"What?!"
"I know, I've been having a lot of doubts in less than a day. Do you have any idea what we're going up against? I mean-"
As Jennifer rambled, most people in the room were thinking the exact same thing.
We have to make her go with us.
This was a problem only the power of rock n roll can solve.
Brendon and Gerard knew what to do.
I'm the son of rage and love
Jennifer stopped talking to look at the boys.
"What?"
The Jesus of Suburbia
"What's happening?" she asked
The Bible of none of the above
On a steady diet of
More people joined in
Soda pop and ritalin
No one ever died for my sins in Hell
As far as I can tell
At least the ones I've gotten away with
While more people joined in, singing along, Jennifer just looked at them, baffled.
And there's nothing wrong with me
This is how I'm supposed to be
In a land of make-believe
That don't believe in me
Jennifer was puzzled. No one in this town had ever believed in her, yet these 15 people were trying to persuade her to go to do something illegal with them!
Frank started up again
Get my television fixed
Sitting on my crucifix
The living room
Or my private womb
While the moms and Brads are away
Bob sang this part
To fall in love and fall in debt
Gerard and Mikey sang this
To alcohol and cigarettes
And Mary Jane
To keep me insane
Jon chimed in
Doing someone else's cocaine
Everybody joined in
And there's nothing wrong with me
This is how I'm supposed to be
In a land of make-believe
That don't believe in me
"What do you say, Jen?" asked Bob
"I don't know. I'd be leaving my brother alone"
"Jennifer, I see the way he is!" Ryan said "It isn't your job to stay in this damned city forever, just for him!"
"I know, but-"
"Ok" Ryan said "Let me show you what this city city really is!"
He grabbed her arm and went outside and started to walk around with her, while the others followed.
At the center of the Earth in the parking lot
Jennifer smiled and pointed
Of the 7-11 where I was taught
She would always hang out there.
Ryan chimed in
The motto was just a lie
Jennifer frowned
It says home is where your heart is but what a shame
Cause everyone's heart doesn't beat the same
It's beating out of time
"I mean, look around you!" Ryan said
City of the dead
At the end of another lost highway
"Where's this city going to get you?"
Signs misleading to nowhere
City of the damned
Lost children with dirty faces today
No one really seems to care
Jennifer sighed. No one from this city ever did go anywhere.
I read the graffiti
In the bathroom stall
Like the holy scriptures of the shopping mall
And so it seemed to confess
It didn't say much
But it only confirmed that
The center of the earth
Is the end of the world
And I could really care less
Everyone else sang along with Ryan.
City of the dead
At the end of another lost highway
Signposts leading to nowhere
City of the damned
Lost children with dirty faces today
No one really seems to care
"Look, we all care about you! We want you to come, but if you want to leave things how they are, then no one will stop you" Mazy and Ella said
I don't care if you don't
I don't care if you don't
I don't care if you don't care
I don't care if you don't
I don't care if you don't
I don't care if you don't care
I don't care if you don't
I don't care if you don't
I don't care if you don't care
I don't care if you don't
I don't care if you don't
I don't care if you don't care
"Do you REALLY think this is the best you can do in life? Stay in some town and rot? If that's what people told you, they're lying!" Natalia and Sam said
Everyone is so full of shit
Born and raised by hypocrites
Hearts recycled but never saved
From the cradles to the grave
"You can do anything! Just come with us!" Amanda said
We are the kids of war and peace
From Anaheim to the middle east
We are the stories and disciples
Of the Jesus of suburbia!
Jennifer still had a little bit of thinking to do. What if they failed?
Land of make believe
And that don't believe in me
Land of make believe
And I don't believe
And I don't care!
I don't care!
Land of make believe
And that don't believe in me
Land of make believe
And I don't believe
And I don't care!
I don't care!
Land of make believe
And that don't believe in me
Land of make believe
And I don't believe
And I don't care!
I don't care!
Jennifer made up her mind. She was going.
Jennifer chimed in
Land of make believe
And that don't believe in me
Land of make believe
And I don't believe
And I don't care!
I don't care!
"I'm going!" she said.
Everyone cheered.
"Get the stuff in the car! You have some organizing in the van to do! Don't sex each other up. I'm going to talk to my brother and pack"
Everyone nodded and started organizing everything.
Jennifer was getting more nervous by the second...or was she excited.
She barged into her brother's room. She hadn't talked to him in a while.
"What do you want, loser?" he asked
She knew what she was going to say.
Dearly beloved are you listening?
I can't remember a word that you were saying
Are we demented or am I disturbed?
The space that's in between insane and insecure
She had that pit in her stomach. Was she just happy, or acting like an idiot by doing this?
Oh, therapy, can you please fill the void?
Am I retarded or am I just overjoyed?
Nobody's perfect and I stand accused
For lack of a better word, and that's my best excuse
"What are you saying Jenn?" he asked, terrified of what her answer might be.
She just went into her room and began packing, with him trailing behind her.
"What are saying?! What are you...are you...packing?" he asked
She could only nod.
"Why? Why are you doing this?"
"I need to live, Danny! I need to!" she said "I'm tired of this life! Sick, in fact! I need to go!"
"You ARE living! You're breathing, aren't you?"
Jennifer chuckled at his response, and all she could muster up was an "excuse".
To live and not to breathe
Is to die in tragedy
To run, to run away
To find what you believe
"I need to fight for what I believe in! All you've ever done was lie to me, telling me I was worthless! Everyone lied!"
And I leave behind
This hurricane of fucking lies
I lost my faith to this
This town that don't exist
So I run, I run away
To the lights of masochist
"You can't do this" he said "You're staying!"
"No! Whenever I have wanted to leave, alone, you wouldn't let me! But not again, not this time!" she said, as she walked down the stairs, with him following.
And I leave behind
This hurricane of fucking lies
And I walked this line
A million and one fucking times
But not this time
"WE'RE DONE JENN!" she heard outside.
"Alright I'll be there in a bit!"
She grabbed the doorknob, almost ready to leave.
"I'm not going to apologize for leaving. Not now. Not ever"
I don't feel any shame, I won't apologize
When there ain't nowhere you can go
She grabbed a piece of paper, and sang as she scribbled down something.
Running away from pain when you've been victimized
"So this is it, huh, sis? You're really doing this." he whispered
She handed him the piece of paper
"Read it when I leave" she said
Tales from another broken
Danny sighed, as a tear slid down his cheek.
"Don't do this" he said
Jennifer sighed and completed her last sentence
home
He chimed in
You're leaving...
You're leaving...
You're leaving...
Are you leaving home?
She jerked the door open and left.
He could hear the van doors close, and drive off.
She had really done it.
She had finally left.
