And the Canary Will Sing

Eight:

A Day For Shopping

'Good. I'll be alone. Like always.'

Charlie followed the man with slight interest. What did her want with her? They entered the kitchen and Charlie found herself staring at Molly, Sirius, and a few more people. Including Tonks. She blinked.

"What's going on? Molly?" The man put a gnarled hand on her shoulder.

"I'm going to make sure you're who you really are." Charlie whirled around, panicking.

"What? WHY?" the man looked her up and down.

"You might be a spy." Charlie looked at him. She looked into his eyes and thought. She listened to every voice in her buzzing head and every one said the same thing.

Run.

"It's been nice," Charlie said, "But I must be going. Things I have to do. Evil to squash." She disappeared in a flash leaving the man in the kitchen, surrounded by people, livid.

"CURSES!"
Charlie appeared in front of the Leaky Caldron. She quickly put on a different glamour. Short blond hair and gray eyes. She sighed and walked in. It was as smoky and filled as ever. She walked up to the bar and sought Tom. He was there with the usual rag and small grin on his face.

"How may I help you lass?"

"I'm looking for a job. Do you know anyone that's hiring?" Tom looked thought full. He gazed at her and nodded.

"Mister Dumbledore is lookin' for a teacher." Charlie nodded and smiled.

"I'd like a word with him."

"I could talk to 'im for ya to set up a engagement." Charlie nodded and summoned some coins under her breath.

"You do that. And when you set up a date I'd like to rent a room." Tom nodded and hurried into the back. She waited for several minutes before Tom came.

"'E'd be willing to see you tomorrow at Noon." Charlie nodded.

"Where?"

"Here." She nodded again and handed the bar tender her money.

"Will it be enough?" Tom nodded and came from behind the bar. He gently led her to her room. She thanked him for every thing and locked her door. Biting a lip she sat in the middle of the floor. She closed her eyes and sat still for such a long time. Soon her out-stretched hands held a wand.

"Nice wand Miss Carrie." She got up and lie on her bed. "What name should I give my self? Dawn? No. Bu- No. Cecily? Oh hell yeah." She smiled and closed her eyes. Dreaming of her new job.

"Hello Mr. Dumbledore My name is Cecily..."
"... Leonard." She smiled at the old man in front of her. His eyes had clarity about them that she hadn't seen in the longest time.

"Ah. Miss Leonard. I can see you are very qualified. Welcome to the Staff of Hogwarts." She looked at him as if her was mad.

"You're serious?" Dumbledore smiled, his eyes dancing merrily as he nodded. Charlie jumped up yelling with happiness. "Thank you! Thank you sir!" She pulled the old wizard out of his chair and hugged him. She had no idea why this made her so happy. But the feeling warmed her heart and she wanted to keep it. Dumbledore patted her back with slight wonder in his eyes. He cleared his throat and Charlie looked up at him.

"Yes Miss Leonard. Shall we head to Flourish and Bolts to pick out a book for the students?" Charlie nodded and removed her arms from around him. The two walked out back and into Diagon Alley. Charlie's eyes were wide from all the memories that the bustling street brought her. They entered the small bookshop. Charlie parted from Dumbledore and headed to the right of the store. She smiled lightly at all the books. Letting her fingers trail over the covers. Myth of the Vampire Slayer. Charlie picked up the book and flipped through it. She laughed. The wizarding world thought of the Slayer as a mythical monster. She conjured up a basket and placed the book in it. She continued her search for the perfect search. Vampiric Beings... Understanding Defense For Demons... Hellmouths and Their Creatures... Charlie rubbed her temples. She wanted a book that had it all. Vampires, Demonology, Slayers, hell, even Hellmouths. She looked up and saw a black and silver book. She reached up and grabbed it. Mythology of Hell. Charlie looked at it. She slowly opened the cover and looked at the contents.

Charlie smiled and put the book in her basket. She had found it. She browsed more then found Dumbledore.

"I want these." She said, gesturing to the basket. Dumbledore nodded and took the basket. He paid for the books them led Charlie out into the busy street. He looked at the bag she held and wondered about her theme. Slayers and Their Vampires, Active Hellmouths, Advanced Demonology, The Art of Demon Slaying, Wish Demons, D'Hoffren and his Girls, Mythology of Hell, and Bed Time Stories About the Slayer. He sighed. This Dark Arts Teacher was going to get into the real Dark Arts. Dark Myths, the whole package.

"Well, Miss Leonard which one from the extraordinary mountain of books are you going to choose for the students?"

"Mythology of Hell," replied Charlie. She looked at him and smiled. "I have a thing about Dark Mythology." Dumbledore nodded and watched her as the walked Diagon Alley. Her eyes grew wide as they neared the end of this Alley. The older shops stood there. One of the lot had Familiars. She looked at Dumbledore and raised an eyebrow.

"Would you like to look around?" She nodded. And handed her bag of books to Dumbledore. She slowly entered the shop. It was pleasantly quiet. There was soft sounds. Not one was eerie or gave any threat. She walked around looking at the mice, owls, and other familiars. She saw a shimmer. Interested, Charlie walked to it. In a small gold cage stood a small girl. No... A Faerie. She had long purple hair and powder blue wings that shimmered every time she moved them. Her skin was a milky brown and her eyes were wide and a bright blue. She Faerie came up to the edge and wrapped her tiny hands around the bars.

Nyx.

"What?"

Nyx. Nay olda'ma Nyx. (Nyx. My name is Nyx)

"Oh. Hello Nyx. My name is Charlie. But you have to call me Cecily."

Mi? Gi ohna olda'ma Charlie, mi mero ohn Cecily? (Why? If your name is Charlie why call you Cecily?)

"Because..."

"Miss Leonard?" Charlie spun around and gave a startled gasp.

"Mr. Dumbledore, please!" Dumbledore chuckled lightly.

"Please, call me Albus."

"Then call me Cecily."

"If you wish Cecily. Now who is this lovely young Fay?"

"That's Nyx," said Charlie smiling lightly. Dumbledore nodded.

"Well hello Nyx. It's a pleasure to meet you."

Da phla'ma nayo C'hanah Dumbledore. (The pleasure is mine Mr. Dumbledore.)

Dumbledore blinked and looked at the Fay. "My dear. Did you understand what Miss Nyx just said?" Charlie nodded.

"She said 'The pleasure is mine Mr. Dumbledore'." Dumbledore smiled. He gently lifted the cage. And ushered Charlie to the front of the store. He paid for Nyx and the two of them started back to the pub just as the sun was setting. Dumbledore helped Charlie with her things, and said his goodbyes.

"I will send someone from the school to help you find robes and then they will escort you to the school." Charlie nodded and Dumbledore stuck out his hand. "It was nice to meet you-" Charlie wrapped her arms around the old wizard in a hug.

"It was nice to meet you too." She stepped back and showed Dumbledore out. She smiled and sat on her bed and looked at Nyx.

"I guess you don't have to call me Cecily then."

Nee. Y fro't. (No. I don't.)

Charlie laughed and put Nyx next to bed. "Good night Nyx."

Halre Charlie. (Good night Charlie.)

And Charlie slept with ease that night. Because in old wizarding Folk Lore, if you fall asleep with a Fay your dreams will remain untroubled and you will be blessed with good luck for life. And it is also said that the Fay will keep harm at bay. Goodnight.
