Frank's POV
Although Gee was smiling, I could see in his eyes that he was slightly nervous. I think every kid gets nervous when it comes to telling their parents that they're dating someone or even just telling their parents their sexual orientation – I know I found it hard and scary to tell my mum I was gay, but she simply hugged me, smiling and spent the rest of the day treating me, bit like a mother/son bonding day. It was really nice. I took hold of Gee's hand and squeezed it tight
"It will be fine, honestly." Gee smiled at me
"You're mum doesn't give bone crushing hugs does she?" I laughed and remembered what Mikey had said and shook my head
"No, nice gentle hugs, it will be me that she'll try and smoother me to death with kisses, like mum's do." Gee giggled and I smiled at him. I kissed his lips reassuringly, that everything would be fine. I felt him smile into the kiss before breaking away
"Come on, let's get this done and over with." Holding his hand I walked to my bedroom door and opened it. Mum would be in the kitchen, getting dinner ready, like she always does. I paused a second as Gee closed my door and we headed to the top of the stairs and went down them slowly. We held hands all the way to the bottom and as well walked through to the kitchen and stood in the door way. Each second I squeezed his hand and he squeezed back. As usual, mum had her back to us
"Uh, mum."
"Yes Frank? Is something the matter?" mum's are famous of knowing when you have something on your mind. Mine was an expert. I glanced at Gee and he held back a giggle and I could see a small blush beginning to creep into his cheeks
"No, well, I need to tell you something." I glanced back at Gee and he nodded his head
"We both have something to tell you." He finally spoke and my mum turned round. She observed us for a second, her eyes wondered between the two of us, dropping down to our linked hands before back up to meet our eyes, a smile forming on her face
"Me and Gerard, we're . . . . . . ."
"Dating." Gee finished off my sentence. My mum's smile remained on her face before she walked over
"I'm happy for both of you!" she pulled us both into a hug at the same time. I squeezed Gee's hand and smiled at him and he beamed back. The hug was gentle and not suffocating. I hadn't seen Gee's mum since the weekend and I expect I'd get a warm welcome as soon as I would see her. Mum released the two of us before cupping my face in her hands. I let go of Gee's hand to save the same thing happening to him because as suspected, my mum tried and succeeded at planting kisses all over my face. It only made blush and feel embarrassed as I tried to push away. I could hear Gee giggling
"My little boy is all grown up! Gerard you're welcome round here whenever you want, just make sure the two of you keep the noise level down." My mum looked me in the eyes still smiling wide and placed another kiss on my forehead
"Ok mum, thanks for your approval, you can stop now!" I broke free and stumbled backwards. She ruffled Gee's hair, which he wasn't expecting, but it was cute to see his hair a little ruffled
"I was thinking of making my famous apple and pear crumble flavoured with cinnamon for dessert." I beamed at her. My mum was good when it came to making sweet puddings
"I'll call on you when dinner is ready, if I don't get a response, I'll make sure to knock before entering." I rolled my eyes. Parents knew just how to annoy you. Gee smirked and we disappeared into the living room
"Mum's." I rolled my eyes and picked up the TV remote. Gee laughed as he sat down and I came and sat next to him
"I've had Mikey doing that stuff to me, saying he'll knock before entering and to make sure I don't make too much noise whenever you do come round." I giggled and had a thought
"Yeah but you can get your own back, if Holly comes round and they're in his room." I could see Gee was thinking about it before he smiled; an evil smile that made me laugh
"Much as I'd be scarred for life and probably have nightmares, I would find it amusing to see how pissed off he would get and then find it even more funny to see both mum and dad having the big 'chat' with him." I laughed even more before cuddling up close to Gee on the sofa.
Narrator's POV
Autumn drew in even more, the days becoming colder with each day of October. The lush green had vanished from the leaves and had turned to brilliant reds, golden oranges, warm yellows and chocolate browns. They littered the grounds and dropped down and were carried by the small breeze that had picked up. Shayne had returned to school and avoided Gerard, Mikey, Holly and Frank after their last encounter. Holly stared coldly at him every time he appeared with his group, which seemed to throw him off his topic of chat would turn around and move away. She raised her eyebrow every time and found it remarkable. But it didn't last for long. A few days before Halloween, Frank's birthday he confronted Mikey, who was by himself waiting by the school gates. Holly had been held back to be given a detention. Shayne was unhappy that he never got to finish what he had started weeks ago, but had barely laid a hand on Mikey before Gerard had again for a second time punched Shayne in the face, causing him to stumble backwards and full hard with a loud thump on the cold concrete. All hell broke loose in the crowds of students attempting to get home, but most had formed a circle and had begun their usual chant. Frank had fallen back, mortified and rooted to the spot; too scared to move as he watched as Gerard confronted Shayne a large group of jocks. In the rush to get home, other students were punched and hurt, causing more bruising; more pain; more blood to be spilt. Holly had more unless joined in on the fight as soon as she came out of the doors, only to be sent flying backwards after a blow to the stomach, which enraged Mikey. Frank held onto a winded Holly, while they both watched the two Way brothers fight side by side. It didn't end pretty, ending up with everyone throwing punches and two weeks' worth of detention. But the four friends weren't going to let the detention get in the way of Frank's birthday
Frank's POV
It was my birthday – normally I never enjoy my birthday but this year was an exception. I'd be spending it not just with my mum and Holly. I'd have Gee, Mikey and possibly even Bob and Ray this year. I had already been greeted by a tight hug and a kiss from Gee first thing this morning and even a hug from Mikey. Holly as ever had rugby tackled me into a hug. Although I didn't want anything for my birthday I had been told by them I would receive gifts from them this evening. I first had to get through the last five minutes of maths and then deal with an hour after school as part of my two weeks of detention. I threw no punches, but the school being as homophobic and sick as it was, I got lumbered with two weeks. Gee and Mikey had tried their best to get both me and Holly out of detention but got threatened with suspension – no way I was going to have Mikey and Gee suspended because of me and Holly. I glanced sideways at Gee and held back a laugh. He looked bored out of his skull and at the point of falling asleep. I guess the main thing out of this was that Shayne was being punished too, but I knew that he would get his own back yet again.
I laughed as the bell went as it brought Gee back out of his day dreams. He seemed rather dazed and confused before blushing a deep red with embarrassment. I sighed realising that I now had to go and do an hour of detention. I wonder what it would be today; clean up the locker rooms or sit and do lines for an hour
"Cheer up." Gee must have heard me sighing. I smiled at him
"I'll make it up to you later at your birthday." He winked and I felt my cheeks get warm. I couldn't help but smile though. Holly and Mikey were stood in silence as five different teachers stood by room 101 – where all students with detentions go. We didn't wait long for Shayne and his jocks to appear. My science teacher was there. I took my gaze away. Fuck he could make my good mood go, even if it was my birthday. We remained silent as each teacher spoke. By luck, Shayne and another jock were taken by my science teacher to go and clean the labs. Gee, Holly and two jocks were taken by another teacher to the canteen area. God I felt sorry for those two. I was singled out with Mikey and two cheerleaders and were dragged away by a sports teacher. Great, sweaty locker rooms it was for us to clean. The remaining jocks and cheerleaders were dealt with by the last two teachers.
I looked at Mikey, considering he had been punched a lot, his bruises weren't too bad. When I had asked Gee how his parents had taken it, he told me not to even go there and by the look on his face, I didn't want to push him to find out. But after speaking to Holly, turned out both had flipped at the state the two of them were in. Donald had calmed down quicker, by only taking half an hour whereas it took their mum the rest of the evening to calm down. She went all loving-mother towards the two of them just before bed, tending to their cuts and bruises. What amazes me is that neither of them got grounded for it – I daren't think what my mum would do to me if I was like those two. I'm too scared to even raise my fist and take it to someone. I nearly walked into one of the cheerleaders but Mikey steadied me. Just as I was thought. We were made to go and clean the locker rooms. It was funny to see the cheerleaders reactions, whining and complaining about their hair and nails. The teacher shouted at them and threatened to lock them in the girls locker rooms if they didn't shut up. Me and Mikey hesitantly walked into the locker rooms and waited for the teacher to leave
"Fuck, I hate these places." Mikey stared towards the showers. I touched his arm lightly
"It's ok, I'll clean the showers, and you stay here." He smiled at me. The thought of Mikey finding a badly beaten Gee in the showers of their old school, I can only imagine would give you nightmares for months. I shuddered at the thought – just seeing Gee with small cuts and a black eye made me cringe. I felt I should have done more that day to help, I really do.
For what seemed longer than an hour and both me and Mikey feeling a little dizzy from the over whelming fumes of the cleaning products, the sports teacher returned to relieve us from our cleaning duties. The two cheerleaders had gone quiet and their hair seemed a little dishevelled – they must obviously higher personal cleaners to do all of their cleaning. We walked back in silence to the office where we were signed out and free to go. We didn't have long to wait until Holly and Gee. Both seemed very pale looking
"Fuck, I am not ordering anything from the canteen, ever again." I bit my bottom lip to stop myself from laughing
"Why's that?"
"You don't want to know, fuck Frank; I can see why you're a vegetarian." I smirked at the two of them
"Aww come on, let's get away from this shithole." I took hold of Gee's arm and pulled him out of the gates and walked down the side-walk
"Was rather funny though, the jock and cheerleader we had with us, well the jock passed out and the cheerleader freaked when she saw something move." Mikey laughed
"When you say something moved."
"God knows what it was; I want to get those thoughts and the smells out of my head." Gee said shuddering
"Well, just think about the fact that it is actually a Friday and that it's Halloween." Gee smiled instantly
"You mean 'Ieroween' not Halloween." I laughed at Gee's suggestion. It sounded really catchy and funny. I loved it. I felt his arm wrap around my waist
"God, I hope you two behave tonight." Me and Gee exchanged looks and smirked before looking round at Mikey
"Ha what makes you think they ever behave Mikey." Holly giggled
"You mean you two had better behave," I retorted. Gee giggled
"Yeah you don't want to scare Ray and Bob do you?" I found myself pushed to one side as Mikey rugby tackled his brother down to the hard ground. Holly giggled and I laughed as the two brothers scrabbled around on the sidewalk
"What makes you think I'm going to be making out with Holly the whole time! You know I behave." Gee laughed even more and Holly seemed lost for a moment
"I'll behave! I'll try not to scare Bob and Ray!" Holly pleaded and tugged at Mikey. Mikey got up and I managed to pull Gee to his feet
"We're only joking, we know you two won't do anything," I said smiling at Mikey. Mikey smiled back
"Yeah especially as mum and dad are going to be there for a little while," Gee replied
"Uh tell me about it, my dad will be boring your parents with the art of cartography!" Holly said throwing her arms into the air rather dramatically. I laughed even more
"And mum will be moaning about how she isn't a people person, I do wonder at times whether they really are my parents."
"Aww come on Holly, of course they're your parents, they are cool though, funny when you're mum is going off on one." Holly smiled
"I suppose." She shrugged her shoulders and grabbed hold of Mikey's hand and I began to walk with Gee again. We walked quietly back with Holly peeling off to go home and get herself ready. Gee kissed me quickly before chasing after his brother after his brother said something about the public display of affection. I laughed and watched before running up the path to my house and to my surprise my mum was already home
"Happy Birthday!" She pulled me into a tight hug and I hugged her back. I barely had time to speak to her this morning as I was already running late
"Thanks mum." She kissed the top of my head before letting me go
"Now, go and keep yourself busy upstairs for a while, just while I get down here ready for later." She smiled and I smiled back before running into the kitchen to grab a drink and some food before running up the stairs and into my room.
Gerard's POV
I hate it when time goes by painfully slow. I've lost count of the number of times that I have looked up at the clock on my bedside table. After rugby tackling Mikey through the front door, which mum didn't take to too well, I sat and suffered by sitting in the kitchen and listened to Mikey ramble on about his day at school and surprise, surprise, it was mainly about Holly as usual – he almost sounded like a love-sick school girl. But I suppose my mum made my suffering better, by making me a cup of coffee to drink. Mikey talked for about twenty minutes, allowing me to speak every now and then whenever mum asked me a question. When mum had disappeared upstairs, both me and Mikey had raided the cupboard for a quick bite to eat before both disappearing to our rooms to change. It was Halloween and Frankie's birthday meaning he was having a fancy dress party. Whenever I had asked Mikey during the week, he had acted like a five year old child and told me it was a secret. I had pulled out my tightest skinnies that were in my wardrobe and put them on, before then finding a black shirt that was at least a size too small – but it would be a tease for Frankie, so decided to wear it. I then managed to find some white-facial powder and decided to use it. It made me look paler than already was. If you haven't guessed, I had decided to be a vampire. I found my guy-liner and relined my eyes and put some red eye-shadow on. I approved and then ran a comb through my hair so that it wasn't as messy. To try and get the time to go by quicker, I had resorted to sitting down and drawing for a while. I glanced from my clock to Frankie's birthday present. I really do hope he likes it; it's a sketch book that I had put together of many different drawings, mainly of him and me, with a few of Holly and Mikey in. As well as that I had gotten him so new guitar picks, as I know how much he loves to play Pansy. I also had a Misfits poster, which had been signed too. I looked at the clock again; 17:28. I let out a small sigh. We were due at his for six o'clock. Ray and Bob were coming too and they were being dropped here and then walking with me, Mikey my mum and my dad. I can't wait to see Frankie even if it was a few hours ago that I had last seen him. I loved him and it was his special day too. He had said that I could stay at his for the night, while everyone else went home. It had made me smile when he had said it, well whispered it, we were in maths and supposed to be doing work, but algebra isn't exactly the most fascinating subject
"GERARD! RAY AND BOB ARE HERE!" mum shouted. I jumped as she shouted. You couldn't exactly block her out
"COMING!" I put my pencil down and wondered over to my bed. I picked up Frankie's birthday present and ran up the stairs
"Hey Ray, hey B-" Ray held back his laughter as I stared at the two of them. I could guess that Ray had come as a werewolf, which was quite cool, his afro really did help him give him the look of a wolf, but I was more stunned by Bob
"Go on Way, let it out, laugh at me," Bob said sighing as Ray began to laugh. Bob had clearly come as a skeleton. He had painted his face white and black to make it look like a skull and wore black clothing which had prints of bones across. It was quite cool, put the face-paint was a shock
"Wow, nice uh face paint." I chuckled a little and Bob rolled his eyes before giving me the finger. Obviously my mum had disappeared back up the stairs
"Vampire?" Ray suggested and I nodded my head
"What is Mikey dressing up as?" Bob asked. I chuckled again
"That brother of mine has been so secretive it's unbelievable, he disappeared up to his room after telling mum about his day and hasn't reappeared since."
"I say we go find out," Ray said. Bob nodded in agreement
"Or at least sneak up on him and find out," Bob suggested. I laughed. We crept up the stairs quietly and walked down the hall to where Mikey's room was. His door was open ever so slightly. Ray did a count down on his fingers and were burst through his door but froze
"Where is he?" His room was empty, he was nowhere to be seen. His clothes he had been wearing earlier were on his floor and his bag and contents scattered everywhere. God he was getting just as bad as me when it came to keeping rooms tidy.
"ARGH!" If it was possible for your heart to jump out of your chest with fright, it most certainly would have done just now. I screamed loudly with Ray and Bob and toppled over as Bob made to run but completely misjudged his footing. Ray stood clutching his chest while my devious younger brother fell about with laughter
"MIKEY!" I managed to scream, while trying to get my heart race to slow down
"Oh man guys! That was fucking hilarious!" Mikey fell onto the floor and laughed, his eyes watering and clutching his stomach. If mum and dad weren't home I most likely would have murdered him, but I can't
"Fucking hell Mikey it maybe Halloween and all but seriously, where the fuck did you come from?!" True, all the doors along the hall apart from mum and dad's room had all been wide open, with no one inside
"I'm not stupid, I knew you'd guys try and sneak up on me," he said finally calming down. He stood back up while Ray helped me and Bob back up onto our feet. I took a look at Mikey. I could see now that his costume made him look like an Egyptian mummy. It was fairly cool and by the looks of it, he was wearing guy-liner. It suited my brother actually, considering he never really wears it
"Hey cool costume!" Ray said smiling at Mikey
"Thanks, been working on it for a while."
"Why you been so secretive, trying to show off to Holly are we?" I teased. Ray and Bob exchanged looks before smiling
"No," Mikey said clearly blushing. I giggled
"You trying to show off for Frankie?" he retorted back. I scowled at him
"Well it is his birthday and he is my boyfriend after all." At least I could admit that I loved Frankie unlike Mikey who would go all sheepish and silly whenever anyone asked him about Holly. I poked my tongue out at him
"You and Holly are an item?" Ray asked raising an eyebrow. Mikey blushed even more
"Aww little baby Way has a girlfriend," Bob teased before wondering over and high fiving Mikey. I raised an eyebrow
"Answer the question Mikey," I said
"Well," Mikey began
"Come off it! You two are forever together, hugging one another, laughing together, you talk about her non-stop every night when we get home from school and as if the hickey on the neck and the kiss in the canteen wasn't convincing then I don't know what is!" Mikey was a brilliant red
"Yeah I am going out with Holly." I smiled at him
"Thank you, now like I said earlier, you and Holly had better behaved." I ducked down behind Ray just in time as Mikey launched himself at me
"Boys we'll be leaving in five minutes and I hope Mikey and Gerard that you two aren't fighting!" mum called from the hallway
"We're not mum!" Mikey called back in an innocent tone. He turned to me and stuck his finger up before going to his wardrobe and pulling out what must be Frankie's birthday present
"Let's go downstairs and get shoes on."
"Must say Gerard, you're mum looks good in her costume," Bob said. Ray smirked. Come to think of it, I had no idea whether mum and dad would dress up and if they did what they'd dress up as. We wondered out of Mikey's room and down the stairs into the living room where both me and Mikey froze, rooted to the spot and stared at our parents.
