Chapter 1: Where Our Story Begins
Gives a little background into who Alyce is and what she thinks of her 2 best friends, Bill and Jeff.
?Blocked
The day started out pretty normal, normal for me that is. My name is Alyce Mariee Gordine. That's pronounced "Gore-Dean". I would have chose my mother's maiden name, but Duncan isn't much better, especially when her nickname is Delicious Duncan.
We moved to Lafayette back in 73' to 'start over', as my mom puts it. She had a bad run-in back in L.A. with a few men and decided for her safety and mine that retreating to her old hometown would be best. My mother wasn't the type to give me lectures on how drugs are bad, or that sex is only for marriage. She wasn't the best role model. She was addicted to LSD for the longest time and only recently decided to turn it down. We aren't very close her and I, but I have no one else. My grandfather lives back in L.A. and runs a cool hangout spot called 'The Troubadour'. They get small time bands to come in and show them what they got. I've only been inside The Troubadour once or twice and most times it was to haul my mother out.
My mother had gotten pregnant really early on in her life. She was only 14 when she had me. As to where my father is...I still don't know. I was told that my mother was a great mother in the beginning. Sometimes I look at the old photos she has of when I was only a few months old. We looked happy.
When I was 2 years old, my mother got kicked out of her family home by her father. We lived on the streets for a few months until a young man from Malibu took us in. He was deeply in love with my mother, but the only relationship she had with him was strictly 'business' related. That's when her career started...
One night the man that was letting us stay raped my mother and she became pregnant. She had a miscarriage 5 months in and never recovered. From there on she took LSD to console her problems.
Indianna was easier on us then Cali was. In fact it was much easier. I was actually able to stay in one school for over a year and meet new friends. I was known to be a trouble maker in the school, always talking back to the teachers and ditching classes. I really didn't and still don't believe in formal schooling. I was the 'cool kid' among my peers since I knew where to score pot and alcohol...my mom's closet. I would sell cups of rum and Jack to the older kids for 2 bucks a cup. Hey at least I tried to help my mom out...somewhat.

"Hey Ace," called out the adolescent Bill Bailey.
I was just coming out of the principal's office for telling off another student...again. I turn around to spot Bill and Jeffery Isbell, my two best friends, running toward me.
"Hey guys."
"What happened this time?" Jeff asks with a smirk.
"I threatened to slap that bitch Suzanne again." I say non-chalantly as I start walking with the two boys.
We get outside the school doors before anyone says another word.
"So did you?" Bill asks excitedly.
"I never got the chance. Some fat teacher pulled me away by my hair before I could do anything."
"So why was she at you again?" Jeff asks shyly as he kicks a rock.
"All the girls have been making fun of me lately..."
It's true. Every girl in grade 7 at my school was always at me. The reason they were all at me was the typical...I was an early bloomer.
"Howcome?" Bill asks as he takes a seat on the stone wall next to our school.
"Because I'm a girl."
"That's stupid?" Jeff says as he sits next to Bill.
"Because I have boobs and all the others don't. I find that's really immature of them anyways. They're just jealous is all."
Bill and Jeff look toward my chest almost simultaneously.
"Pigs..." I sigh out as I turn away from them.
"Are we still going up to the field?" Jeff tries to change the subject.
"Yeah. I'll stop at home and pick up a few things before we go though." I turn back forgetting about the chest incident.
"Remember church boy has to be home before 8 or else he'll get another beating." Jeff laughs out.
A cold tension fills the area.
"Shut the fuck up! At least I have BOTH my parents." Bill yells out.
"Dude...I was just joking."
"Well don't fucking joke about that...Someone might hear you."
I shake my head at the 2 boys and proceed on my way home. They jump off the wall and follow shortly behind me.
"Can you guys stop fighting? It's really embarrassing." I giggle as we make a turn toward our street.
Bill, Jeff and I all live on the same street in the little city of Lafayette. I met Bill first. My mother thought it would be a good idea to set free to all our sins and take me to church one Sunday. Funnily enough it was the same church Bill goes to for choir and other religious bullshit. My first impression of Bill wasn't too good. He was a little boy up with the choir. Fuck did he ever have good vocal chords. I always told him he could sing and play piano. I started talking to Bill after the reception and later found out that my mother and his both knew each other. Funny eh? We didn't really hang out much until school started again, and even then we didn't. Bill didn't take much interest in me until Jeff started talking to me one day. Jeff and I were both at the principal's office one morning. He was there because he took someone's milk at lunch. Pretty petty, but he got in trouble. I was there for my everyday mischievousness. I think I was 9 at the time and he was 10. After that day Jeff and I started talking a bit more and then he introduced me to Bill. We were inseperable after that moment.
They're both a year and a half older than me, but we're all in the same grade. I'm a smart kid, but I act out because I'm bored. The teachers couldn't understand how smart I am and the way I act out. Beats me too I guess...
"So what are we doing for your birthday Alyce?"Jeff shyly questions.
Jeffery was always the shyest among the 3 of us. He wasn't in to being seen or talked about. He was really down to earth and mellow. Bill and I nicknamed him Izzy or Iz, for short, because of his last name Isbell. He was always the tallest between the 3 of us, but also the skinniest. Iz and I always got along much better because of our interest in the same music like Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan and Aerosmith. He hardly ever swore and was quite well-mannered compared to Bill and I.
Bill's a different story. Him and Iz are like night and day. Bill is always the first to get in trouble and the last to show up. He's been swearing since I can remember. He was also the first to try alcohol between him and Iz. Bill and I are usually the ones to fight first. He's cocky, but also very cute at times. He helps me through a lot of the things I had to go through, like with my mother, and we share each other's deepest thoughts. I knew about his beatings from his father before anyone else did, and I still will take it to the grave. We fight like brother and sister, but it still doesn't mean we don't have each other's backs. He's more into Nazareth, Elton John, and Deep Purple.
"What do you guys have in mind?" I ask forgetting that my birthday was only a few short days away.
"Well I have something in mind." Bill speaks up without any eye contact.
"What?" Iz asks so smoothly.
"Well I have a special gift for Alyce." Bill smirks at me.
"What do you mean?"
"Well I'll have to tell you later, because right now isn't a good time."
"Okay. How about when we get to the field?"
"We'll see." He smiles sheepishly at me.
We finally get to my run-down house. Bill's house was across the street from mine and Iz's was next door. Izzy's bedroom is on the same side as mine. Sometimes we send each other messages by writing on paper and showing each other through the windows.
My mother was never home. Sometimes I wouldn't see her for weeks at a time. That's usually when Iz and Bill would bring me over for supper. Mostly Iz though since Bill's family was different.
"Hey guys want to come up to my room and listen to some of my new records?" I ask as we enter my house.
"You got more?" Iz asks intrigued.
"Yup! My grandfather sent some to me from Cali." I smile as if I had just won the lottery.
"Cali eh? What's it like there?" Bill asks.
"It's so beautiful! Everything is different from this shithole. The smell of the air! The taste! Even the sun feels different and brighter in California."
"The taste?" Izzy asks perplexed.
"Figure of speech Iz!" I giggle as I lightly punch his arm.
"One day...I'm going back there and I'm going to make a difference." I play in my fantasy.
"Hah and one day I'll become a kickass singer like Steven Tyler or Robert Plant." Bill spits out.
"You never know man." Iz backs me up.
"What makes her think she can become somebody in California?" Bill asks talking more toward Iz.
"I think she can do it. I mean there's options."
"Like?"
"Well there's always a band...or even a model." Iz smiles at me.
"Oh gee...thanks Iz." I blush and turn away. He's been making me blush a lot more lately.
"Anyway you guys up for listening to the new records?"
"Not really." Bill asks with jealousy written all over his face.
"Why not?"
"I just wanna head up to the field. Release some tension." He smiles at me.
Iz nods with Bill's answer, so I don't question any further. I hurry over to my mother's room and sneak into her closet. She has a few grams of weed a little bit of Jack left. I take both. I return back to the room with Iz and Bill whispering.
"What are you love doves whispering about now?" I giggle while stuffing my bookbag.
"Nothing." Bill shuts up right away.
Iz looks distrubed in some way, but I shrug it off. We leave my house and scurry off to the field.
