I took my first step into the familiar forest. It had been long ago since the fire erupted, and I could still see the scars that remained. Some of the trees I used to walk by had been wiped out with darkened stumps in their places.
The birds were singing their normal song, although now there were new sounds filling my ears with every step I took. I could tell there had been more fires after I had left just by smelling the air. A faint scent of smoke lingered as though one had happened yesterday.
The faces of other creatures came to my vision, some old, some new. A few of them stopped to look at me with a puzzled stance. Did they recognize me after how long I had been gone? Some approached me cautiously, curiously looking me over and taking a whiff of my scent.
After they took their time to examine me and realized I wouldn't harm them, they scurried off to their homes. I then started my own way again. I didn't know what to expect, but I did know one thing for sure;
I was home.
