Chapter 5:

Once the initial clean up was complete and the shelters were raised back up to the surface Tokyo-3's civilians got their first look at the aftermath of the angel wars. The devastation to Mount Fushima and the crater and corps of the fifth angel on the outskirts of the other side of the city. Nerv's PR department decided that instead of spending huge amounts of time and money covering everything up the city and by extension the rest of Japan deserved to see the rewards of their efforts.

“This is so cool!!” Kensuke Aida exclaimed. Pointing his video camera in every direction of the damage.

“If you say so” His jock friend Toji replied.

He glanced across to their class representative Hikari Horaki “You ok class rep?” He asked

She blushed lightly at his concern before replying “I'm ok. Just worried about Shinji and Rei I guess”

“I can't believe it” Kensuke interrupted “First we got to see the evas moving out to the mobile base. Now this!!”

Toji turned back to Hikari understanding exactly what she meant because he was feeling the same way. “Don't worry class rep Shinji is pretty tough he'll make sure dat they are ok an least we know for sure they beat the damn angel” He tried his best to make her feel better.

“Yeah, I just hope they are ok and we see them at school tomorrow” Hikari replied.

“Me too” Toji added



Shinji ran into Rei on the way to school and they walked together in comfortable silence. The late night from the victory party leaving them both drained of energy. Walking into class together set the room off. Everyone throwing questions at them much in the same way when Shinji was revealed to be a pilot.

“What happened?”

“Who killed it?”

“Was anyone hurt?”

The questions were flying in fast. Shinji took a step in front of Rei in an effort to protect her which wasn't lost on Rei or Hikari and Toji.

“Alright you guys that's enough” Hikari quickly put an end to the commotion.

Shinji mouthed thank you with a nod towards the class rep and took his seat with Rei at her usual desk in front of him.

The day was progressing slowly as lunch time crawled around. “Shinji got a minute?” Toji asked

“Sure” he replied

“Come have lunch up on the roof. I need to talk to you. Ayanami can come too if she wants” Toji offered.

Shinji turned to Rei “You want to come Rei?” He asked. The use of first name shocking everyone present

“That is acceptable” Rei replied turning and heading to the roof with Shinji following.

“Dude did you see that?” Toji asked Kensuke

“I did” He replied “Surely he hasn't melted the ice-queen”

“Come on lets go” Hikari added

As the 5 students made their way to the roof and started lunch Toji pulled Shinji aside “So what's up Suzahara?” Shinji asked

“I just really have to apologise for hitting you, so ...... I'm sorry” Toji blurted out with a bow.

“It's ok Toji. I'd have been as mad as you if I was in your position” Shinji replied.

“Friends?” Toji asked

“Definitely” Shinji replied as the boys shook on it and returned to sit down and eat lunch

“Soooooooooooo?” Kensuke asked

Shinji and Rei looked at him as the question had be directed at them. “So?” Shinji asked not getting the question.

“You can't leave me hanging all day like this. What happened?” Smiles found their way onto everyone's face.

“I'm surprised you lasted this long” Toji commented

“Well sure what do you want to know about the battle?” Shinji asked

The group spent the next twenty minutes listening as Shinji answered all of Kensuke's questions, giving the military otaku as much information as he figured he was allowed. The thing is while Shinji had been debriefed on his other missions he hadn't on this one and no one had ever gone through what to do in a situation like this so he just winged it.



Shinji and Rei were walking home from school both happy to have a semblance of a normal day with no tests at Nerv till tomorrow.

“How is your new place going Rei?” Shinji asked

“It is good” Rei replied.

Thinking that while she enjoyed the new place and it certainly was a lot more comfortable than her old apartment it was still just as lonely as it had been. No visitors since she had moved in. While the victory party at Misato's was not the type of thing she was looking for at her place it did make her realise the value of company. Mostly how she enjoyed spending time with Shinji. She just didn't know what to do about it.

“Well I'll see you later Rei” Shinji said getting to her apartment block.

“See you later Shinji” Rei replied with a small smile.

The two pilots went their separate ways home.



“What are you working on Rits?” Misato asked stopping by her long time friends’ office.

“Yesterdays battle results” She replied. “How's the paperwork going?” She asked hinting at being left alone to continue on what she was working on.

“All done” Misato replied with a face splitting grin “What are you working on from yesterday? I thought everything was covered? We won after all” She asked

“Just a couple of things regarding Unit-01” Ritsuko replied

“Like what?” Misato asked now concerned, she had been realising that unit-01 had been doing some extraordinary things but now that Ritsuko was looking into it meant something else.

“The blue/white pattern that we observed near unit-01 but couldn't identify and the fact that the positron rifle recharged about 10 seconds faster than it should have” Ritsuko stated.

“What of it?” Misato still wasn't following

“Well that's the thing, I can't work out how it happened and theoretically it shouldn't even be possible. There is no way the positron rifle should have recharged between shots in 15 seconds, and the Magi haven't been able to find anything on the blue/white pattern” Ritsuko replied “and I haven't even started on how Shinji made that shot with the rifle either” She added.

“Well maybe you should talk to Shinji and Rei and see if they can offer anything. I mean they were closest to what you’re looking into, and I was talking to the Sub-Commander about Shinji's shot and he said he isn't surprised. Shinji has been going to the range a lot and he is very good he says” Misato suggested and countered at the same time.

“You know Misato you might be onto something there. Thanks” Ritsuko replied

“Errrr your welcome” Misato replied dumbstruck that she was able to help her friend with her work.

“Well I'm off. Drinks after work tomorrow?” Misato asked.

“Haven't you had enough after the party?” Ritsuko asked.

“No such thing” Misato replied in a sing song voice.

“Bye Misato” Ritsuko replied

“Buh-Bye” Misato replied heading out the door.



School continued in much the same way as normal. Boring second impact lectures that didn't have accurate details and a droning recount of the devastation reaped across the planet. Lunch was nice the 5 friends sitting on the roof again to eat. Kensuke and Toji arguing about military weapons while Rei and Hikari were eating and talking very minimally.

This left Hikari wondering how Shinji gets so much conversation out of Rei. Not that either of them seem to be a chatterbox but he seems to get some sort of conversation from the quiet girl. Just as she was looking to him about to ask him discreetly about it.

“What do you think Shinji?” Kensuke cut in

“About what?” Shinji asked

“Weren't you listening?” Kensuke asked flabbergasted. “It looked like you were”

“Well I was at the start” Shinji replied rubbing the back of his head sheepishly

“Well which plane do you think would work better in a desert battle field. The Russian YAK-2485 or the American JSF Mk.18?” He continued not being deterred by his friends’ apparent lack of interest in the conversation. “I mean come on you work for the military you have to have an opinion”

“Not really” Shinji replied

“Not really what?” Kensuke asked getting a little frustrated at his friend.

“I work for Nerv. It's not the military.....” Shinji paused a little letting that sink in “And in answer to your question I don't think either would matter. In war while good equipment helps, if you hopeless at using it or the enemy is far superior at using what they have your as good as dead anyway.” He added

The bell rang bringing an end to the conversation at least for a little bit.

“Alright gym class” Toji exclaimed happily “Come on lets go” he called out

“What have we got?” Shinji asked as they started heading to class.

“Track” Toji replied

“I hate track” Kensuke added

“Do you like running?” Toji asked Shinji

“Yeah” Shinji replied

“Come on Ayanami let’s get going” Hikari called out to Rei as they headed for the girls change rooms near the pool.

The two groups headed to their respective change rooms and Shinji found himself getting a little nervous. This would be his first gym class since he started at Tokyo-3 it was surprising it had taken this long to be at school on a gym day but not unbelievable. He was getting a little self conscious about his scars, while it never concerned him at Nerv as people always left him well enough alone even if he only had half his plug suit on when he wasn't piloting now he was worried about what his class mates would think. Particularly his new friends.

“Ikari what the hell?” A boy called out when they saw Shinji's back wracked with scars once he took his shirt off to get changed

“What?” He turned and faced the boy giving him a view of all the scars of the front of his body as well.

“What's with all the scars you freak” He replied “And your eyes” He spat seeing his face as well

“Back off” Toji yelled slamming the boy into his locker by the scruff of his shirt.

A few of the boy’s friends gathered around him menacingly ready for a fight for their friend.

Toji jumped up onto a bench “If any of you ladies have a problem wit Shinji or da way he looks then you have a problem wit me!” He exclaimed “This guy lays it on da line for you wimps every time he fights for us” He added

“Well we have a problem” Mikkie and his friends said “We don't like Ikari the big shot pilot being all smug and shit. Maybe we should take you down a peg. Bet you can't fight without the robot anyway” Mikkie added

Mikkie lunged at Shinji trying to land a punch that Shinji saw coming and easily blocked. Shinji dropped his shoulder into Mikkie's chest knocking him to the floor and holding him there by his shirt.

One of his friends ran at them trying to knock Shinji off Mikkie but before he could get a punch in Shinji grabbed him with his free hand and threw him with his momentum straight over them onto the floor next to the lockers.

Another friend made a move to help Mikkie but Toji grabbed him by the shoulder and delivered a savage punch to his stomach winding him and knocking him to the floor.

“Don't even think about moving” He said to the last friend who was just standing there fixed in a trance. He nodded his understanding with a blank face still dumbstruck

“Next time don't start something you know nothing about” Shinji said delivering a savage punch across Mikkie's face splitting his cheek open and leaving him on the floor to finish getting changed.

“Ikari. Suzahara. That's enough” Came the voice of the gym coach.

“Shit” Shinji and Toji seemed to mutter under their breath

“You two have just scored detention” Their coach replied “Now hurry up and get changed you lot” He added

The boys finished getting changed without further incident. The ease with which the whooping was handed out deterred any other would be challengers.

“Thanks for backing me up back there Toji” Shinji said as the boys were warming up

“No problem Shinji. Dats what friends are for” Toji replied.

“Just don't get yourself into trouble bailing me out next time deal?” Shinji replied

“Deal” Toji agreed.

The class continued without incident Toji winning all the races that they ran. Shinji ran a close second and seemed to actually enjoy himself in a school class for once.

“Alright dismissed” The teacher called out once the bell rang for the end of day. “Not you two” He said pointing at Shinji and Toji “Care to explain why you two have detention?” He asked

“I was backing Shinji up after Mikkie and his buddies tried to pick a fight with him” Toji explained.

“Is this true Ikari” The teacher asked

“Yes” Shinji replied

“Well that's not what I saw so you both have detention” The teacher replied.

“I can't go I have tests at Nerv” Shinji replied

“Prove it” The teacher challenged

“Call my commanding officer” Shinji said offering a piece of paper

“Alright you wait here Suzahara off to detention” The teacher said pulling out a mobile

“That's crap he didn't do anything wrong” Shinji replied

“Don't push your luck Mr. Now get going Suzahara” The teacher replied.

Toji headed to detention as the teacher rang Misato

“Captain Katsuragi here” Misato replied into her phone

“Miss Katsuragi my name is Han Akiro I'm Shinji's gym teacher. Let me cut to the chase, he got into a fight in class and has detention, but now he is telling me he has testing at Nerv he has to go to this afternoon. Now I'm just calling to inform you he will be a little late as he has detention” The teacher reeled off.

“Firstly it is Captain Katsuragi” Misato replied going from casual to captain and operations director in an instant. “And secondly Shinji is right. He does have very important testing and training at Nerv that cannot be delayed.” Misato added

“I'm sorry captain but y” The teacher was cut off

“Now you listen here. This testing is very important for Shinji and by extension you and everyone else in this city since every time he fights he is defending you and all the other people here. Now you can let Shinji go so he can come to Nerv or I can have Section-2 move in and escort him here” Misato interrupted.

“What about his punishment?” The teacher asked.

“Don't worry I'll handle that” Misato replied

“Very well” The teacher replied.

“Bye” Misato replied hanging up not waiting for the rest of the conversation

“Your captain says you are to go to Nerv and she will handle your punishment Ikari. Looks like you get off easy” The teacher replied.

“Doubt it..... Bye then” Shinji said turning to leave



Misato meat the two pilots outside the locker rooms

“We'll start with a sync test and then some combat simulation with you two working together against simulated targets of the three angels we have faced so far. We'll begin in 20 minutes” Misato stated.

“Yes ma'am” Both pilots replied almost in unison freaking Misato out a little

“Shinji have you got a minute?” Misato asked

“About 20” He replied sharing a small grin with the captain

“What happened at school today?” Misato asked

“I got into a fight with 4 other boys in the gym locker room. They were starting stuff over my scars” Shinji replied.

“Did they get detention?” Misato asked

“No the teacher walked in on the last part of it. Only Toji and I got detention” Shinji replied

“Toji. The taller boy from the eva?” Misato asked

“Yeah he was backing me up. Said that's what friends do” Shinji replied

“I see” Misato replied

“So what's my punishment?” Shinji asked a little reluctantly

“I'm not punishing you for this” Misato replied

“Thank you” Shinji replied

“Go get ready for the tests and put your plug suit on properly. Your making all the women blush around here” Misato replied as Shinji was walking away.

“Yes ma'am” He called out sarcastically



“Rei. What brings you here?” Ritsuko asked as Rei walked into her office.

“I have a question Dr. Akagi” Rei replied

“Sure what is it?” Ritsuko asked

“I've been thinking about my apartment. It's really nice but after the victory party I've realised that it is lonely there” Rei replied

Ritsuko looked flabbergasted. Where was Rei and who is this imposter that talks so much. A small smile graced her lips and the thought of teasing like Misato would crossed her mind for an instant but she dismissed it as being grossly unfair to the young pilot. “That's understandable you are there on your own all the time. Have you thought about having company or getting a pet?” She replied

“Company? Like who?” Rei replied

“Anyone. Just invite your friends over or people you get along with from Nerv” Ritsuko replied

“How is that done? I don't understand the social aspects of this” Rei replied

“Just ask whoever you want to. Do it in a way that your comfortable with and don't worry too much it's no big deal. Just invite them around for dinner or something” Ritsuko replied

“Ok. Thank you doctor” Rei replied.



The tests began with a synchronisation test.

“Alright how are we looking Maya?” Ritsuko asked

“Both pilots are at the contamination borderline. They can't go any further” Maya replied

Ritsuko looked across to the monitors showing images of the two pilots. Looks of concentration etched into their faces as they went about their work.

“How are the readings?” Misato asked

“Rei has increased again to 49% Shinji is still steady at 150%” Ritsuko replied.

“That's good. They seem to be working well together.” Misato replied. “Good sync scores and a first time out victory working together” She added

“Yes that's true” Ritsuko replied.

“Did you find what you were looking for the other day?” Misato asked

“Not yet but I have some questions once this test is over” Ritsuko replied

“Well if you’re all happy we can move on” Misato added

“I have no objections. Get the combat simulator prepped Maya” Ritsuko said finishing the test.

“All right you guys are done with the sync test” Maya spoke into a microphone

“Yes ma'am” came the two replies



“Dr. Akagi have you got a minute” Shinji asked once he was out of Unit-01 Rei by his side.

“Yes actually I had a couple of questions for both of you” Ritsuko replied

Both pilots looked at Ritsuko waiting for her to go on so she took the initiative and just started.

“We picked up a second pattern during your last fight when the positron cannon was recharging does either of you remember anything unusual?”

They both thought about it for a moment before shaking their heads.

“The thing is there are three things all centring on that time. We detected a blue/white pattern not like the angels but something different near Unit-01's position, then the positron cannon recharged ten seconds faster than it should have and then you Shinji made a near impossible shot with no targeting computer” Ritsuko elaborated hoping for something

“I can't explain any of this Dr.” Rei added first “I was concentrating on keeping the shield up to protect Unit-01 when the shield failed I remember Shinji pushing me down but after a bit everything went black”

“That was when you passed out Rei” Ritsuko added

“Well” Shinji started. “I made the shot looking down the scope of the rifle. I knew the distance to the target and factored in the earth's rotation and gravity but not wind like you said it would affect the shot.” Shinji replied

“You just made the shot on your own?” Ritsuko clarified

“Yes ma'am” Shinji replied. “As for the recharging I was just concentrating on it wanting it to go as quick as possible to protect Rei” He added

“I see” Ritsuko replied getting ideas but being a scientist that she is having to work on them to prove it for sure.

“What are you thinking Dr. Akagi?” Shinji asked

“Plenty that I have a lot to work on” Ritsuko replied “Don't worry its ok” She added seeing the concerned looks on the pilots’ faces.

“Now what can I do for you?” She asked

“Oh ah......” Shinji almost forgot what he wanted. “Weapons” Shinji exclaimed with a smile on his face

“Weapons?” Ritsuko asked

“Yeah I want to be able to carry more in a fight” Shinji replied “Being limited to one gun or a knife in a fight is a disadvantage” He added

“That's true. What do you have in mind?” Ritsuko asked now intrigued

“Well what do we have available to work with?” Shinji asked

“Pretty much anything you can think of. The pistol and pallet rifle you've used and now the positron cannon. Plus there are spears, axes, a mini gun anything you can think of” Ritsuko replied

“Well can we get a holster for the pistol plus 3 or 4 clips. The more the better. If I have nothing in my second shoulder pylon another knife would be good. Oh and a strap on the pallet rifle to carry that if it's possible. Can you do a sniper rifle that shoots ballistics?” Shinji replied

“I'll see what I can do. If you get me images or specifications on what you want if we don't have it we can work with the development guys to knock something up” Ritsuko replied

“Cool, and can it all fit both evas?” Shinji asked

“Absolutely we'll try our best” Ritsuko replied “You two better get going if you’re going to eat before your next test, can't fight on an empty stomach” She added

“Yes Dr. See you later” Both pilots replied as they headed for the cafeteria.

The two pilots sat down to plates of food in the cafeteria. Shinji devouring his like it would be his last meal for a long time, Rei just picking at hers.

“Shinji” Rei said getting the young pilots attention returned with a glance “Do you want to come over for dinner after the tests tomorrow?”

Shinji looked at her processing what was just said then it hit him. Maybe she is trying to open up a little and all the time together is starting to pay off, 'after all we are friends' he thought then replied “I'd like that”

Rei smiled and continued eating.



“Alright we're going to begin with random combat simulations, here comes the first one” Misato began

“Yes ma'am” Both pilots replied

“How do you want to do this Rei?” Shinji asked

“This is my first combat simulation. I was going to follow your lead” Rei replied

“Alright let’s get weapons” Shinji replied both evas making their way towards an armoury building.

Shinji pulled two pallet rifles and a pistol giving one pallet rifle to Rei

“Sensors indicate the angel is north of this location moving slowly towards us” Rei said through coms.

“Ok. Let’s move out” Shinji replied Sharing a quick glance with Rei through the com channel

Unit-01 took point leading with the pallet rifle in its left hand pointed straight down the street the pistol in its right pointing at the ground to the side of unit-01. Unit-00 covering unit-01 from behind on the left side.

Both Evas maintaining formation as they advanced down the street towards the angel. “100 meters to target” Rei called out

“Wait” Shinji said “We should have visual on the target but don't”

“Distance 90 meters it's closing” Rei updated again.

“Does anyone have anything on the target?” Shinji called to the bridge

“Negative. Target should be dead ahead” Maya replied

Misato and Ritsuko shared a smirk from the observation deck wondering how the two pilots were going to work it out.

“Is this normal?” Rei asked

“Yes” Shinji replied then clarified “They want us to work it out, in simulations you'll hardly get any help from command and as you go along the more you do the harder they get.”

“I see” Rei replied.

“Just keep your wits about you, expect anything and think outside the box and you will be fine” Shinji replied.

“The angel is under the street” Rei replied “It's closed to 50 meters and we still don't have visual it can't be anywhere else” She exclaimed.

Shinji grinned “That's brilliant. Let’s go kill it!” He replied

Both Evas fell back to an access platform for the subway

“Target now 80 meters. It must be crawling its moving too slow” Rei replied “How do we get down?” She asked.

“Jump through the platform. It shouldn't take our weight.” Shinji replied

“Then what?” Rei asked

“Fall into a crouch and empty your clip down the tunnel. I'll cover you” Shinji replied “On 3” Getting a nod from Rei they began

“1.2.3”

Both Evas jumped through the platform ending up waist high with the street. Rei dropped Unit-00 down into a prone position. Sensors picked up on the angel’s movement and Rei had a good fix on the third angel, opening fire she was able to use the muzzle flash to improve her aim. The angel let out an ear splitting roar blood coating the subway tunnel as all of Rei's rounds hit true.

The angel evaded by jumping up through the street raining chunks of asphalt and concrete everywhere, a cloud of dust providing some respite.

“Come on Rei the target is on the street” Shinji called out

Unit-01 jumped up onto the street and opened fire with the pallet rifle. Shinji just kept the trigger down and advanced on the angel as unit-01 caused massive destruction to the angel and surrounding area.

CLICK the pallet rifle had run empty, Shinji dropped the spent rifle crushing a parked car in the process and pulled his prog knife, the blade humming to life then dissipating out.

“What's he doing?” Misato asked no one in particular. “He must know the knife won't work unless it's activated.”

“I'm not sure” Ritsuko replied.

“Take my knife Rei” Shinji said as he jammed the knife into a building and left it there for unit-00

“On it” Rei said running to Shinji's position and taking the knife. The blade humming to life again.

The angel burst through the smoke and dust trying to take the two Evas by force and surprise. Rei delivered a savage punch to the angels shoulder knocking it onto the pavement. The angel tried to counter by charging a cross blast and raising its arms and charging its energy lances. Shinji opened fire with the pistol burying rounds into the head and chest of the angel. The core started to glow white hot as the angel went to self destruct.

Rei was ready for this though having watched all the battle footage for study.

“Oh no you don't” she cried

Lunging at the angel and driving the prog knife into the core, quickly burying the knife in up to the hilt. She started carving up through the core. The angel screaming out in pain tried one last cross blast that was countered with more rounds from Shinji's pistol. Finally Rei cut the core in half causing the angel to fall silent.

“Target has gone silent” Maya called out.

Both Evas started walking away from the dead angel. Shinji noticed a small look of satisfaction on Rei's face. They had done pretty well.

“Hit it” Misato said.

Ritsuko pushed a button on the console causing the angel to explode with all the force recorded on that first night of the angel wars. Both Evas turned around as they were walking away from the dead angel to see a massive explosion and wall of fire rapidly approaching them. Both units deployed their AT Fields in an instant in an effort to protect each other. Both pilots immediately straining to maintain their fields under the power of the explosion.

Shinji concentrated hard. Both pilots were so caught up in the battle they had forgotten it was a simulation. 'I must protect her' Shinji thought and concentrated on nothing but keeping his field up and as strong as possible

Alarms started blaring throughout the base.

“What's going on. Status?” Misato demanded

Aboa's image came up on a com window “Blue/White pattern detected again” he reported

“Give me the location” Misato said

“It's in our sector” He stated “Near unit-01 again” He added slightly panicky

“Look at this” Maya got her superiors attention

Looking at the feed from the simulator showed both Unit-00 and Unit-01 trying to hold up an AT Field under immense strain. Unit-01's field was shimmering blue and white. Unit-00 field was green.

“Look for other energy patterns” Ritsuko ordered

“Green pattern detected near Unit-00” Maya reported

“It's their AT Fields” Ritsuko murmured.

“What's it mean?” Misato asked.

“I'm not sure. We'll have to look into it” Ritsuko replied “Let’s get them out” She added

“Alright Maya dissipate the explosion and close the simulation normally. We'll finish there so Ritsuko can look into these new findings. Let’s go debrief the pilots” Misato ordered

Once the simulation was finished Misato opened a com window to both pilots “Good work you two. We have a lot of data to sort through from that one fight so we will leave it there tonight. We'll do more work in the simulator in two nights. Go get cleaned up and we can debrief.”

“Yes ma'am” both pilots replied.

“What do you make of all that?” Misato asked Ritsuko

“I'm not sure” She replied “But now I know why Shinji wants more weapons”

“More weapons?” Misato asked

“Yes things like a holster for the pistol and places to keep clips for the pistol and pallet rifle, and a strap to carry the rifle. He wants to be able to take more fire power with him, and between the two of them they use it very effectively” Ritsuko replied

“That's true. I have to admit I never thought to equip an Eva with more than one gun like that” Misato replied “What are you going to do?” She asked

“I've already started but I'm going to have as much of what he requested made up as a priority” Ritsuko replied

“Alright. I'll let him know” Misato replied. “Let’s go Maya”



Shinji and Rei were sitting at a small desk in a briefing room opposite Misato and Maya. “Firstly let me congratulate you both on a good mission. You killed the target and both made it back. Even with my sneaky little self destruct at the end.” Misato said with a smile.

“Shinji gave me good advice” Rei replied

“What was that?” Misato asked

“Expect anything and think outside the box” Rei replied

Misato raised an eye brow at Shinji and he just shrugged his shoulders.

“Well considering it was your first time in the simulator Rei you both did very well. Picking the angel being under the street in a subway tunnel was very clever” Misato commented “How did you come up with it?”

“It was Rei” Shinji supplied

“Rei” Misato said asking for an explanation

“Yes ma'am” Rei replied

Misato figured the previous sentence must have been a one off “How did you figure it out so quickly?”

“It was the most logical explanation” she replied like it was the most obvious thing ever. “The angel had closed from 100 to 50 meters down a straight wide street and we had no visual. It was not in the sky so it must have been below us” Rei replied.

“Very good Rei” Misato replied “You have both worked very well together here and also in the last battle against the fifth angel. My only criticism is your being a bit violent Shinji. This is the most collateral damage you've caused in such a short battle. Just try to be a little more aware of your surroundings”

“Yes ma'am” Shinji replied

“I know destroying the angels is our primary objective and you’re both getting very good at it but try to be aware of your surroundings. If necessary check your backgrounds when taking a shot, beware of where you’re dropping things like empty pallet rifles. Do you follow me?” Misato said enforcing her point gently

“Yes ma'am” Both pilots replied.

“Ok. Just remember you’re doing well so keep at it...... Dismissed have a good night” Misato finished

Both pilots turned to leave

“Shinji do you have an extra minute?” Misato asked before the pilots had gotten too far.

“Sure Misato” He replied turning around and standing back in front of her.

“I've been working on your requests. Are you happy so far?” She asked

“Yeah I am. Rei seems to be settling in nicely and the party seems to have had a positive effect. So all that's left is the maintenance teams moral and your continued help with protecting what's important.” Shinji replied.

“About the maintenance team” Misato began getting Shinji's undivided attention as he stripped out of the top half of his plug suit, showing of those incredibly defined muscles and scars. Misato lost her train of thought at the sight of the scars but recovered quick enough.

“I was thinking a uniform specific for each repair crew. Kind of like a way to give them a sense of belonging to a team or unit, not just turn up for a shitty job that no one likes. We can do the uniforms by seniority and have the colours in the same finish as the Evas. How does that sound?” Misato finished

Shinji thought on it for a second “Sounds great Misato. When can we start on it?” He replied.

“I've already had the proposal approved I'm just waiting on final designs to show you and well get them put together” Misato replied a smile growing across her face.

“Great. Just don't make mine all purple” Shinji replied.

“I wouldn't dream of it. Now go get showered before that LCL becomes permanent” Misato replied.

Shinji didn't need to be asked twice heading straight for the locker rooms.



School continued on as normal. Shinji hating classes but enjoying the time he got to spend with his new friends. Lunch was quickly becoming the highlight of the day enjoying the company of his friends and seeing how much Toji could eat was always entertaining.

Shinji and Rei headed to Nerv for more testing, Rei seemed nervous to Shinji though no one would be able to pick it he was right. The blue haired pilot was worried her plans would not go well.

“We're still on for tonight?” Shinji blurted out trying to ease his friend’s tension

“Yes” She smiled slightly hearing the question.

“What's the plan?” Shinji asked

Rei was getting better at understanding slang and general terms in conversation, she had a way to go but spending time around Shinji she was getting a feel for what he meant most of the time.

“I'm cooking stir-fried rice and vegetables” She replied.

“That sounds great” Shinji replied

Suddenly Rei didn't feel so nervous after Shinji's encouraging words.

“Do you know what testing we have today?” Rei asked

“No. I just take what I'm told to do when we get in. I haven't thought to look at the schedule in the locker rooms” Shinji replied.

The two continued on in silence comfortable in each others company.



Meeting up with Misato, Ritsuko and Maya in the briefing room the testing schedule was laid out for the pilots.

“Alright well skip the synchronisation testing today for more time in the simulator” Misato stated “You're not going to get any help from us today and sometimes we will be disabling your sensors to simulate system failures. Also the angels will be getting harder as you go along. We're going to push you guys hard today” Misato and the others looked at the reaction of the pilots and got nothing.

Rei wasn't fazed at all and nothing changed with Shinji accept for a hardening look that made its way into his eyes.

“Good luck and just remember what we spoke about last time” Misato finished

The first simulation loaded and both pilots found themselves on opposite sides of Tokyo-3.

A com window opened between the two evas “Sensors indicate the Angel is between us in the centre of the city” Rei stated.

“I've got the same” Shinji replied.

“How do you want to meet up?” “We should meet up” Was spoken at exactly the same time by the two pilots.

“That was a little scary” Misato commented from the observation deck.

“At least they are on the same page” Ritsuko added as the three women continued monitoring the simulation.

“Alright, circle around the target to the south. I'll do the same, there are some large high rises we can use for cover in that area of the city.” Shinji said

“Alright. Unit-00 moving out” Rei replied

“Unit-01 moving out” Shinji replied

Both Evas headed to the south side of the city using stealth as much as possible when you’re piloting a giant robot. Meeting up at an armoury the hatch opened showing an assortment of weapons. Rei grabbed a pair of rocket launchers and Shinji a mini gun, he also jammed a pistol between his hip and the mini gun.

The two pilots got the jump on the angel approaching it from behind down a long street. It was the fourth angel slithering along the wide street.

“I have a fix on the target” Rei called out.

Shinji crouched down on a knee “Take the shot nail it” He replied

Rei unleashed two rounds from each rocket launcher. The rockets flying true and straight at the core and head of the angel. The noise of the approaching rockets got the angels attention and as it turned around the rockets impacted striking the head and core destroying the angel. A massive explosion engulfing the area. Blood and bits of angel covering the surrounding buildings.

“I'll be dammed” Shinji commented “You've killed it nice shot Rei”

“Thank you” Rei replied allowing herself a small smile and satisfaction of the days first kill.

In the observation deck Maya did well not to lose her lunch

“Gross Ritsuko did you have to make it so gory when it explodes” Misato commented

“All part of the simulation” Ritsuko replied. “Start the next phase Maya” She ordered

“Yes Sempai” Maya replied returning to all business

“Something is wrong” Rei expressed her concerns

“Yeah your right. Stay sharp” Shinji replied

Both pilots scanning the area but what happened next no one could predict. The fifth angel burst from a large skyscraper changing shape and starting a massive energy build up.

“Take cover” Shinji yelled turning towards Unit-00 and diving down an alley way taking Unit-00 with him just as the angel unleashed a particle beam destroying the area where both Evas were a moment ago.

“That was close” Shinji commented.

“How are we going to stop it?” Rei asked

“I don't know without the positron rifle” Shinji replied

“It's moving towards us lets go” Rei called out

Both Evas trying their best to put some distance between themselves and the angel.

“This isn't going to work” Shinji commented getting Rei attention. “We were on opposite sides of the city with the positron cannon before and we don't even have that this time” He added

“Lets get close in under the beam” Rei suggested

“We need to split up. One to distract and the other to attack” Shinji suggested.

“I'll distract” Rei volunteered.

“No” Shinji cut in. “I can't kill it with these guns. They will be useless against this angel” He added “You might have a chance”

“Alright” Rei replied not liking this idea but they had nothing else to go with.

The two Evas split up. Rei taking cover in the middle of 4 large skyscrapers. Shinji headed away from her position and popped up above the level of the smaller city buildings and fired a long burst from the mini gun at the angel.

'This gun is crazy' He thought as hundreds of rounds streaked towards the angel having the desired effect as the angel changed course and closed in on Shinji and started charging another energy shot. Shinji continued firing running the mini gun dry and having no effect on the angel.

The angel returned fire with a massive energy beam barely missing Shinji and destroying the buildings in the background. Shinji rose up again and fired two rounds from the pistol watching them both hit the angels AT Filed seeing it shimmer as the rounds hit it. The angel returned fire again with a bigger energy beam.

The beam streaked towards Unit-01 and split into two smaller beams as it got close, the two halves circling around from either side cutting off Unit-01's avenues for escape.

“Do you have a shot Rei?” Shinji asked

“Yes. Firing now” Rei replied

Unit-00 raised both rocket launchers at the angel that was hovering directly over head, pulling the triggers it rained round after round down on the angel causing minimal damage. With only two rounds left Rei could only see a tiny hole in the armour of the angel. The angel started moving again to intercept Unit-01 after being distracted and letting its opportunity slip.

Rei fired one round at a skyscraper knocking it down. The building blocking the path of the angel and it stopped. She then closed the distance to the angel and pushed the barrel of the rocket launcher into the hole in the body of the angel that she had made earlier. Sensing danger the angel started charging and energy beam but it was too late by then. Rei went point blank on the core destroying the angel in a massive fiery explosion.

With that the simulation ended

“Good kill Rei” Shinji commented over the com window.

“Thank you” She replied. “I couldn't have done it without you though” She added

“Good work you two your working well together” Misato commented “Ready to go again?”

“Yes ma'am” Both pilots replied.

The simulations continued for a few more hours. Shinji and Rei continued to work well together killing everything that was laid before them. Neither one keeping score of who killed what but they were starting to rack up some impressive numbers.

“They are both still undefeated in the simulator” Maya commented

“Yes it's got to be good for their confidence at least” Ritsuko added

“And neither seems to be getting cocky either which is good. Misato said she opened a com window to both pilots.

“Alright that's all for tonight. You've both done very well. Go get cleaned up and we’ll see you in the briefing room” She ordered

“Yes ma'am” Came the reply



“You've both done very well in the simulator” Misato began not getting any reaction out of her pilots “You can have the rest of the week off. Ritsuko and I have to go to a weapons demonstration so we will start up the testing next Monday. Make sure you’re well rested by then” She finished

“Yes ma'am” Both pilots replied.

“Good work dismissed” Misato finished

Rei nodded. “Thank you” Shinji responded with a nod

“Ready to go Rei?” Shinji asked.

“Yes” She replied as both pilots started heading to her apartment.



“Wow Rei this is a nice place” Shinji commented once they walked inside her apartment. “Way better than those other ones we were in” He added

“Yes it is” Rei replied a smile gracing her face. She was genuinely happy that she had company tonight.

Shinji was happy to be there and happy to see that his friend was happy. Misato had gone on a tease feast once she found out what was going on. Insinuating all kinds of things about a first date and “not to do anything she wouldn't do” to which Shinji replied “Options open then Captain” knowing he wasn't going to get away with the final word on that one he was dreading returning home after dinner but that was a ways away yet.

The sounds of Rei cooking brought Shinji out of his thoughts. The aroma of cooked rice and fresh vegetables filling the apartment.

“This smells great Rei” Shinji commented

“Thank you it is almost ready” She replied.

Rei had spent a great deal of time reading up on what is expected when one has friends over for dinner. Everything had been planned painstakingly and so far everything had gone fine, but Rei was still worried that Shinji would not like the food.

'Perhaps this was a bad idea' she thought.

Shinji picking up on Rei's uneasiness “Don't worry Rei you can pilot a massive war machine capable of all kinds of destruction in the name of saving humanity. I'm sure you can manage dinner”

Rei smiled at the comment that was so simple “Yes that's true” She replied and with that her nervousness washed away.

Dinner went down a treat and ice-cream Shinji brought for dessert was a win. All of Rei's studies had paid off. Shinji left with both pilots having enjoyed each other’s company and the night. Their friendship growing with every interaction be it school, work or hanging out like this.

“Sooooooooooooo Shinji, did you explore your options with Rei?” Misato asked before the young pilot even had his shoes off

“Do I need to have a chat about pregnancy with you, or Rei for that matter?” She continued teasing. A massive grin on her face she was enjoying every minute of this.

“Gaah Misato!” Shinji exclaimed trying his best to ignore the teasing which proved futile.

Misato's grin got even bigger with victory

“I'm going to bed. Good night Misato” Shinji replied trying his best to get out of there.

“Good night Shinji. Sweet dreams............. Of Rei” Misato replied

Shinji just slapped his fore head with his palm as he was heading to his room muttering something about never crossing women who tease so viciously.

He awoke the next morning finding Misato up and ready for work already. She was wearing her usual red bomber jacket but instead of her usual attire had the same dress from when she picked him up on the first day he came to Tokyo-3. Repaired of course, and her barrette.

“Hi Misato. You look great” Shinji complimented

“Hi Shinji. Thanks” Misato replied. “I'm off to the weapons demonstration the next two days. I'll be home late tomorrow night. Take it easy and get some rest while I'm gone and don't forget school” She listed off for Shinji

“Sure thing Misato” Shinji replied

“I'm off. Oh and before I forget your new uniforms will be ready next week. Rei's and all the maintenance teams too” She added

“Ok. Have a good trip” Shinji replied.



The first day passed as normal. Shinji went to school and came home. Got bored with homework so he headed to Nerv and hit up the gym and shooting range. Practice makes perfect after all.

The weapons demonstration started out ok. A lot of presentations and explanations on the theory of this thing called Jet-Alone. It was meant to be a direct replacement for the Evas. Misato and Ritsuko barely made it through the day it was so boring. Sharing a drink at a bar at the end of the day the two friends came to the conclusion that the open forum and demonstration would have to be more interesting tomorrow.



The open discussion had started out ok. There were a few insults and barbs directed at Nerv and the Evas. The main gripe centred on the use of children in combat and how unpredictable the eva can be.

“How is that even going to be feasible?” Ritsuko spoke up to a statement about the operation time of the Jet-Alone robot

“Jet-Alone has a nuclear reactor installed into the centre of the torso allowing for greater operational times of up to 150 days” The presenter replied smugly. “There is no point in a weapon that can only last for five minutes” He added

“The operational time of the Eva is more than five minutes, and may I point out that the Eva is not on trial here” Ritsuko rebutted. “Either way isn't it risky incorporating a nuclear reactor in a weapon made for hand to hand combat?” She finished.

“Not yet” Smirked the presenter. “Once Jet-Alone is proven to be superior to the Evangelion after the demonstration that may not be the case.” He added

“What weapons does Jet-Alone carry” She asked choosing not to dignify the last response with an answer.

“The weapons are classified however the demonstration will show some of the fire power Jet-Alone is capable of” The presenter replied

“Figures” Ritsuko mumbled to herself “It also states here that Jet-Alone doesn't use an AT Field. How do you plan to breach the angel’s defences?” Ritsuko pressed on getting about as annoyed as Misato at this point.

“All will be revealed in the demonstration Dr. Akagi” The presenter replied “Also we will show how Jet-Alone is superior to the Evangelion in every aspect. The need for them will be redundant. Those pilots will not be needed and the citizens of Tokyo-3 can get back to living safe lives without having to worry about property destruction or blackouts”

“I look forward to it” Ritsuko replied



“Ohhhh that smug little ass hole” Misato screamed as she punched and kicked a locker “It took all my self control not to pull my gun and shoot him.” She added

“Take it easy Misato” Ritsuko replied

“Weren't you getting mad?” Misato asked

“Of course I was Misato” Ritsuko replied “He was making a direct attack on my work and the children” She added.

“What do you want to do about it?” Misato asked

“Nothing. He's petty, not worthy of attention. The proof will be in the demonstration. There is no way Jet-Alone can match the Eva’s effectiveness in combat against the angels” She replied

“How did classified information get out like that as well? Intelligence must be dragging its arse” Misato replied “Still I'd like to see Shinji in Unit-01 face off against that thing” She added

Both women smiled at that image of Unit-01 going to town on the hapless Jet-Alone filling their minds



Everyone was gathered in a large viewing room. Misato and Ritsuko standing at the back. A large viewing screen came up showing Jet-Alone docked in a holding bay.

“You attention ladies and gentlemen the demonstration will begin momentarily” The presenter announced.

Some muttering was heard in the crowd and behind the lectern. After a slight delay a technician could be heard giving the all clear.

“Ladies and gentlemen we will now begin the demonstration” Announced the presenter proudly

All eyes turned to the viewing window and the large display

“Engaging walk cycle” One technician reported.

“Left foot forward ahead slow” Another reported

“Right foot forward ahead slow” Came a third report

This continued as Jet-Alone took its first steps for the public. “Amazing isn't it ladies and gentlemen. It's like watching a child take its first steps. But without the falls” The presenter announced. The jib towards unit-01 was not lost on Misato and Ritsuko. Both women silently fuming.

“Something is wrong” A technician reported to the presenter.

Some murmurs and hushed words followed. No one in the room could tell what was being said. Misato and Ritsuko's trained eyes picked up that there was obviously a problem, a serious one by the looks of the commotion taking place at the control terminals.

“What do you mean it's not responding!!” The presenter said in a heated voice at a technician. The reply wasn't heard

“Well activate the fail safes” He barked the reply was not heard again but the presenter moved back to the lectern.

“Ladies and gentlemen your attention please. There has been a minor malfunction with Jet-Alone. We will continue the demonstration shortly” He announced

A massive shock wave hit the presentation area shaking light fittings and wobbling glasses. A loud crack followed. Then it dawned on Misato what was going on.

“Everybody get down” She screamed. Grabbing Ritsuko and dragging her to the side of the room, just in time too as Jet-Alone's massive foot came crushing down through the ceiling, flattening everything caught under it. Fortunately no one was injured.

“You ok?” Misato asked Ritsuko

“I'm fine” Ritsuko replied

“Come on. Lets go find out what the hell has gone wrong” Misato said

The two women made their way to the command deck where all the consoles and technicians were located.

“What's going on?” Misato asked

“Excuse me ladies this is a restricted area. I have to ask you to leave” The presenter stated with as much authority as he could muster, holding up his hand to stop the approaching women. Misato just reached out and grabbed his hand twisting it over his wrist and then elbow, several cracks could be heard dropping the presenter to his knees with a cry.

“Ahhhh.............. Why would you do that?” He whimpered

“Who's in charge here? Give me a situation report” Misato ordered

“Why should we you don't have jurisdiction” Came the reply

“Actually Nerv has jurisdiction our authority extends to protecting mankind from all threats not just the angels, now give me a situation report” Misato ordered

“Jet-Alone is unresponsive to any of our commands” A technician replied “We can't control it”

“What's the status of the reactor?” Misato asked

“It's steady for now” Came the reply

“What's its course and speed?” Misato asked

“It's heading towards Mabeshi at 20kilometers per hour” Came the reply

“You only have one hour till it hits the city” Ritsuko whispered in Misato's ear to which the lavender haired captain nodded and smiled her thanks at her friend for knowing her next question.

Misato pulled out her phone “Hello Maya....... I need you to prep Unit-01 and have it and Shinji ready for air transport to Jet-Alone its gone rogue........... Thank you”

“Your not going to intercept it with Unit-01 are you?” Ritsuko asked

“Only if I have to. But that's plan B” Misato replied

Turning to the technician again “Do you have any radiation suits?” She asked

“Yes they are in the hangers near here” Came the reply

“What else do I need to shut down Jet-Alone manually?” Misato asked

“The over ride password, nothing else” Came the reply

“Don't bother” Interrupted the presenter’s voice from the floor. “I'm the only one who can give it to you and I can't authorise that”

Misato dragged him to his feet by the scruff of his shirt. “Then get the authorisation and make it happen”

“Come on Ritsuko lets go to the chopper” Misato replied leaving with Ritsuko following



Shinji's phone rang waking him from his almost slumber as the teacher droned on about second impact. Seeing the number he picked it up “Misato” He whispered. Misato started talking explaining the situation briefly.

“Alright I'm on my way” He whispered again

He stood up packed his bags quietly apologised to Hikari and ran out.

“What do you think is going on?” Kensuke asked Toji

“I have no idea. Guess we'll find out when da alarms go off” Toji replied



Sitting in the back of the transport plane Misato was going through the crazy plan to have Shinji drop her onto the back of Jet-Alone using Unit-01 and then hold the giant robot in place so Misato could deactivate it inside. Ritsuko continued to protest along the science lines saying it's not possible for Misato to achieve this.

“We have to try” Misato countered

“It's too dangerous” Shinji piped in

“Don't worry Shinji. Unit-01 can easily survive a nuclear blast, the armour can handle the explosion and the fallout from the radiation, even if the reactor in Jet-Alone goes critical” Misato replied

“Not for me. YOU!!” Shinji replied

Misato was taken aback by this but pressed on with her plan “Look we have to try otherwise everyone in that city could die if Jet-Alone makes it there and goes critical” Misato replied. “Maya is monitoring from the base the situation has been getting progressively worse inside Jet-Alone. We have to try” She added

“Fine but if anything looks like going wrong I'm getting you out of there” Shinji replied.

“Huga once we are clear get yourself to a safe height and monitor the situation with Ritsuko from up there” Misato ordered

“Yes ma'am” came the reply.

Pulling out her phone Misato dialled the number for Jet-Alone command centre “Have you got the password?” She asked

“H O P E” was the reply

“Let's go” She ordered snapping the phone shut



Docked on the back of the transport plane Shinji was going over the pre launch check list with Makoto.

“Everything looks fine Shinji. I'll count you in once were over the drop zone” Makoto said

“Thanks” Replied Shinji checking over all his gauges seeing readings in the green and then glancing across at Misato cradled in Unit-01's giant hand. Everything was ready, but something felt different this time. Then he noticed it a pistol was on his right hip and 6 clips in two groups of three on his legs. 'Ritsuko really came through' He thought.

“We're over the drop zone.” Makoto responded

“Docking release” Misato ordered

“Roger” Shinji replied

Unit-01 slid away from the carrier rails going into free fall, flying momentarily before landing and skidding along the dirt on its feet. Shinji could feel everything around him the dirt under his feet, the splash of the rain on Unit-01's face and shoulders. Taking off in a sprint holding Misato in one hand Shinji quickly closed the distance on Jet-Alone.

“Ibuki here I've linked into Jet-Alone and can monitor systems” Maya came in through a com window.

“Can you shut it down?” Misato asked

“No. I can only monitor” Maya replied.

“Damn” Misato muttered.

“Jet-Alone has activated proximity sensors. It's picked you up and classified you as a threat, it's become aware” Maya reported.

“Proximity sensors?” Misato asked “No one said anything about that in the presentations” She added

“Counter measures being activated” Maya informed

Shinji spun Unit-01 and started putting space between himself and Jet-Alone. Looking over his shoulder as he ran he could see Jet-Alone turning to engage him.

“What do you think you’re doing Shinji?” Misato barked, not liking that the objective they were so close to was getting further away.

“Saving you” Came the reply.

“Missiles incoming” Maya reported

Stealing a peak showed a trio of rockets tracking straight at Unit-01. Shinji put Unit-01 into a crouch with his palm facing up on the ground.

“Take cover Misato” Shinji said

“It's the desert. Where do you want me to go?” Misato retorted.

“Behind Unit-01 I'll use my AT Field to protect you” Shinji replied.

Misato got 5 Metres behind Unit-01.

“Spreading AT Field to maximum” Shinji reported

Not having enough time to turn around Shinji Spread the field between himself and Misato protecting the Captain. Two of the missiles impacted on Unit-01's back, the third hitting the AT Field above where Misato was standing.

“Whoa” Misato let out a gasp at the site of Unit-01 being knocked onto its stomach but keeping the field up, which was shimmering an orange hexagonal pattern from the impact. “Are you ok Shinji?” She asked

“I'm fine” He grunted out.

“Jet-Alone is engaging cannons. Watch out!” Maya warned.

Flipping Unit-01 off the ground with its hands and doing a somersault landing on his feet facing Jet-Alone over Misato Shinji deployed the AT Field again. Hundreds of round flying at Unit-01 from two shoulder mounted cannons that had opened up, every round hit the AT Field impacting harmlessly. The filed glowing orange and shimmering where each round hit.

“You ok Shinji?” Misato asked.

“I'm fine. Just move back a bit and I'll return fire once it reloads, wouldn't want you to catch a shell case” Shinji replied with half a grin.

Jet-Alone continued firing until the cannons whirred and they were empty. Crouching on one knee Shinji drew the pistol and lined up Jet-Alone through the sites. Firing off three quick rounds that hit the head and then another three that hit the top of the chest. The massive depleted uranium rounds blew huge holes in Jet-Alone. Some of the wounds leaking steam.

“Good hits Jet-Alone is at 75% capacity after that attack” Maya reported.

“This is taking too long I've only got 2 minutes left on battery” Shinji replied.

“Take it down hard Shinji. Just be careful of the reactor in the centre of the chest area.” Misato ordered

“Sure thing” Shinji replied.

Jet-Alone opened fire with a hand cannon and flame thrower mounted on the two forearms. Shinji raised the AT Field again easily blocking the large rounds from the hand cannon. The flame thrower looked impressive but didn't have the range to reach Unit-01. Stopping firing on the hand cannon Jet-Alone started advancing on Unit-01.

“Jet-Alone is reloading the hand cannon” Maya reported.

Shinji raised the pistol again and fired a round at the flame thrower. The round impacting with the end of the flame thrower causing a massive explosion that moved all the way up the arm in segments finishing in a massive explosion that blew the arm clean off leaving Jet-Alone leaking hydrologic fluid from the joint.

“Jet-Alone is shutting down right arm support. Keep going Shinji” Maya reported.

Shinji loaded another clip and broke into a sprint closing the distance to Jet-Alone rapidly. He emptied the entire clip rapidly burying rounds into Jet-Alone's head, chest and shoulders. He loaded another clip and put the pistol back in its holster, then opened the shoulder pylon and pulling out a progressive knife. Delivering a savage kick that floored Jet-Alone he burred the knife into the top of Jet-Alone's chest all the way through to the ground pinning Jet-Alone to the ground.

Jet-Alone reached up to grab Unit-01 but Shinji just grabbed the limb and twisted it at an unnatural angle, screeching metal indicating that the limb was now useless. He then pulled his second progressive knife from his other shoulder pylon and buried it into Jet-Alone's neck cutting a deep gouge into the neck cutting the main control computer from the body without realising it.

“Target has gone silent” Maya reported

Shinji stood up to look at his handy work. '45 seconds left' he noticed looking at his display.

Then Jet-Alone reactivated its two shoulder cannons deploying and lining Unit-01 up. Shinji was faster though drawing the pistol and emptying another clip into Jet-Alone.

“Target destroyed” Maya reported.

“Are you sure?” Misato asked for clarification

“Positive the main control computer has been destroyed” Maya responded

Shinji put Unit-01's foot onto the chest of Jet-Alone crushing some of the armour in the process and pulled his two progressive knives and put them back in the shoulder pylons before walking over to Misato crouching down and ejecting the entry plug with the last of the remaining battery power in Unit-01.

“Nice work kiddo” Misato said with a warm smile once Shinji got out of the entry plug.

“Thanks” he replied

The two were happy to sit and chat until the retrieval crews came for Unit-01 to take them all back to Nerv. Both enjoying each other’s company.

'It's funny how much things can change' Shinji thought about his guardian.

If someone had told him he would be thinking of his commanding officer as a friend and someone he can trust a few weeks ago he would not have believed it.



The trip back to Nerv had been straight forward. The carrier had headed straight to headquarters, Misato was picked up by a Nerv VTOL and once Unit-01 had new batteries Shinji was able to get it to the city limits easily enough and get external power to make it back to headquarters.

“Shinji you got a minute?” Misato asked once the young pilot was out of the entry plug.

“Sure. What's up Misato?” He asked

“I've had a request from Public Relations. They want you to do an interview on the Jet-Alone incident” She looked at him to gauge his reaction but got nothing. “I said I'd ask but it's up to you?” She added

“Alright but I don't want to do it live” He replied.

“What do you mean?” She asked

“Can't we just do it how we want to and let it be broadcast later?” Shinji replied.

“Yeah we can do it like that. Not until your uniform gets delivered either” She replied.

“Alright. So who wants to do the interview?” Shinji asked

“We'll pick someone and let you know” Misato replied.

“Alright. I'm going to get a shower” Shinji replied.



Shinji ran into Rei on his way home. The two pilots walking home together enjoying each other’s company. “How are you Shinji?” Rei asked getting her friends attention

“I'm ok” Shinji replied “How about you?” He asked

“I am well” She replied.

The rain that had been falling since the Jet-Alone incident had gotten increasingly heavier. “Do you want to come in? It's raining heavy” Rei asked as they got to her apartment

“I'd like that” Shinji replied

Once inside both pilots dried off Shinji took a seat at the kitchen table as Rei brought water for them both.

“How is your eye sight?” She asked knowing what she wanted to say but not knowing how to get there she decided to start with this.

Shinji looked for a minute not sure what was going on. Every now and then he noticed Rei was changing, she was starting to open up and talk more, a smile directed at him here and there when she was happy, some emotions flicking across her face and in her eyes. Now all he saw was concern which prompted to answer her question.

“They are ok. It hasn't gotten any worse since the S2 was installed” Shinji replied.

“That's good. Do you think the S2 is working?” She asked

“Yeah it is” Shinji replied

“Really?” Rei replied looking a little shocked.

“Yeah. Let me show you” Shinji replied

Walking over to the kitchen draw and pulling out a knife. He sat back down at the table and put his hand out palm down. He took the knife and dragged the point across the back of his hand. Rei let out a gasp seeing the trail of red blood following the knife across Shinji's hand. She reached out to grab his hand.

“Just wait. It's ok” Shinji said calming her.

Rei looked on as a long cut across the back of Shinji's hand stopped bleeding and then very slowly closed up leaving no mark at all.

“Amazing huh” Shinji said “I noticed it when I was in solitary confinement” He added

“There is something you should know.” Rei said “I.....I.....I....” “It's ok, you don't have to say anything you don't want” Shinji interrupted seeing her hesitation

“I'm worried we won't be friends after this” Rei replied.

“We will always be friends” Shinji replied “Promise” He added

“I....” She paused for a deep breath “Have an S2 organ like you” She got out

Shinji looked surprised by this “That's ok, why would it make me not want to be your friend?” He asked

“Because I didn't tell you when you were struggling with your own decision” Rei replied

“That never would” Shinji replied “You helped support me when I was making that decision. I couldn't ask for anything else” He replied.

Rei smiled at this “Really?”

“Definitely. I promise” Shinji replied

The two pilots enjoyed each other’s company until the rain eased up and Shinji went home.

“Hi Shinji. Where have you been?” Misato asked with a deadly grin as Shinji walked through the front door.

“At Rei's” Came the reply.

“Ohhh another date” She probed.

“No” Shinji replied “It's not like that we're just friends” He added

This made no difference though and teasing ensured for the rest of the night.
