The Mistakes We Make
“I’m not getting married to Carmen,” I outright told my mother as she walked into the house after work. I was cutting right to the point. She had to know the truth. Even if I couldn’t tell the father of the child, I’d tell my parents, “I’m pregnant.”
“But you’re a… You’re not a virgin?” she asked in shock, “How could you—” she was stopped by a loud slap. To my face, to be precise. By my father. I fell down on my ass and looked up at him. My mother grabbed his arm, “George, don’t hurt him. He could have been raped.”
“I wasn’t raped,” I told them, sitting up and rubbing my cheek. I didn’t want them to be misled. I wanted them to know, “I went out and lost my virginity. I got knocked up. I’m not sorry.”
My father pushed my mother back and came charging at me.
Five years passed. Well, five years and 7 months, to be exact. I had had a baby boy. And I was living alone. It had been hard to get to where I did in a studio apartment with a little bed in the corner opposite mine.
“Daddy! Daddy! Wake up! Wake up!” little Adam yelled up toward me, “Daddy! Daddy!” he started shoving me harshly.
I groaned and opened one eye, “Sweetie, daddy’s tired,” I watched his expression change immensely to one that made it look like he was about to burst into tears. I didn’t want him to cry. I hated it when he cried. I didn’t want him to cry… I sighed, “Okay, I’m awake,” I sat up and pushed the covers off. I picked him up and sat him on my lap, “And guess what?”
“IT’S MY BIRTHDAY!” he chirped excitedly, bouncing up and down on my legs, “I’m this many!” he held up five fingers and I laughed. I kept bouncing, “Can we go to the park today?! Like you promised!”
I smiled, “Of course we can go to the park,” I kissed the top of his head. I picked him up and set him down on the floor. He was the spitting image of Brendon. No one thought he was my son. He had Brendon’s hair, a mixture of our eyes, Brendon’s face. He just looked so much like him that it made me sick when I thought about it. I missed Brendon and I hadn’t seen him in over five years. That was probably on purpose though, on my part.
After the two of us were ready, I took him down to the car and put him into his car seat—he was small for his age. I smiled, “Ready?” he nodded vigorously and I got into the driver’s seat. I drove off to the park and parked a little far. It wasn’t because I wanted to walk, but because it was around noon and everyone would be there with their little picnics and their kids all running wildly about.
Once we were parked, I helped him out of the car and held onto his hand, “Don’t let go of daddy’s hand, okay?” when he nodded, I locked the car and headed over to where the sandpit was, where there was swings and slides and, well, a jungle gym. Adam loved the jungle gym. It was cute, really. I sat there and watched him play with the other kids once he’d let go of my hand.
“Are you babysitting?” the woman next to me asked and I looked over at her. This was a frequently asked question when asked about my own son.
I gave her a gentle smile, “No. He’s my son.”
“Oh! I’m sorry! Well he had to get his good looks from somewhere,” she laughed, “Your wife must be beautiful.”
I shook my head, “I’m a single father. And I’m gay.”
“Oh, so he’s your son.”
“Yeah, he’s my son.”
“That’s unfortunate and really sad. Where’s the other father?”
“I don’t know. It… It’s a long story.”
“Well, I won’t pry.”
After that, it was silent. She didn’t say anymore to me and I didn’t speak to her. I had no reason to. I just watched Adam play with the other kids. I loved this part. I just loved to watch him smile. He had Brendon’s smile and seeing it made me so happy. And then he came running back around two and hopped up next to me, “Can we go to lunch?!”
I laughed. I didn’t know how this kid had so much energy. But I was sure he got it from his other father. From Brendon. I was pretty sure he had a big dose of ADHD too. This kid was always hyperactive. I picked him up and waved good bye to the woman who had been sitting next to me. We went to a diner nearby and took a seat, “So, does the birthday boy want… PANCAKES?!”
“Yeah!” he chirped, bouncing up and down in his seat.
The waiter came over, “Hi, my name is Brendon. I’ll be your server this afternoon. Can I get you started with any drinks?” he asked, handing us menus.
I looked up to say thank you when my heart stopped. Oh shit. Brendon. This was Brendon. I couldn’t say anything other than, “Brendon…?”
He smiled at me, “Yes?” and then his smile faded when he saw my face. He took a step back, “Ryan. I see that you… moved on. And had a kid. Congratulations.”
I looked at Adam who was excitedly bouncing. And then I looked at Brendon, “I’m… not with anyone. I’m single.”
“Oh. Where’s the other father?” he asked sadly, “Or where’s the mother?”
I laughed a little awkwardly, “Standing in front of me?” I suggested with some hesitation in my voice. I didn’t know how he’d react.
He then looked around him and looked at me, “Standing…” and then his face just wiped of emotion and he looked at our son sitting across from me. And it probably dawned on him how much Adam looked like him, “That’s… He’s…” he looked at me, “He’s… He’s my son?”
I slowly nodded, “That’s… That’s why I stopped the lessons. I was too scared to tell you. So I didn’t get married to Carmen. And my parents disowned me. So I was living on my own. I had Adam and have been taking care of him for the past five years.”
“That’s how old I am!” Adam chirped, “I’m 5!” he held up one hand with the fingers spread. He was so excited, it was really cute.
“Why… You should have told me. Dammit, Ryan, you should have told me.”
“Brendon, you were an escort. I don’t know if you still are. But you were. And that’s all you were. Our lessons didn’t mean anything to you. I knew that much. You just were making me into your little… s-e-x slave.”
“It did mean something to me!” he yelled, “I fucking loved you!”
The entire restaurant went silent. I did too. I just stared at him. First of all, he said the word, “Fucking!” Adam chirped and I cursed under my breath. Brendon looked over at him and shook his head.
“No, no, sweetheart, don’t say that word. That’s a very bad word!”
“Fucking!” he giggled.
“Adam, don’t say that word,” Ryan instructed harshly, “It’s a bad word and no one should use it. Brendon shouldn’t use it either. If you say it again, I’ll put you in a time out. On your birthday.”
Adam gasped and clapped his hands over his mouth, shaking his head. Brendon looked at me and sighed, “Well, I guess you really don’t need me. You have this all under control… I’ll get you a new waiter,” and he started walking away. I stood up and grabbed his arm. I pulled him to me and he gasped, “What?”
“I loved you too. That’s why I didn’t want to tell you. I was afraid you’d tell me to abort the baby. But I didn’t want to. I wanted to keep him. I was going to tell you. The last time I saw you, I was going to tell you. But I couldn’t. All I could say was that I wanted the lessons to end.”
“And that’s why. You could have told me. You could have asked what you should do. I would have given up everything to raise him with you. I could have given him an amazing first five years of his life. Just because I was an escort doesn’t mean the money’s dirty.”
“Do you even want to be in Adam’s life now?”
“What kind of question is that?”
“So the answer’s no. That was my fear. You wouldn’t love me for—”
“No, the answer is yes. I just wish you would have trusted me enough to tell me that you were pregnant. I wish you—”
“You look like me!” Adam chirped, getting up and looking up at Brendon, “Are you my twin?!” he gasped and hugged him, “Twinsies~” he giggled.
Brendon gasped and looked down at him. Tears welled in his eyes and he looked at me, “I need to be in his life, Ryan,” I watched as a tear slipped down his cheek, “Please.”
I hesitated, but smiled, “Okay. Just… We’ll come over tonight. If you really do want to be in his life… It’s his fifth birthday today. When we come over, I expect you to show me just how much you want to be in his life.”
His eyes widened, “Okay, I can do that!” he gave me a big smile, “I swear, I can do that!” he picked up Adam and smiled at him, “I’m not your twinsie, silly, I’m your daddy,” he poked his nose.
He tilted his head with furrowed brows, “But he’s my daddy!” he pointed at me. I laughed a little.
I walked over, “He’s your daddy too,” I kissed the side of his head.
“My birthday wish came true?!” he started bouncing, “YAY! I GET TWO DADDIES~” he hugged Brendon so tightly and more tears slipped out of his eyes. There was a part of me that was really happy about this. The other part was scared of what would happen tonight. If he let us down, Adam wouldn’t get a second dad. So I really hoped, beyond all hope, that he wouldn’t let us down… Because Adam wanted a second dad. Adam deserved a second dad.
