. Maybe I went too far. I mean I have my kids at home with my best friend’s wife and my own wife is sitting here worried sick. And none of them know what’s wrong with me.
That’s when the door opened. Toyah and Aimee stepped in.
“Crap, Frankie, we heard what happened. I wasn’t expecting to see you awake!” Toyah cried, wrapping her arms around my neck.
“Hey,” I smiled back, pleased that they’d made an effort despite only knowing me a few weeks.
“So what happened?” Aimee asked, sitting down as Toyah pulled over a chair for herself.
“I dunno. I just remember blanking out. The doctor took some samples so I guess I’ll just have to wait...”
I looked over at Jamia and Gerard and they smiled back in synchrony, glad to see me completely normal.
We’d been sitting there about an hour when there was a knock on the door.
“We have your results,” Dr Dunn said quietly, closing the door behind her.
Toyah and Aimee got up to leave of their own accord, but I let them stay – they might as well hear it firsthand.
“Well, I don’t know if this is going to shock you,” the doctor started, “but we found traces of Xanax in your urine sample...”
The room fell silent. It all came back to me, like a blazing inferno spreading through the screaming silence.
Crap. I did do it.
“Frank?” Gerard called, waving a hand in front of my dazed face. “Did you do it?”
“Yeah. I did do it.”
“Frank, you’re lying!” Jamia called, unconvinced of my sanity and rather confused.
“No. I did do it. I remember it. It’s all flooding back to me.”
“Frank. Anything else you want to say?” Gerard looked at me, still not letting me forget about my affair.
“No,” I was determined. Out of all the times I had already missed to say it, this was probably the worst time.
“Well, we have to do another test before we can discharge you. If you’re free of drugs, you’re free to go,” Dr Dunn said, relieving me as she changed the subject.
“Okay. I want out of here. I wanna see my Cherry and Lilz again,” I said, Jamia smiling back at me again.
Toyah and Aimee said their farewells and left the room with Dr Dunn, leaving me with Gerard and Jamia in the room alone, but only for a few minutes. The doctor returned with another tube and I got up and left to pee again.
Jamia’s POV
I stayed with Frankie all night and Gerard went back home to help Lindsey as Cherry and Lily’s parents. I must have been awake till at least 4am, but I’m not a night owl and fell asleep at the last hurdle.
And woke up with my beautiful husband staring back into my eyes as I stirred in the seat beside his bed.
“Hey, babe.”
“Hey Frank. Have you ever woken up this early in your life?” I joked.
“You know what, I really don’t think so.”
I giggled at my husband’s sense of humour.
Dr Dunn knocked on the door and entered the room and propped herself up against the wall opposite Frank.
“Well, I’ve got good news! You’re free to go home later today!” she announced, a smile on her face, which automatically put a smile on mine too.
Dr Dunn continued discussing what had appeared in the test and then she left for Frank to get dressed into his standard skinny jeans and Misfits t-shirt, ready to see his little daughters at home.
I got up and led him to my black 4x4 which Gerard had kindly driven down and left in the Belleville Hospital car park the night before. He’d been a huge help, as was Lindsey. I know we’d only been here less than 24 hours, but I couldn’t have got through it without them. I owed them so much.
It was quiet for the first part of the journey home but then Frank broke the silence.
“Frank. Please. Get up. Please let us know you’re alright,” I said, a tear dropping to the hand of the pale figure lying motionless on the hospital bed.
