It seemed that after they’d sent each other the first message, Mikey and Gerard had very much overcome the first hurdle. After that, they were messaging each other at least once a day, gradually writing more and more until they were virtually typing a novel each time they spoke. Mikey found that it was becoming easier each time he sat down to type to Gerard; whereas for the first couple of weeks he had to mentally prepare himself for at least an hour, then taking another hour – sometimes more – to actually write the message, he was now able to sit down and just type as he thought it. It seemed that no matter how awkward he thought the words were which he’d written, Gerard either didn’t notice, didn’t care or was simply too kind to point it out. Gerard, on the other hand, found himself practically bouncing around the house, or the shop, or wherever he happened to be whenever he expected a reply sometime in the next couple of hours.

It turned out that the pair had far more in common than either of them expected, though it was the little things. On the surface, they couldn’t be more different. Gerard had more confidence than he knew what to do with, happily talking to anyone and everyone, often coming off as brash and almost boisterous, while Mikey was incredibly reserved, preferring to keep himself to himself unless absolutely necessary. Little by little though, Gerard was changing that.

Unsurprisingly enough, it was Gerard who suggested they moved their conversations to an instant messenger. He didn’t know about Mikey, not really wanting to ask, but he was paying even less attention to the other messages he received on the dating website than he had been before. Now, if it wasn’t from Mikey, he deleted it without even looking at it. Right now he doubted that anyone else would compare. Seeing as there really was no reason for him to keep logging onto the dating website, barring to see if Mikey had replied, he figured that it made perfect sense to just talk to each other on a chat thing. It would certainly be quicker and, as much as he enjoyed reading at least a page and a half of writing from the other man, it would definitely be easier.

So, after Mikey had agreed with his plan, he’d signed up to the agreed messenger and logged in at the time they’d decided that they were going to chat. When he signed in, Mikey was already online. He didn’t even have to worry about whether saying hi right now would make him seem too eager, the other apparently deciding that it wouldn’t.

Mikeeeey. – Hey there :)

Suddenly, Gerard was very glad that the laptop was between them. He was certain that no one should wear a smile as big as he currently was after just a simple hello.

Get a Way – Hey! :) How are you doing?

After getting the boring pleasantries out of the way, Gerard realised that this would actually prove whether or not they could have a conversation together. Thinking through the last message Mikey had written him, the one he hadn’t replied to seeing as they’d decided to try out the whole instant thing, he decided to go with that.

Get a Way – How was that woman at work today? Is she still being a complete bitch?

Mikey had told him about this woman who apparently seemed to think she deserved his job. From what the other had said, the woman, who was considerably older than him at the bad side of thirty, had been making his life deliberately difficult. Giving him the wrong addresse to type letters to, sending him on jobs he didn’t need to do, causing him to get in trouble when he did actually do them. The worst of it was though that to everyone else, this woman was nice as pie, making everyone think that Mikey was just being a whiny kid.

Mikeeeey. – Urgh, don’t even get me started on her.
– You know what she did today? Well, of course you don’t...you weren’t there...
– But anyway. She sent me half way across the city to deliver this super important letter to another company, which just had to be delivered that day and then when I got there it turned out she’d just stuffed a blank piece of paper into an envelope.
– I don’t think I’ve ever been so angry!

Get a Way – Awhh, Mikey! :( That’s so out of order of her!
– Did you tell your dad or someone?

Mikeeeey. – Yeah, fat lot of good that did. He reckons that I must have taken the wrong letter by mistake.
– Doesn’t explain why there was a blank piece of paper in there to start off with, but apparently no one cares about that.

Get a Way – Oh, I’m sorry. :( -sends all the virtual hugs-
– Want me to come and scare her off with my weirdness? ;)

Mikeeeey. – No! Your weirdness is all mine!

Brown eyes widened impossibly behind thick rimmed glasses as the twenty-three year old realised what he had said. He’d effectively claimed Gerard as his own. He hadn’t know what exactly has possessed him to say it – he could easily pretend and say that it was merely that he didn’t want Gerard to become the next target of The Bitch, as they’d so cleverly dubbed her. He doubted that was all it was though, rather the thought of Gerard being like they were with anyone else not sitting well with him. Not that they were actually like anything.

He should apologise. Apologise and take it back. Before he could though, Gerard replied.

Get a Way – Oh, is that so? ;)

A blush coloured his cheeks and he actually had to take a moment or two to think about what he could say back, without making a complete idiot out of himself.

Mikeeeey. – Urmm...

Smooth, Mikey. Real smooth.

Mikeeeey. – Yes? I mean...no. It’s not. I just...
– She’s a right bitch. I don’t want her to target you instead.
– Not that she would..because you were probably joking...
– But..yeah...

Before he could dig himself in a hole so deep he could probably hit China, Gerard apparently decided to save him.

Get a Way – Mikey, chill. I was joking. :) Well..I wasn’t, but still. Chill. :D

He took a deep breath, running his fingers through his fringe as he tried to calm himself down and convince him it really was alright. It didn’t actually take as long as expected; Gerard seemed to have this way of joking everything away, making even the most embarrassing moments seem almost planned. It was something that Mikey definitely needed to learn the skill for.

His eyebrows furrowed some as a banner popped up at the top of the screen, saying that they both had webcams.

Get a Way – Oh look, it’s telling us we both have webcams
– Fancy getting a look at the awkwardnesss in real time?

Apparently the time it took Mikey to reply triggered some sort of alarm bells in Gerard’s mind.

Get a Way – You don’t have to, if you don’t want to. But you know...might as well prove that I’m not some weird pervy old man.

Mikeeeey. – Okay, then. :) I might go on in a minute.

When the message popped up saying that Gerard wanted to go on webcam with him, he clicked it without a moment’s hesitation. At least now he’d know for sure whether the man he’d been talking to for several weeks was who he actually said he was. He held his breath without realising it as the webcam loaded, though when it did a smile instantly curved to his lips. Looking back at him was exactly who he expected to see; dark hair sticking up in all directions, some falling in front of his face and a wide grin dancing across his face. Gerard lifted one hand, waving at the screen, before he dipped his head and began typing.

Get a Way – Glad I’m not some sixty year old, yeah? ;)

Laughing, Mikey watched as Gerard actually winked at the screen.

Mikeeeey. – I actually have a thing for old men...
– I’m kinda disappointed to be honest

When he saw Gerard laugh, he couldn’t help but laugh with him despite knowing that the other couldn’t see it. That wasn’t fair though. Gerard had proved he was genuine – now it was his turn. He ran his fingers through his fringe, flattening it down some more even knowing it was perfectly straight. It wasn’t enough though. He needed to make sure that he looked perfect. Quickly dashing from the lounge, he stood in front of the large mirror in the hallway and began to tug at tiny pieces of hair, positioning them so they looked just right. Only when he was content with how he looked did he practically run back to the laptop, sending the request for himself to go on webcam.

Seeing his own face on screen was a rather odd sensation, though he focused on looking at Gerard. Giving a small, characteristically shy smile, he raised one hand and gave a tiny wave. What the other man did next though caused the smile he wore to widen considerably.

He brought one hand up to his face, trying to hide the blush which flooded to his cheeks, as Gerard lifted up a piece of paper with Hey, gorgeous! ;) written on it.

Get a Way – Awwhh! Are you blushing? That’s so cute!

Mikeeeey. – No..I’m just..sun burnt?

Get a Way – Mmmhmm. Whatever you say. :D

Several hours later, Gerard wondered why he’d ever worried about whether or not he and Mikey could hold a conversation. They got on just as well in real time as they did when writing novels to each other, if not better. Once they’d both gone on webcam, it took Gerard about ten minutes before he started pulling faces at Mikey, holding up signs, putting a pair of boxers on his head and doing just about anything and everything to get the other man laughing. It seemed Mikey was too shy to replicate the behaviour, though he did hold up a number of signs to Gerard, prompting them to take a picture of Gerard wearing a pair of oven gloves and Mikey holding a sign saying Kiss the chef! A picture which was now the twenty-six year old’s wallpaper on his laptop.

More important than that though was the fact that the pair of them had swapped mobile numbers. But even more importantly still, they’d arranged to meet up next Friday. Unsurprisingly, it was Gerard who had to suggest it but, judging from how quickly Mikey had agreed, it seemed that the other certainly wasn’t adverse to the idea and had probably been considering it himself. They’d each suggested numerous places for them to meet up, though it was eventually Mikey’s suggestion of going for dinner and seeing how things went from there which they’d agreed on. Personally, Gerard would have decided on something a little more exciting, but given that he was trying desperately hard not to scare Mikey away, he’d figured it was best just to go with it.

The next week dragged by at a complete snail’s pace. It wasn’t made any easier by the fact that Gerard spoke to Mikey either by text or instant messages every night after work. Frank was thoroughly pissed off about the fact that he could no longer look over Gerard’s shoulders at the long messages Mikey used to write, though his friend was somewhat placated by the fact that the pair of them had now taken to laughing at the idiotic things other people sent him. They’d nearly gotten themselves suspended from work on one day when they’d opened a particular message, only to be confronted with a rather close up picture of someone who thought it would be a good idea to strip naked a take a picture of their cock. Frank had sworn loudly, causing several customers with small children to glare at him, prompting Gerard to burst into hysterical laughter. It just so happened that the whole thing was witnessed by their boss who had chosen that day to check how things were going.

It was only Gerard’s quick fabrication about watching a video of a potential new album they could begin stocking and having one of those scary faces popping up which stopped the pair of them from being sent home in disgrace.

Even amusing things such as that couldn’t make the time go any faster, though after what seemed like an eternity Friday eventually rolled around. Work was virtually unbearable.

“So, today’s the big day. First date with Mister Mikey. Tell me; on a scale of one to ten, how turned on are you at the idea of finally seeing him properly?”

Turning to face Frank slowly, Gerard blinked several times, amazed that his friend had actually said that out loud. “Did you really just asked me how turned on I am? Like, seriously mate. Is that something you really want to know? I know that we’re friends and all, but do you really want to know about the goings on of my dick?”

“Yes. I can safely say that I do.” Damn Frank and his constant ability to call his bluff. “But I’d like to say right now that you will get no disrespect from me if you have sex on the first date. In fact, you’ll probably get disrespect if you don’t get it on. If you don’t get to third base, I will be forced to consider disowning you.”

The rest of the day continued in pretty much the same way, meaning that by the end of it Gerard was ready to kill Frank. Or at least lock him in a backroom somewhere so he didn’t have to listen to him anymore. Somehow though, by nothing short of a miracle, he managed to get through the day without committing murder, leaving him to go home and try and make himself somewhat presentable.

---------------

It was here. Friday had actually arrived and it was fair to say that Mikey had more butterflies in his stomach right now than he’d ever felt in his whole twenty-three years of life. He was more nervous now than he was when he had to play bass in front of his whole school when he was sixteen and he’d spend the whole night before it actually being sick because of how nervous he was.

Oh god, what if he threw up on Gerard?

That would completely ruin everything. Nothing shattered any potential for a relationship faster than being sick on them on your first date. And if there was any possibility that he could date Gerard, then he sure as hell wasn’t going to be one to ruin it. It was bad enough getting over his shyness once, let alone having to do it all again. Plus, he doubted he’d be able to find someone who he got on with as well as he seemed to with Gerard.

Looking into his cupboard, he let out a soft huff of frustration. He had no idea what to wear. It had been ages since he’d gone out with the deliberate intention of looking good for someone – sure, he dressed nicely enough when he went clubbing, but he never planned to hook up with someone – and it was only now that he was realising he had no smart clothes. Maybe that wasn’t such a bad thing though? He could hardly see Gerard dressing up in a shirt and tie, so there was no reason he should.

Two hours later, Mikey was dressed in a pair of grey skinny jeans with some well loved, though not scruffy, leather boots, complete with a simple black t-shirt, his ever-present paw print necklace and a dark blue jacket. His hair was, as usual, straightened to perfection and there were just the faintest hints of black eyeliner smudged around his eyes.

Well, this was as ready as he was ever going to be.

Thankfully he and Gerard only lived half an hour away from each other, the restaurant they’d decided to visit being placed almost exactly halfway between both. It was undoubtedly a good thing that he only had to drive for fifteen minutes; if he’d been alone in the car for much longer he was certain he would have turned around and gone back home. His nerves got progressively worse with every mile closer to his destination he reached, until the whole being sick on Gerard thing seemed like a startlingly real possibility.

Once he’d found somewhere to park, he couldn’t help but glance at the other cars around him knowing full well that one could well be Gerard’s. Crap. Crap crap crap, there was no way he could do this. He was so terrified that he wondered whether or not he’d be able to stand and walk into the restaurant without his knees going. Oh, that would be attractive, the first thing Gerard saw of him being his face getting acquainted with the floor.

A couple of deep breaths later and he’d managed to make his way into the restaurant without anything disastrous happening. After greeting the waiter and asking for the table booked for Way, he followed the man through the restaurant until he reached a table stationed towards the back and somewhat out of the way. Offering his thanks, he turned to look at the man sat there, a tiny nervous smile tugging at his lips.

“Gerard?”
