The full moon hung low in the sky like a great eye, shining its cool light into the clearing below. Around the clearing the forest encroached on all sides. The recent rain left the air humid and warm as well as the drops that still clung to the leaves gave the clearing a multifaceted shine. The wind howled furiously whipping the tree boughs into a frenzy like some bizarre dance to the moon whose light shone indiscriminately on all. The birds of daytime of the surrounding forest grew silent as a dark sense of foreboding took place and the night owls took wing in pursuit of prey.
Dark shapes could be seen drawing together from across the clearing. Finally coming to rest a few dozen feet from each other in what would be called no-mans land. There were at least five hundred figures give or take a dozen on each side of the clearing, not large forces. Four-legged creatures resembling wolves the size of cart horses prowled restlessly on the west side of the clearing they sniffed and growled with raised hackles in preparation of an impending brawl. The wolves were wearing armor of bright silver that was custom fitted for each one leaving the paws, joints, neck and jaws free. On the east side two-legged humanoid figures wearing scarlet and black stood in closely packed formation leading with a shield wall comprised of the first one hundred soldiers with interlocked shields. These soldiers had slitted eyes like a cat’s and large flashing fangs. Over head winged figures wheeled about the sky on their respective sides diving and rising expertly in the powerful gusts of the night. Clouds began to gather on the horizon inching slowly across the stars.
After a considerable amount of time delegates from each side approached the center of the intervening space dedicated to no-man's land. From the west side a wolf padded forward flanked by two others on his right and left side and half a tail-length behind. From the East side a similar party approached. The vampires barely reached the wolve’s shoulder but showed no signs of fear or nervousness as they came face to face with their enemies, on the contrary they glared up at the wolves with pure hatred. The delegates began to talk terms and conditions of surrender, the wolves had some way to communicate to the vampires, lacking the jaws or vocal chords necessary for speech.
The soldiers from each side waited with bated breath, and it seemed as if even the wind paused in its relentless howling to see the results of the meeting. There was complete silence for at least fifteen minutes between the ranks as the delegates strove for a peaceful surrender from the other. Neither side moved as first one and then the other delegate party turned and marched away to their sides and each turned at the same time to face the other side. Having reached no surrender deal the only alternative was to meet the other in combat. The wind picked back up immediately as the wolves waited for a split second before plunging forward quickly closing the distance between them after hearing the battle cry of their leader. The shield bearers on the vampire’s side dug their shields into the ground to solidify the wall as the spear men took up point behind them. The quickest of the wolves met the shield wall and leapt at the shields and danced back to avoid the retaliiatory jabs by the spearmen. The wind howled louder than ever before as if to drown the screams of dying and wounded soldiers. The snarls and grating sounds of metal on metal quickly growing into a cacophony of noise that the wind just couldn’t drown out.
The Great birds of prey ,who much as the wolves were much larger that was in the norm, also met each other in a clash of screeches. The birds were also in armor. The armor encased the body of the birds but left the under edgee of the wings, as well as the tail-feathers and beak tip free. Eagles, falcons, hawks and owls could be counted among those present. The birds quickly found an opponent and began to circle each other as they flapped their mighty wings to rise above the other before lunging forward to lock cleaving talons and peck at each other in a death spiral.
Down below the wolves had finally breached the shield wall and were streaming in the resulting holes tearing throats and slashing chests. The vampires gave as good as they got hacking at the wolves and pushing them back while they scrambled to regroup. The wolves were using flawless teamwork focusing on specific points or targets. The vampires were using a strong defense in order to combat the wolve’s teamwork. Presently the tide of battle was turning yet again as the vampires once more closed and locked shields completely, effectively closing all holes. The battle was fast approaching a standstill as neither side could find a way to break through the other’s first lines of defense.
There was a sudden howl that came from behind the vampire’s side and before many of them could turn around several found their heads seperated from their shoulders. The vampires not a part of the shield wall shouted in alarm and looked around for the source of the howl and to find the culprit of the now dead soldiers. They didn’t have to look far before a lone wolf stalked out of the forest at a point almost directly behind where the vampires were gathered. This new arrival bore no armor, and seemed to glow in confidence as he stared undaunted at the two-hundred odd vampires that had turned at his appearance. The wolf’s tail twitched in anticipation as the first few vampires ran at him from the main group. Before they knew h he had charged forward and leapt over them in favor of the main group. He landed directly on one soldier and crushed him before he spun around in a circle leading with a paw-swipe. Those quick enough leapt back out of his reach but those less fortunate felt like they had been hit by a mac truck. The wolf let out another howl before tearing into the soldiers surrounding him in a whirl of teeth and claws.
The shield wall was still bitterly struggling with the opposing wolves when they heard the howl behind them. They’d only heard one wolf so didn’t feel any concern but that was before they heard the scalp prickling screams emanating from the dying men behind them. They wanted to turn around but didn’t dare show any lack of attention to the shield wall. Stlll the temptation to look proved to be too great in the brief respite before the wolves gathered their forces enough for another charge, risked a quick look over their shoulder. They saw a lone wolf surrounded by the quickly dwindling number of remaining vampires. Their eyes bugged out of their heads as they saw in quick qlimpses the unarmored wolf effectively rip apart a force of three hundred strong vampires. Fear envoleped them as they realized that they would be fighting a war on two fronts. Also knowing that wolve’s were not in the habit of taking prisoners, decided that it was best to go out in a blaze of glory rather than wait to be decimated. They dropped their long, heavy shields and drew their swords before charging. Some charged the wolf army while others charged the lone wolf behind them.
As the last vampire died the lone wolf sat down where he was panting with the exertion though not overly winded. His eyes gleamed with triumph as he watched the other wolves approach from across the clearing. All of them moved at once to his position, at last tally four hundred and twelve wolves were left alive. He felt no fear as he swiped a tongue around his bloody maw and tasted the coppery tang of blood. The lead wolf stalked toward the lone wolf and sniffed although the lone wolf was not displaying any signs of aggression, the lead wolf was still wary of the newcomer , especially considering the havoc he had wrought on the enemy vampires singlehandedly, the lead wolf had good reason to. The lead wolf stiffened in surprise as he recognized the scent of the wolf before him as not only belonging to his pack, but belonging to his own brother.
