Chapter 6:

Shinji stood proudly by Nerv's helipad at the navy docks in his new uniform. He and Rei had both received theirs that morning just in time for an important trip Misato said they had to go on. Both pilots wore the formal uniform, black dress pants for Shinji and a black dress skirt for Rei, a white button up shirt for Shinji and a white button up blouse for Rei. The only difference in colours was the jacket Shinji's black jacket had Unit-01's bright green used in the embroidery where Rei's used Unit-00's blue. Both had Nerv's insignia on the right chest. The left side had their pilot wings.

Shinji decided the left shoulder was his favourite part, Unit-01's head shape as a skull with crossed bones under it and Unit-01 written under that as a patch. The right shoulder had the Japanese flag. Rei's had Unit-00's head instead. They were presented with the jackets moments ago. The head of the maintenance teams received their personalised jackets matching the colours of the pilots but not as formal. Uniforms were given to all the maintenance teams, and Shinji and Rei also received cargo pants and bomber jackets with matching colours to compliment their dress uniforms. Topping everything off was blue barrettes and all in all Nerv's pilots looked very sharp. A sentiment conveyed by their captain.

“You two certainly look very sharp today..... Such a lovely couple” Misato complimented and added a tease in for good measure.

“Thank you captain” Both pilots replied.

Misato cringed at this “Alright alright I'll lay off the teasing for a little bit” She replied.

“Thanks Misato” Shinji replied. Rei just nodded.

“So what exactly are we doing here?” Shinji asked

“Your interview, and then a little flight in a helicopter” Misato replied.

“Ok. So who's doing the interview?” Shinji asked.

“Someone with a website about the Evas, they will have exclusive rights and will stream with interview once the PR guys have okayed it.” Misato replied “Don't worry it will be nice and casual” She added seeing Shinji's reaction.

Shinji just nodded.

“Don't worry Shinji, we will be ok” Came the soft voice of his co-pilot.

“We?” Shinji asked a little confused.

“Yes. We.” Rei replied “Captain Katsuragi thought we should do the interview together”

“You're ok with this?” Shinji asked

“Yes” Came the soft reply.

“Great” Shinji replied breathing a sigh of relief.

Suddenly the interview didn't sound so bad.

“Right this way you two. The interviewer is just through here” Misato ushered the two pilots towards a makeshift marquee with a table and chairs and a white backdrop behind it.

“Hi guys” Came the voice of the interviewer.

He had his back turned to the two pilots focusing on setting up the camera for the interview. Shinji couldn't place the voice but seemed at ease all of a sudden. Shinji and Rei sat down at the table. Then the interviewer popped up from behind the camera. “Are you guys ready?”

“Kensuke?” Shinji asked puzzled “Yes” Came Rei's soft reply.

Suddenly this interview seemed really good.
“Alright lets get started” Kensuke exclaimed enthusiastically.

Both pilots nodded to this and Kensuke began recording.

“This is Kensuke Aida for eva.co.jp reporting with the two pilots of Nerv’s Evangelions after three successful missions against the angels and another against a rogue Jet-Alone. I'm here with the pilots of Unit-01 Shinji Ikari and Unit-00 Rei Ayanami. How are you both today?” Kensuke began.

“We are well” Shinji replied.

“Thank you for having us” Rei added.

“The pleasure is all mine believe me” Kensuke replied.

“Now there are three recorded angel kills but only one body has been left behind, if you could call it that. Can you explain why and offer some information on the missions so far?” Kensuke asked.

“The first two angels to attack were destroyed in the fight and you can see the remains of the third after the most recent fight against the angels.” Rei replied.

“What happened in those missions?” Kensuke asked.

“Most of that information is classified but Shinji killed the first two in hand to hand combat and the third was destroyed by both of us using a long range sniper shot” Rei replied again.

“I see.” Kensuke replied “And do all the angels look the same?”

“No they have all looked different so far and have had different abilities” Shinji replied this time.

“Like what?” Kensuke asked

“The last angel was able to generate a particle beam to fire at us” Shinji replied.

“Wow that sounds dangerous” Kensuke commented.

“Yes it is very” Rei replied

“So can you tell us about the weapons that you use fighting the angels?” Kensuke asked.

“Yes, there are a range of ballistic weapons, rocket launchers, energy weapons and the progressive knife and other hand to hand weapons. Plus the research division is always working on new weapons for us” Rei replied.

“So who has the most kills?” Kensuke continued

“I'm not sure I haven't been counting” Shinji replied.

“That's you Shinji” Rei corrected. “Shinji has two kills and we have one together, plus Shinji stopped Jet-Alone” Rei added with a smile on her face.

“Yes that brings me to that most unfortunate accident, you did very well to stop Jet-Alone Shinji” Kensuke commented.

“Thank you” Shinji replied.

“How was it fighting what was really the Evas competition?” Kensuke asked

“It was ok I guess. The main thing was that we saved all those people who were in danger if the reactor had gone critical” Shinji replied.

“Well you certainly showed the Evas superiority in that fight, and don't worry folks if you’re not sure of what happened we have all the highlights from that fight right after this interview.” Kensuke stated

“I know your both very busy so let me finish with how great you both look in your uniforms and thank you for your time” Kensuke finished

“You're welcome” Both pilots replied.

“Take care you two. Well that's it for now folks please enjoy the footage after the interview of the Jet-Alone incident and until next time this is Kensuke Aida for eva.co.jp Goodnight” Kensuke finished

“Thanks guys that was great stuff” Kensuke finished and began the task of packing up all his camera equipment.

“Nice work you two, I'll see you outside in a bit” Misato replied. “Now Mr Aida” Misato said getting Kensuke's attention “The interview is finished so don't point the camera at my pilots any more, but your free to film whatever else you want while we are on this trip”

Kensuke's face lit up at this “Wow really that's so cool, thank you Miss Katsuragi” He replied

“That's ok, think of it as an apology for putting you and Toji in solitary. Now lets go” Misato replied



“Alright Misato you've got us all in here want to tell us where we are going?” Shinji asked through his head set.

Nerv’s two pilots sat next to each other, opposite them was two of their class mates Toji and Kensuke. Kensuke's day had gone from great when he got to interview Nervs two pilots for a press release for his web site to incredible when he found out he would be going for a joy flight with them and Toji as well.

“We're just heading for a boat ride down there” Misato said pointing out the window

“COOL COOOL COOL totally awesome, this is so cool!!!” Kensuke just couldn't contain his excitement. “That's the UN Super carrier Over The Rainbow, and look at all those battle ships and cruisers, and a couple of subs. This is so cool”

Toji was sitting next to his friend drooling over Misato

“Thanks for bring us on this trip Misato-San. We really appreciate it, and I brought this cap especially for today just for you. I'll never take it off” Toji said

“That's no problem Toji” Misato replied.



The transport approached the carrier where a young girl in a yellow sun dress was waiting for them hands on her hips red hair flowing behind her in the breeze coming over the flight deck, she glared menacingly at the chopper as it touched down and its occupants started to disembark. Her posture radiated beauty and authority.

Misato was first closely followed by Kensuke charging out onto the flight deck trying to film everything in sight and then Toji who was following Misato. Shinji and Rei followed a fair distance behind, Shinji stretching after sitting on the long flight.

Then a gust of wind blew Toji's hat off his head, he started running after it.

“Hey some one stops that hat” The jock called out 'It's my special hat'

Then a red shoe stomped down on the hat just as it was headed for the edge of the flight deck. It was the girl who was waiting for them and she didn't seem impressed.

“Thanks” Toji said but the girl just growled under her breath

“Oh hi Asuka” Misato greeted the young girl “My you've certainly grown some”

“Hi Misato. Yes and I'm not just taller, my figure has filled out too” Asuka replied

A gust of wind tore across the flight deck lifting the yellow sun dress up giving Toji and Kensuke what they thought for a split second to be a wonderful view of red panties.

“Oh. Shise.... YOU PERVERTS” Asuka yelled

This was followed by two loud cracks leaving the two boys with a large red hand print on their cheeks leaving both boys dazed.

Toji recovered his wits first “What da heck was dat for?” He asked angrily

“That's the viewing fee. Quite the bargain neicht” Asuka replied

“Actually it's a little over priced, but that's alright. Here's your change” Toji dropped his pants giving Asuka a little more than she bargained for. Another loud crack followed and Toji now had two big red hand prints on his cheeks.

Misato shook off her surprise at the little scene. “Asuka this is Toji Suzahara and Kensuke Aida.” As she began introductions.

Asuka just turned her nose up at the two boys in a show of superiority.

“Just tell me which one is the Third” Asuka sneered at Misato.

Rei and then Shinji stepped forward. “Asuka let me introduce you, this is the designated pilot of eva Unit-02 Asuka Langley Soryu” Misato introduced

Asuka looked at Misato “Who are the other pilots?” She asked trying to exert superiority over their first meeting.

“This is the designated pilot of Unit-00 and First Child Rei Ayanami and this is the designated pilot of Unit -01 Third Child Shinji Ikari” Misato replied motioning to the two children standing next to each other looking the part in their uniforms.

Shinji's red and blue eye threw Asuka for a moment

“Hmm not much to look at” Asuka replied turned on her heal and left.

“I do not like her” Rei said to Shinji in her soft voice once everyone had started heading to the bridge.

“Me either” Shinji replied quietly



After an unsuccessful attempt with the captain to sign release papers on the bridge and finding Kaji there as well Misato headed to the mess area with the children to get some lunch. Everyone sat down to eat.

“So Katsuragi do you have a boyfriend right now?” Kaji asked just as the silence was about to stretch out.

“That's no of your damn business” Misato responded angrily.

“I'm hurt. Ouch” Kaji feigned hurt and switched tactic “So I understand that you’re living with Katsuragi?”

“That's right” Shinji replied

“Tell me something is she still wiled in bed?” Kaji asked

“That's right, you'd know” Shinji replied

“WHAT!! Just what are you implying by that?” Misato demanded seeing red

“Thought so nothing has changed has it Shinji” Kaji responded.

“How do you know what my name is?” Shinji asked his voice clipped with a little anger at the attack on his guardian

“Well I ought to know you Shinji Ikari. You’re pretty famous in the defence business. The famous Third Child who piloted an Eva in his first battle with no training” Kaji responded “Too bad it's wasted staying with Katsuragi here” He smirked and couldn't help himself

Shinji got up and pulled Kaji across the table and punched him across the jaw letting his body fall to the floor. Everyone fell silent at the display of aggression from Shinji. Shinji bent down to Kaji and looked him directly in the eye.

“Don't ever speak like that about Misato ever again.” He fixed the man with an icy glare he usually reserved for his father.

“Lets go” Rei whispered to Shinji and the two left just like that.

“What a pair of freaks” Asuka commented as Misato left to go after the two pilots.



Up on a railing Kaji had recovered from his punch “So what do you think of Shinji Ikari and Rei Ayanami?” He asked Asuka.

“Oh the great First and Third Children. They are boring” Asuka replied

“I'm not so sure about that, Shinji's sync ratio is 150% and they have already killed three angels” Kaji replied getting the red heads attention.

“Mein gott” Asuka replied completely shocked by this new revelation.



Misato caught up with Rei and Shinji walking quietly through a hanger

“Can I speak to you two for a second?” Misato asked

“Sure” Rei replied noticing the uneasiness in her captains voice.

“I just want to apologise to you both about before” Misato began “It was unprofessional of me and I shouldn't have let Kaji get the better of me like that”

“What happened?” Shinji asked

“We dated in college, but then things ended between us. There is a lot of history there” Misato replied

“Ok well since he's here does this mean we have to work with him?” Shinji asked

“Not to my knowledge, I haven't been given any orders or directives” Misato replied

“Good because I don't like either of them” Shinji replied

“Well you are going to have to work with Asuka, she is the Second Child” Misato replied not liking the way this day was starting to pan out.

“I know Misato but that doesn't mean I have to like it” Shinji replied

“What were you two doing here anyway?” Misato asked changing the subject.

“Just having a look around” Rei replied in a quiet voice

“Ok. Just don't go too far” Misato replied.

“Yes ma'am” both pilots replied.



Shinji and Rei continued their exploration of the super carrier. They were far quieter than Kensuke was exploring the big ship. While catching an escalator they got their second sighting of the Second Child.

“First, Third, your coming with me” Asuka ordered

Both pilots looked at each other knowing what the other seemed to be thinking and just followed the red head to a zodiac. A short ride took them to a transport ship with a large tarpaulin covering most of the deck.

“Alright you've got us here, now what?” Shinji asked

Asuka lifted the tarp proudly.

“It's Red.... That's an interesting colour” Shinji stated

Rei said nothing as an uneasy look passed across her face that wasn't missed by Shinji. A light squeeze of her hand from Shinji put her at ease as Asuka started getting into her explanation.

“That's not all that's different about Unit-02” She began “Unit-00 and Unit-01 are the test type and prototype respectively. This is proven by the fact that Unit-01 was able to synchronise with an untrained pilot like you. However my Unit-02 is a little different, My Unit-02 is the worlds first real Evangelion. Created for actual combat conditions, it's the final production model.” She finished proudly as an underwater shock wave rocked the boat.

Shinji and Rei were unimpressed with Asuka's speech.

“I dislike the colour red” Rei murmured softly so that only Shinji could hear.

“It's stupid. Why would you want it Red it will stand out like nothing else.” Shinji began

“That's the point” Asuka interrupted “...and it's not stupid” She yelled defending her unit.

“It might as well have a massive target painted on its arse” Shinji finished

A second shock wave shook the boat harder forcing the children out onto the deck. A destroyer exploded without warning.

“Damn” Shinji muttered

“Angels” Rei finished

“A real one?” Asuka asked

“We need to contact Misato” Shinji said

Asuka lead them further into the transport ship.

“Wait here and no peaking” She ordered pointing her finger into Shinji's chest before ducking down another flight of stairs, stripping off and changing into a plug suit. Asuka emerged in a red plug suit with a 2 on the chest and back and threw a spare suit at Rei.

“Put this on” She ordered

Rei looked at her like she was crazy. Shinji understood the look but it was lost on Asuka.

“Come on I'll help you get the Eva ready” Shinji said.

Rei emerged in a red plug suit and a look of anger on her face that Shinji knew. He winked at her from his position on the Eva's shoulder. All he had on were his pants, the rest of his uniform was folded neatly in the corner. Rei dropped her uniform with Shinji's and started climbing up to the entry plug.

“What's going on?” She asked

“Don't worry there's no way I'm letting you go out there with that lunatic” Shinji whispered

“All ready Asuka hurry up” Shinji called out to the red head.

“I'm coming” She grumbled “Get out of my way” She barked seeing Shinji with Rei on Unit-02

“Ready for a lesson in piloting First Child” Asuka sneered.

“Yes” Rei replied.

“Here let me help you” Shinji held out his hand.

“I don't need your help Third” Asuka practically yelled.

Just as Asuka was about to pull herself up on Unit-02 Shinji put a leg between hers and gave her a little bump and Asuka tripped into the purple LCL being used to transport Unit-02. She came up spluttering.

“You dumpkoff I'll kill you” Asuka yelled.

“Get to the zodiac Asuka Rei and I will handle this” Shinji called out hoping into the entry plug with Rei.

“How are we going to fit?” Rei asked

“I'll take the chair. Sit on my legs and we'll pilot this crate together” Shinji replied.

Both pilots jumped in and sealed the plug, it locked into Unit-02 and began the start up sequence. It was incredibly cramped inside the plug and gave both pilots appreciation of why the plugs are single seater.

“It looks the same as ours, I don't see what's so special” Shinji commented

“I'm sorry Shinji but this is going to hurt” Rei commented.

“Change language to Japanese” Rei ordered

“Initiate emergency cold start-up. Stage Three Neural Connections” She continued.

The Eva went through a rapid start-up process connecting both pilots immediately.

“Arraagghh” Both pilots cried out in pain

But as quickly as it had come the pain was gone. “What was that?” Shinji asked

“Emergency start-up now we are free to go” Rei replied “Unit-02 move out” She continued in her quiet voice.

Unit-02 rose up from the tarp and took stock of its surroundings

“Target at 10 o'clock and closing” Rei reported

“Misato get the carrier close to us and have the power cable ready” Shinji called out over coms.

“On it” Misato replied as the super carrier started closing the distance to the transport ship. All the while Asuka looked on with pure death in her eyes.

“How do you want to get to the carrier?” Rei asked

“We can't swim but do you think we could dive for it?” Shinji asked.

“We should make it if a hand can grip the carrier flight deck” Rei replied.

“Let's go before the angel gets too close” Shinji said.

Unit-02 dove off the transport ship and sliced through the water heading straight for the closing carrier. As expected once in the water manoeuvrability was close to zero but with an outstretched hand they were able to get enough purchase to pull themselves up onto the flight deck causing minimal damage.

“Connecting external power” Rei reported in her soft voice.

Unit-02 plugged the power cable into its back and pulled a progressive knife from the shoulder pylon and readied for the incoming angel. The angel tracked straight towards Unit-02 as soon as it entered the water, closing the distance rapidly once Unit-02 got to the carrier.

The wake from the angel grew higher until it broke the surface and lunged at unit-02. The angel opened its mouth revealing a mass of jagged teeth. Unit-02 parried the lunge using the progressive knife causing the angel to beach itself on the flight deck.

“It's massive” Kensuke got out in a hush looking through his camcorder

“Watch your footing you two” Misato commented

“Yes ma'am” Came the reply from the pilots.

“Did you see the core when the angel attacked?” Shinji asked Rei

“Yes. In the back of the mouth. I would advise against a direct approach” Rei replied

“I'm not too keen on those teeth either. Why not direct from the side we have a knife” Shinji replied

“Yes” Was Rei's reply

Without wasting any time Unit-02 carefully manoeuvred around that marooned angel and gouged a big hole in its side heading straight for the core. The angel screamed out in pain as purple blood coated the flight deck.

“Just a little further” Shinji said as Unit-02 reached in almost able to grip the core.

“Push hard Shinji” Rei called out. Both pilots straining with everything they had concentrating together on reaching the core.

The angel knew the plan now and summoned the last of its strength it was able to drop a massive fin into the water and like Unit-02 earlier was able to reach its desired habitat rolling into the ocean. Unit-02 was left flat on the flight deck.

“Damn it” Shinji growled

Rei was quite but Shinji knew the slight furrowing of her brows as anger as their enemy escaped.

“Now what Misato?” Shinji asked

“The angel appears to be retreating, it headed for the sea floor and dropped of scanners” Misato replied. “Standby we'll get you out once the fleet is organised into a defensive formation, and someone get Asuka of the transport ship” Misato ordered.



“Here you go Misato” Ritsuko said dropping the print outs from the battle in her lap as the two sat down in a jeep.

“What have you got?” Misato asked

“It seems you've collected some useful data even if the angel was able to escape” Ritsuko replied

“Don't get me started on that” Misato replied

“How are the children?” Ritsuko asked

“Furious” Misato replied “Shinji is angry the angel was able to escape, there is no change in Rei but she seems just as angry as Shinji and Asuka is absolutely furious, she claims Shinji tripped her into the LCL when she was boarding Unit-02 with Rei” She finished

“What do you think about that?” Ritsuko asked

“Nothing” Misato replied

“Nothing?” Ritsuko questioned with a raised eye brow.

“Knowing what Asuka is like I'm sure there is more to it than just that, I get the feeling Shinji thinks he was protecting Rei. Either way there are no cameras or proof of anything. Asuka could simply have fallen in from a shock wave of the approaching angel, it was getting pretty rough around then” Misato replied

“Interesting. I hope this doesn't cause problems later on” Ritsuko commented

“Me too” Misato replied

“You say you think Shinji was protecting Rei?” Ritsuko questioned

“I'm not sure it's just a hunch I've noticed” Misato replied

“What do you mean?” Ritsuko asked

“I've been thinking about a lot of stuff lately about Shinji, people as strong as Shinji don't do things because they are ordered to. He is very strong willed he seems to be the sort of person who will only do things when he wants to. Like continuing to pilot eva. Why else would he jump in Unit-02 with just his dress pants on?” Misato replied

“I see what you mean. This is getting very interesting” Ritsuko replied.

“Which reminds me, how are you going with the weapons development for the Evas?” Misato asked

“Good, everything has been done accept for the sniper rifle Shinji wanted, I just need something to base it off” Ritsuko replied

The conversation finished as Nerv’s first pilot headed down the gang plank to the Jeep

“Captain, Dr. Akagi” Rei greeted them

Shinji followed shortly after Rei, fresh pants and his uniform on, still brooding over the failed mission and just nodded at everyone before jumping into the back of the jeep. Asuka came later on and stopped at the jeep.

“Where's Kaji? And there's no way I'm getting in the jeep with these two idiots” She demanded pointing a finger at her two co-pilots.

“Fine take the next one as for Kaji he ran away once the angel attacked.” Misato responded not wanting an argument now

“And where do I get a uniform from?” Asuka half asked half demanded.

“It's waiting for you at base, you'll get it upon arrival” Misato said. “Lets go” She motioned to Ritsuko and they all took off in the jeep leaving Asuka to get a ride with Makoto.



Back at headquarters everyone was working franticly. The knowledge there was an angel lurking out there somewhere sure got people concentrating. Debriefings had been completed and everyone was on task looking for the enemy.

“Increase the search area by another ten kilometres it might not be that close to the coast” Misato ordered

“Yes ma'am” came the reply from the bridge crew.

“Captain Unit-02 is in the cages and on standby” Maya reported

“Very good, what's the status of the other two Evas?” Misato asked

“Unit-01 is in the combat simulator with Shinji and Unit-00 has almost completed the armour upgrade following the battle against the fifth angel” Maya replied

“So Unit-00 isn't combat ready?” Misato asked

“Not quite. It could be used in a supporting role in an emergency but that is all” Maya replied

“I see, and don't leave Shinji in the simulator for too long........ What's he doing any way?” Misato replied

“He's been rerunning the last fight and training with the progressive knife” Maya replied

'He's trying to improve more, it's noble but I don't want him burning out' Misato thought

When there was no reply everyone continued their search for the sixth angel.

“So what do you think?” Asuka announced her presence on the bridge wearing her new uniform.

Her uniform looked the same as Rei's except for the jacket. Asuka's had red embroidery instead of blue a German flag instead of Japanese one and Unit-02's head instead of Unit-00.

“Looks great Asuka” Misato commented not really interested.

They had wanted to do a nice presentation like Shinji and Rei had but Asuka's impatience and pride caused this plan to be scrapped.

“I'm going to check on Shinji, notify me when things change here” Misato said stepping away from the bridge.

'I don't see why he is so important' Asuka thought.



“Shinji can you hear me?” Misato spoke into the microphone

“Yes ma'am” Came the reply

“I want you to hope out, you've been in there long enough” Misato half ordered half requested.

“Yes ma'am” Came the reply

The technician shutdown the simulator and Shinji got Unit-01 back to its holding cage between Unit-00 and Unit-02, and exited the entry plug.

“Come on kiddo I'll walk you to the locker rooms” Misato said to Shinji

“Alright” he replied getting out of the top half of his plug suit

“You shouldn't be so hard on yourself” Misato said

“Why not?” Shinji replied knowing exactly what his captain was talking about.

“Because everyone made it back safely and we can regroup and strike again” Misato replied

“Yes but so can the enemy” Shinji replied

“Tell me Shinji what have you been thinking since we got back?” Misato asked

“Thinking?” Shinji replied

“Yeah what's on your mind?”

“Well we lost the fight because the angel escaped. That was because of my lack of skill with the progressive knife, I was just working on that in the simulator” He replied

“Fair enough but what else is on your mind? What happened when Asuka fell in?” Misato asked

“What do you mean?” Shinji asked

“Asuka was pretty mad that you and Rei took Unit-02 out. I just want to know what happened, you won't be punished” Misato stated

“Asuka was showing us Unit-02 when the first shock wave hit. We knew it was an angel straight away. She was more worried about her image and pride than anything else. She was bragging that she was going to give Rei a lesson in piloting. I couldn't let Rei be put in a dangerous position like that”

“But you are eva pilots dangerous is part of the job” Misato interrupted

“I know that, but there is no point in increasing the danger unnecessarily” Shinji rebutted

“Fair enough. What happened next?” Misato pressed on

“It was easy, when Asuka was climbing Unit-02 I made it look like she tripped and fell into the transport LCL. I jumped in with Rei. She performed the emergency start up process and we sortied against the angel. You know the rest” Shinji finished

“Alright. I've noticed your hell bent on protecting Rei lately” Misato commented

“It just looks like it Misato” Shinji replied

“No it's not that. Look at your actions against the fifth angel, you pushed her down to protect her against the particle beam, and now with Asuka” Misato replied without teasing for once

“She's important to me, I made her a promise” Shinji replied

“Fair enough” Misato replied. “You better hit the showers” She finished

Shinji offered her a small smile and turned to the locker rooms.

He emerged some time later feeling better after a shower and his chat with Misato



Back at school the next day Shinji and Rei were trying to keep a low profile. Things had moved quickly for Kensuke, the PR department had given the green light for the interview deciding that Nerv's image would look good and nothing classified would come out of it. Also the fact that the recorded footage of Jet-Alone getting owned by Unit-01 was even better.

Kensuke had released the footage overnight and gotten millions of hits. Only his over planning had saved his website from crashing with all the traffic. The end result of this was everyone was asking about it at school. Kensuke was happy with all the attention even if some of the cute girls were making him nervous. Shinji and Rei were more than happy to let him have to spot light as well.

Shinji sat down with Toji and Kensuke as class started.

“How is everything going Mr popular?” Shinji asked Kensuke

“It's great I can't thank you guys enough for doing the interview with me” Kensuke exclaimed happily with a massive smile on his face. Shinji and Toji looking on happily for him.

“Actually I'm glad it was with you I was really nervous about doing the interview when Misato organised it” Shinji replied.

“Yeah but you knew it was me right?” Kensuke asked

“No. I had no idea” Shinji replied “I only found out it was you when you turned up. I didn't even know I was going to do it with Rei either until 5 minutes before” Shinji finished

“Well Thanks I mean it's been awesome for my site” Kensuke replied

“I'll bet but just remembered you did me a favour too” Shinji replied.

“At least we don't have to see the red demon any more” Toji added

“Yeah at least you guys don't I still have to work with her” Shinji spat

The three boys looked up just as a new student was writing her name on the black board

“Hi I'm Asuka... Asuka Langley Soryu Charmed huh?” Asuka introduced herself

“I don't believe this shit” Shinji muttered as he put his head down on the desk

Two cries of NOOOO could be heard from his right. Rei just continued to look out the window small amounts of anger in her eyes not visible to anyone, she could see Shinji's reflection in the window with his head on the desk and felt bad for him.

School continued mostly as normal, the only exception was Asuka's amazing popularity all the girls wanted to be her friend, all the boys wanted to be her lover with the exception of Shinji Toji and Kensuke the three boys could not believe the stupidity of their class mates. Even Hikari was hanging out with the red headed devil.

'I wonder if she would be such good friends with her if she knew what she was like' Toji thought

“What's up Toji? You look worried” Shinji asked his friend breaking him out of his thoughts.

“Nothing I just can't believe Class rep ditched us for the devil” Toji replied

“It's not like she knows what she is like” Kensuke replied

The three boys continued eating lunch on the roof with Rei

“You ok Rei?” Shinji asked his co-pilot in a quiet voice

“Yes” She replied as Shinji looked on. Rei knew she needed to say more and Shinji continued looking at her. “I just miss having another girl here to chat with” She finished

“Thought so” Shinji replied with a small smile.

“Why are you smiling?” Rei asked “Smiles are for happy occasions are they not?” She finished with her soft voice

“They are but I'm smiling because I'm seeing you grow so much since I've come here” Shinji replied “..... The Rei Ayanami I first met that night at the cages never would have said anything like that. That fact makes me happy” Shinji explained

“I see” Rei replied, she knew she had a lot to learn but was happy that things were changing, even if there is a long way to go.

The four students ate in a comfortable silence that was broken by the ringing of two cell phones. Shinji and Rei both picking up and getting Aboa on a conference call.

“Alright we are on our way” Rei replied

“Got to go” Shinji said to his friends.

The two pilots made a dash to the front of the school to a waiting black sedan leaving their lunch behind.

“You think that angel has returned?” Kensuke asked

“I'd say so” Toji replied eyeing the lunch on the ground

“Go ahead and eat it I doubt they will be back for it” Kensuke replied reading his friends mind.

Toji didn't say anything he just started tucking into his now adequately sized lunch.

“How do you think they are going to fight it?” Kensuke asked

“I don't know. What do you mean?” Toji replied

“Well you saw that thing it lives in the water and the eva isn't exactly at home in a pool” The young otaku replied.

“I'm sure Misato will come up with something. But maybe it's a false alarm, the sirens haven't gone off yet” Toji said pointing out the obvious.

Just then alarm sirens began blearing out all over the fortress city

“You had to say it didn't you” Kensuke replied “Come on grab your lunch and lets get out of here” He finished as the two boys headed back to class and then a shelter

Shinji and Rei made it to the car in quick time and jumped in

“Where is Pilot Soryu?” Rei asked noticing their missing co-pilot

“She is on her way” A section 2 agent replied

After waiting a whole minute another car pulled up behind them.

“We are moving out Pilot Soryu can take the second car” Section 2 informed the pilots

Shinji and Rei just nodded as the car sped off towards headquarters.



“Shinji and Rei are on route. Asuka hasn't made it too the second car yet” Aboa reported

“You're kidding me!! What's taking so long?” Misato demanded

“Unknown. Shinji and Rei had to leave without Asuka she answered her cell but hasn't gotten to the car yet” Aboa replied

“Let me know as soon as she is moving” Misato ordered.

“Yes ma'am” Aboa replied.

Shinji and Rei made it to the geo-front in record time

“Go get em you kids” The driver said after bringing the car to a screeching halt.

Shinji recognised the voice “Agent Sato?” He asked getting out of the car

“I've always got your back” The agent replied “Now get going”

Shinji nodded and turned and ran to the locker rooms with Rei.

“Shinji and Rei are at the cages. Asuka has just left the school” Aboa reported

“Good open coms once both evas have synced” Misato ordered

After a pause two com windows opened up with feeds from Unit-00 and Unit-01, both pilots a picture of concentration ready to go.

“Alright listen up the sixth angel has returned sensors have picked it up just off the east coast a little north of the docks where Unit-02 was delivered. The plan is to station you both near the bay where the waters are shallower. Lure it as far into the bay as possible where you will have an advantage, don't get caught in open waters against this angel it will be too strong. Understand?” Misato laid out the mission

“Yes ma'am” Both pilots replied

“Launch Units-00 and -01” Misato ordered.

Both Evas rocketing up the launch platform at the same time. Shinji glanced across to the com window showing Rei's image her face looked the same but he could tell she wasn't enjoying the ride as much as he was. Both Evas hit the surface a thundering crack echoed throughout the evacuated city

“How was that?” Shinji asked

“It was ok...... I prefer other methods of reaching the surface though” Rei replied

Shinji smiled at the com window and Rei returned it “Ready?” He asked

“Yes” came the soft reply

“Lets go. Units-00 and -01 moving to the bay” Shinji reported

“Good, there will be umbilical cables and three weapon cashes when you get there” Misato replied

Unit-00 and -01 arrived and connected their external power and started sorting through the weapons at their disposal. With pistols and clips on them Shinji slung a pallet rifle across his back and grabbed a spear. Rei went to pick up a spear as well.

“Remember Rei your Unit still hasn't had the armour upgrade completed you need to avoid hand to hand combat where possible, support Shinji on this one” Misato reminded the blue haired pilot

“Yes ma'am” Rei replied with a small frown on her face

“It will be ok Rei” Shinji replied trying to ease her concerns

Unit-00 then responded by picking up a Gatling gun and a positron cannon before turning to Unit-01 a smile on its pilots face

“Ready” Rei said her smile getting just a slight bit bigger

“Big gun lots of holes” Shinji commented

Unit-01 headed to the waters edge on guard waiting for the angel, Unit-00 took a flanking position high and on the right side of the bay.

“Where is Unit-02?” Shinji asked'

“Asuka is still on her way she is 5 minutes from base” Aboa reported

“You two will have to manage until then” Misato ordered

Neither pilot said anything but it just added to their dislike of their red head co-pilot

“Sensors have the angel at the bay entrance you should have visual shortly” Maya reported

“Get ready you two” Misato ordered

Both pilots continued looking for the angel “I see it a dark shadow is approaching Unit-01 fast” Rei replied

“Take your shot Rei” Misato ordered

Unit-00 pulled the trigger on the Gatling gun as bullets streaked towards the angel. The angel broke the surface and Rei continued to hammer the angel the rounds cutting massive chunks into the angel’s body but did not slow its progress towards Unit-01. The angel made a final lunge at Unit-01 and opened its mouth revealing all those jagged teeth and its core. Shinji blocked the attack using the spear. The force of the collision causing Unit-01's feet to sink a little further into the waters edge.

The angel hit the shore thrashing wildly around needing just a little bit more water under it to swim.

“Now Shinji attack” Misato ordered

Before he could begin the angel flattened its body out and turned for deeper water its massive tail fin coming out of the water in the turn and hitting Unit-01 knocking him into the sand. Rei tracked the angel as it headed to the centre of the bay running her gun dry in the process she dropped it in the dirt and pulled the positron canon and took aim firing a round straight at the angel.

The energy ball hit the water and stopped for a moment before exploding like a depth charge. The angel’s scream of pain could easily be heard by both units.

“Well I'll be damned” Shinji said at the destruction being brought by his co-pilot “Hit it again Rei”

Unit-00 fired three quick rounds each one hitting right where the angel was and exploding with devastating effect. The angel changed tactics with this new threat and moved straight at Unit-00 closing in with incredible speed. The angel was too quick launching at Unit-00 as Shinji tried to hit it with the pallet rifle. The angel was able to snatch Unit-00 and drag it into the water.

“Rei NO!” Shinji yelled “Shit I'm going after Unit-00” Shinji called out

“Negative you need to stay out of deep waters” Misato ordered

“I can do it and still go after Rei” Shinji countered

Unit-01 raced into the bay now waist high in the water. The angel had exactly what it wanted. Fresh Eva on a two for one special.

“Rei are you ok?” Shinji asked

“I am not injured but I'm stuck” She replied. “The angel is coming straight at you watch out”

Shinji was ready for the attack as the angel launched at him like it did before mouth opening and Unit-00 falling out in the process. Shinji blocked with the spear like before and then opened his A.T Field and pushed it out towards the ocean blocking the front of the bay from the water beaching the angel.

“Rei are you ok?” Shinji asked

“Yes” Came the reply as Unit-00 ran to Unit-01 and expanded its A.T Field assisting Unit-01

“Unit-02 is on deck and launching” Huga reported

“Asuka once you hit the surface get to these coordinates and assist Shinji and Rei” Misato ordered

“Assist Shinji and Rei. You've got to be kidding me” Asuka taunted

“Those are your orders” Misato replied

“They should be assisting me” Asuka replied “I am the best pilot after all” She added

“Just get moving” Misato ordered

Unit-02 raced to the bay but was shocked at what she could see when she got there “Mein got” was all the pilot got out.

“The blue/white pattern is back again near Unit-01” Maya reported

“Collect all data now” Ritsuko ordered

“Yes ma'am” Maya replied

Unit-01 dropped the spear and pulled the pallet rifle while maintaining its A.T Filed and unloaded the full clip at the angel as it screamed in pain. With nowhere to go it dug its fins into the sand and dragged itself towards Unit-01, with one final effort it was able to launch itself at Unit-01 going for the kill as Unit-01 loaded another clip and continued to fire.

Rei was up to the task though grabbing the spear Shinji dropped picking it up and in one smooth motion threw it at the angel. Rei's shot was true as the angel lunged at Unit-01 mouth opened the spear travelled straight down its throat slicing straight through the core. The energy released by the core causing the angel to explode in a massive fire ball knocking Unit-00 and Unit-01 back a little and their A.T Fields dropped flooding the bay and putting out the fire.

“Shinji are you ok?” Rei asked

“I'm fine you?” He replied

“I am uninjured” Rei replied.

“Cool lets get back to base” Shinji replied

“Good job you two” Misato congratulated her pilots “All evas return to base on platform 5” She ordered

“GOT DAMN IT!!” Asuka could be heard over coms “That was my kill you two should have stayed out of the way” She continued yelling

“Shut-Up Asuka maybe you should have gotten here quicker” Shinji replied

“Don't you tell me to shut up THIRD” Asuka sneered

Shinji just closed the connection.

“That prick just cut me off” Asuka screamed inside the entry plug not realising the bridge could still hear her.

“That's enough Asuka return to base with Shinji and Rei

As the platform descended into the eva cages the maintenance teams gathered around to retrieve the Evas and see what damage was done. Each team easily identifiable by their uniforms. With the Evas in their cages the entry plugs began ejecting. Shinji was first out to loud cheers and yells of delight from everyone gathered.

“Ayanami the angel killer” Shinji roared with delight pointing towards Unit-00

Rei emerged to even more cheers and started blushing offering a small wave to the crowd gathering around. Shinji made his way through the crowd to Rei “Rei” he called out getting her attention

“Best damn angel killer getting around. That was amazing. How did you do it?” He said pulling his co-pilot into a friendly hug.

“It was nothing” Rei replied

“Don't play it down that was amazing no one else could have done that” Shinji replied

Raising Rei's hand into the air with his own Shinji yelled “To Ayanami the best angel killer ever” Everyone started yelling and cheering at this again.

“Stop right there Third” Asuka yelled walking up to Shinji and shoving him in the back

“What's your problem?” Shinji said turning around to face her

“Just stay out of my way next time Third. I'm the best pilot here you just remember your place” Asuka sneered

Shinji didn't retort he just turned around and took off with Rei leaving a fuming Asuka behind.

Misato debriefed the pilots which was very straight forward, and then she handed Shinji and Rei over to Ritsuko.

“Shinji we've been noticing some strange anomalies with Unit-01 over the last few battles” She began getting both pilots attention “There is a blue/white pattern coming from Unit-01. We haven't been able to define what it means but I want to know what was happening inside the entry plug during these times” She said handing Shinji a tablet with images from the battles against the fifth and sixth angels when Shinji was reloading the positron rifle and expanding his A.T Field in the bay earlier

“I was just concentrating on what I was doing” Shinji replied

“What do you mean just concentrating?” Ritsuko asked to clarify

Shinji sat quietly thinking for a moment “They were moments when the situation was dire, The fifth angel was about to destroy us and the rifle was taking too long to reload and today in the bay the angel had Rei I was just concentrating really hard on what I had to do save Rei” He replied

“Interesting these moments of duress did you feel anything different?” Ritsuko asked a theory already forming

“Well now that you mention it I did feel more connected to the eva it was like I had more energy, everything became very clear and precise” Shinji replied

“Interesting” Ritsuko replied and started typing into her keyboard bring up two graphs with two waves on each

“See here” she said turning the LCD Screen towards the two pilots “these two orange waves are your sync ratio, steady at 150 the whole time. These marks indicate when we recorded the pattern. See this blue wave that rapidly increases each time, that's your S2 activity, your increasing the energy and sharing it with your Evangelion and improving the performance of your eva under moments of extreme duress making your movements feel more precise. That explains it” Ritsuko said triumphantly.

“What does this mean?” Shinji asked

“It means you’re getting better at piloting, when you reach this state your able to do things you shouldn't be able to do like make the positron rifle recharge faster than is possible and use your A.T Field to push water back out from the bay. Your using your S2 Core to do this” Ritsuko replied “At least it explains some things I have been working on”

“Well that's good I guess” Shinji replied not entirely sure of his words.

“It is Shinji” Ritsuko confirmed “Well keep an eye on you to make sure nothing bad happens to you” She added

“Now Rei I want to know how you made that shot with the spear I've never seen anything like it” Ritsuko said changing her focus to Rei.

“I followed Shinji's advice from the simulator think outside the box and be ready for anything” Rei replied

“What do you mean?” Ritsuko asked

“When I was trapped I just knew Shinji would come for me” Rei began

“How did you know that?” Ritsuko interrupted without being rude

“Shinji made a promise he has kept since the first day we met” Rei replied

“What was that?” Ritsuko asked

Rei looked at Shinji and seeing him give her a slight nod continued

“He promised to always protect me so I knew he would come, and then when I was free and the Angel was going after Shinji I knew when it attacked the core would be exposed like every other time it tried to attack. The spear was there and it is a spear so I threw it like one” Rei finished matter of factly.

“Very straight forward then, you two can go, thank you for your help” Ritsuko finished

The two pilots nodded, smiled and left leaving Ritsuko to run more theories through her computer.



“Hey Misato do you need to debrief me?” Asuka asked after she had blown off some steam from her encounter with her two co-pilots and calmed down

“Actually yes” Misato replied not sounding happy

“This way” Misato led Asuka to the briefing room that was empty from Rei and Shinji.

Asuka dropped into her chair a slight smile across her face.

“What happened today Asuka?” Misato began

“What are you talking about Misato?” Asuka replied

Misato sighed she was worried about this, knowing what Asuka was like from her time in Germany she was afraid of this

“What took so long for you to get to headquarters today? Shinji and Rei beat you there by 25minutes and as a result you weren't able to assist in the fight”

“It's not my fault the driver took so long to get me there” Asuka snapped back the smile gone from her face.

“It's not the driver Asuka, Shinji and Rei were at headquarters before you had even made it to the car” Misato replied trying to get the temperamental red head to see reason.

“It's not my fault” Asuka defended herself

“What happened?” Misato continued

“I just......” Asuka started and changed her mind “I don't know but it's not my fault” Asuka replied

“Fine, since you can't or don't want to tell me what happened that's it for debriefing” Misato replied

“That's it?” Asuka replied

“Yes that's it, but let this be a reminder” Misato continued going into full Nerv officer mode “I'll let it slide this time but I hope you weren't delayed because you were working on your image for your debut battle”

Asuka flinched and Misato knew she was right on the money

“Dismissed. Go get cleaned up there will be a victory party in the mess area after an announcement” Misato said ending the debriefing session

Asuka just turned and left



“Attention all personnel” Came Sub-Commanders Fuyutsuki's voice over the base speakers “Victory party in the auditorium in 20 minutes all staff are expected to attend” He then signed off. The party went long into the night with everyone from Nerv in attendance from senior command minus Commander Ikari to the bridge crew all the way down to maintenance teams and janitors. The pilots were there. Asuka spent the night stalking Kaji trying to score a date with the pony tailed man. Shinji and Rei spent time together mingling with the bridge crew getting to know their support staff better.

Everyone had a great time and with each victory over the angels moral continued to improve and Nerv got that little bit more happy and positive.

Shinji and Rei were heading for a geo-front exit after the party had finished when they were stopped.

“Do you have minute pilots?” Came the Sub-Commander's voice.

“Yes Sir. Of course” Shinji replied.

“I just wanted to give you this for next week. Happy birthday. I'll be away on business all week then” Fuyutsuki replied placing a long black case on a bench for Shinji.

“And this is for you Rei. Happy birthday” He finished handing over a small box.

“Thank you” both pilots replied being taken by surprise in more ways than one. Neither expected anything for their birthdays and neither knew it was in the same week as well.

“Open them now, if you like” Fuyutsuki spoke up seeing the shocked looks lasting on their faces.

Rei opened the small box seeing two blue Tanzanite ear rings she look shocked at the kindness of the gesture.

“Thank you Sir” came the soft reply.

“That's my pleasure Rei” Fuyutsuki replied.

“They are beautiful Rei” Shinji added.

Rei went about putting them in.

“Wait Rei, you need to get your ears pierced first.” Fuyutsuki stopped her. “Might I suggest the mall tonight I'm sure you can find someone to do it for you”

“Very well Sir” Rei replied.

Shinji glanced at the long black case with a small blue ribbon on the handle wondering what is inside something that big. 'Only one way to find out' He thought undoing the bow carefully and opening the clasps at each end. Lifting the top open and peaking inside he was shocked.

“The M-200 Sir?” He asked

“That's right open it up and have a good look” The Sub-Commander encouraged

Opening the case right up revealed the M-200 in all its glory neatly packed in pieces set in the moulded case. A plastic gun licence pinned to the corner of the case with Shinji's picture on it. The case was filled 3 magazines for the rifle a long range scope, only one space was empty in the bottom right corner where a pistol would go.

Shinji looked stunned “Thank you Sir..... I don't know what to say how did you do it all?” He stammered out.

“Think nothing of it young man, I wanted to. It was all very easy for someone in my position to put together” Fuyutsuki explained “Now if you'll excuse me I have plenty to do, see you two later”

The two pilots were still stunned as the Sub-Commander left.

“So ah what now Rei?” Shinji asked

“I would like to get my ears pierced” Rei replied

“Sure I'll just go home first then you want to go to the mall?” Shinji asked

“That is agreeable” Rei replied.

Grabbing their things they headed for the surface and home. Shinji dropped Rei at her apartment and then headed home. Rei was going to meet him at his apartment and then head to the mall. Dropping the case in the corner of his sparse room Shinji opened it again and had a closer look at everything. The gun licence went into his wallet. He went over each component of the rifle; it was jet black with a faint electric blue pattern through it. To Shinji it looked perfect. Everything was there tripod long range scope silencer everything he could ever need. A closer look at the scope showed the same finish as the gun but the end caps had a smilie face at Shinji's end and an angry face at the barrel end, this brought a smile to his face. A knock on the door put an end to this. Closing the case he went to greet Rei.

“Hi Rei” Shinji said opening the door

“Ready to go?” Rei asked

“Sure am lets go” Shinji said grabbing his shoes and closing the door



Rei and Shinji made it to the mall easily. Neither was a frequent visitor who liked large crowds so it was easier not to go, but tonight was different, Rei was on a mission. Standing at the entrance taking in her surroundings what she needed to do became very clear, grabbing Shinji's hand and heading off to an ear ring shop she had seen on a map it was all so simple to her.

Shinji was taken by surprise by the suddenness and force of Rei's actions. He had never seen her like this before, though no one ever had so he just decided to go with it and keep up with his blue haired co-pilot. Arriving at the shop Rei went straight to the counter and once the clerk had finished serving her customer she stepped up.

“Hi, I would like to get my ears pierced” Rei said

“No worries” The lady behind the counter replied “What type of ear rings are you after? We have a large range if you want to have a look around” She asked

“I just want these put in” Rei said placing the small box on the counter

“My they are beautiful. That's no problem right this way” The lady replied motioning Rei towards a seat “I'm Mako and this is my assistant Kira” She added introducing herself and her assistant

Rei sat down and the two piercing guns were loaded with Rei's new ear rings. “Are you nervous dear?” Mako asked

“No I am fine” Rei replied softly

The two girls lined the guns up making sure they were level and 'click' Rei had pierced ears

“The look beautiful” Mako commented

“Thank you” Rei replied

Rei paid and the two pilots left for the food court. Sitting down to dinner Shinji realised he was starting to enjoy himself at Tokyo-3. Piloting eva hurt but it always would. At least he had people helping him and some good friends in Rei, Toji and Kensuke. He knew it could all change quickly like when his father abandoned him to the orphanage but if something like that happened again he would deal with it when the time came.

The two pilots finished dinner and as they were starting to look around the mall the spotted a large crowd from school.

“Don't look now but here comes Asuka and her fans” Shinji whispered to Rei motioning to the crowd.

“Lets get out of here, I do not wish to deal with her now” Rei replied coldly

“Alright” Shinji replied and the two pilots headed home.

“See you in the morning for school Rei” Shinji said as he went to head home having walked Rei home.

“Goodnight Shinji and thank you for coming tonight to the mall” Rei replied

“No worries. Goodnight” Shinji replied and headed home.

To Akuma-Heika thank you for the huge review that must have taken a while to type up. I've gone back over the first few chapters to try and clear a few things up. Misato's eye was just meant to have some glass in it and some bleeding. Enough of a problem to make Shinji drive nothing major to keep Misato out of action. I was just trying to show Shinji as level headed in a tough situation.

I just used the feedback ratio as a way of making injuries worse for Shinji when he pilots so he will get more than phantom pain.

I've redone the eye treatment and S2 Organ sections as well. As for what happens when the organ evolves part of that is the blue/white pattern that you have seen and the rest will be revealed as the story goes along don't want to give everything away now.

I used the pressurised suit half on half off like wearing a wetsuit half on with the arms tied around the waist. It might not be possible but I thought it was a good look of Shinji so I ran with it.

I did use the Rebuild Ramiel I just thought it was way cooler and well I thought some of the angels were a bit weak so I thought why not make it better? (In my opinion)

As for the locker room fight they are attacking because he is an eva pilot and he looks different. Any excuse for a school fight?
